Question about the post-purchase phone survey:
My Honda salesman is begging me to give him all 5's when the national Honda surveyor calls me about my experience with them. He says that even if I'm not happy with the finance or service, all ratings of the survey will affect only him directly. So if I give any less than all 5's, he'll have to take a cut in commission. Is this true? Or this a sneaky way of getting the dealership a 100% score when they don't fully deserve it?
I had a good experience with my guy throughout negotiation, especially since he went through such great lengths to share personal stories and spend literally hours with me as I lined all my little ducklings in a row. But I am not at all happy with the fast talk afterwards, surprise hidden costs, and excuses. Thoughts?
Don't do it. In my business (not car related) this is known as "feedback begging." Honda wants YOUR opinion to improve their service for the next few thousand customers. If you lie, you may benefit your salesperson, but it will negatively impact all who follow in your phantom footprints
> Warranty
As for the warranty issue, personally, I skip 90% of them. Warranties are not offered from the goodness of the heart of the seller. They are sold to make a profit based on the assumption that the cost of honoring the warranty will be less than the cost of selling it to you. Sure, if the engine gives out during the warranty period, your warranty more than paid for itself. But given the quality and long-life of most Hondas, you're probably throwing your money away.
> Availability
Reading this board, it sounds like Fits are becoming somewhat more available. Prices appear to be coming down. But I still don't see them advertised in my local San Jose CA paper very often. Six months ago, I went to a dealer, there was only one (already sold) Fit on the lot. Is inventory increasing?
These surveys and the State Attorney general may be the only thing keeping the lid on and keeping us from being mauled by german shepards in the cubicle or something so maybe they have some use.
I usually advise against the extended warranty, but only because most people get taken for $1800-$2000+ for them in the finance office.
Honda is one of the few manufacturers to let dealerships competitively sell the Hondacare warranty online. Myhondawarranty.com. etc. This has resulted in prices $700 for a simple sedan for the 8yr/120kmi warranty to about $1200 for $30000 vehicles. Might as well take advantage of it in Honda's case and get it online or beat the finance guy over the head with the online prices if you want a extended warranty.
Most Honda dealerships have 10-20 service bays, and lotsa expensive equipment just like chevy, toyota and everyone else and they all generate about half the stores profits (lotsa warranty work) so there is some constant here.

Most of the time the dealers fill the form out for you and some will just make you sign a blank one!
Sometimes the price on the car is determined by that worksheet. I won't fill it out at the dealership and I don't give all 5's any more unless I believe it really is a 5. I think I filled out one very poorly due to how badly I was treated and the dealership called me up and yelled at me on the phone for it! I hung up on them!
It's too bad they link it just to the sales person as the ones I recall doing involved the entire dealership.
I've also been told if you don't fill it out the way they like they won't do a good job servicing your car.
I don't know how true that is tho.
And, they are important to the salesperson and the store.
I never ask for all 5's but I do explain how they work and how important they are. I generally get top marks.
The ones that really get me are the ones that say..." The process took way too long!".
I would rather not sell a car than recieve a bad survey and my customers usually know this. I just don't want a customr to buy a car from me and not leave happy. It's not worth it.
Well, if the customer hadn't haggled over the price for three hours, it sure could have gone a lot faster!
Honda Fit 5A White w/ Blk interior
Listed at 17683.80 including "Price Adjust" and floor mats installed
My Deal:
List price 16727.
Trade in 1425.48 (98 Nissan Sentra rough condition [front bumper falling off!] 95+k mi)
Tax 960.00 (should have been 956.35 so they got 3.65 extra right there
Doc and lic transfer etc. 138.48
Total paid by check 16,400.00
They nailed me on the mats, but my trade was rough, they may not have realized how rough it was.
Had a hard time finding white w/ blk interior around here (IL, WI, IN).
No BS about extras or add ons. They probably figured "get him out quick before he realizes he should get a better deal"
Had 90 miles on it due to dealer exchange.
Like the car, wish I had a better deal.
Granted, not everyone will get such a good deal on a Corolla (he was in the right place at the right time at end of month); but my point is these types of negotiating opportunities exist for other cars but not for the Fit. And I'm not trying to turn this thread into 'Fit vs. Corolla' (it's just an example), and I still love my car. But I'll admit what he got for his money compared with mine made me rethink my purchase. He got at least 50% more car for the same money. It will be interesting to see what price the Fit goes for once American production kicks in and there are plenty of them and supply meets demand. I'm guessing $2000 less?
I was at the Toyota dealer today getting an oil change on my Hi-Lux. Currently I live outside the US. My wife wanted to look at all the cars so ok, she sat in all the Toyotas and then we went to Mitsubishi and then over to Honda on the way home.
I owned a 2005 Jazz 1.3L that model is selling here for P690,000 ($14,972.01 USD) and there is no discount on any cars in the Philippines. I owned the Jazz for almost a year. Except for the fuel economy being lower than i'd like it was a great car but after sitting in the Camry and the Accord. I sat in the back seats of the cars just for fun and to see how much room they have.
salesman here get paid by the day no commission so they really don't care and having a customer looking at cars makes them look good to their boss.
You really have to ask yourself why is the Fit/Jazz so expensive? Great car with a sweet shifter but you have to baby it to get the good economy but other cars also offer a lot as well. The seats also felt pretty hard in the Jazz I sat in today, but not as bad as the Civics.
If your friend got a Corolla for that price it's a good deal but full MSRP nah, I had one and we all pay MSRP here. No incentives on the Fit but a lot of incentives on other cars in the US. That can easily swing me around because money doesn't grow on trees.
I think the new updated Fit is going to be much better, it's shame it's coming out in 2009.
Anyways, what do you people think $16245 excluding doc fees and taxes for a Base Fit AT Lunar Mist in Northern California? I am I paying too much?
Are you driving the 1.3L Jazz or the 1.5L Jazz? Manual or CVT? I had a 2005 Honda Jazz 1.3L Manual. I never got the fuel economy that they claimed but I rarely left the city and there was alot of traffic, it's worse now.
Personally I'd never buy a car without test driving it first. I also have never used a broker but one car can feel better than another car to me even in the same model and some feel better when they drive etc....
Why not rent a car when you get back to the US? That's what I am going to do. Drive the car, then buy the one you like. Sight unseen would be too scary for me and when you get here if it's more than a month or two the prices might come down a bit. Edmunds lists the Base with a Manual as having an MSRP of $14,650 and a TMV which includes the destination charge of $595 and a TMV price of $15,126 and that's about $120 under MSRP.
So it looks to me like you are paying $1,000 over MSRP! Maybe in California that's a good price but for me anything over MSRP is a deal breaker! Maybe California cars cost $1,000 more tho? :confuse: You have to go to Edmunds home page and look up your car with your zip code. It's easy and then select New cars then Honda and then Fit and then select your trim level, and then Price with options which will give you your figures. You choose the color and it will show that the Fit has no factory options and adds the destination charge and then you get a TMV price and MSRP price as well. It's very easy. But $16K for a Fit is too much unless that is out the door with taxes and doc fees included.
Yes. The Fit is too hot to get a great price, but your auto-broker (who's supposed to help you beat the rest of us) is offering you a car which is overpriced from msrp! Most people in this forum obtained their Fits for msrp + doc fee (0-$500) + ttl (different for each state). $16245 is about $700 over the msrp.
Also, do any of you any where actually have a "BASE" model? It seems like all the models are the SPORT. thank you!
$15,713 Fit Sport Automatic
including cargo tray, wheel locks, bumper protection, cargo cover, and carpet floor mats. Each dealer was quoting different prices for these items.
Most would give the first three easy ( a value of $500-600 according to them). One dealer wanted $109 for the cargo cover, another $240. I would e-mail the dealers with a statement like "_____ dealer is offering it all to me with these... at this price. Can you match or beat their price.?" So those items ended up lumped into the price.
No trade in. No financing/ paid cash (but I didn't tell them that ahead of time.)
No one was willing to include the destination charge in the price, so I paid that at $595.
Then I paid registration/ license fees of $178.75
A documentation fee of $55
And the rest was sales taxes at my L.A. County resident rate. (Sales tax varies in Calif. depending on your county, not the dealership's)
Out the door was $17898
I hope this helps out.
My Jazz is an LSi 1.4L MT. I get an average of about 6.1L/ 100km. Most of my driving is through back farm roads in NL and DE visiting families houses. But there was a time period when I first purchased the car that I was commuting about once a week 250 km one direction and back at the end of the week. I can push it to about 140Km on the autobahn, and that is what I did on average during my long commute, but it doesn't seem to like to go faster. I am fine with that. There have only been a hand full of times where I needed to pass on a up-grade and the little engine that could, just simply couldn't. That can be a bit embarassing especially with a Mercedes hauling up behind you wanted to pass. One feature of the Jazz that I am impressed by is the tight turning radius. It is such an advantage when driving around the tiny Europeon roads and getting out of tight spots.
Anyways, I hope the FIT will live up to my expectations.
Hey that's great! I think you'll be happy with it. Myself the dealers overcharging for th car is crazy tho it's an economy car. Honda should stop the dealers from gouging as it's bad for business.
Just curious why you like the base model Fit? It doesn't have cruise control.
My 1.3L had no cruise control or much of anything but it was a pure city car so power wasn't an issue.
If my math is correct 6.1 L/100km is pretty good if you were doing 140kph!
Oh for others reading this post that's about 39 mpg at 87mph.
I'd have killed for my Jazz to get anywhere near that type of economy! I was 9.5km/100km!!! :lemon:
Thats worse than a fully loaded Accord!
Still my wife really likes the Fit and we will need two cars. MINI was not an option as there isn't one anywhere near where we will be moving to. Be nice if my Jazz actually got great economy like it's supposed to.
The seats are a bit flat tho and not much fun for long drives. i wonder if the US model got a better interior?
Enjoy your Fit, I'm sure it's going to be a lot of fun for you.
Good to see dealers are at least charging only full retail. I can't wait to see the discounts when the scion xD arrives because competition will drive prices lower. unless Scion dealers gouge. Then Honda can say, see we gouge less.
Paying 17000 when a Ford Focus is available for 12000 or so , mazda3, mazda6, versa, corolla, accord, civic lx etc is completely your choice. You aren't even trapped on a rooftop
Good Luck

Spoken like a true car dealer/salesperson. You know I could prove you wrong about price gouging. here is a link!
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Price_gouging
No one forces you to buy a car but car dealers try and take advantage of their customers ignorance and gullibility as best they can. Google for opinions on car dealers, not the most loved of people.
Why don't you guys try charging MSRP instead of tacking on tons of fees that you don't reveal to the customers. Discounts aren't favors to us they still increase your volume sales and also your total profits.
Overcharging well you are right i vote with my wallet and I also tell all my friend what places not to deal with and why and what car sales person not to deal with and why. If they are good then I reccomend them.
I hope the bad price gouging dealers lose everything and go out of business, get fined by the Gov't and maybe get some time in a small place with bars to think about how they ought to do business.
And.. regardless of wikipedia, I agree with him. No one has to buy a Fit. It is like any other car. If you don't like the price, don't buy it. If only one dealer is charging $1000 over MSRP, then he won't sell many. If they are all charging that, well then, maybe that's what the car is worth.
It doesn't matter if it is a Fit for $1000 over MSRP, or a Ford Focus for $1000 under MSRP. It is the buyer's job to know the market for the car. If the buyer pays $2K more than the going price, then who's fault is that?
Don't blame car dealers for ignorance and gullibility.. Almost everyone has parents and the benefit of a public education system. If those two things fail a person, then a car dealer is the least of their problems.

The Mazda Miata was a hot property when introduced for numerous years only available for 1000s over MSRP. Now it sits for 5000 off.
Definition of gouging is pretty loose here. In the car business the closest that comes to it is usually limited to people in the stix with only one or two dealers total around. Even then its limited as folks can go to Mt. Pilot where there is more selection.
Every merchant since the early Chinese has kept prices on stuff in demand higher and put items gathering dust on the markdown rack.

Free market isn't that what it is all about...
What type of fantasy world do you live in - "everyone has parents and education..." how far is that going to get anyone if the parents are dysfunctional and the school-system is a joke...please.
I thought we were talking car prices. I know what I paid and I know the demand. No one can comment when we don't know the full details of each individual's decision to give in to such a purchase. Never assume you know the reasons behind it, that is ignorant in itself.
I thank you all for your input and will kindly end my participation at this point.
Are you talking about Lithia Springs, GA? I had a great experience there today.... hmmm....well I did not do financing there but the finance guy Joe was really great....who did you have?
I got a Red Fit I will trade you, I wanted the silver and there was a blue there today! It is so funny, today they had all the colors that I did not a whole lot but I love my Fit. The only problem is I cannot find the control for the tilt steering to tilt the wheel!!! I thought I looked everywhere and the book says it is in there!!! Do you know how to use it?
Anyway car buying can be difficult but like you said, just enjoy your car!!
BTW did you get any floor mats??????? I don't have any!
Yes, I bought my Fit at Team Honda in Lithia Springs. I don't think we're supposed to mention dealership employees by name here on the boards though.
The financing experience was terrible, but overall the people were nice. I felt gouged, but I allowed it because I wanted the car, and I was ready to trade in my old Toyota.
Thanks for the trade offer, but I like the silver. It's a shame you had to settle for a color you didn't really want.
The tilt steering wheel control is just below the steering wheel on the left, to my knowledge. After I got mine to the right tilt level I left it and haven't touched it since. Good luck finding it, it should be there. Unless... maybe if you bought a base and it's an option on the sport only? :confuse:
I did get the dealer to throw in some of the carpet floor mats, but I had a hard time getting them to keep the appointment to install the clips (went twice, with appointment, and they told me they had no record of the appointment), so I gave up. No clips, but they don't slide too much. Mats are essential.
Enjoy your Fit - I'll look for you on the roads!
Anyway, I do like read but my last car was read and I thought silver would be great b/c it would def. retain its color. I SWORE my next car would be silve but I cannot tell you how happy I am with my red car and if I really did not want it I would have gone elsewhere, there is good inventory here in Atl right now but I wanted to go there...I had been there before and I liked my sales person and just figured most of the colors look ok in their own way but I am kind of pleased to have red again. People remember me as the girl with the little red car.
have fun,, see you on the road!
She got her job, we went back there, and were astonished to see the only Fit on the lot had $4000 in add-ons, including $2000 for alloy wheels (which is interesting, since the Sport model already has alloy wheels). We said "well, we'll have to think about it, because we don't want to pay $4000 extra".
The saleslady said "you can order one, but it will take you 2 months, and you'll end up with a 2008 model".
So we went to the Fort Collins dealer, put down a deposit on the next Fit to arrive, and a week later had our car at MSRP. In fairness to the Greeley dealer, the Fort Collins dealer NOW has a 2-month waiting list.
Yes, supply and demand is legitimate, and dealers don't make much money on car sales, so it's OK for Greeley to tack on the extras if people are willing to pay for them. WE just _weren't_ willing to pay for them.
FWIW, this has happened before with Hondas. When the Accord first came out, my flight instructor had to drive 120 miles to a dealer in a sparsely populated area to get one in a timely manner without paying for extras. And I know a fellow who had to go to Kansas City (650 miles) to get an 2006 Fit without waiting for months.
Either you pay the money, or buy an inferior (i.e., non-Honda) car, or decide it's worth the wait.

That said, I love my Fit, and I had to drive past three other dealerships to find one that had one on hand to drive and buy. I couldn't believe how much room there was inside, and how great it drives. I couldn't even think of another car I'd be interested in for the money.

You mean you don't know how to use them, or when?
To use them, switch the gear select to "S" (farthest back).
Hit "+" (right side paddle) to shift up, and hit "-" (left side) to shift down.
As far as "when" - based on my experience with the Sport, I think you could accelerate a bit faster if you're controlling the gear selection. My only real use for it would be for downshifting on a long downhill road (we live near the Rocky Mountains) to keep the speed down without riding the brakes.
As far as I'm concerned, if you like shifting, get a manual tranny (my preference).
I LOVE MY FIT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I have no problem with good dealers making money but I dont know how anyone can add 4 or 5 thousand dollars worth of add ons to a FIT...there is just not that much to add on!!!
Wow!
Well, apparently the dealer adds on something which was already there ($2000 in alloy wheels, when the car already came with alloy wheels), or something you can't see (like some sort of "seal" material). Each of those "add-ons" cost $2000.
Thanks and let me know if I need to move this post.
If you can sell it private sale as the dealer will not give you the same price as private sale since they have to resell it anyway. Plus dealers always lowball trade-ins.
Buy low sell high.
I'm actually considering the Fit and the accord but already owned a Jazz which is the same as the Fit as I'm currently outside the country. Fit's don't always get great economy you have to drive them with a very easy right foot and shift very low 3,000 rpms or less. If you cruise a lot on the highway that's another factor, also loading up a Fit with weight is going to kill your fuel economy.
But to answer your question look up the value of your Accord on Edmunds and put it up for a bit over what you want so if you want say $16.5K and it's worth $16K put it up for $17-17.5K as people will always talk you down so leave wiggle room.
I'd also suggest that you buy a new Fit at MSRP over a used one. New car warranty will be better and you know how you've treated it since new, ie: no crashes or major problems.
Just my 2 cents worth.

I recently sold my car privately (a protege) and my roomate has sold her rodeo privately. Let me tell you...around here in Atlanta (cant speak for any place else), there are very few private sale vehicles. They are all dealer and used car lots....We get a number of great leads in the first day of the Ad on cars.com combined with an online ad of the local newspaper. I would never consider giving the car to the dealer knowing that people really like the Honda name....I feel like you might have luck selling. There was however and still is a big Accord sell off due to the new design coming out so many people have been able to buy Accords this summer at somewhat discounted MSRP prices...
Still something to consider is that if you research the Civic you might find its estimated fuel economy is higher than the Fit slightly which astounds me given that the new Civic is like a mid size family car now!!!!
At any rate, with the Fit ready to change designs for 08 you will want to wait till Fall for the new one, or you can watch for a sell off soon....I bought the Fit last week and I am very happy with it but I think I might tire of it in a few years...it has some grumpy shifting in low gears...dont listen to me, I am not a car driver expert, there is something not very smooth about it at times but it cruises nicely at high speeds and I am having fun with downshifting on hills with the paddle shifters!
I do not know how many MPG's I will get on the first tank yet but my roomate got the 07 Civic ES so we will be able to compare and I can report back at a later date.
I believe that there is a buyer for every car at every price range and if you really want to sell your Accord, I think you will. I learned a lot about selling cars from cars.com, they even give you a bill of sale and my tag office showed me how to transfer the title and I did not accept a personal check!
You know what? You can take out a 25.00 limited online ad or a 49.00 renewable ad with 3 pictures, and run till sold! You get page view reports so you can tell if people are looking of course you only need one good buyer. Also you can type a lot, like 2000 words total I think within two different description boxes so you can make your sell, talk about the good things you have done or whatever is positive, if it is single owner, make sure you say so etc, etc...I never knew how easy it was to sell a car! For a very small investment, you can test the waters and then if it sells you have to buy a new car! Ha! with the 08's coming out you might be in car purgatory while you are waiting or maybe get a deal on an 07. I had no problem getting 400 off MSRP for my new Fit, just check the local inventory online in your area dealer by dealer and then you can determine if you can get a discount. If you get ready to buy, just contact all the internet managers and tell them you are wanting to buy that day and ask for their best deal (but really be truthful about buying that day). Also, I was able to put 4000 on a credit card so I got some Amazon points for books. Some people write about Credit card down payments and it is a good idea if you need the points for something. Also, it's good to tell the internet manager how you are paying after you get the good price to be sure they dont change things up on you if they dont like the way you are paying (like if you are not using their financing)..
Anyhow good luck but do not let the dealer steal the trade, it is just not worth it...be empowered! Sell your own car!!!
good luck!
I think you probably meant this for the guy I was replying to. I don't currently live in the US and I own a diesel Hi-Lux. In 6 months I will be back in the US and will need a car straight away.
I do agree that the new Accord is driving down prices on the 2007 models so for people who are in the US it could be a good time to save big!
Me, i have to wait and I REALLY want a diesel Accord.
I already owned a 2005 Honda jazz 1.3L which they didn't bother with in the US. The manual tranny is so sweet to drive, but my economy was about half what it should have been. I drove the auto and it seemed ok but that was in the 1.5Liter and I just drove it up and down the mountain that the dealership was located on. It was ok and for me the paddles are not my style I want to shift the car myself. I'd be happy with a sequential manual with a real clutch but no car maker has ever made one. I'm curious to see the 2008 Fit and what they've done with it. or most people the Fit is a good buy and it's on my list but more as a second car for my wife along with some others. Once you've driven a good diesel you won't want gas again.
The Civic does in fact get better highway economy according to everyone I talk to but it's a different car. i don't think the US gets the Honda City but they put the magic seats in that but it wasn't comfortable enough so they pulled them out after 1-2 years. It was a sedan and slotted between the Fit and the Civic. I hated the last civic I owned, mainly because I just couldn't get comfortable on long drives with it and I drove a lot back then. I will again when i am back in the US.
Good advice for someone who has an Accord and wants to sell it. which is kinda what I said sell it private sale. Much better and you will get more money than a dealer will give you.
Are you in the UK?
I think they might be bringing diesel in the 08 US Model Fit but who knows?
Hey the new Civic is like being in a space ship...pretty funky, I think you either love it or hate it but it feels very spacious with the dash a million feet out...sort of like a flat with vaulted ceilings!
Yes I did agree with you about private sale for this guy but I wanted to talk it up and give him confidence because it can be very nerve shattering as most people do not get the chance to learn how to sell cars on their own...well i dont know about most but many are just so ready to get rid of their car at the dealership that they just don't put much thought into it even though they know they can do better privately....
I do not know how to drive a manual so I am feeling like a big shot shifting gears with the paddles. Honestly, it feels like all that paddle shifting can hurt the car but the books says to do it and the paddles are there to be used! Hey, I got really nice black wheels on my read Fit...I did not know how great they would look...really cool!! Cheers and sorry!
Are you in the UK?
Actually I'm in the Philippines right now.
I think they might be bringing diesel in the 08 US Model Fit but who knows?
Honda is saying they won't but no matter what they say it's all a big secret until it comes out at the Auto Show.
But hopefully they will at some point. The Accord is slated for a diesel. hat's what i'd buy IF it's available in 6 months.
Yes I did agree with you about private sale for this guy but I wanted to talk it up and give him confidence because it can be very nerve shattering as most people do not get the chance to learn how to sell cars on their own...well i dont know about most but many are just so
Oh I know, I think that's a good thing, dealerships make a lot of money off of trade-ins because people don't want the hassle of selling their car privately and they don't know what to do. I've sold most of my cars privately and only traded in a few when I didn't have the option to buy a car then sell the other one. Mostly when i only had one parking spot at my apt and you weren't allowed 2 cars for any reason.
Once you do a private sale the next one is easier.
I think you gave him good advice.
Hey no offense taken at all, really. and yeah it's tough if you don't know how to drive a stick shift. The paddles give you a feeling of control that most auto drivers never had before.
i'm teaching my wife to drive a stick and she is now driving my 4 door hi-Lux pickup truck and this is a BIG truck and she's pretty good at it. She's also never driven prior to this. She's only 4'11" tall and she does need a cushion but still she is beginning to like it. She'd probably be amazing with the fit. She never drove my Jazz tho. I was too worried about her driving in that city with all the traffic. We have that here and she does have her license but i let her practice on the old military base and she is getting better.
Actually you will not hurt the car with the paddles unless you downshift too many gears too quickly 5th to 2nd kind of a thing. i doubt it will engage 1st above like 10mph or so anyway.
It's a car, have FUN with it and go to YouTube and watch Top gear and Jeremy Clarkson driving that Ferrari F430 with paddle shifters! Great Stuff I'm a big Top Gear fan and Clarkson is a riot to watch and he really drives the cars very hard too. Lots of videos of Fits on there as well.
By all means enjoy your Fit and have a great time with it. cars are not that easy to break. Seriously watch some of the stuff Clarkson and company do to the Mini Cooper You'd think they'd roll it over the way they drive it but it hangs right in there. You won't break anything but a smile when you drive your Fit a bit aggressively, just don't overdo it
