Hi: I just started the negotiation of an AUDI Q5 that has an MRSP of $52,975. The initial offer they made was in my opinion, extremely strong (PP = $47,300 - $1,000 rebate). Perhaps b/c of my credit score (825) and their inventory (over 80 on the lot).

I initially told the salesperson I'm interested in either a cash purchase OR lease (36/12) with 0% down. I was told residual value (52%) and MF (.00063) I have several questions:

    1) what # is the sales tax (NJ) based on/calculated? The agreed upon purchase price? The PP - the rebate? or the depreciation value ($22,700) that the monthly payment is calculated?
    - The dealer quoted me sales tax based on the PP, before $1000 rebate. Why would I pay sales tax on PP that includes the residual value if I don't buy the car after 3 years?

    2) the salesperson was adamant about a 39 month lease, rather than a 36 month lease? Not sure why I feel like I'm being duped....is there a catch?

    3) Does NJ require sales tax on a lease to be paid up front?

    Thanks

I confirm the .00063 and 52% numbers that you've been given.

    To answer your questions:
    1. Sales tax is calculated against the sum of the payments, plus any incentives and taxable fees
    2. 39 month lease term has a 2% lower residual, and may give you a slightly lower payment. But, if you want 36 months, stand your ground. You control the conversation about what you want
    3. No, you can add it to the cap cost and make it part of the monthly payment. Which is our recommendation.

Good stuff! Thanks for your comment. Lastly,

    1) We were told by two salesman, from two different dealerships, that Audi is coming up with a promotion starting in July and that it may pay to wait. After receiving offer yesterday, from "another" salesman, I did mention the July Audi promotion. He was unsure IF Audi would be offering a promotion and of course wanted me to sign. Any thoughts?

    2) what would be the "additional" negotiable fees (and approximate $) that I may expect a dealer to include at signing

    3) what would be the "additional" non-negotiable fees (and approximate $) that I should expect at signing?

    1) No idea about future promotions
    2) Negotiable? Negotiating fees is an exercise in frustration. Ask for all fees before negotiating the price, then negotiate a price that accounts for the extra charges that you then know are coming.
    3) In NJ, expect a dealer fee ($400-$600), DMV fees (approx $400), and an $895 acquisition fee (from Audi)
