See? They should have used that! It's much easier to remember than XR4Ti!
I am sure that the ill fated Merkur program probably still has people at Ford going, "See? Americans won't buy European cars!"
Sure we will. Give us a nice one, guys. Maybe you need to ask the BMW folks for some help in marketing (not to mention building).

He didn't do too well so I might have to call him up and razz him about it.
How would you rate this car: 5 year old domestic with 25K. Paint has a high gloss and has very few or no scratches with the exception of a slight 4 inch long crease in the drivers' door. Tires have more than 50% tread but show dry rot cracking. Interior is perfect but smells of smoke. Runs perfect.
This is not a trick question. I'm just trying to define my terms.

Nowhere is it written that car dealers have to not ask for profit.
I guarantee that if you are REALLY there to buy a car,you aren't walking on the first pencil.
If you are, you're silly.
This is not a trick question. I'm just trying to define my terms.
Honestly, below average.
4" crease means the door will have to be refinished, dry rot means the tires are original and need to be replaced.
No one wants a smoker car.
They'll move East. "Introducing the new Chevy New York...It's taxing to drive!"

Not something I'd pay up for.. wholesale piece.
This was an accurate description of the car on the dealer's lot. No blown gaskets. I've been driving it for the last 76K miles. Yes I bought it. He had to drop the price about 25% to sell it to me.
I would have rated it "average" on body and "excellent" on mechanicals.

All I expect is a salesperson who knows the vehicle, acts like they actually want to sell me a car, doesn't want to play games, and has (or can get) the car I want.
However, my car buying usually takes months. Usually it goes something like this:
Go to dealership A. Get treated like crap. Say screw it and leave with a taste in my mouth bad enough that I forget about buying for a few months.
Dealerships B, C, and
Usually around E or F I find a salesman that treats me with at least a little respect, and is happy to make a quick and easy sale.
I've been insulted, ignored, made fun of, and had people try to play all kinds of games with the numbers, paperwork, trade-in, etc. Maybe it's because I'm young and pretty "blue collar". Maybe I just have bad luck. Either way, it's kind of sad.
Your going about it all wrong then if it takes you months to buy a car.
Interesting. I thought at the time that it was strange that the dealer didn't recondition it better. I mean new tires, Dent-Wizzard repair on the door, deodorizer for the interior. I might have paid more. As it was he paid me to do these things.
Oh, BTW,this was the car that I was told "You know, used Chryslers are going UP in value these days" :confuse:

I've come in interested and gotten ignored or insulted. Then when I actually am just looking I land a "what will it take to get you to buy today?" In the latter case I;ve got news - if I say I'm just looking, I'm just looking.
New tires are well it depends on the vehicle of course but for some plain jane chrysler maybe 400 bucks for a set of nice name brand tires.
Hit it with a sold detail on the interior and a ozone machine to reduce the smokers car hint maybe even eliminate it if it is not that bad 150 bucks.
A four inch crease is probably more then dent wizard depending on where it is but it is still not huge money.
You said he dropped the price 25 percent so how much was that in gross dollars?
If that car was cherry it would have brought strong money.
Here's what I would have done.. spend $300 for a set of new shoes, $200-300 to fix the dent, and park the car for 24 hours with the ionizer in it after I had the detail dept shampoo the seats and carpets, sprayed the AC vents with deodorant..bought $15 worth of new cigarette lighters..
Boom! No more stink and the car looks like a 25k mile creampuff and the dealer will now get ALL the money for it.
Instead it's edgy and they sell it for squat. Stupid...
Hahaha! I just saw your post. Well said indeed. What's weird is a car like that is usually a home run unit.
Quitter. :P

2014 Malibu 2LT, 2015 Cruze 2LT,
The hot Fiesta was the XR2, the hot Escort was the XR3..etc.
So you had the Hot Sierra as the XR4i (i for injected which was noteworthy in the early 80s) and the T for Turbocharged.
All the Merkur XR4Ti really was was a 3-Door Sierra with a Turbocharged Pinto 2.3
Doesn't sound as good when you say it that way. Thanks for the explanation.
Now I know what the Aura XR model means...

You're right! Miss America (Camry)is probably a tighter ride
But seriously folks, which SE did you drive? a four banger or V6? and was it a new as in 07 or 08? Maybe you confused it with the Corolla S.

The question for the all knowing "Mack" is this; I have a car coming in (supposedly within the next 7 days). The dealer tells me that the car has to be reported sold this month (Sept) even if I don't get it till October (next week). Says he'll have to talk to mgr about any Oct incents, but will be able to advantage any TFS financing deals. Since I won't actually be paying or taking possession till sometime 1st or 2nd week Oct, what is the situation?
I'll give you 'assistant producer' credit.......
thx,metmdx
I understand this however, in my experience every customer that ever asked for the best price didn't buy at the best price. They are the ones that started the "game playing". Things like:
Suspect: "can you do better than that?"
Me: "No, you asked for my best price."
Suspect:"I'll have to think about it."
Me: "What's there to think about? you wanted the best price, I gave it to you. Let's wrap it up."
Suspect: "I never buy on impulse."
Me: "What impulse?"
Suspect: "I want to check one more place." and the one that takes the cake...(drum roll please!)
:shades:
Sounds to me like your sales person wants the deal to count for the month of September. If the car is due in the next 7 days then they have a VIN# and can contract you. The current incentives run until Oct 1, 2007 since the end of September is on a Saturday. Some dealerships will not pay until the vehicle is contracted and some won't pay up until the car is actually delivered and over the curb.
It's up to you. Be aware that if you do contract before the car is in and you are not picking it up until a week or two later that if any damage happens to it while it's at the dealers with plates on it you will be responsible for it.
Which car is it? one with special APR or rebate?
Mack

OMG quick Joel he admits it Toyota has rebates. :P
Remember this was a 5 year old small Chrysler,so we're not talking big gross here. As I remember they asked $8995 and by the time we were done I paid about $6900.
They did de-stink the car for me as I told them they would have to answer to Mrs. Farmer if it smelled. The tires I wanted to replace myself rather than get some cheapos slapped on. The only thing that went unfixed was the dent. I guess the salesman was kinda mad at me so when it came time to closed the deal he announced: "We don't fix dents in used cars!" At that point I figured I had gotten the best deal I was going to get.
I don't know if I left money on the table but 5 years of fairly trouble free driving was worth what I paid. At the time the NADA book said that retail was $7700 and wholesale was $6700 for "good" condition.

I have to talk to my manager.
The negotiation ploy that works for the goose also works for the gander.
Its not that I'm going about it wrong, it's that
I don't walk into a dealer in dire need of a car. If I'm treated badly, the "car fever" goes away for a month or two.
When I purchased my current car, it took about an hour to actually get the deal done. Had a great salesguy that that was knowledgable and friendly. I told him what we wanted, he looked and saw they were slated to get one in a few weeks and gave me price. I said I'd put a deposit down today if he gave me a tad under the average edmunds price. We filled out paperwork. Done deal.
I got what I wanted, he got a quick and easy sale, and the dealer moved a car.
I didn't really say I would walk - but many people would. There is a large population group that simply cannot stand that stupid dance, especially if all factors are already in the picture: they are well informed and make some effort to show it - yet first pencil is basically a daylight robbery - how do you think they'd react? If beforehand you drop all the clues that you are aware of your own score (and lets say it's 750 or so), you have a good idea about the real price of the car (say, it's not a Solstice) and real value of the trade (say it's a good-looking well kept late model with low mileage) and they still pencil you MSRP (plus $699 "fee", of course), 10% APR and lowball the trade by 3 grand, what do you do? They did not crate "room for negotiation" - they made a continent-sized gap, where reasonable "middle ground" is probably one-tenth the distance from you. How do you close it in this century?
As I said before - I would give a chance to correct (everybody makes mistakes

Don't worry brother, if this cost you your job you can stay with me and my family here in Nashville and I will hook you up with a job, we will need another lot attendant when our new store opens.
Having been in the business for more than a day, if you call me with that description, I will give you ballpark numbers. If you want hard numbers over the phone, they will be significantly lower than if I see the car. Would you buy something sight unseen and pay top dollar?
I’m sure you hear that quite a bit and if a married person shows up without the boss I think you are pretty much guaranteed to hear this if the buyer thinks he can do better.
Other than talking to me here, you don’t know me but once the decision has been made to buy a car, it doesn’t take long because we are serious buyers when we shop. Mrs.jmonroe goes with me, we sign the papers and I drive that beauty home and wax it.
I see where another poster commented about going to the manager for the final OK. I know this is how it works so this doesn’t bother me other than when the salesperson comes back with a, “lets split the difference” line. To this I say, “you have gotten my first and final offer is it yea or nay”. This of course means the guy has to make one more trip back to his boss. The result is almost always, “OK but you gotta take it today”. That’s no problem. If I wanted the car tomorrow I would have shopped tomorrow.
BTW in 2005 Mrs. jmonroe forgot to sign the papers so that baby is all mine no matter what happens. So, when we bought in 2006 she wasn’t going to let that happen again so as soon as we walked into the F&I office she says, “where do I sign,” the guy was really surprised and said, “mam, please, we haven’t even gotten to that point yet, let me go over this contract with you first”. When I explained the situation he said, “OH, I got ya now”. We all had a laugh and we listened to the warranty, mop/glow, rust/dust thing then she signed. No, we didn’t buy any of that stuff but you probably knew that.
The more I think of it if something does happen I’ll at least have that 2005 purchase to drive while searching for an apartment. That is, unless she gets a reeeeeally good lawyer!
