We purchased a RAV4 XLE 4dr AWD, MSRP=31885(includes destination)
price paid: 26385
doc: 649
tax: 1892.36
OTD: 28926.38
Date: 06/29/2019
Location: Raleigh, NC

NOTES: We cosigned loan for my nephew, got 4.09APR for 75 months with $0 down. We made him get GAP insurance (almost $1000). I advised against anything else, but he purchased extended warranty and service package. But they did come down $1500 on these three bundle together so I guess it wasn't a total soaking. The dealership in Durham was going to match OTD price. Two other dealerships in Raleigh would not come down to this price. However, one was pretty close. My nephew lives in North Platte NE. We drove the car back 1600 miles in 33 hours non-stop (well, a couple of stops, but no overnight)

Helped my fiance this past weekend to secure a purchase of a silver Toyota 2016 RAV4 XL AWD, with one previous owner, a leased vehicle, clean title history, 43k miles. Original dealer offer was already listed as exceptional at $19.5k. Had this reduced $500 for 50% use of front tires that I noticed. Initially sales manager said 'no price reduction' but we 'walked' and kept looking. Saleswoman then called us back the next day and accepted my request for $500 price reduction, so we proceeded with purchase.

I got a copy of dealer's inspection records and everything checked out in the 'green' aside from the tires, that were listed in the 'yellow zone' by the Hyundai dealership that sold us the vehicle. During purchase my fiance refused all extended warranty offers so currently there is no warranty on this vehicle (aside from what I presume is a transferable original power train warranty of 100K from Toyota.) The dealer offered my fiance a 6 yr. 'bumper to bumper' warranty for $2,600 including 1 yr. of 100% free maintenance.

What is the wisest thing to do regarding whether to get or not get any kind of warranty for this vehicle? Is it best simply to 'do regular maintenance' and 'repair as needed' and not get a warranty? Is getting some kind of warranty best? My thought was to get the next regular servicing at a Toyota dealership and also request athorough inspection to assure everything in this vehicle is 'up to snuff' as well as do what is necessary for the 45k mile servicing.

Please share your opinions on both the warranty and whether it makes sense to have a Toyota dealership conduct a thorough inspection in addition to 45k servicing? (The Hyundai finance guy said newer Toyotas have a lot of computerized parts that are expensive to replace as is the labor for these. Thanks for your guidance!

It's a Toyota - didn't you select it because of its reputation?

Self insure - take the $2600 you would have spent on the warranty and put it into a separate account. Use it when necessary. I'll bet you won't touch much, if any, of it, if you keep up with the maintenance.
