"....full coverage was only about $360/ yr...."

My cars with full coverage are about $550/ yr. While my liability only vehicles are under $300. The van probably has a $0 value so no point there. The Lincoln books for under $3k maybe less because the insurance co. cares nothing for prior condition. They'd probably use Edmunds figures which run low for older cars.

My rule of thumb is that if repairing out of pocket or junking it would ruin you, then go for collision. Otherwise it's like the warranty on a TV....not worth it.

"rule of thumb" for what a car is worth?

No. The rule of thumb is how much you're willing to pay vs how much you're willing to risk. I want zero risk so I pay $350/yr for wifeys GMC Yukon Denali, $562/yr for my Mustang and $396/yr for the Chevy 4X4 Silverado. Source: I just got my renewal summary breakdown for the $1308.00 yearly insurance costs.

My Mustang is pretty old, but classic car insurance usually restricts what driving you can do, so I'm willing to trade agreed value for ACV in order to drive it where and when I want, which is usually only a few months a year.
My Explorer is 11 years old, but most of the mileage is put on in November through February, so I can keep the winter wear and tear off my Fusion.
I have full coverage on that, as I want to keep it through another 3 winters, and it can't get replaced for less that what I'm paying incrementally for full coverage.

see if you can find out what they will pay you for it if totaled. Then decide if you can afford to eat that, and how long it will take you to pay for it out of the savings.

I think once it is worth less than say 3K it may not pay.

I never got it on the TL, but that is also driven by a youthful male, so the savings are quite a bit. The insurance lady was shocked, but didn't ever say what book was. So I probably saved more in the last 5 years than what they would give me for it now. I bet, I won!

Volvo is worth enough that I keep full coverage.

I've never known a company that went out of business listening to what their customers want.

I actually saw an ad for Popcorners today at the movies - I never heard of them before. Because of your post I knew what they were talking about!

The movie was Gravity. It gets incredible reviews. Lots of excitement and technologically magnificent...but not much of a story. Just Hollywood acting and special affects.

To never buy Cascade again is soooo cold!!

Bosch recommennds Finish anyway, and I still had most of a huge box of the stuff that didn't work. Usually when i put the hex on a product they go out of business or have problems......I am going to put some pins through my old Cascade box.

Wow, I just saw that movie in 3D in an IMAX theater. Holy crap...what a movie experience. I was bobbing and weaving in my seat to avoid getting hit with space debris and one time I reached out to grab a bolt coming right at me.
First time in an IMAX and first time 3D (had to wear the glasses). Impressive!

Speaking of scams, I ran across this anti-scam website--beat the car salesman. http://beatthecarsalesman.com/

In one section it explains the sacred cow of the car biz, the dealer hold back. I have always argued that the dealer invoice was a phony number but I had no convincing evidence until now. That hold back can be as high as 3.0% of MSRP, which adds significantly to the dealer profit.

Did you see it 3-D or flat screen. My wife was going to see it and the theater only had one showing at an odd time on 2-D, but had many showings in 3-D. The manager said the schedule would flip after a week or so.

To continue the customer service discussion: He offered her a free ticket because of the inconvenience when the complained about the singular and late time of the 2-D showing that first week.

We saw it in 3D and that is the only way to see it. The special effects are the best part of the movie, and without that there isn't much worth watching, except for Sandra of course.

There is not much to the story though. On rotten tomatoes the movie gets about a 98% from reviewers to the public.

It is worth seeing for the special affects, the shots from space are magnificent, the 3D affects really make the movie life-like, and I don't know how they did all the weightless shots.

WARNING: Spoiler Alert - read only if you don't care

As far as the story, think of Native Americans (careful) shooting bows and arrows at the cowboys, only replace bows and arrows with space junk, and cowboys with astronauts.

Sorry to hear about your pretty Lincoln getting hit. I felt the same way when the convertible got banged in the parking lot by a grocery cart. The cart did as much damage as a car would have done. It cost me $900 to repair and paint. My former student did an excellent job. Still, you never feel quite the same. Considering all the things that happened to my wife in that convertible, the poor car has done well and still looks like new.

You got a good deal on the Lincoln and I know that you'll still enjoy it.

    "I got a stinkin' 35 bucks back."

I know exactly what you mean. I was going to drop full coverage on our two cars until I found out that the savings was practically nothing. I kept the full coverage. The way that my wife drives, I may be glad that I did. (Grin goes here.)

Was wondering about the movie GRAVITY. I know RoadBurner has a nice home theater set up. I can't remember the last movie I saw given I have a pretty nice set up, too.

I have a 3D display. 3D is hit or miss on my screen. I think AVATAR was sort of the best I've seen. But, the 3D effect actually added to the enjoyment of the movie The rest I've watched....well....it's usually not very well done.

I'll wait until the 3D blu ray is released and watch it in 3D at home, without the sticky floors, and with a clean, private bathroom at my disposal.

Not related to space movies, but the best movie that I've seen lately is ARGO. I saw it at the movies and twice on HBO. No special effects, but a really interesting and well done true story.

Continuing the topic of customer service: We recently ordered prime rib at Outback Steak House. It was terrible---end of the rib. I'm not a fussy eater but we both decided to complain to the manager. He immediately told us to order anything that we wanted from the menu at no charge. As we were eating the new choices, the waiter showed up at the table with a fresh homemade dessert, compliments of the management. When we got up to leave, the manager came over with an envelope. It contained a certificate for two free dinners of our choice to be used at any time. We felt that he more than made up for a bad dinner.

Aw come on GG....there is nothing like going to a real movie to see something with great special effects. Besides, it is the whole thing, of getting out of your own home and enjoying the social experience....unfortunately I had two air heads next to me who talked a lot but they were quiet once the real movie started.

Home theatres are excellent, (I don't have one), but every once in awhile it is nice to actually go to a movie...just to get out. I find most "Murder She Wrotes" are more enjoyable than most movies. 1) Only takes 45 minutes without commercials, 2) the stories are easy to follow, 3) there is always a clever ending (though I think Jessica commits the murders because they happen wherever she goes), 4) sometimes you may recognize one of the guest stars, 5) Jessica travels to different places in the world - she sure has a lot of cousins, nieces and nephews, 6) fun to watch Jessica try to fight off all the guys who want to hit on her.

Not related to space movies, but the best movie that I've seen lately is ARGO.

If you liked ARGO you probably won't like Gravity. Argo is a true story that you couldn't make up - it is more exciting than a fictional story-because it really happened.

I find Argo a much better movie, because it is based on true facts, features real people in a real life situation, and it has amazing dialogue.

When a story takes place in space you can make it all up as you go along, and almost anything can happen. The movie relies more on special affects than it does on clever dialogue and a good story. However, talking about good movies and cars I think RUSH might be a good movie to see. It's the true story about 2 racing car drivers and their very opposite personalities....all based on a true story.

btw...the Canadians played a huge role in freeing the hostages in Iran, that was downplayed in the movie but an aknowledgement was added.

That was the best part, "immediately." We've had the same kinds of problems about food items my wife gets. Often the item should not have been delivered by the runner or the server because of appearance or quality. Ideally talking to some servers invokes immediate intervention by the manager so it can be handled like your case. Sometimes there's a long odd look as we explain what we don't want and do want.

The most I need is for replacement with anything else or recooking of that item to be done graciously, whether the server thinks we're right or wrong. The deserts and extra gift cards aren't needed, but are appreciated.

For us, the deserts would have to be no/low calorie. IIRC, Outback's deserts are a day's worth calorie count or more, and very, very good.

Argo is not so true, as it pretends to be. Last scene - never happened. Historical background for the revolution in the introduction - overly simplified to level of a comic book. Hyperbole on one hand and significantly underplayed role of Canadian Ambassador on the other.

That's really what Argo is - well made and very entertaining comic book on the screen - which would not be wrong on its own, if it didn't pretend to be a serious drama about the region's problem. I saw it and enjoyed, but I would not base my knowledge of the region's problems on that movie. It would be like using "Pearl Harbor" for what happened on December 7, 1941 and after, even if Ben Afflec would like us to believe it.

I have heard a few people who were disappointed with their steaks at Outback. I give them credit for not only replacing your dinner, but offering you complimentary ones.

Question. When you go back and have a free meal will you leave a tip and how much?

Good thoughtful comments Dino....probably a lot more insight than most people born in the USA would have.

But remember, this is a movie, BASED on true facts. Movies "based" on factsare never completely true, that's why they use the disclaimer "based".

Most people who watch that movie will learn a lot more than they ever knew before, and enough of it is true that they will have at least learned something from the movie - and it is a fascinating story, better than fiction because it really happened, if not exactly as told somewhat as told.

I don't have a 3D display(and I probably won't replace my Elite Kuro until 4K displays becomes relatively affordable) but my son and I usually wait as well. That said, we did go see Iron Man 3 and Star Trek Into Darkness in 3D IMAX at their late night sneak previews. And my wife and I went to see Skyfall on a date night. The local IMAX screens are the only ones that have an audio system I find listenable; my 5.1 "cheap and dirty" basement system sounds better than the regular theaters by a considerable margin.

My favorite film of the year so far has been Star Trek Into Darkness- but I haven't seen Rush yet. Still, I told my wife about how Howard Hughes watched Ice Station Zebra almost continuously in his later years- and I told her if I become senile to just set me in front of the TV and run STID on repeat- maybe throwing in Grand Prix, Le Mans, and Vanishing Point every now and then...

I'll get over it. I sure won't spend $900 fixing a winter beater. The damage is minor, I was just insensed that someone seems to have clipped it and then slammed their door into it several times as well. You wonder what else such an unstable person is capable of.

I already am. This is a suprisingly fast car. It rides so smooth on the air shocks that you don't notice how quick it is until you're well into the ticket zone. Handling for such a boat is also impressive. For 19yo technology I'm impressed.

The Mark VIII was/is a fine car. I've come close to buying one a couple times. I think it's rated at 280 HP, which for the early 90s was potent.

    Stick,
Good idea, I'm going to check out the value. I think that for at least another year or two it's worth it.

    RB and GG,
I agree that my home theater is much more satisfying to watch a movie in as well. More comfortable and cleaner sound. The last movie I saw had random popping in the soundtrack and it drove me nuts. So you guys also have a second system cobbled together from older gear? I thought I was the only one....

My issue with statements like that is how much of the movie is actually factual? When you think about it almost all movies that are not pure fantasy have some basis of fact in them. Look at the TV show "Hogans Heros" It is factual in the fact that we were at war with Germany, that they held Allied prisoners and that those prisoners dug tunnels to outside the camps. Yet the show is totally made up.

For me, the movie (Argo) was spoiled by the last few minutes. I think it would have been much better if they had left off the Hollywood histrionics, the last minute cliff-hanger, Perils of Pauline finale. It was a good movie, but could easily have been better.

I went to see Gravity last night, in Imax 3d of course. The scenery / cinematography were awesome, as expected. But the movie is really carried by the actors. Recommended.

"If you read the book Argo you'll find that most of the movie is pretty accurate. "

Actually it is not. Read the Wikipedia page for it. I looked it up as soon as we left the theater because I wanted to see how closely to reality it was. I was disappointed to find out that it was loosely based on real events.

The problem for me is not that it was "based on real events." It's that, until people started pointing out how different from reality it was, the movie was being portrayed as being VERY factual, when in reality, like many have said here, it was just a HOllywoodization of reality.

    To make this brief I will do point form;

*Lady is behind a truck at a stoplight. Light turns green, first truck goes-then stops. Car behind hits back of truck.

*Insurance company said the Dodge Dakota that was hit had $400 worth of damage, the car that hit it $60 damage.

*But, the person in the Dakota was passing an open container of milk to a child, the milk spilled and the truck smells terrible.

*Insurance company says truck is a write-off and the driver of the car that hit it has to pay $4800, the value of the truck or her rates will go up a huge amount.

Be careful, even a small fender bender could result in a lot of damage.

Some people may argue, the owner of the Dakota should have taken more care and a)not passed an open container of milk around and b) why didn't he go in and have the seats cleaned professionally right away?

It is a "movie", not a documentary. The movie is based on an event that really happened, it is put together to make it interesting for people who want to be entertained. It also cost $millions to make and I am sure the investors and people involved want to make a profit.

If you want to watch a closer to the facts segment then try 60 Minutes, but, even that will be tainted.

Had to have been at the mall yesterday

Oldfarmer....I know it is a small possibility but you could see if the mall has a video of that part of the mall. Most malls do have security systems in place these days. I don't know if they would hand it over though, they might feel that it could hurt client relations.

We have a local mall and lots of cars there were being broken into and stolen. The police set up decoys in the parking lot. They caught a few and it did help cut down on incidents.

The police in Toronto are trying to catch people who text while they drive...difficult to do. They dress up as window cleaning bums and if they see someone texting they radio ahead and pull them over on the next block. They also are using SUVs that are higher up and looking down from streetcars to spot texting.

tjc....you're getting "pops and cracks"? How old is your pre/pro or AVR? That sounds like a firmware issue. That was a big issue about 4-5 years ago with electronics (or about the time when Blu Rays were becoming popular). The movie studios were doing some cheap mastering at the time. And, the decoders in the blu ray players and/or processors weren't able to decode correctly, causing the pops and cracks.

Last piece of gear I had that gave me such problems was made by a company called B&K. They're now out of business, though.

I've heard ONKYO gear also has a big problem with pops/cracks in their AVRs and pre/pros.

Look for something with HDMI 1.3a spec, at least (1.4 is better).

Agree about ARGO. Good movie....some of it factual, some of it playing loose with the facts for poetic license.

Watched Pacific Rim last night (found it on sale at Costco). If you've got a 7.1 home theater surround system that's capable of some good sound, that's a good one. It's a monster movie (an update to Godzilla type movies) with no redeeming value. But, it sure is a lot of fun.

For the record, I mentioned before that my former Panasonic plasma died, and after an arduous and legnthy process with the extended warranty people (Warrantech=terrible customer service), I finally replaced the old plasma with a new one. Now, current Panasonic TVs offer the best picture quality currently available, as do plasma TVs in general. So, my new TV really "pops", and I like it a lot.

I find out last week that Panasonic is leaving the plasma TV business next year. That doesn't change my mind, and Panasonic as a company is still going to be around. But, that's just bad timing.

Agreed. The actors did a great job, but, I think there are lots of actors who could of played those parts - they weren't that difficult. Think Clint Eastwood in the Clooney part and Angela Lansbury in Sandra Bullochs role.

Haven't seen Argo but right now am looking forward to Captain Phillips. All the word is an insanely intense but well done movie.

I love what happened when Tom Hanks went to go meet the real Captain Phillips in preparation for the role. Phillips told Hanks, "If you really want to look like me you have to add a few pounds and get a little better looking. He did neither." I just have instinctively liked this guy from the start.

He approves of how the movie turned out though it takes something to take 5 days of terror and pull it off in two hours.

Tonight I'm up to Sloan but this time it's for a celebration - stem cell transplant survivors and professionals. I think it's mostly a chit chat event which I'm lousy at but since te only other two I knew that went through it didn't make it it will be nice to catch some actual survivors. Heck, two years ago Gene Wilder showed up. His transplant was for lymphoma and they could use his own stem cells but what a story.

Depending on the damage and your budget, you can get the dent pulled by an autobody shop. Don't get the TV version but dealers have vendors that do excellent work. It sounds like you are pissed but resigned to live with the issue. Probably a good strategy.

"If you read the book Argo you'll find that most of the movie is pretty accurate." Actually it is not. Read the Wikipedia page for it.

Well I read the book Argo written by the Canadian ambassador that hid the Americans. While the movie was not a page by page reenactment of the book, it's pretty close on the overall story. If it were, it would've been a pretty boring movie about 12 hours long.

EDIT EDIT EDIT - I apologize. I did not read Argo and cannot comment on it's accuracy. I read Our Man in Tehran which chronicles the efforts of Ken Taylor and the Canadian embassy staff in hiding and getting the Americans out. IMHO, it details the story better but again if it were a direct reenactment, it would still be a 12 hour boring movie.

That begs the question of how accurate is the book.

So you guys also have a second system cobbled together from older gear? I thought I was the only one...

When we remodeled the kitchen and family room I upgraded to a 7.1 Denon AVR and ran all new Blue Jeans Cable speaker cables through the walls. I also upgraded all my interconnects to BJC as well. I took my old Denon 6.1 AVR, Panasonic DVD player, and cabling/interconnects and combined them with an Energy Take Classic 5.1 speaker set that I bought at Circuit City for stupid cheap($300!) when they were going out of business. I topped it off with a 42" Panasonic plasma and the result is a very nice system for gaming and watching TV.
I plan to eventually buy an OPPO BD player for my main system and move my old Samsung BD downstairs as well.

Haven't seen Argo but right now am looking forward to Captain Phillips. All the word is an insanely intense but well done movie.

Saw Captain Phillips this past weekend. Like Argo, the story was "based on true events" and the screenplay was adapted from Phillips' book on his ordeal.

My wife and I enjoyed the movie - Paul Greengrass certainly knows how to build suspense as a director. Like Argo, I know that much of the real story never made it on screen. I suspect this was done to keep the action going and not bore the audience. And, that certain liberties were taken with actual events to increase the drama.
