We drove 900 miles to Chicago to attend an outdoor college hockey game last Sunday.
I'm taking the Explorer in for service tomorrow and am going to test drive a new Fusion while I'm there.

I have to do something while I'm waiting, although I'm bringing a book.

Two years ago, I had a Fusion and my '02 Explorer.
At the time, I thought the Explorer was on its' last legs and I needed something for long trips, family vacation, taking the kid back to school, etc.
I traded the Fusion for my 11 Explorer and kept the 02 as an extra beater to use when needed.
In the mean time, the old Explorer has been fine after a few fixes.
One of my kids drove it to Georgia and back last summer and it had back to back tanks of the best fuel mileage it ever got @ around 120k.
The new Explorer is great but it just sits in the garage in the winter, unless we are going on a long trip, and I'd like to have a car to drive again.
The kids have cars to drive and we don't really go on trips together any more, although we did last weekend.
I have piece of paper in my wallet with all my numbers, in case I need to use them.

Definitely a new car story developing here. When you have a piece of paper in your wallet with all the numbers written down, it's definitely a new car story developing for tomorrow night. Give us all the details and don't leave a thing out! Promise?

Well, at least we actually did get about what they predicted for once. I got up at 6am and thought, "what snow?" until it came down 30 minutes later at 2-3 inches per hour. Like you, I have nowhere I *have* to go, and we knew about it for a week, so I was prepared and not in any danger. Just rather bored of the news stations cancelling all programming in order to give us a snowflake-by-snowflake account of the storm. It's not like the next ice age is moving in. Just stay off the roads unless you have to. End of big story.

My SO and parents (separately) were supposed to be travelling today. SO coming from a biz trip to Charlotte, and parents home from a vacation in Ixtapa. Both sets were calling and emailing me, asking about conditions and working on getting home. My advice to both sets was, "stay the heck where you are!" I mean, seriously... being inconvenienced for one day is not major, in the scheme of things. Getting back here and having to drive from the airport to home in this nastiness (which KC is not really equipped to deal with) IS a major deal.

Safety first, people.

My only regret is that there are apparently no young entrepreneurs in my neighborhood. Kids are off school today & tomorrow, and I am offering $50 cash to shovel my 3-car wide driveway. No takers yet, and a plow company will do it for $20. I'd rather give extra $ to go-getter kids. I'd even supply the shovel. Gotta wonder what's wrong with them.

*driver, since you and I have already shot our wads on new cars, we just live for others to tell their stories. We need a new car story "fix" to keep us hooked.

fezo just got one and I think the last "new" car was the almost brand new Lexus LX. Can't wait to hear the "play-by-play" from explorer tomorrow night. It'll be like a vampire quenching his thirst - I'll be able to rejuvenate my precious bodily fluids!

Don't forget, I have to like the car. Also, I need to fit in the back seat, even I wouldn't sit there very often.
If we get down to the numbers and they don't work, another dealer I have bought several cars from has the exact same one. ;)

I'd like to have a car to drive again.

Most people still seem to prefer SUVs. Why are you thinking you would like a car again?

I went from an SUV (X3) to a 328 convertible then a 535 car again. I liked the SUV at the time but I like having a car again.

The SUV seems more like a work vehicle to me. Too practical maybe. I like being lower to the ground and having better handling and steering....feels like the car is more of an "enjoyment" kind of experience.

Good luck in your quest for the right car....at the right price.

Here in Western Ohio we have the stations all excited they almost forgot to hype the tiny cuts in the sequester as being the kiss of death for our country and our future! Instead it's all about White Death, except this time we may be going to get a little _ICE_ here in Western Ohio. OMG. We'll never make it to Saturday is he tone of voice from the talking heads on radio and TV.

I didn't look on way home this afternoon but the Kroger parking lot was probably filled with folks scared to death of being iced in for a day--shelves empty of bread and milk...

It's hilarious how excited folks here get about a little snow. You folks in Florida and Arizona and NC probably don't remember it, but snow is normal. At Christmas while visiting in Canton MI (west edge of Wayne County--Detroit) they don't even plow until it hits 4 inches unless it's the normal workday (no overtime) and they didn't presalt. Then they plow one lane on the main roads after 4 inches. Here in W. Ohio, 4 inches is the end of the world!!!

You should be flattered (and it's only 7pm here)!

In addition to the forums, I'm on dealership reviews, consumer vehicle reviews, and help desk tickets related to user-generated content (<--that's the likes of you folks, btw). So, I prioritize my rounds & participation based on what most needs attention. I visit and read here every day, but if you don't "see" me, it's because I don't have time to participate, or I don't see any trouble. This, and a few other discussions, are reserved for my "aaaah" work moments, meaning I'm taking a break from other insanity to just relax here and hang out, knowing I won't likely have to put the smack-down on anyone. I actually keep up mentally on the personal goings-on here more than I do the car-related stuff (jmonroe's recent loss, Mike's fall, fezo's good news) and it's nice to see. Believe it or not, I occasionally report on you guys to our larger company audience, as an example of the camaraderie our forums engender, whether it's entirely car-specific or not. I mean, everyone came here for automotive purposes, and we all like automotive stuffs, but that mutual interest has transpired into something more here, no?

So, if you don't "see" me, that doesn't mean I don't see you. :)

I hope they didn't forget the toilet paper. I mean, white-out means "get all of the whites, right now." Bread, milk, eggs, toilet paper. The Kroger Panic Aisle is now open for business.

Last big snow, I lived in Chesterfield, MO... a suburb of St. Louis. It was uphill to get out of our subdivision, no matter which way you went. However, a good set of hiking boots and a 1/4 mile walk took you to the grocery store, a good Italian restaurant, and a sports bar. I never understood the panic. We just thought it was rather fun.

We have 6 vehicles and only 1 is a car, so I think swapping out for another car leaves plenty of SUV/CUV's.
The 1 car is a 22 year old Mustang.
As far as buying a new car goes, I usually don't grind.
I just want a deal that seems reasonable.

We got a new bank building a month ago, but I know all the girls working there as I was with them since they were just a cubby hole in a shopping mall.

I went through the drive-thru for the first time today. Kelly (40 something female) was my teller. We used to talk a lot in the little bank and she knew I liked my new Mustang.

It was a routine visit. I hand over papers, she has me sign then she gives me back the receipts. My sirius stopped working under the carport so I switched to the music on the memory stick. A nice fast song came on and got me revved. Kelly says "you look deep in thought" Little does she know, even though I'm 62, my mind works exactly like it did when I was 19. I was thinking about what it would be like to be the first one to put down rubber on the new concrete at the teller window.

She opens the drawer to give me my receipt, says have a nice weekend then surprises me with (get this) "spin the tires". It all happened in an instant. I just brake blocked it for 1 second and let loose. Putting down 8-10 feet of dual wheel rubber under her carport with the loud screeching only new tires make on dry concrete on a 50 degree day.

It felt wonderful. I've been thinking about having 420 HP and nowhere to show it off without getting pulled over, then this. It felt so good I went home and pulled into my driveway and did it again. My wife was out walking the dogs. When she came in and asked what all the squealing tires was about. I told her about the bank and she said something about boys never really growing up.

The SUV seems more like a work vehicle to me.

We've always considered our 2004 X3 to be a truck- it just happens to possess driving dynamics that are reasonably close to that of a 3 Series(prior to 2012, anyway). It's pleasant to drive, but not involving in any way.
The Wrangler, on the other hand, is fun in a bare-bones/functional sort of way. The Bilstein HDs have tamed the ride to the point that 70mph is a comfortable cruising speed(if you don't mind the wind noise). It's like my 2002 in that it makes even the most mundane errand or trip at least a little bit special.

"...the woman in front of us..."

We haven't been to a concert in years because of the increasingly obnoxious behavior of people. You don't go to a show to watch some drunk dancing on the seat in front of you blocking everything. A few years ago we went to a Phil Collins concert with my BIL and SIL. The SIL was in the restroom stall when another woman kicked open the door and demanded that she hurry up. Can you imagine what would happen if it had been a punk rock concert?

I think the increasing use of drugs and the sense of entitlement in today's world makes the concert experience not worth it any more.

"...only use premium in a DI engine..."

From what I've read DI engines can build up carbon on the intake valves especially with cheap gas but if you go out on the highway and beat on it a little you can "blow the carbon out". Otherwise you can get the valves cleaned with walnut shell blasting. From your stories I'd bet you don't keep a car long enough for build up to occur.

You could always throw a bag of walnuts in your tank.

If you decide to go the highway method you can tell the cop you are just doing "recommended maintenance". :P

I agree. Why put yourself through the torture of being with these idiots to see a concert.

Once, about 30 years ago, a friend won 4 tickets for an Air Supply concert.
It was a huge hassel getting to the stadium, parking, waiting, etc.

The guys came out, sang about 5 songs, and then one member of the group said, Our lead singer has a sore throat, we can't perform any more, we have fufilled our obligations for this contract, please come back and see us when we are back in town again.

btw....no refunds.

That, kind of turned me off the concert experience from then on.

These gas prices are enough to make you talk to yourself. :confuse:

Down the road from where I work, right at the PA Turnpike and an Interstate, they are selling regular gas, 87 octane, for $3.85 9/10. At home about 20 miles away it’s $3.79 9/10. So guess where I get my gas.

I should have known to keep my mouth shut. The gas at home is now $3.859 too.

Mike…91 octane is $3.959 and 93 octane is $4.159. It’s a damn conspiracy.

a friend won 4 tickets for an Air Supply concert.

driver.....it was AIR SUPPLY. Consider yourself lucky you only had to hear 5 songs. :P

Went to the local Auto Show last night. Man, comparing Cincinnati's Auto Show to Chicago's....same price for admission, but do I ever feel ripped off for Cincinnati's show. It pales in comparison.....in a huge way.

Anyway, was sauntering by the Mercedes booth, when up walks the guy who I always talk to when I visit the Benz dealership. He's been at the dealership for 30+ years, very successful. Great guy, but the running joke is he's never been able to sell me a car in all that time. Still, we always chat when we see each other out.

He asked how I like the BMW (I had talked to him about a C series when I was in the market for the BMW). Told him I liked it a lot. He (rightfully) said...."it's about time for you to trade, isn't it." We both chuckled as I told him he's about a year or two ahead of me.

We talk about family, and how he's in the market for a Gullwing. Finally, he says..."if I can entice you, the E350 is going to be all new for 2014. We're really aggressive in moving the 2013s. Stop by and pick one out. I'll do $4,000 under invoice on any of them.

Mike, that sounds like one of your type of deals. ;)

Glad you checked in. I wasn't worried, just wondering what you were up to. You have too much common sense to let a little snow bother you too much.

The plow finally made it to our cul de sac just now but he did a really sorry job of it. I still have a swath of 2 feet deep snow about 15 feet wide to blow/shovel before I can get to the semi-cleared area. Just him showing up though is promising. I told my wife that her new LX could easily bust through that barrier (I would love to do it) but she gave me a rather sharp rebuke. Hopefully the plow will be back later to clean up a little, although I kind of like being snowed in.

There will probably be a nice increase in the birthrate around here in about 9 months !

Believe it or not even in my wealthy neighborhood, every so often, a kid or two will show up with shovels looking for work. Even had one a few years back that showed up with a snow blower. I told ya I lived in a wealthy neighborhood. :) He was charging more than the kids with shovels. To be on topic, he probably expected me to pay for the gas. :confuse:

The Edmund's forums probably has the lowest number of Host deleted posts/threads than any other.

So many boards get hostile at the moment anyone disagrees with one another. I was recently searching for some info on car audio (looking to install a complete new setup in the 04 Merc) and stumbled across a few forums and the attitude toward one another is terrible. I could never be a member there.

I agree.

It’s bad enough that a lot of people show up, “messed up”, then they serve beer to anyone who is dumb enough to pay those crazy prices. I don’t think anyone has ever been carded at any place I’ve been to regardless of age let alone serving those who have had too much already. It’s gotten so bad that the Pirates and Steelers have “Family Sections” for people who don’t want their kids exposed to all that goes on at stadiums today. I know college is supposed to be challenging but not as tough as the definition of the word study would indicate.

Study (noun)

"The act of texting, eating, and watching TV with an open textbook nearby."

I saw this posted on a professor’s door and I thought my educator buddies, and those parents paying stiff tuition fees, would get a chuckle out of it.

I’m sure you’ll make it and as best as I know you’ll be the second regular here to do it. IIRC, ‘verdugo’ became a US citizen a few years back. However, his choice of a school of higher learning is somewhat questionable. I’m pretty sure he came from Mexico.

That was funny. And yes, you are correct about Mexico and my choice of schools. The male/female ratio was horrible. In my major it was around 9 guys per 1 girl.

See, I told you that your selection of a school was questionable. With political correctness governing almost everything that is done today in this country, that ratio must surely be outlawed by the school by now. If nothing else, our government would enforce correction of that if they knew what was/is going on. As a newer US citizen you and your fellow classmates should take advantage of our legal system and file a class action suit against CMU. Just go big so when you win, you can take the money and give it to them when they stick their hand out to the alumni for support. You’ll look like a hero. :D

I can't remember why we nixed that one either. That was long, long ago - I only have emails saved going back to 2005, and the only reference I see to the Cafe is that at that point it had been archived (for some time) and had to be deleted.

Why? It got silly beyond belief and most people quickly lost interest.

Probably. I'm sure there was a reason, but I wasn't in on the decision-making process back then. And, as usual, there were probably a few bad apples who spoiled it for all.

That was back in the strictest of days, when we didn't really allow anything non-automotive. Now we've got a whole off-topic board. Things change. We've got this now.

lol.......I knew I should have said Rolling Stone's instead of being truthful.

And, GG, I noted your I was better off because the concert was cancelled.

Remember, my wife's friend won the stupid tickets. I am sure the ladies would have loved the concert if it actually happened.

I checked wikipedia and believe it or not Air Supply (I cringe at the thought) had 17 albums and all of these forgetable singles;

"Lost in Love" (1980)
"All Out of Love" (1980)
"Every Woman in the World" (1981)
"The One That You Love" (1981)
"Here I Am" (1981)
"Sweet Dreams" (1982)
"Even the Nights Are Better" (1982)
"Young Love" (1982)
"Two Less Lonely People in the World" (1983)
"Making Love Out of Nothing at All" (1983)
"Just as I Am" (1985)
"The Power of Love (You Are My Lady)" (1985)
"Without You"

Unbelievable!
