If I lived in New York, Chicago or Los Angeles, I would attend 8-10 home games per year, at the minimum. But all we have is the Marlins - not worth the time, effort of money to see them play. The Dolphins are not a bad team and have promise over the next few seasons. Their stadium is right on the border of South Broward and Northern Dade Counties - about a 20 minute drive from me. I try to get to 2 or 3 games a season.

The internet is a great and wonderful thing but it's no replacement for living.
A salesman by the door asked me if he could help, but I said I was just looking.
No Fusions in the show room, so I asked him about that.
He said I'll bring one around for you. Do you have any preferences?
I told him titanium model.
He brought up some on his computer and asked if I had any color preference, and I said No, although I was hoping to drive a blue one I saw on their online inventory.
The thing is, you never know if it is current or not.
He brought around a dark red AWD, so we took it out for a ride.
It was about what I expected, but when we got back I told him I wanted a sunroof and not AWD.
He spent more time than I expected reviewing his computer, then said there was a blue one that 'just came in'.
I said it sounds like it was what I was looking for and I could come back with my 11 Explorer
tomorrow around the same time to drive it.
He said I'll have it out front for you and we'll see if we can get something done.
We are definitely dancing around each other.
We will see how it goes tomorrow.
I also told my wife I was looking at a new car.
She had no problem with it, nothing she hasn't been though before.
When we got the 55 inch Samsung Led TV I thought the sound was OK for a TV. I have heard plenty that had worse sound. However, by no means is it good. After Thanksgiving but before Christmas I bought a Samsung Model HW-E450 sound bar at HH Gregg for $180 without tax. I haven’t seen it less than $240 since then, though. It’s around 180 watts and it has a 10 inch self powered wireless sub woofer. I think it’s pretty good but Mrs. j doesn’t like it at all. When she is upstairs in the office and I put on some DVR recorded PBS oldies from the My Music series, she complains that she hears the walls rattling. I told her that was the sub woofer in action and I was glad that she could tell when it was on. You can’t please everyone.

When I first got my main system dialed in my son rented Live Free or Die Hard on Blu-ray. After about 20 minutes my wife said that she was going to bed but for us to keep watching- since the bedroom is at the other end of the house on the second floor it wouldn't bother her. That lasted until the helicopter chase. She came down and said she was sorry but she couldn't sleep- the china in the corner cupboard was rattling... :P

I am thinking with these flat screen TVs have very small frames, so the manufacturers should build in some decent speakers facing forward, either along the bottom or the sides of the TV.
How can you have decent sound when you have tiny speakers muffled facing backwards?

The best sound I can remember was a magnavox stereo console (must have weighed 500 pounds) that we bought when we were first married in 1967. We also bought a matching magnavox 23 inch color tv at the same time. I think we finally got them paid off last year.
One reason the sound was so good is that I could probably actually hear back then.

kyfdx...funny you should mention Recker and Berger. I'm heading over their tonight. They put in my water heater and my HVAC a little while ago. Good people who do good work at a fair price.
Was going to list the BMW in the newspaper. Right as I was picking up my phone to place the ad, my doorbell rang. Neighbor said he heard of my newly crowned single status (gee...that news traveled fast, given I hadn't mentioned anything to anyone locally) and that my BMW "might" be for sale.
I told him it was, but I hadn't thought of a price, yet. Probably take it to my dealer to see what he says, first. Neighbor asked for first dibs, which I agreed to do.
What do you guys think price wise? I know we've got some propeller heads in here.

For as long as I could remember, my folks wanted me to attend college. When I got to my junior year of HS, I started looking at schools.
Took a trip from my home in SoCal to Tacoma, WA to visit the University of Puget Sound. Great trip, met some nice guys.
Unfortunately, my folks couldn't afford a private college (my other choice was the University of San Diego), so, after HS, I attended the local community college.
At the time (1982), the tuition for CC in California was $5/unit with a maximum of $50 for the semester (not counting books and fees). Attended one summer semester and one fall semester.
Then fate stepped in. Was contacted by a recruiter for a school I had not heard of - DeVry. He came to the house and talked to my and my folks about what they offered. At the time, I was interested in a Business Admin program. He told us that their Computer program had lots of business classes as part of the curriculum.
At the time, the closest school was in Phoenix - fortunately, my folks had some friends who lived there so I could find housing.
So, off to Phoenix I went. The program was pretty brutal - 19 credits each semester, 8 semesters to graduate. Actually, it wasn't "semesters", they were "trimesters" - 3 to a year (Feb-May, Jun-Sep, Oct-Jan). 4 hours a day, every weekday. Plus part time work.
Even though I ended up with a 3.32 GPA, I graduated by the skin of my teeth. I had to take the stupid COBOL lab three times before I graduated.
(and, who uses COBOL now?)
Looking back, I kinda miss the fact that I didn't have a 'traditional' college experience, with a campus, and football games and all the rest. The education - well, the business part, not the computer part - has held up well through the years.
My step-daughter, on the other hand, graduated from Colorado State University and did virtually nothing while she lived on campus except go to classes.
GG - let me also add my condolences on the end of your relationship; 13 years is a long time. As others have suggested, take time for yourself.
OH STOP your crying. How would you like to live in Pittsburgh where the Pirates have had 20 STRAIGHT seasons of below 500 baseball. That record can only be surpassed by them this year when they will probably do it again. Last year they had a real shot of ending their losing season streak and somehow some way only they could snatch defeat from the jaws of victory. So I’ve heard, that is regarded as the worst collapse of any baseball team in the history of the game. To make it even worse PNC Park is probably the nicest baseball park in the majors from everything I have heard/read. I know it’s an inanimate object but the park deserves a lot better than it has gotten.
Still want to cry?

Convection ovens don't always cost that much. Our Kenmore range was $1000 retail and is convection. It speeds the cooking process as well as provides a more even heat. We use it cooking just about everything. I would think most ranges around that $1000 price include it.

GG, if you are like me who is not doing an entire kitchen remodel you may want to consider a basic 4-burner gas stove.
I recently purchased a Frigidaire, model FFGF3023LW gas range, at a local appliance store near Boston. It is a good basic 5-cubic foot self-cleaning gas range. So far it works great, holds the set temperature and the burners are well calibrated. This model is available at Lowes and Sears as well.

Our convection oven worked good in Boise, mostly because it cut the baking time significantly. That was a nice benefit when it was 105° outside. :shades: The oven's so bad, I just about quit making bread (maybe that's why I'm down 20 pounds, lol).
Oh, no stores around here but next time I would drive a few hours in the van and pick it up myself. We were lucky in that the freight truck driver was a big burly guy and he helped me handtruck the sucker up the front steps.
Back in the 70’s I worked with 2 guys that went to DeVry at two different times. I’m pretty sure they said they took their classes in Chicago. They enrolled in an electrical/electronics course and it served them both pretty well from what I remember. I also remember them talking about a recruiter that came to their home to present the courses offered and how they were structured.
Looking back, I kinda miss the fact that I didn't have a 'traditional' college experience, with a campus, and football games and all the rest.
Don’t feel bad, I didn’t have a real college life either. I went to night school after I got out of the Navy while working too. If I had to do it again, I might have opted to go to day school and done it in 4 years vs. almost 7, but that water is way over the damn now, never could swim backwards very well.

In Florida people don't cook very often....the lifestyle lends itself to going out to restaurants alot. Gives a chance to go out with friends and not prepare big meals.
I told my wife since she hardly uses the stove I am thinking of selling it and using that space for something else...maybe a speaker system or computer centre.

Yeah, Chicago was where the "main" campus was located. All my computer work was submitted to a System/370 that was located there. Queued up and ran overnight, got the results (or lack thereof, depending on your programming skills) the next morning.
DeVry, at the time I attended, also offered an EE program. Their program was 9 trimesters long, as opposed to our 8.
If I had to do it again, I might have opted to go to day school and done it in 4 years vs. almost 7, but that water is way over the damn now, never could swim backwards very well.
I hear ya on that .. now that I think about it, I moved to Phoenix to begin school 30 years ago this month. I do have good memories of school - was exposed to PCs for the first time there, had some good teachers as well. Ex Air Force guy taught our accounting classes - he encouraged me to get my CPA and forget about all this computer stuff.

When we redid the kitchen in January 2010 we bought all new appliances. Stainless steel of course. Mrs. j does a lot of cooking and for a minute I thought she might go with a gas unit because everyone tried to tell her how well she’d like it. We had a gas oven when we moved into our second house and she couldn’t wait to get rid of it and get an electric job. The cook top was not really the problem. She didn’t like the gas oven. Gas ovens are notorious for uneven heat so most chefs like electric ovens but they like a gas cook top. She is not a chef but she knows what she wants as far as an oven is concerned. It has to be electric and it has to be self clean. I mentioned that because our house is plumbed for gas and wired for electric she might want to go with a dual fuel unit with the electric convection oven option. Which I think might be standard anyway with a duel fuel unit. Nope, she likes the smooth top of an electric range and didn’t want to have another knob to learn about how to do the convection thing so we got a straight smooth top electric range. It’s her kitchen so she makes the calls. Just like I make the decisions about the cars. If it were me, I probably would have gone with the dual fuel thingy even though it does cost more. Sometimes she does save me money. :confuse:
I just had to get in on this on topic discussion before it was dropped and I was accused of being off topic.

I've had gas stoves practically my whole life, except for a couple of apartments I had when younger. I have no issues with having a gas stove in my home, now. I already have gas heat. Of course, there's always that one time, when your house blows up (as what happened a couple of months ago in Indianapolis, except that was intentional).
Although I'm not really into the bells and whistles, aside from something that just cooks or bakes, there's a certain aesthetic I'd like to maintain. My kitchen is entierly stainless steel that but up to cabinets that are topped with granite. Going "basic" might look a little....ummmm.....out of place.
So, although I don't want to spend $1,000 for a stove, the look I'm trying to maintain might dictate that I do.
BTW...I do love to cook. Now, it's just going to be cooking for one.
Come to think of it, in a very short period of time, I'll have the entire house to myself since my son moved out and the former SO getting ready to. Should be a nice change.
jmonroe....Maybe it is the quality of the glass cooktop, but my sister has one of those electric stoves with a glass cooktop. It's as real [non-permissible content removed] to take care of and keep clean. Plus, hers scratches really easily.
Too late now but if we had some advance notice we could have had a party for that.
I don’t want to say how long it’s been for me. Hint, the electrical courses were still talking about Ohms Theory.

For some time an old wood stove was our only source of heat growing up in the swamps of eastern Arkansas. When in dim light or dark you would notice that the thing had a red glow to it.
We did just fine though. Dad worked night and day and our family eventually became wealthy after his construction company took off.

What about one of those freestanding dual-oven ranges? They're a little pricey, but they replace the bottom drawer with a small oven perfect for flat things like cookies and pizzas. Less space to heat. I imagine they heat up faster and take less energy to keep warm, but I've never owned one personally.
Back to employee reviews. Three more to do....
REA (Rural Electric Coop) came through around 1950 or so. Big change for us. Electricity meant electric pump, indoor plumbing, getting rid of the "ice box", no more big black clothes washing pot in the back yard, no more battery radio, etc. Heaven on earth !!

We bought an electric Whirlpool unit when we moved into the house in ’98. It was a white range unit with a gray speckled smooth top. Some of those speckled jobs back then were pretty bad but the Whirlpool we got was pretty good. We specifically chose that brand and model for that reason, kinda dark gray. Because it was speckled it was very easy to maintain and showed no scratches, none. Because the fad today with smooth tops is shiny black, that’s the reason why I thought Mrs. j should go with the duel fuel unit with the gas cook top. Yeah, she knows now what I meant but the potion she uses for cleaning (same as the old stuff) does a very good job but I can see some minor scratches due to the sliding of the pots. Not terrible but still visible when you look closely. I remember warning her that she should try to lift the pots vs. sliding them but that is an impossible habit to break.
Like I said, not like new but still very good and she will take the minor scratches because she likes how the oven top looks with the black granite counter top we have. Because so many people have black counter tops today I’m sure that’s why the manufactures went with the shiny black smooth top for their electric ranges. Plus, black is a base color that goes with all colors.
Like cars, black looks great when maintained and pretty bad when not. It seems to me she is always cleaning that top but I seem to always clean my cars. Must be something in the water we have. :surprise:

Just my 2 cents worth....I like the looks of a slide in stove, with a glass top.
They have kind of a built in look and the dials are up front where they should be.
May be harder to keep clean, but they have special cleaners, and at least you don't have to take out elements if stuff runs over a pot.

You are kidding, *driver, aren't you? We go out for lunch once a week and out for dinner once a week. We have 48 units in our condo building, and I don't know anyone here that eats out more than once or twice a week for dinner and rarely just for lunch.
We live here year round. If we ate out 4 or 5 times a week, we would go broke after 6 months. An average dinner at a restaurant for 2 people would cost $30.00 + a tip. For that kind of money, we could eat steak at home 7 days a week.
I do all the cooking and shopping. We spend about $100.00 a week for food, soda, snacks, etc. much too costly to eat out even 3 nights a week.

When we bought our second house in ’89 it had a slide in gas range. That’s the one Mrs. j couldn’t wait to get rid of because she didn’t like the gas oven. On average we probably eat about 4 meals a week out. It's partly to get out and partly to socialize with friends.
I think in some ways spending can depend on your priorities. Some people play golf 3X a week, and that can cost $50 or $60 each game, and sometimes couples go together. My wife and I play tennis which is much cheaper. Many people drink a bottle of wine a day $10 or a case of beer $12. A few packs of cigarettes $10.
My wife doesn't buy jewellery and she doesn't buy surplus clothes. My 220 calorie veggie burgers cost about $1 to make, with a bun vegetables and fruit an average meal may cost $3 at home. We buy a barbeque chicken once a week...cost $6 or $7, and it along with a vegetable makes 4 full meals and one lunch....about $3 a meal.
My wife makes great salmon patties, one tin of salmon and you have a dinner with vegetables for less than $3 or $4 a person. Even real salmon is only $4 or $5 for 2 fillets.
We have come to appreciate drinking good old No-Calorie water. Fresh clean taste, is good for you, costs nothing if you use the tap.
Home made popcorn for an evening snack costs less than $1 for 2, it is very satisfying and has less than 150 calories.
Geez, I am going to write a book on how to live on less than $8 a day.

But a slide in sure looks purdy. And, since you have to look at it for about 15 years I think it is worth the extra cost. Using driver dollar cost averaging it may cost $50 a year to have a really nice slide in stove.
Won't make food taste better, but will sure make your kitchen look good.
