I'd appreciate some help on this lease I'm close to finalizing. Below are the fees the salesman is telling me I have to pay for a 2020 Mazda 6 Grand Touring Reserve at 12k/36 in San Diego.

Acquisition fee-650, doc fee-85, Cap fees-466.75, Cap tax-307.22

I have no problem with acquisition fee and doc fee but what are cap fees and cap tax?

Tax would be on the acquisition fee, the incentives and any money you are putting down.

I also asked about the "cap tax" and he said that's a tax he can't change. I realize there are taxes but $307.22 seems high compared to my previous leases.

Signing fees = $1508.97 ($650 acquisition fee + $85 doc fee + $466.75 cap fees + $307.22 cap tax)
No mention of the first month's payment and when I asked about that, he didn't really answer. Instead he said "I can give you a complete breakdown once you are in store". We've been doing everything through email up to this point.

I've asked the salesman to not bundle any of these signing fees into the lease since I definitely don't want to pay interest on them.

I'd really appreciate your help in understanding how the "cap fees" and "cap tax" are calculated assuming they're legit.

Also do you know why the first month's payment wouldn't be needed at signing?

If you don't make the first payment, it gets rolled into the cap cost.

CA taxes the incentives, any down payment and the taxable fees (acquisition fee, for example). At an (estimated) 8% tax rate, that would have to be about $3800 worth of taxable items. I can't get there from here.

I dunno - I get a funny feeling about the answers you're getting.

Might be time to shop another dealer.

$3315 subject to upfront tax (cap tax)
If your sales tax rate is 9.25%, then the CAP tax seems correct.

You list the $1508 as signing fees. It's possible that the Due at Signing is $1508 + 1st payment.
Or, it's possible that Mazda has an incentive to cover the first payment.

Easy question for the F&I guy.

Also, do either of you have an explanation for what "cap fees" are and why they are so high? Assuming those are DMV fees, then the total should be closer to $300 based on my previous leases, not $466.75.

DMV fees in CA are about 1.1% of MSRP.

If they refuse to be transparent with the numbers, why are you still engaging with them?

The F&I person calculates the sales tax, and they won't try to pad the price, there. I'm sure they can show you the exact figures. And, it's more likely they use the sales tax rate where you are registering the car, not their location.

Actually, in CA, sales tax is based on the dealer location. Cities compete fiercely to have auto malls set up,shop in their city limits.
