If you are planning on removing the tail gate, and put the board across to hold everything in the bed. Maybe you should read the drag info at: http://mars.acnet.wnec.edu/~ehaffner/did.htm.
Doesn't look like a good idea, my personal opinion. But to each his own.
You have the same date I was given for production of my 3/4 ton. I was told a delivery time to dealer for the week of April 17th to 22nd. Can't wait so I can drive it to New York to Pick up my slide-on-camper, that has been shivering in the cold waiting on me.
Z71 is $365 not $100. You get a lil more than a sticker
You couldnt afford it? Hey you can do without wheel locks and stuff for a little bit. Whats $365 when ur spending $30000???
Also when was your order accepted by gm? Mine was accepted march 14th and the salesman is going to call me tomorrow (tues when they get their printout from gm about tpw's and stuff i guess) and let me know if they got a tpw yet. Thanks
Rshornsby: I ordered the factory tonneau cover and was speaking about putting that board across the back to keep stuff contained next to the tailgate like the Chevy Silverado brochure shows.
Nasviking: Thanks for the info. Middle to late April is too early for me, but I planned on it arriving late so I ordered early... That only makes sense when you consider my current lease is up June 15 and I make my last payment May 15. I am buying the truck, but the timing might cost me a few extra hundred bucks. Better to have, than to not have after reading about the wait times in here!
Ryan: I was kidding about not being able to afford the extra $100 for the Z71 package. The reason I say $100 is that is about the difference if you calculate the items I ordered included in the package seperately. I ordered the Z85 Suspension, high capacity air cleaners, and skid plates. I just did not want the taller shocks. I dont do enough off roading to realize the benefits, and If you use the logic its only another 100 bucks this truck would be costing me several thousand more! I understand the Z71 package to do a good job at handling the rough terrain with the larger sway bars and shocks, but like Ray T. said earlier GM did this for more of a marketing purpose than anything else. And you know what: IT WORKED! I am sure the truck will do a fine job on the occasions when I do take it off-road. Off-roading due to necessity not for fun. I ordered my truck on March 7th and got the order number on March 14th just like you. I called GM on March 20 and received the TPW of April 3rd.
IF ONLY GM COULD MAKE SILVERADOS LIKE THEY MARKET THEM.
They used to say that about Harley-Davidson's also, and Harley planned it that way. I worked there. Keep demand higher than production and you can ask MSRP + and never run out of customers... Until they buy a Honda, Kawasaki, ect. Same thing holds true for Trucks. Everyone says they are die hard Chevy people, but when they have to really wait and the other guys have the models you want, alot of people become Ford and Dodge fanatics. They are easily swayed because they did not grow up on a particular brand, they just have the bucks now to afford what they want and there are alot of choices!
Like one salesman told me all the Z71 package is is a status symbol really. Kinda like an american legend. Probably all hype. Theres just something about it i guess maybe its that sticker it looks better than the 4x4 sticker. I dont know all i know is that i ordered it. Oh yea on a side note at work this weekend a guy had a 95 or 96 ext cab chevy 4x4 well he bought z71 stickers and put them under the 4x4 stickers didnt even take the origional 4x4 stickers off. I was like hey u know your truck isnt realy a z71 and he tried to argue with me and i was like look u added 2 stickers doesnt mean its really one. So i guess you can go to your service dept and have the Z71 sticker put on if you want.
Oh yea thanks for the date info maybe ill find out today if i got a tpw yet. WOW maybe our trucks will be built side by side pretty cool huh. I kinda hope though its not built towards the end of the month though.
Here is a really great Truck equipment web site-WWW.Accessconnect.com I was given 4/3 for my TPW (4x4 ext cab Z-71) as well. One comment, I bought my last chev without Z71. Got the HD package-Z85, instead which came with 36mm shocks...BIG MISTAKE....Off road or not, the features of the Z-71 package are ledgendary. The 46mm shocks and stability bars are worth the additional $300, by themselves.
Did they tell you which plant it was being built at? They can, I just didn't know if they gave you that information. May make a difference on how long it takes to ship.
Mine is being built in Wentzville, MO this week - 1/2 ton, xtnd cab, Z71.
You order the optional engine, say 5.3 over the standard 4.8, WHAT do they do with the other engine? they took out of truck as standard. I think they should throw it in the bed so you can sell it on the side. LOL
I've heard this term used a couple times on this board. Is it what is sounds like, some type of film that gets applied over the factory paint for added protection. How much? Is it worth it? One last comment, the Z-85 HD suspension package does not include skid plates....Without Z71 you need to add option NZZ-Skid Plate Package, which is around $100.
The film I speak of goes on the bottom 1/3 of each side of the truck between the wheels. It is supposed to keep the paint in better shape in that area. I have seen a chrome "colored" film also, I dont know if it is in the protection category, but it does a good job.
Yeah I know the Z71 is legendary and I have been in both trucks, very little difference on the road...which is where I will be spending most of my time. The only reason I took any suspension option at all is to get the factory towing package, a requirement. I did order the skid plates seperately. The sway bars are larger in size on the z71, not missing on the standard truck. For those of you who want to further argue/justify your purchase of the Z71 package, search for the topic "shocks" and you will find some interesting comments from current Silverado owners also.
Ray:
I think I will ask the dealer about throwing that 4.8L in the back. I can hook it up to my wood spliter, dont know if it will cut wood any better, but it will blow the doors off all the other splitters, and the bark off the trees as I pass by!
Wont know till the dealership gets the VIN number. Im not going to bug gm my salesman is going to do that for me. Saves me time i guess. If mine is built in fort wayne it will only have to travel about 20 min from the plant to the dealership. Im hoping mine is built in canada so itll take a lil longer to come in (i know if you really want to know why i want to wait longer just ask me) but i kinda want it to come in end of may.
Anybody already have one. I was going to order one for $212 at J C Whitney, but for $200.00 the factory one would be installed. Is that put on at the dealership? Does it snap on at the sides or is it the new style that slips into a grove?
The only tonneau cover availble from the factory is known in retail truck stuff stores as the Fold A Cover. It is made of aluminum and stainless steel finished in black. The cover is clamped on to the bed and locks to the tailgate. You open the cover by unlocking and folding the individual panels toward the cab of the truck. You can fold one or all panels up depending on your needs. Check it out at the GM Accessories website.
I ordered it for alot of reasons, mainly because all the other non-snapping / velcro type covers were real expensive aftermarket. I did not want to spend the $700 plus for this exact cover aftermarket. The fiberglass covers are even more. There is also a rolling cover that rolls up into a box behind the cab. I cant think of the name of the company, but they have a website and if you search under rolling tonneau cover you will find it. I wanted something secure without spending alot of money, and the factory cover does all of that.
I would like to see a cover / tailgate lock that works with the keyless entry. The same company that makes the rolling cover makes a device that fits in the tailgate to do just that. Only problem is you have to buy the rolling cover for it to work.
There may be better options (fiberglass lid, rolling cover, fiberglass caps) but for the money the factory cover does a great job.
RYAN: End of may would be a good delivery date for my baby also. I ordered early and expected to get it late. Looks like two car payments in May for me!
I did not ask. Dont care really. I know it probably means something as far as timing goes.
I thought they were originally all make in the Canada. I read in here that someone ordered one and it was made in Janesville, WI I think they were confused though, as that is a Tahoe, Yukon, plant to my knowledge. Who knows, they may be making them everywhere with all this demand.
On another note, if anyone can live with the 3 doors there are a ton on the lots and the dealers cant give them away. I could have gotten a 3 door with same equipment (less the door) for approximately $24800. That is including the $1000 rebate, $500 auto show, $500 gm loyalty, discounts, and buying it at GM supplier price. That is one hell of a deal considering the truck MSRP was around $30800. I ordered the four door for $27028. SEEMS KIND OF STUPID THAT I PAID AN EXTRA TWO THOUSAND FOR A FOURTH DOOR HUH! The wife insisted as we have a four door Chevy Venture now.
Have to like it when the wife tells you to spend more money rather than less.
Ryan, I take it you dont have these types of problems.
Aren't the GMC and Chevy's built on the same lines? I figured they both came out of the same buildings. My GMC 1/2 ton, xtnd cab, Z71 is coming from Wentzville, MO.
I once had a friend that bought a GMC about 4 years ago. It had the GMC emblem on one door and Chevy on the other, thought someone forgot which brand they were building that day.
To say the least I've never heard anyone mention this Missouri plant before, but GMC has told me this 3 times now. They think I'm crazy.... and maybe I am.
The product info can be found at: www.rumseytruck.com/product/fac.htm if anyone is intrested in it. Certainly looks to have possibilities, since I haul a 5th Wheel Trailer.
JUST THOUGHT I'D let you know my story. I ordered my truck end of October 99. Was told 1st of January that interior changes were never made, would have to reorder. On 1-18-00, truck 1 was reordered which was 1500 Silverado... LS. 5.3 longbed extendedcab trailoring equiped foglights buckets, the list goes on and on. Trust built 2-21-00, received on 3-7-00. dealer made up for delays by giving me truck at cost, i can't say enough about how well michael chevrolet in fresno california treated us. anyway we love the truck, have 2000 miles on it and not a single flaw this at time, except it makes me go to sleep when I drive it. It was worth the wait, agonizing as it was. bye
Please tell me something. Those of you that are order Silverados, regardless of flavor (LB/SB, 2WD/4WD, extended cab, 3dr/4dr, etc) and are getting order numbers within a couple of weeks and TPW's shortly thereafter, are you ordering LT's? You see, I am being given some serious run around by several dealers and even Chevrolet. One minute I am told a shortage of wheels, next CAFE, next a shortage of rear axles, next government is buying them and sending them overseas. When I ordered my 2k Silverado LT 2500 2WD 4dr LB two weeks ago I was told that it would likely be 8 to 14 weeks. I spoke with the dealer yesterday and he told me we had one more shot at GM accepting my order in a couple of weeks and chances were not very good. Likely would roll into a 2001 model and I wouldn't see it until Sept/Oct. I spoke with Chevrolet today and they said that it was definitely going to be a 2001 and best case would be Nov/Dec 2000. Anybody have any idea what's going on here? Something isn't lining up here and I'm not sure what it is yet. Now you see why I don't understand everyone getting order numbers and TPW's within a matter of a few weeks or even a few months. But 9-10 months? When I was looking for a new truck in Nov 99, I was told that all would be 4 doors in Feb. So I did my research when the info became available (in Feb), went down ordered the truck - was told that they had just been receiving 4 doors for a couple of weeks and that orders were going to be cut of in a couple of weeks from that day. Huh? Also, if I am in the cue this early why wouldn't I get a 2001 in Aug/Sept? What's with this Nov/Dec non-sense? I live in the Los Angeles area. Is this my problem? Any info anyone can provide would be greatly appreciated and thanks in advance.
Roger, I have finished my 5th wheel setup and hope to post pics soon. I had the fold-a-cover on my '89 and liked it very much. I have put a new one on my Y2K LS 4dr. I installed a tool/fuel combo which is about the same width and depth of the front panel. I removed the tool box lid since the fold-a-cover lid is almost flush with the top of the tool box anyway. With the cover folded forward and the trailer hooked up, the fuel filler is directly accessible. Total fuel is 24gal. plus 41gal. I also installed the brake controller behind the CD storage door which makes it very accessible, but hides it when I'm not towing the 5th wheel. My first trip will be early next month.
The real issue is with your dealer. It sounds like they dont have allocation for the truck. I ran into this at several dealers before my order was taken. I made a point of asking the dealer about the allocation before talking about anything else. They all want you to "write it up", but not all will be able to enter the order and have it accepted by GM (Allocation).
GM has had limited production capacity for the Silverado extended cabs for the last year. I have read about others in this forum who had trouble getting the 2500 Silverado. I am willing to bet they are putting all their resources towards meeting the demand on the 1500 4 door trucks, and making a 2500 here and there.
They make them, but a 2500 2wd 4 door long box is not the most common thing on a lot. In fact, I have never seen one at a dealership, and I have visited many here in Wisconsin.
Good Luck, and maybe reconsider the 1500. The truck you describe sounds like a rig to haul a 5th wheel or camper though.
1500 Ls Ext cab Z71 March 14th accepted by gm March 21st got TPW of 4-10-00
The 2500's are really hard to get they might have even stopped taking orders on them.
About the wheels and axle runaround you got
The 3.73 axle, P265 tires, AL wheels and more options you can look at at http://www.wheels.com under assembly lines they are in limited production only thing i know of you can not get anymore this yr is the rear slider. I dont know about the Nov/Dec date they gave you Aug/sept sounds about right if you get your 2001 order in early. GOOD LUCK
It's an allocation problem & your on the s*it end of the stick. Get all your info together and fax to area dealers (50 mile radius) see what happens then unless you are to far committed on this order. My first dealer I ordered w/told me the same stories 6-8 weeks, called at 7 weeks no allocation, waited 7 more, no allocation, faxed info to other dealers accepted the one who proved he could deliver then cancelled first order. 2nd order 63 days from date of order to recieving truck. Y2K 2500 LS, Shortbox, 2wd yadda yadda yadda.
I ordered a silverado 2500 LS 4wd shortbox ext cab Oct 29,99.. the hold up is the wheels forged alum. dealer advises that one more chance to get it this year, he has an allocation (at least that is what he sez) and will try 3/28/00 to see if have wheels..I can get with steel wheels. Any body know of a good looking after market wheel for the 2500? brand, cost etc. Maybe I should get it anyway and sell it on Ebay!! If I let slide to a 2001 I will look for a dealer that has allocations..that is the key as other folks have found out. I have read that the 2001's will have the HD line with 5sp automatics and 6sp sticks anybody know where there is more info on the 2001's Thanks for the info...
Thanks for the info. I didn't even consider the tool box, extra tank combo. But with that and the fold-a-cover I think that is the way I will be going. Good idea....

The forged wheels look like aftermarket wheels already. I would check around as you state, unless your in love with the factory wheels. Do a search on yahoo or whatever with just "wheels". There are a ton of places selling new take offs, and aftermarket stuff. Otherwise it sounds like you will have to wait.
What makes a 2500 a 2500 other than the added capacity? I know you can get a bigger powerplant ect.
Ryan:
Not planning on accessories other than the fold a cover and bed mat.
Bill, In your earlier post, you said that you could get the fold a cover for around $200 thru the dealer. If that is true, its a real good deal. I paid about $560 for my new one recently and about the same many years ago for the one I had on my old Chevy. However, you may want to check into this a little more. I think that GM Accessories may have some bad info on price and item. It is possible that for $200 you just get a standard vinyl tonneau cover and not the fold a cover. I have talked with Fold A Cover on several occasions and I don't think that their manufacturing cost plus typical GM markup on accessories is consistent with the $200 price. Hopefully you are right, but don't get burned. Based on my prior experience, its still worth the higher price. BTW, there is another company with a similiar product that just started production a few months ago if you are interested.
Here are the holdups as I believe! 1) Dealer allocation 2)2500 3)Long bed 4) LT wheels (polished aluminum). The 2500's are tough to get and the Long bed also. Additionally the polished wheels were on constraint. Add to this the high demand/low supply, dealers not tightly connected got the short end of allocations!
I ordered my 2500 LS, short bed with aluminum wheels and had to modify the order because the "LT" wheels were on constraint and they did not even have enough to put on the LT, let alone the LS as option.
Also, the slider had a lot of problems with cracking, so they cancelled order from supplier (I got mine without, but may leave it!
I love mine (only 1 week old today though)! Can't wait until I get it broken in and can hook up the trailer and check that power! (6.0 litre)
P.S. Just for general info, my 2500/HD suspension 2wd sits 3 inches higher than my 91 GMC 1/2 ton 4wd with helper spring!
Re:the tonnau covers, the Silverado brochure shows a fold-a-cover, BUT the price listed at edmunds and the dealer, for that matter, for $206(list) is a standard vinyl one. I looked into it and the fold-a-cover is around $800 with GM.
Absolutely right. FYI..oddball world! I tried to order a '99 Silverado LS,2500 4x4..all options except leather, cell phone. Was told they could not get allocation, so I cancelled. Finally got allocation at a GMC dealer in Spokane, $500 over invoice, guaranteed. The original order was back in early Dec. Last Monday I got a call for the Chev dealer, the '99 that I ordered was in. Except it is a '00, 4dr, everything else being the same. He wants $1159 more than the Edmunds listing. He had a $328 ad fee, wouldn't budge. Had to have that or go broke. So I walked..the pickup is still sitting in his show room. I can wait for the GMC from an honest dealer. Not in that big of a hurry to spend $30K+. However had he came down to a more suitable price, I would have took it. His attitude was take it or leave it, so I left it. Weird world isn't it?????
The dealer told me the Fold A Cover is the "factory tonneau" option. I am going to call today and confirm once again. If it is the snap kind of cover I will insist they remove it. I hope you are not right, and the dealer is correct. I will be major pissed otherwise. What to do then? I am ordering this truck under the gm supplier program, it took me several dealers to get the order placed. If I make to big of stink I think they will say take it or leave it, as they can sell the truck to someone else for alot more money.
Better Yet... I am going to call GM right now and ask them. It is 7:15 am here in Wisconsin, dont know there hours but I will try.
Check out www.advancecover.com sounds like it might be a little better but very similar to Fold A Cover. I don't know the details or price, but again I paid about $560 for the Fold A Cover for a short bed with the Total Access option (front panel opens and locks).
Thanks to those of you who responded to my original post #80. It looks like most of you are ordering 1500's and that's why you're having a lot better luck than I am. As several of you have confirmed, I've apparently ordered a combination of truck that has constraints on several pieces. The 2500 (any flavor) is heavily constrained, the wheels for the 2500 LT is constrained and LT (1SC) is constrained. If I wanted a 1500, I would have little/no problem my dealer has rows and rows of them on the lot right now - base/LS/LT - 2wd/4wd - LB/SB. As far as allocation, I actually did ask about that and he said allocation was no problem. Of course, what else is he going to say? Sorta assumed with several 1500's on the lot, allocation probably isn't a problem. Could be incorrect on my part and I have no way to verify for sure. I've seen the wheels.com site before and that kinda told me part of the story. I also noticed that the cutoff date was Jan 28th. Likely GM isn't taking anymore orders for 2k. Did not order a rear slider so I knew that wasn't the problem. As far as getting LT with steel wheels and then buying some nice aftermarket wheels - I'm told that isn't an option - Chevrolet won't build it without 'em. Wouldn't hurt my feelings - 2500 forged alum wheels are ugly anyway. 1500 wheels with an 8 bolt pattern would rock. I guess I'll have to put up with Chevrolet's poor business model until I get the truck or until I get so pissed off I go buy a Ford or Dodge.
Yep, You all were right... That is what I get for shooting my mouth off about GM and there option pricing. The dealer stuck to the story about the fold a cover until I insisted on proof. The salesperson indicated a new truck just arrived with the cover ordered and set out to show me. They showed me alright. They showed me a "soft cover" with no locking feature that I could tell. They would not put it on the truck until delivery. It was really windy and they were afraid of damaging something I guess. I should have insisted they pull it inside. I am pissed, but have no recourse other than to insist that they take the cover off my order out. That seems to be an issue also, they think it will affect the build date, GM customer service says it will not. I like it when they communicate!
I need to decided today on keeping the cover or telling them to keep it. I still like the fold a cover idea, although my wife said if you are going to spend 560 on the fold a cover, why not spend another 150 and get a ARE lid. We'll see. Thats why the internet rocks, great place to do research.
already, you can also go to www.foldacover.com for the original. The issue of a folding cover vs. hard cover depends on what you plan to carry. Anything higher that the bed is difficult with a single piece cover. This is not a problem with the folding cover which covers the front 25% of the bed when open. It also only weighs about 40 lbs and is easy to remove if necessary.
the lot at a dealer in Green Bay, Wisconsin. I was leafing through the paper last night and noticed an ad for Gandrud Chevrolet in Green Bay. They had a special lease price for Silverado's listed, so I called to ask about terms as I was thinking about leasing. During my conversation with a salesperson, he mentioned having lots of four doors on the lot. I laughed and said yeah right. He said they had 100+ as of a week ago. They are also selling them for $100 over invoice. This is very significant, as I am probably going to cancel my current order because of the confusion on the factory tonneau cover.
Larry: Good points on the Fold a Cover. The very reason I liked the idea in the first place. The soap opera continues...
Check out my photos at http://photos.excite.com/photocenter/album?albumid=628022 Shows Fold-A-Cover, 5th wheel hitch, spray-in bed liner (grey), 41gal tank with tool box access under the cover and brake controller located in the CD storage area. Let me know what you think.
Someone asked about aftermarket wheels for a 2000 Silverado 2500. Check out www.tirerack.com Awesome site for wheels/tires. In the wheels section you can select your vehicle and add the wheels of your choice. COOL!
Tonneau Cover Update: Its down to three choices. 1. Dyna Glass / Guidon Fiberglass lid. This cover allows you to open the tailgate keeping the lid locked, a feature which would come in handy if you had the locking tailgate mechanism installed. The cover comes in painted, gel coat, or vinyl covered. Anyone have experience with these guys? 2. Fold A Cover. Discussed at length here. 3. Access Cover. Rolling vinyl cover which "locks" to allow access to the bed without removing cover. What I like about this one is the rolling feature. Just like Larry said about the fold a cover, nice to have it there if you need it and not there if you dont.

Bill
Only 3 plants make the silverados
1 in canada, fort wayne Indiana, and a plant in michigan i think pontiac.

I once had a friend that bought a GMC about 4 years ago. It had the GMC emblem on one door and Chevy on the other, thought someone forgot which brand they were building that day.
To say the least I've never heard anyone mention this Missouri plant before, but GMC has told me this 3 times now. They think I'm crazy.... and maybe I am.

www.rumseytruck.com/product/fac.htm if anyone is intrested in it. Certainly looks to have possibilities, since I haul a 5th Wheel Trailer.
Have a nice day,
Roger.
I ordered my truck end of October 99.
Was told 1st of January that interior changes
were never made, would have to reorder. On
1-18-00, truck 1 was reordered which was 1500
Silverado... LS. 5.3 longbed extendedcab
trailoring equiped foglights buckets, the list
goes on and on. Trust built 2-21-00, received
on 3-7-00. dealer made up for delays by giving me
truck at cost, i can't say enough about how well
michael chevrolet in fresno california treated
us.
anyway we love the truck, have 2000 miles on it
and not a single flaw this at time, except it
makes me go to sleep when I drive it. It was
worth the wait, agonizing as it was.
bye
I have finished my 5th wheel setup and hope to post pics soon.

Larry
Bill
The 2500's are really hard to get they might have even stopped taking orders on them.
About the wheels and axle runaround you got
The 3.73 axle, P265 tires, AL wheels and more options you can look at at http://www.wheels.com under assembly lines they are in limited production only thing i know of you can not get anymore this yr is the rear slider. I dont know about the Nov/Dec date they gave you Aug/sept sounds about right if you get your 2001 order in early. GOOD LUCK

Any body know of a good looking after market wheel for the 2500? brand, cost etc.
Maybe I should get it anyway and sell it on Ebay!!
If I let slide to a 2001 I will look for a dealer that has allocations..that is the key as other folks have found out.
I have read that the 2001's will have the HD line with 5sp automatics and 6sp sticks anybody know where there is more info on the 2001's
Thanks for the info...
Have a nice day....:)

What makes a 2500 a 2500 other than the added capacity? I know you can get a bigger powerplant ect.
Ryan:
Not planning on accessories other than the fold a cover and bed mat.
Bill
In your earlier post, you said that you could get the fold a cover for around $200 thru the dealer.

All you have a nice day...:)
Roger (Short time wait I think now)
Better Yet... I am going to call GM right now and ask them. It is 7:15 am here in Wisconsin, dont know there hours but I will try.
Update Soon.
Bill
Order was placed 2/9/00.
Truck is 2k LS, 2WD, 4 DR XC, LB, Indigo Blue with graphite interior, 4.8, locker.
Guess I'll get my VIN next week.
LOL

I need to decided today on keeping the cover or telling them to keep it. I still like the fold a cover idea, although my wife said if you are going to spend 560 on the fold a cover, why not spend another 150 and get a ARE lid. We'll see. Thats why the internet rocks, great place to do research.
Thanks for the link Larry. Checking it out now.

Larry: Good points on the Fold a Cover. The very reason I liked the idea in the first place. The soap opera continues...
