    mike -

While I have no way to test this - and I suspect you don't want to test this either! I am going to assume it won't go into park above a certain speed to protect the transmission.

I know, I know - never assume...but some silly people do things like dump cold coffee at low to moderate speed by cracking open the door and pouring out the cup. I gotta imagine the car won't slam into part at say 20 MPH - easy law suit if it did right?

*murphydog, that would be one "controlled test" I would not want to experiemnt with. One would think that there would be a fail-safe back-up system that would not electronically shift the car into park - perhaps at speeds higher than 5 mph as you predict (I believe you said 20mph). I was in the car this morning, but forgot to open the user manual to determine the feature's pitfalls or fail-safe back-up. It's just a matter of my remembering to do it.

If there is a fail-safe, it would be listed in the manual. I think I am going to go to mbusa.com and download a manual and see what they say. If it works, I'll repost a response. If not, I'll have to wait until I "remember" to look into the glove box.

If you still don't understand this, perhaps one of our friends who post here can explain it better.

Further your original post made it seem that the tax was based on the residence county of the buyer. This post makes it seem that it's based on where it's sold. Does the city or the county get the tax? I thought it was the county. If it's the county why does the city care where in the county someone buys a car? They still get some money from the county.

That's what I like about MA - none of this county stuff. We have them but they only have jurisdiction over courts, prisons and deeds.

If there is a fail-safe, it would be listed in the manual

I copied the info below right from the owner's manual:

The automatic transmission shifts into park position P automatically:

if you open the driver's door while the vehicle is stationary in transmission
    position D or R

if you open the door while traveling at very low speeds in transmission position
    D or R

This function depends on the date of manufacture.

It says nothing about a fail-safe system or back-up or speed limitation. I spoke with Mercedes about this, and they said that it is a safety feature for instances when, with the engine running or not, a driver should open the door and forget that the transmission is in R or D, it automatically placed the transmission into Park to keep the vehicle from driving off or rolling down a hill, etc.

I asked about situations like a carwash or valet when they drive with the door open. They said that the car will not move if the driver's door is ajar, even the slightest amount. I asked about damage or speed limitations, and they told me there were no overrides and that I must inform the valey or the car wash personnel of that function so they don't drive the car with the door open.

The problem occurs only when the door is shut, the car is placed into D or R, and then someone opens the door.

They told me that this is a new safety feature which is found only on 2013's built after August 30, 2012, which mine is one.

Interesting, to say the least. I would believe that Mercedes personnel should notify the public (the buyers) of this safety feature which, in the end, could damage a transmission, not to mention someone in the car hitting their heat on the windshield when the car abruptly stops.

If you still don't understand this, perhaps one of our friends who post here can explain it better.

The county where the buyer registers the car (only in Florida, obviously) is the county that receives the tax. The State of Florida Sales Tax is 5%. Anything over 5% goes to the county where the purchase is made - in this case 1.5%. The cities and villages receive county sales tax revenues based upon the sales in their jurisdictions.

The point I was trying to make is that if a Palm Beach County Resident purchases a car in Broward County where the total sales tax rate is 6% instead of 6.5%, Palm Beach County would not receive 6.5%, but rather 6% plus $50.00, significantly less that if the car were purchased in Palm Beach County were the full 6.5% is collected.

Thus, since so many Boca Raton Residents purchase their cars 5 or 6 miles south in Broward County because they cannot purchase a car in Boca Raton, Palm Beach County and Boca Raton are losing some sales tax dollars that they otherwise could have collect if they sold cars in Boca.

In Miami-Dade County, the sales trax is 7% (might even be 7.5% now), so if residents of Miami-Dade purchase cars in Broward, Miami-Dade does not realize the full Sales Tax benefit because of the limits, which are in dollars, not percents over the Broward tax rate.

This is very confusing to most people, not just you. When I was in the business, people asked about the tax advantages to Palm Beach residents, and I told them they pay 6% sales tax + $50.00, not the full 6.5%.

Suffice it to say that Boca Raton would realize more tax receipts if they sold new and used cars in their city. Dealerships from all over the Tri-County area have tried, unsuccessfully, to get the Boca Raton Town Council to approve car dealership sales inside it's boundaries. I guess they just don't want the hassle of dealership eyesores and/or feel they have enough money.

Boca states that a resident can buy a car in Delray Beach (a few miles northeast of Boca, or in northern Broward. That is why so many car dealerships in northern Broward are the biggest selling dealerships for their brand - thousands of people in Boca buy new cars each year, so they come to northern Broward County.

I think you used too broad of a brush when you slammed Mexico for having problems.

Yes, there are VERY dangerous places in Mexico and tourists should limit their visits to the known safe areas. I know I wouldn't leave the tourist areas or stumble into some bar down some side street.

The same can be said of U.S. towns. San Francisco, New Orleans and a lot of other major tourist towns have some nasty areas too where a person could find themselves in quick trouble.

If a person feels uncomfortable traveling to Mexico than they shouldn't go.

I have heard of people who have cancelled cruises and walked away from timeshares over this.

Would we take another cruise to Mexico? You bet! We would however, exercise a bit more caution than in the past.

Merry Christmas everyone and I'm sorry for the recent losses.

In December we lost FOUR parents of former classmates. Two go back to kindergarden. Three of these deaths were in the same week.

WOW. toyota has their camry and lexus with sudden unintentional acceleration (SUA) which they tried to explain away as floor mat and sticky accelerator pedals.

Now we have Mercedes with SUS (sudden intentional stopping). This could turn out to cause many injuries as well.

I'm getting it now. I was just confused by your original post saying that the tax was paid in the registering county but then you said it was paid in the buying county.

Suffice it to say that Boca Raton would realize more tax receipts if they sold new and used cars in their city.

Technically Boca Raton doesn't get the tax receipts directly - the county does since it is a county tax. Some of those receipts find their way to the city eventually.

Like I said, he in MA counties don't mean as much as in other parts of the country. The only thing that cities and towns can do is add to the sales meals tax a small surcharge or establish a small hotel or car rental surcharge. They can set their own real estate taxes and that is what really sets cities and towns apart from each other.
  • abacomikeabacomike Member Posts: 12,388
I'm getting it now. I was just confused by your original post saying that the tax was paid in the registering county but then you said it was paid in the buying county.

That is correct. Taxes are paid "in" the county where the car is purchased. That tax money is then sent to the "registering" county, however because the county where the car is purchases only charges a fee over and above their county tax, i.e. $80,000 car purchased in Broward County by a Palm Beach County resident who registers the car in Palm Beach County, pays $4800 Broward County Tax + $50.00 for the surtax charge for Palm Beach County reistrations. If the car were purchased in Palm Beach County, the taxes would be $5200.

When you multiplay 1/2% over the thousands and thousands of cars that are sold, not leased, the money adds up. That means that Boca Raton receives less county tax rebates from Palm Beach County. But, if the car is purchased in Delary, the full 6.5% is paid.

Anyway, Merry Christmas and enjoy your evening with the family.

Same to all. I will be thinking of all of you when I "nourish" myself on all those pirogi's and champagne and sausage, and cookies, and cake, and other goodies.

I've been trying to follow your tax post to no avail. No need to try & explain again, but up here, you pay the sales tax in the county where the vehicle is registered.

I live in Fairfield County, CT. Sales tax is 6.35% here. Whether I buy a car in the 5 boroughs of NYC (8.875% sales tax) or in neighboring Westchester County, NY (8.XXX%), or in Greenwich, CT, I pay 6.35% sales tax.

I agree, but, some incidents did happen in tourist areas, or areas most people would think are safe.

(I had to reply to be polite)

Made it to Florida in 2 days, one night in a motel. Got here and the electricity was off in the neighborhood. Finally got it going after about an hour and a half.

The 535 was a dream to drive on this trip. Total time in the car was 24 hours of driving time to cover 1500 miles. Gas was only $2.99 a gallon in Tennessee. Back home it is about $4.50 for a U.S. gallon!

Surprised at the number of people going so slow in the passing lane, oblivious to the long line of cars behind them and creating dangerous situations as people try to jockey their way around them. I saw a cop actually nab an older lady doing just that. His lights were flashing for about 1/2 a mile before she pulled over.

    Have fun tomorrow everyone.

Friend of mine lives in West Palm Beach, FL. He's at a Christmas party & gets introduced to a guy who is a GM of Brahman BMW. They start talking & my friend reveals his wife drives a 2012 BMW X5 35i w/ M Sport Pkg. The GM asks why he didn't buy from Brahman. My friend tells 3 stories of how he bought one car there, and tried to buy 2 others. It didn't work out for different reasons.

The conversation ends with the guy giving my friend his business card & telling him to stop by the dealership.

My friend does just that. The guy says to him: it's the end of the month, the end of the year, I want to make all your negative experiences positive, plus BMW has tons of holiday cash incentives. What do you want?

My friend tells him he wants a 550i ///M Sport. His wish is granted. After a test drive, my friend is presented with an offer of $1200 drive off, $799/ month for 39 months including tax (12K miles per yeAr). That's a fantastic lease deal on a $75K + car! Carbon Black/ Black. It's gorgeous!

That is incredible. Sounds like a reoccuring dream I keep having. I am at a boring cocktail party and I start talking to the owner of a Mercedes dealership.

He tells me that they have to sell one more car by the next day at noon in order to qualify for huge incentive money. There's a big snow storm so he doesn't even know if a customer will show up. He says he will sell me any new car of my choice for 75% off if I sign all the paperwork by noon the next day.

I chose an SLS AMG GT with almost every option. Not bad for $60K!

    image

The 6.2L V8 engine produces 20 more horsepower for 583 ponies, enough to shave a tenth of a second off of its 0-60 acceleration. Like the model before it, the new SLS AMG will be electronically-limited to 197 mph, a hair away from genuine supercar territory. The real beauty mark on this SLS is the same as those that came before, those beautiful gullwing doors that make this Mercedes appear to fly away into the sunset

Yes, much nicer in Florida in the winter. Temperatures expected in low 80's here in Ft. Lauderdale area. Beautifully cool evenings (60's) and delightfully temperate days (upper 70's to low 80's) with no humidity for a change.

Hey RR, if you are out there, and not too exhausted from digesting all that turkey, I have a question for you.

I am getting ready to order a Battery Tender from amazon. Model 021-0128 -
    Battery Tender 021-0128

So, my question is: Is that still the one you would recommend for me? Is there a device that will take the charge to the car via the 12 volt outlet or cigarette lighter - and would that be worth looking into?
    image

    I think this one does the same but it is a little more colorful;

I have a few months before I have to order but would like to do it soon.

"I'll bet it was the cords that got ya, huh?"

You don't know how right you are. We did the three interior trees with no mishap. The problem came with the first of the four exterior trees. Our gardener was going to help me with those. He began on one tree and I began on another. I climbed the tall ladder and began at the top. Things seemed to be going smoothly. I kept moving the ladder around the tree and getting the strings of lights evenly done. About an hour later, I had reached the bottom and was ready to plug in the first tree. I stood there for a moment staring at the cord. Something wasn't right. Then it hit me. I had started at the top with the male end of the cord. Ten strings later I was at the bottom with nothing to plug in to the socket! I had to completely start over. When will I learn not to do anything technical? I have to admit that I thought of you and imidazol when I was doing that tree the second time. :D Hope you had a really nice Christmas, along with all of the guys here.

That's one thing you don't need right now. Your immune system is weakened for obvious reasons, so I hope you have at least spoken with the doctors about this, if not made an appointment to see one of them. You must be careful that this doesn't turn into pneumonia or some other infection, fezo! Please don't take it for granted that because your daughter is on the mend that you will be, as well. Her immune system is 100%, your's is not.

I was just concerned - mainly due to your repressed immune system. My doctor said to avoid crowds and if I want to walk with my Dad, I should do it before the stores open - between 9:00 and 10:00 AM when the mall is open to walkers, but the stores are still closed.

It's tough when you have those nasty germs right there in the house, but there is nothing that can be done about that.

I had started at the top with the male end of the cord.

Richard, I would have found a brown or green extension cord and run it from the lights end at top to the stand and across to a power source. (after all the ladder moving work).

Our gardener was going to help me with those.

Don’t mean to be accusatory, but doesn't "our gardener" sound a bit elitist? I don’t know what the proper words should be but perhaps amateur landscaper might be more appropriate. The Occupy Wall Street crowd would probably be incensed by such unbecoming language. I know your words were used quite innocently but sometimes the 99-percenters interpret this language as inequitable privilege, though matter how hard one worked to reach this station in life.

Just an observation and not meant to be disparaging of your character.

    "...the 99 percenters..."

Well, Richard IS a 1 percenter so it's OK for him to talk like that. ;)

Normally, this is where I would give my opinion, but this time I will leave it for others, so they can battle over that particular issue. However, I think "Floral Engineer" would be acceptable to most people.

  • That's the beauty of a BT. It'll stop charging and even periodically cycle the battery to keep it conditioned. It's a "smart" system. I use one on my WaveRunner for winter storage for half the year.

Thanks ty, that is exactly what I needed to know.

The word "landscaping engineer" comes to mind much fast than amateur landscaper! But Richard can chose to label his bush, shrub, tree and lawn specialist anyway he wants. Freedom of speech is just about the only freedom we have left in the Bill of Rights.

    What do you think, Richard?

    1. Bust, shrub, tree and lawn specialist
    2. Landscaping engineer

Which one do you like best? Others should feel free to express their opinion regarding the above (before freedom of speech is a thing of the past).
