I have read many of the postings about the dealers in Richmond, VA and Mechanisville, VA...to all of you who posted that info, I personally thank you. It saved me hundreds of dollars.

The price quoted by these two dealers was $795 and $840 for a 6/100K/$0 top of the line plan for my TCH. I had intentions of buying the Toyota extended warranty from one of these dealers, but my 'local' dealer stepped up to the plate and we agreed upon a price when I informed them of my findings..in the end to meet the competition, the dealer came down $30 and I went up $30 to end at $845.

As much of a 'car buff' as I am, I had never thought of 'shopping around' on a mfg's warranty. I thought the price was the price, but I was obviously wrong!

You do not have to buy at the time of purchase...if you decide to purchase...shop various dealers, especially the ones I referenced in my previous posting that I learned about from other TCH owners.

You can save hundreds of dollars on the top of the line extended warranty over the MSRP.

Anybody going in to pick up their new TCH take the information with you regarding the lower prices on the extended warranty. Just picked up ours last Tuesday and told the finance manager I could get the 7 year 100,000 mile platinuum for $830 at Toyota Superestore in Kansas and he met the price. I don't think they want to make a habit of selling it for that price so will not disclose the dealership name.

I am purchasing a Camry Hybrid in Toronto. Here in Canada, they charge $1,999 for a 84mo/120,000km Extra Care Toyota warranty. Anyone know if a warranty purchased in the USA applies to a Camry Hybrid that was purchased in Canada?
  • mharris813mharris813 Member Posts: 20
Very true. Yes, take the info with you. When we went to pick up our TCH last week, I was shocked at the prices of the extended warranties. I had already clued my husband into that I could buy it from the place in Kansas.

The finance guy must get a huge bonus for closing the sale with the Ext.Warr. as he was very persistant on me buying one. He kept coming down on his price so much, as I just sat there, stuck on knowing that I could buy it elsewhere!

He finally came down to $1000 for the platinum package, which was more than the superstore, BUT it is all done together, and financed with the car, and I am assured that this is in fact a toyota warranty. IF it had turned out that the superstore warranty had NOT been true toyota, my husband would have been fit to be tied.

I wish now that I would have know for positive and had the printed paperwork with me at the time I picked up my car, but .... live and learn. That's why we share right here, huh? :D

but which Platinum warranty?? There are a number of them!!!!

So you paid extra for some unknown length of warranty and then financed it to boot??

Toyota and the dealer luv ya!!!!!

We bought the 75k mi warranty, thanks.

We are satisfied with our purchase, thanks again.

Has anyone in Canada purchased a Toyota, USA Platimun warranty? Toyota USA says that's no problem. A Virginia dealer says they will sell me a Platinum warranty, no problem. Toyota Canada says that if I buy a USA Platinum warranty for a Canadian purchased Camry, I will have to travel to the dealer I purchased the warranty from if it ever needs waranty service! They even go one outrageous step further and say if I relocate to the USA (I'm living in Ottawa now) and have a Toyota Canada warranty along with my Canadian purchased Camry Hybrid, the warranty will be void! Toyota Canada wants full price for an equivalent 72mo 100,000 mile warranty but as indicated iin this forum and by calling a Virginia dealer, the price is about 50% of the Canadian price. Thanks for a reply to this query.

The Service agreement says under EXCLUSIONS AND RESTRICTIONS, "7. Coverage under this agreement will not apply to any repairs performed outside the United States of America or Canada."

You are supposed to contact your selling dealer for all repair work. If this is not possible you must contact the administrator PRIOR TO PROCEEDING WITH REPAIRS. Toyota 1-800-228-8559.

This is all per the Agreement language.

    At Toyotafinancial.com it says,
    Convenience
When your vehicle needs servicing, take it to any participating Toyota dealer throughout the U.S. and Canada.

Typical dealer crap, but sounds even worse in the Peoples Republic of Canada.

Try Corporate Toyota to straighten the dealer out!!!!!!!!!

I just felt that noone really answered ggav73's question regarding whether we should get the warrant. I would appreciate it if someone would address this questions because I am switching from a 99 Camry to a 2007 TCH (on order) and would like to know whether an extended warranty would be a good investment. I know that on my 99 Camry it would have been a waste to purchase the warranty because I am just now starting to have problems with it - 90 mos and 116K miles later. Yes, the potential repairs would be pricey, but I would have gladly repaired it were it not for the new camry design that made me think of an update/upgrade.

I live in CA where the warranty on the HSD is supposedly 10 yrs 150K miles. If this understanding is incorrect please tell me what the correct warranty # are. My true concern in with the hybrid components and I think that the length of the warranty on that is sufficien to comfort me. Can anyone shed some light on this murky area.
  • wvgasguywvgasguy Member Posts: 1,405
Extended warranties are a personal risk insurance. The TCH should be a reliable Toyota but with any car things can go wrong. There is a lot of expensive things besides the hybrid system that can go wrong after the 36,000 warranty expires. Some win, some lose. How much exposure to risk do you want? If I drove 15,000 miles per year then a 5yr/75K warrant would be worth $800 to me to know I can drive for 5 years with no worry. However I drive 30,000 miles per year and I can't decide if paying $800 for basically 2 1/2 years warranty is worth it. I'm sure if the A/C or something else goes out I would wish I had it.

Like most insurance if every body NEEDED it then it would have to be a lot more expensive. Insurance just spreads the cost out to everyone so that the one who needs it does not bear all the cost.

In the meantime, although no clear answers from here, I got the warranty 7/75k. I drive between 10-15k/year. I also purchased the maintenance plan and I had a good feeling leaving after first oil change without paying anything. Of course, I payed already, I know. I obtained both from Mechanicsville Toyoya, VA, very nice people. I live in Illinois.

    keithet:

Just curious, did you ask the sales, finance, or service folks about the warranty issue?

If you didn't ask the Service Manager, why don't you stop in for an oil change, touchup paint, price some mud-guards or something. Then ask him about the US warranty.

You may get a different answer than the one from sales/finance.

I ended up buying the warranty from the Kansas folks. It is the real Toyota Platinum warranty. No muss, no fuss, no bother.

    YMMV!

I think the extended warranties are optimally suited for someone that drives 15,000 miles or less and plan on keeping the car beyoud the normal warranty

Can someone point me to some of these sites that give good prices for a warranty on the Highlander Hybrid Ltd AWD w/NAV?

What is you opinions of getting one, and what level, for this car? What about this maintenance plan I hear about?
I will be picking up my car later this week, so any input that I can check out ahead of time will be very appreciated.

FYI - I drive around 12-15,000 miles a year, although that may change in 3 years after retirement (higher) or if I get a second car(lower - convertible for summer).

    Thanks in advance.

I tried to offer the information you are requesting before, only to have a Moderator delete my post, lol.

You can contact me directly through here....check my profile, and I will be happy to tell you of my experiences with all types of extended warranties. I use Warranty Direct, check out the power-wrap + one. ;)

I have a TCH and I am thinking of getting an extended warrantee because I drive 30k miles a year, too, and so my standard warrantee will be gone in a little over a year. If I get a 6 yr 100k mile platinum, I will get about 2 extra years out of the warrantee. Seems like it might be worth the price just because of the cost of anything going wrong. Pretty much anything major is a grand. A transmission is many thousands... Having had 2 transmissions go bad in my first 2007 Camry (XLE) I have seriously thought about the extended warrantee.

I would never buy Toyota's. Too much dealer mark-up, no matter if they tell you they are selling it at their cost.

But I would buy a third part one that wrapped-around Toyota's longer powertrain warranty, for all the high tech and emissions stuff. You can get one like that and it will give you coverage out to 6 or 7 years, and 125,000 miles.

And contrary to what some people think, it is always cheaper to buy such a warranty in the first month than later, no matter that the original warranty has years to go. ;)

A previous post mentioned an article avbout how many of these warranty companies go out of business. Something like the top 10 of 10 years ago are no longer in business. They are paper companies and giving them $600 rather than Toyota $1000 may not be all that great of a financial benefit 4 years into a 7 yr/100,000 warranty.

Southeast Toyota dealers apparently have to use warrantees written by Fidelity Warantee Services, and I saw some reports of unhappy customers. I bought their warrantee from my dealer at first before really shopping and got my money back after looking into it. It was more than $1250 for the 7 year/100k platinum warrantee, which had a $50 deductible, and was one of the ones if you don't use it you get a refund.
  • terry92270terry92270 Member Posts: 1,247
There are several companies out there, all highly rated by A. M. Best Company, who have been in business a decade or more. Check on the Edmunds site, one or two advertise there.

The one I bought on my Murano offered true bumper to bumper coverage for 7 years or 125,000 miles, and wrapped around the extended powertrain warranty of Toyota. I paid about $1200 for it, with a $50 deductible. The price doesn't bother me as I have always gotten it back on re-sell, as people prefer, and have more confidence buying, when you have one. All reputable companies allow you to transfer it to a new owner.

A third-party extended warranty doesn't make any difference at the dealer. They pay for covered repairs via a national MasterCard account. And you can have the repairs done at any authorized shop in the nation, not just a Toyota dealer. ;)

What city is this KANSAS SUPERSTORE located in. I'm in the kansas city area and never heard of it around here.? I purchased my 7/100,000 zero deduct for what was supposed to be "dealers cost" of $890. at Superior Toyota in Merriam, KS where I bought the car. But by buying instate, I had to pay sales tax. ~$70
  • flopshotflopshot Member Posts: 14
It is actually Midwest Toyota Superstore, in Kansas. They seem to have the best prices for both the Toyota extended warranty and also the pre-paid maintenance plans.
  • terry92270terry92270 Member Posts: 1,247
Buying anything in-house, especially pre-paid oil changes, is always a suckers bet.
  • flopshotflopshot Member Posts: 14
Two weeks ago, I would have agreed with you, because the price my dealer quoted for the 4yr/55k was ridiculous. But then I saw the price from Midwest was $875, and I did some online research about a la carte service prices. So at that $875 cost, if you figure the three major services are going to be at least $150 each (my buddy's AcuraTL 15k service was $260!), that means you are paying for 11 oil changes @ $38. Yes, I know you can get cheaper oil changes from local mechanics (I pay my local guy $14 to do my other car), but even Jiffy Lebe charged me $40 for my Cadillac and those "outside" services won't be guaranteed by Toyota. So now if I ever have something fail and I want it covered under warranty, they can't say it was due to improper maintenance instead of manufacturer's fault. A couple of extra hundred dollars for the peace of mind is well worth it IMHO.

What does your warranty cover. I just picked up my tch and my dealer was trying to sell me a warranty that ranges from 1500 dollars down to 580 dollars which really didn't cover that much but gave you a discount on oil changes
  • terry92270terry92270 Member Posts: 1,247
Buy a warranty that lists only what it will not cover, rather than what it will.

Warranties written to show what they will cover are always, in my experience, far less inclusive than those who do not. It is also wise to purchase one that does not require you to bring it to a specific dealer, or even only to a Toyota dealer, as opposed to one that allows any authorized repair facility to do the work.

Many extended warranties can save you money by "wrapping around" the already longer mechanical warranty from Toyota, and only extends the normal bumper to bumper to match the powertrain/mechanical one. ;)

I'm completing our purchase of a TCH and am debating whether to get the "Prepaid Maintenance Program". Although I recognize that dealers add in their markup to the price, is there something that they offer that can't be obtained from a non-hybrid service station/mechanic? Can anyone provide the "Major Maintenance" at 15, 30, and 45 K miles or is there something tricky about the hybrid that requires a hybrid "expert"? I live in the Boston area and prices for all auto services are high. Thank you Click and Clack (just kidding).

After 30 years of replacing my own, my wifes, and my daughters oil filters, I am finding it not worth my time to do it myself... so for someone like my self... if the price is better then the near-by Walmart or oil change place, the prepay oil changes may be a good bet.
Also for all those women and men who can't or don't want to ...it may also be a good bet.
...but most of all one would expect a Toyota dealer would do a good job with the right oil and filters.

Gampa, you are indeed moving kinda slow, eh? My post was last August! :P

I agree with you. We were talking simply price, which most using this forum do. :)
  • wvgasguywvgasguy Member Posts: 1,405
My biggest complaint with Toyota is that I have to schedule the oil change and then it seems to always take at least an hour, sometimes longer.

It has been a lot easier in the past to go to a drivethru at my convenience but I have a "tires for life" deal with my dealership as long as I have them do my service.

I'm still debating if it's worth the trouble.
  • terry92270terry92270 Member Posts: 1,247
    LOL :P

That was why I stopped taking those deals. I started thinking how "free" was it, if they kept me waiting in that crappy waiting room for over an hour.... ;)
  • bobelizbobeliz Member Posts: 2
My sales guy had a good suggestion. He said the most important aspect of the oil change was the "Toyota" oil filter. Buy the Toyota filters and take your car to the instant oil change of your choice, but hand them a genuine Toyota filter to put on instead of the cheapy one they use.
  • terry92270terry92270 Member Posts: 1,247
All those oil filters, Toyota ones, Nissan ones, the only thing "different" on them is the name screened on the side.

Fraham, etc., just as good, certainly no worse.
  • wvgasguywvgasguy Member Posts: 1,405
I've seen threads on here and GreenHybrid with a lot of facts about oil filters. Not really so sure that the "Toyota" oil filter is of all that much importance. There are probably some great ones out there that a person should buy and use exclusively. However I'm not one to worry about my filter and "regular" oil as long as I'm doing 5000 mile changes and not running my car hard.

Regarding warranty, I just purchased a platinum 7 yr 75000 mile warranty zero deductable for 520 dollars. It is a Toyota warranty from Midwest Super store in Ks. 1-800- 530-5789. Delt with Keith Zwickl, no hassle or problems. Honored at any toyota dealer in the US.
  • wareshousewareshouse Member Posts: 1
Wondered if anyone has cancelled their extended warranty within the 30 days and tried to buy another one? I paid way too much at the dealer and now want to swap it out for one of the deals mentioned here. Somehow I missed this site before I bought my car.

My concern is if Toyota will see that you cancelled the warranty and won't let you then turned around and buy it again a month later.
  • heathinsdheathinsd Member Posts: 24
    Hi,

I was wondering if you've had luck purchasing another extended warranty. I'm in the same position. I purchased my car and paid out the nose for the extended warranty from the dealer. A few days later, I canceled the warranty in hope of buying one from somewhere else cheaper.

Have you been successful in doing this by chance?

    Thanks!
    Heath

I bought a platinum 7/75 yesterday from Midwest Auto Sales, Hutchinson, KS, 800 530 5789 on my TCH but the price was 645 not 520. Midwest said the difference was the hybrid model.
my local dealer wanted 1650. Midwest said I would get official papers from Toyota direct 2 or 3 weeks in the meantime they would mail me a receipt from the charge on my credit card. The folks at Midwest were very helpful

I'm purchasing a TCH in the Southeast and have been offered an extended warranty from Fidelity Warantee Services.

Is the warranty offered via dealerships in other areas of the US from a different Toyota-affiliated insurer?

    Thanks for your help!
  • wvgasguywvgasguy Member Posts: 1,405
There is one Toyota based warranty and many other companies out there being pushed by various dealers.

    Hi,

Would you post the result of your extended warranty purchase please?

Is it from Totyta and any issue with it.

    Thanks
  • brownie3brownie3 Member Posts: 5
I don't know for sure it is rock bottom but the price is fair. My local dealer wanted $1600 MIDWEST TOYOTA SALES sold me 7/75 no deduct for $645. They put it on my credit card and then in about 3 weeks I got the warranty from Toyota Financial Services. MIdwest PH 800 530 5789 in Hutchinson, KS Other Phone 620 662 6631. I was needless to say very pleased with Midwest.

Holy macaroni, did I get swindled! Picked up my new car 3 days ago in the midst of a marathon work session, so the dust is just now settling from the whole ordeal. I paid $2495 for the extended warranty, and am going to cancel it in the morning (back of contract says I have 10 days to cancel & get full refund), remove the "kick me" sign from my back, and call around for other prices. Think I'm also going to try to cancel the $299 tire warranty thingamajig. Almost afrad to ask about Lojack - paid $1295. Do I have a "kick me" sign on my forehead, too? :)
  • regal1945regal1945 Member Posts: 25
No macaroni! only on your $#%. we as stealers love folks like you, spend it as you cannot take it to the coffin lol. Hey we got a 4x4 TCH for sale are you game? ;)
  • jklcswjklcsw Member Posts: 5
ah haaa haaa - I like to think of it as doing my part to stimulate the economy. I'm reminded again of what I hate about buying a new car, though I plan to keep this one till I hit the coffin, if I can. Will let you know if I need the 4 x 4. ;)

    Thanks for your thoughts, though!

So here's what I was offered by a couple of dealers in the neighborhood. I am in the NJ/Pa area.

Dealer A: $680 for 5/60K platinum, 0 deductible. Pricey...yes but it comes with a money back guarantee. That is should there be No warranty claim on the car for the warranty period, I would get all $680 back. Supposedly, they have a certificate with the dealer stamp. This sounds like a great deal to me, but is this a scam? Anyone else with such an offer?

Dealer B: Prepaid premium maintenance service is $1075 for 4/55K which covers both 5000 mile oil changes and the 15,30,45 K service. According to the dealer, the 15,45K service will cost $199 currently and the 30K will cost $399.
What are people really paying for the big maintenance? Are these realistic numbers?

    Thanks!
  • lzclzc Member Posts: 483
First, dealers push extended warranties for one reason, they are high profit items.

A: What's covered? The car comes with a 3/36K general warranty and 5/60K powertrain coverage already (with hybrid components covered longer).

Yep, between years 3 & 4 something not covered might go wrong, but it's unlikely to be anything major, since most major stuff is still covered. And if it's something small, you then have a choice to file a claim and forfeit the refund, or pay up. If you get your money back, their profit comes from having use of your money for 5 years.

No scam here, but are you being protected against what you presumably fear, a large repair bill? I don't see it.

B: I would review the TCH's recommended service schedule. There are no big maintenance items at 15-30-45K. Other than changing the cabin and engine air filter at 30K, all the services are little more than an oil change and tire rotation. My dealer charges $28 for an oil change. I'll do the tire rotation every other oil change.
  • wvgasguywvgasguy Member Posts: 1,405
I can possibly see a 100K mile warranty, but 60K??? As for this one what if you have a $50 claim, would you get the rest back? If so, and you trust them then all you lose is the interest you'd earn on the $680 over 60K or 5 years (60K for me is only two years)

I've seen some pay 1000+ for this but I thought it was for a much longer period. My 15K and 30K services did not cost $199.
