Flying has probably changed a lot since I quit flying in 2002.
I retired in 2003 and traded all my fly only jobs like TX, CA for all the FL jobs. It was no problem as the other guys were tired of FL. I saw this coming so I bought a 98 Corvette and drove to FL about once a month. I had it down pat. 9 hours and 15 minutes door to door. 620 miles. Driving that car sure beat flying.

PS - you can replicate the yellow thingy by highlight the text you want to be yellow, and then selecting the "paragraph" icon from the list of drop-downs at the top of the posting box, and choose "code."

    Well, that's certainly intuitive. Not.

It was 3 1/2 years old with 17k miles and cost $27k when I bought it.
I sold it 2 1/2 years later with 28k miles for $22k. Easy sale day 4 of listing.
I got around $400 in mileage for each trip so the car paid for itself.
I did set a record that I can't tell where or how fast to this day. Fassst.
The car got an amazing 28 MPG average with the LS1 engine (345 HP).
There were no repairs needed and only 3 oil changes. I'd do it again,
but I can't bend down far enough to get in/out these days. (I'm 63 now).

I'm actually starting to research what how much parts will be to get it back on the road. You guys helped me compile a list of the basics about a year ago. I'm going to most likely order the parts (plugs, gaskets, brake lines, oil, brake fluid...) from Eckler's and box them up for my Dad's birthday in March. I'll drop the box off with the car at our mechanic and have him get to work. Hopefully this spring/summer! Thanks for asking.

Beautiful. Maybe if you could get those giant tires you could still get into the Vette.

Speaking of which, I was a passenger in the backseat of a Ford F150 yesterday evening. I thought it would be a bit rough and crsamped....but, it was very nice. Seating is very high, windows are huge, the ride is firm but smooth. The seats are plain but very tasteful, lots of room. You feel pretty safe with all that metal around you. I was extremely impressed.

    WEALTH EFFECT

While we were busy talking about cars the stock market has been on fire with returns in excess of 25% for the past year. Not since the Bill Clinton years did we have such spectacular returns. With such wealth effect I expect auto sales to rise and auto manufacturers to raise prices at will.

Don't know if the sudden embarrassment of riches will last but it looks like now is a good time to buy a nicely equipped premium sedan or SUV. Interest rates are so low that financing a car today is the best example of using free money.

I fully expected the Pats to lose to Denver. They had been winning through smoke and mirrors - loss of almost the entire receiving corps, no defense. I would have been surprised if the Broncos had lost.

I usually go to the auto show but I had my son's track meet on Saturday, grocery shopping, getting a new suit, church, tiling a shower and yes - I watched the game.

If you ever do get one, the 2008 was a big HP bump. Not many options on a Vette besides the 1,2,3LT versions. HUD is nice.
The thing you would want is the electric tilt/tele wheel. There is a little square switch with 4 arrows on the left side of the steering column. If it has that, it will have all you need. Interiors haven't changed in 15 years. Still no place to put stuff for the driver.
Oh, I forgot, with posi trac they're really good in the snow. (up to 9 inches) I had a GT Mustang and the Vette back in the winter of 2002. Had to choose one to get to work. Vette was amazing on ice/snow.
I'm 6'-0" and found the seats perfect for a long drive. Once you're in you don't want to get out.

mako....I dunno. I think my days of looking at 'vettes are in the rearview. My biggest fear is having my Midwest sensibilities hog tie me. I can see me buying a 'vette and letting it languish in my garage for fear of driving it in the rain, the fog, at night, when the temps are lower than 60, or higher than 80, on the 3rd Tuesday of any motnth ending in "y", etc. Then, I'd obsess about spending all that money and not using the car enough. Then the first scratch would happen and I'd double my obsession and not park it anywhere near even a golf cart....and on and on.

Maybe, but to me, the previous version was better. First, in this new iteration it is difficult to follow a discussion. Second, posts are not numbered nor are the total posts for that thread shown. Furthermore, there is no way to create a distinct topic and if you check the notifications set up you are inundated with emails.

    BADGES, POINTS, and POSTS

When I was active in teaching and principaling/headmastering, etc., even when I was kid in school myself, I remember the use of positive reinforcement tools such as charts, silver and gold stars, shiny pins, to name a few.

Now, on Edmunds Forums, we have badges for birthdays, posts, comment quality, LOL's, etc. I mean, to get a badge for posting a picture is mind boggling. And then there's the points. Points given to posters for who knows what!

How I got badges for "awesomes", "insightfuls" I have no idea. I received a badge for 5 and then 25 awesomes and insightfuls. Is Edmunds trying to generate competition to find out who can post more, be the most insightful and be the most awesome? And then the LOL badges - does Edmunds want funny posts to dominate the forums?

I am sure there were hundreds of meetings held at Edmunds where they decided this was a great format - to reward people with badges, points, and and frequency of posts. I guess my "buys the most cars" badge is on the way!

I do not believe adults need the same incentives as children in school. To me, unless I can cash these multitudes of badges on for something worthwhile or of some value, I would be happy to give them to anyone who wants more badges on their stable!!!

My put is that this was the cheapest platform that would do most of what they wanted. Rather than hundreds of meetings involving dozens of people around a massive conference table, I picture three people in a room connected to six others via the interweb.

    Now we have this.

I would love to meet you fezo, but 460 miles is like a full day's drive for me. To understand how far Tallahassee is from me, they are in a different zone, I believe.

As for your infection and your pharmacy, amoxicillin is one of the most widely used wide spectrum antibiotics along with keflex. It should work well, but I never heard of a pharmacy running out of either of those antibiotics.

Mike, you are in the same time zone. They zipped the time zone line around Tallahassee so it would be in the same time zone as the rest of the state. Yes, if the line ran straight Tallahassee would be on central time. The same process in reverse puts Gary, Indiana in Central time so it has the same time as Chicago. The rest of Indiana is in the Eastern Time Zone - God's own time.

    Got my medication. Started it.

The other medical thing is as of Monday I have hearing aids. I suspect I'm going to change with Costco ones which seem to do more and are half the price.

I will say that if anyone has the slightest thought of getting such things, do it. They are next to invisible, pretty low maintenance and make a ton of difference in what you can hear. My lower range was fine. It was the upper frequencies and tinnitus that drove me crazy. Situation much improved.

Hey, if they help you hear, it's a lifesaver.

My Dad wears hearing aids, but refuses to wear the new ones he got from the VA because they have plastic tubes which he doesn't like - the tubes show and he is so vain, he thinks he looks "deaf" if he wears them. The old hearing aids are almost useless but they don 't have the tubes so he wears the old ones.

So he only hears one out of every two or three words I say - so all I do is repeat just about everything I say. It's enough to drive anyone insane. The new hearing aids work great - but he has no sympathy for me and the constant repetition I have to go through.

There are even times when Patricide has crossed my mind because of this. I can just imagine how the police detectives would investigate this homocide:

"...so Michael, if I understand you correctly, you murdered your father because he refused to wear his good hearing aids?"

And I would respond, "...detective, it was either him or me! Wouldn't you have done the same thing? I merely put him out of my misery!"

All kidding aside, it is not very tolerable. He doesn't even put in his hearing aids until we are ready to leave the house in the morning. It's sort of like talking to a wall.

Believe me, it is not easy taking care of him - so I just talk to him as little as I possibly can - otherwise, comitting hari kari comes to mind.

Yeah, I mean I could make out most conversation but the high frequency hearing was in bad shape. If you're a music sort of any kind this can be maddening, I also have tinnitus which, while this doesn't cure it it sure helps.

Mine sits on top of my ears with little wires that you can't see leading into the ear. I have to look carefully in the mirror to see them at all. My hair covers the actual unit.

I have until April to decide to keep them or not. Hearing aids are priced ridiculously high for what they are. They cost maybe $250 to manufacture a hearing aid that retails for $3K. Just wholesale to retail is 100%. During he test period I'm likely to try alternatives - including Costco.

my father has VA sourced hearing aids, and recently got upgraded to new ones. Fully internal I believe, and flesh colored. If I look I can tell they are there, but they certainly are not noticeable to a casual onlooker.

I think he is mostly blind to. Maybe those hand touches that Helen Keller used?

The fully internal ones are really hard to see. Mine you wouldn't notice. I did have one of those moments when the woman that did the hearing test said they come in loads of colors to match hair color and better hide the device. Now I like to think my hair is still mostly brown. She said she was ordering gray. Sigh.
