    Depends on the model year.

The original RAV4 had a permanent AWD system. I believe the 2nd gen kept the same system.

The new RAV4s use a system that is similar in operation to the CR-V. It is 100% FWD until there is slippage.

However, it is different in how it makes things happen. Honda uses the dual pump system mentioned above. I believe Toyota uses electronic sensors to detect slippage and engage the unit. This is probably similar to the device used by Ford and Mazda for the Escape/Tribure twins. Toyota also has a locking mechanism which allows you to lock the AWD, but this cannot be used on dry pavement and probably not above a certain speed. Honestly, I'm fuzzy on the details with this one.

Here's a fair primer on the subject. Edmunds also has a Toyota 4X4 Systems Explained thread if you're interested in the RAV4, specifically.

IN FRONT OF YOUR LEFT KNEE is a great space. I put toll money there and it's swell. Just got a EX-L NAV on 12/30 and am looking for spaces I am used to having in my '98 Accord.

yeah, that's where i've ended up putting my change as well. i hate that i have to pull out a handful of change in order to pick out what i need and then put the rest back instead of simply opening a little drawer and just taking out what i need. oh well, life is full of compromises :)

I've put an Altoid tin in that little cubby to hold my spare change. It makes it much easier to pick out individual coins, without having several of them end up on the floor mat.
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
Do they jiggle around and make noise, though?

Maybe line the tin with some lining? :D

I like to put change in one of those plastic film cannisters. However, now that everyone is using digital cams....

How about Prescription bottles. Pharmacist would probably give ya a few! Might even be able to size them for quarters, dimes and such. :)

Or just go to Pep Boys, and buy a spring loaded change holder

Just wait a few years and you'll start collecting your own supply. :P

I bet it won't be that much longer until everything from parking meters on up will just run off debit/credit cards anyway.
  • bodble2bodble2 Member Posts: 4,514
Well, actually, in Vancouver here, all the street meters, and some private lots, are payable by phone. You call a # on your cell phone, specify how much time you need, and when time is almost up, a text message is sent to your phone to remind you to buy more time.
  • kiawahkiawah Member Posts: 3,666
    Now THAT is really convenient.

Problem is though, it could easily also text message to the friendly meter maid......run over there to slot #23, has an expired meter that you can ticket!

I can see some fairly cruel pranks developing with this... :surprise:

Did anyone try to install Arm Rest with Storage
    from 06 CRV?

    Any thoughts? Any Honda mechanics?
  • varmintvarmint Member Posts: 6,326
I know people who did it with a 2002 model. It can be done as a DIY project.

I experienced the exact same windshield distortion problem. I finally had to sell the vehicle at a substantial loss because it was making me nauseous to drive for more than a few miles. Honda claimed the distortion fell within their production allowances and that replacing the windshield would not correct the "problem." I believe it is most noticeable for tall drivers due to the viewing angle/eye level. We should talk. I think it is a bad windshield design and should be recalled before it causes someone to have an accident. I suggest you call customer care and get assigned a case number and then document your problem in writing and send a letter to Honda referencing your case number.

Installing is not the problem as long as hardware are matching. Seems like the same piece sold for Element also.

We are about to bite the bullet and ORDER a 2007 CR-V (EL, 2FWD). I am wondering about tires. The salesman can't confirm exactly what brand that it will have. I will seriously consider swapping them out before I take delivery. I would appreciate knowing the brands of tires on the EX models of other owners out there. Has anyone else swapped theirs out? How do they ride / handle? Thanks in advance! :confuse:
  • snoopy21snoopy21 Member Posts: 114
my EX-L came with bridgestone dueler H/T 470 tires in 225-65/17. no complaints. overall, the ride is much quieter than in our odyssey with michelin hydroedges but i think that has a lot more to do with the vehicle itself than with the tires.
  • crvme3crvme3 Member Posts: 140
We have had our '07 CRV EX-L for about a month. It came with Bridgestone Dueler H/T's as O.E. equipment. I have seen many with Continentals as well, just depends on what is on hand that day of assembly when the tires go on. I find these Bridgestones to be typical of an O.E. tire, not terrible but not the greatest either... I find on certain freeways (the ones with rain grooves) that the car wants to wander & hunt all over the lanes.

I just got my new CRV and I plug in the ipod to the aux jack and the audio only comes out on the left side of the car speakers. is my cord broken or is something else wrong?
  • c_hunterc_hunter Member Posts: 4,487
Are you sure you are using a stereo cable? If you are using a mono cable then you are grounding the right channel and will only hear the left.

Here is what the plugs look like -- stereo on the top, mono on the bottom:

    wikipedia

If it is a stereo cable, then try wiggling both ends to see if it is shorted or worn out.
  • thomasfthomasf Member Posts: 10
yep, it's a mono cable. so I guess I need to get a stereo cable like the one on top in the picture?
  • c_hunterc_hunter Member Posts: 4,487
Yeah, that will solve the problem! They are usually $5-6.

If you have an iPod with a dock connector, this is an even better option:

    http://www.cablestogo.com/product.asp?cat%5Fid=2033&sku=35508

This gives you a cleaner and higher level audio signal than what you get out of the headphone jack on the iPod.
  • thomasfthomasf Member Posts: 10
the cable works. thanks for your help!
  • snoopy21snoopy21 Member Posts: 114
nice! but, i just have the regular $5 6-foot stereo cable from radio shack. i actually prefer it because we use the fader to route all the sound to the back and then my kids can control their music selection AND volume from the backseat on their ipod.

Craig gets a gold star for the day.

That's a great idea, and a good reason to use the headphone output instead.

Got CR-V EX 2WD a week ago. In moving and stacking 2nd row of seats...found a piece of carpeting cut as a flap secured with velcro where seat had been. Dealer suggests not an aberration, but intended to ease access to fuel tank. Not consistent with an otherwise well finished vehicle. At the moment playing phone tag with American Honda.
Also, seeking best deal for extended Honda Care warranty having read somewhere that the warranty had to be purchased from a Florida /place of purchase/ dealer.
Your kind thoughts and suggestions are appreciated.
  • c_hunterc_hunter Member Posts: 4,487
Yeah, it's normal -- I noticed this when looking at the CR-V a few months ago. I wouldn't worry about it; I have seen similar arrangements on other vehicles.
  • mnfmnf Member Posts: 405
Correct if you go to on line dealer sites you will get this kind of message its Florida thing.

    Good Luck

It really doesn't make any sense for me.. If the windshield is the problem and Honda doesn't replace it. Why don't you get an aftermarket replacement? I replace my Accord windshield for less than 200 dollars (including labor) becuase it has a stone chip and start cracking. Can't see why you have to sell your car to fix the problem...

I have a 2007 crv w/navi. In the owners manual for navi on pg 130 & 131 it talks about being able to do climate control with the voice. I can't get it to work. Have you have any success? Thanks for any info!!!
  • c_hunterc_hunter Member Posts: 4,487
What type of functions does it claim to support? I cannot see how fan speed or temp would be controlled, as they have fixed position knobs. For that matter, no aspect of the climate control system is automated or computer controlled, so I don't see how Nav could even interface with it. Maybe they are talking about a future model that has auto climate control?

Anyone have the rear spoiler installed (by honda or yourself) How does it look. I've seen the photos Honda provides on their site, but I'd like to know how it looks from different angles
  • clipper147clipper147 Member Posts: 3
Had dealer install spoiler /silver/ on recently purchased CRV-EX. Think that it enhances the appearance of the vehicle and may be functional as an air foil deflecting some of the road grime from the rear window.
  • kipkkipk Member Posts: 1,576
It could also help to break up the vacuum behind the car, resulting in a bit better milesge on the road.

    I agree.
  • c_hunterc_hunter Member Posts: 4,487
It's likely just cosmetic, though you could do a before/after coast down test on the highway to see if it has any drag benefit. Given the basic draggy shape of the CR-V, the benefit would probably be small if there was one. Some cars do better with a spoiler, some worse.

Seemed to be getting a decent amount of attention.

I like the shelf in the back, but I almost wish it could be set higher, to act as a cargo cover. It sets a bit low to cover much.

Neat how it sits in the floor, though. Honda took Chevy's idea from the Equinox and simply executed it better.

I tried this option to no avail. Aftermarket windshields are made to the same standards as factory/Honda windshields minus the logo. The windshield glass is not technically defective. The design (shape) of the windshield includes an optical distortion when viewed from a high angle/eye level (i.e., by tall drivers). According to Honda this distortion falls within their production allowances.
  • susanr1susanr1 Member Posts: 4
It is actually in the 2007 owners manual for navigation. I called the Honda Co (800 number) and they told me if it is in the book then I must have it. Anybody else try it yet?
  • c_hunterc_hunter Member Posts: 4,487
What voice commands are supposed to be supported for climate control?
  • drive62drive62 Member Posts: 637
Despite some predictions to the contrary, the new CR-V seems to be selling very well. I guess the "hideous" front end treatment is a non issue.

Last month Honda sold 14,390 CR-Vs - an all-time high. By contrast Toyota "only" sold 11,925 RAVs.

In January 2006 the numbers were 9,325 CR-Vs and 9,382 RAVs sold.
  • blufz1blufz1 Member Posts: 2,045
The Rav looks old compared to the CRV.
  • susanr1susanr1 Member Posts: 4
The climate control and temperature voice commands include: Climate control full automatic, Climate control defrost on, Rear defrost off, Fan speed up, Temperature dual mode on; Driver temperature down. There are several more but these are some of the ones given on page 130/131 of the navi manual with my 2007 CR-V.
  • c_hunterc_hunter Member Posts: 4,487
The CR-V doesn't have dual zone climate control, or an automatic mode, so I can't see how these commands would even work. Other Honda models do support these features, however (for instance Accord with Nav). Is the Nav manual specific to the CR-V, or is it a generic Honda Nav manual? If it's a CR-V specific Nav manual, then it sounds like they have a few typos to fix! Perhaps a future model year will bring these features to the CR-V.

Why not just run it by the dealer and let the salesperson show you the operation? :confuse:

Speaking of that, I just sent my dealer an e-mail with a question, but perhaps someone here knows the answer. The owner's manual says that I should detach the xm radio / navi. atenna before going through a car wash. Does anyone know how to do that?
