I just purchased a 2009 Honda pilot (Touring) I recieved 1,700.00 off. I was up side down on a suburban and wanted to dump it for something more gas efficient and a little smaller. To help with the deal they gave me the 1,700. Otherwise they would not have come off any.

I am debating on either biting the bullet n going for the exl 09, or save and stick w/ the exl 08. I am just afraid I'd regret not going for the new model time down the line.
What's the price difference anyway??I'd appreciate any imput. Thanks
This is a great forum by the way ;-]

I would encourage people who bought '09 Pilot to share their deals in term of relative differences to INVOICE or MSRP so that others can get a feel of what price point to start negotiating with dealers. Please also name the area, as a reference.
Now we have $1700 off MSRP from 'hrn'.
    More ???
I bet within a few weeks when supply ramps up, the price will drop very quickly to
    INVOICE+$500.

P.S. debbie, I don't know how you got "bad deal" for CX-9. Everyone else is getting INVOICE-$1500. Check out the CX-9 forum.

If money is not a problem, go for 09.
If want to save a bunch, go for 08.

What is the invoice on both the 08 and 09 EXL's?
I understand the 08's are selling for as low as 26k,
but does that include the 3500/2500 incentives?
    How much off the invoice??
Will I still get the 2.9% apr w/ the cash incentive?
What is the invoice on the 09?
I truly appreciate your comments ;-] :shades:
  • bigdadi118bigdadi118 Member Posts: 1,207
Forget above invoice, because 08 is lower than invoice and currently they won't sell 09 EXL at invoice.

You can get 08 EXL in $25-26K, while prepare to pay MSRP or markup above MARP on 09 EXL.

I test drove an 09 Touring 4 wheel drive with RES yesterday in silver. It had everything you could ask for. But also at a whopping $5995 above invoice!! In the Tampa Florida area. We also drove the Acadia, Enclave and the CX9. My wife liked the CX9. I on the other hand thought it seemed kind of tight, with the low roof line. Having had several Honda vehicles in the past, I am skeptical to buy anything else! I like the pilot, but not for this price. Having bought a few new 1st model vehicles before (most recently 07 si sedan) and not paid above sticker. I want to hear if anyone else has experieced any luck on getting sticker or below.

I was looking to purchase an '09 EX-L this weekend. While I didn't close the deal, the dealer in central Virginia was willing to give me MSRP less a "couple hundred" dollars off. I walked away, because I thought I would wait a few months for pricing to go below sticker.
  • microjoezmicrojoez Member Posts: 6
I just closed the deal on the '09 Pilot 4WD Touring with RES for $38,400 + taxes and fees (doc. and plates)- comes out to ~$41,300. MSRP was $40,630. If "waseem_marie" is correct about the 37,600 invoice price, the dealers (in CT) are willing to seel them for ~ 800 over invoice. I saved > $2200 off MSRP. I couldn't justify spending list on a Honda or any car for that matter. I think the dealers realize if they don't come down from list price quick they will lose customers to Toyota -- the Highlander has all the same bells and whistles (can easily get one for $38,000 loaded). That was my next stop if the price wasn't right for the Pilot!!

I've been thinking of a blue leather interior. Is the blueness of it like the one in the prototype? I have yet to find a blue leather here in our area - florida panhandle.

Nice job! Thanks for some ammo as head in later this afternoon. What did the have on the window sticker when you walked in?

I think you guys are nuts for buying this truck now. look at the releases from GM, ford and stock news in general. Sales down especially on gas guzzlers no recovery in sight through 2009. If your like me and don't have an extra 2000-4000 to burn, then wait for winter and get one at invoice.

Check aften on Honda.com site > Current Offer
Honda now offers 09 Pilot --- 4 trims in leasing, net cap-cost are about $2,500 off MSRP
LX, EX (2WD, 4WD), .... nothing yet on EXL, Touring
  • marakeshmarakesh Member Posts: 5
I am offered an exl 08 for 26,500. Will I still be able to use the 2500/3500 incentive?? and the 2.9% apr? Should I mention my trade in now, or after the final price??
    Thanks a bunch :confuse:

I didn't price the 08'. The 09' I got had a MSRP of $40,000 something. They then added the $1,700 dollar mark up on top of the MSRP. They quickly took it off to help me out. Yes, you get the 2.9% for up to 60 months. Longer was around 6.4%. There are no rebates on the 09'. My 09' was the Touring. There is not an option that it doesn't have. I just saw another 09' at my dealership yesterday and the MSRP was $32,000. Don't know what model it actually was because someone bought it as soon as they got it in.
09' has it all over the 08'. It comes down to money, the 09' will cost more.

The 09 Touring model w/ Nav & Rear DVD I looked at just came off the lift from being prepped (not the one I bought it was the wrong color). It was fully loaded from the manufacturer -- no after market stuff (running boards, chrome accents, remote starter, etc.--if I want that I will put it on myself for 1/2 the cost later) Sticker price was 39,995 plus 636 dest. charge of $635 total = $40,630. Got mine for $38,400 no dest. charge (they just absorbed that cost). Good luck later.
  • raf139raf139 Member Posts: 15
What part of the country? $38,400 not including tax, tags and whatever else. Right?
  • microjoezmicrojoez Member Posts: 6
I understand your hesitation -- not surprised by the news from GM and Ford, gas guzzling american SUV's just can't compete and the american hybrid SUV's that get better gas mileage are expensive once you add all the accessories and simply are unreliable and not worth the extra up front cost). If I am going to spend 30 - 40K on a 3 row seat SUV, which is necessary with a family, (unless I get a minivan, which by the way, does not get any better mileage than the Honda Pilot @ average 18 mpg) Honda and Toyota are in a league of their own.
I want it to be worth something in 5 - 7 years if and when I go to resell it.
By the way, Honda (at least by me) is now offering 4yr/48,000 bumper-bumper warranty--another selling point.
$ 800 over invoice is more than acceptable for me.

Northeast (CT): $38,400 car price, plus $2,304 tax, $173 for tags, $399 for Doc. = $41,277 out the door.

They didnt have a Touring available so I drove and EX-L.

It feels much bigger and more masculine than my wifes 2007 Pilot- I like that. I am 6 foot and there is plenty of room for me to adjust the seat so that my head isn't hitting the ceiling- something that annoyed me when I drove the Sequoia. The drivers seat felt much roomier for some reason and my wife commented that the center console was much larger than hers. Very easy to get comfortable in and a very smooth ride compared to the 2007.

I told them that I liked it but wouldn't be buying until the price dropped down closer to invoice (internet sales person). She said right now they are doing $1500 over invoice but that could change depending on the economy and demand. I really love my current car so I can afford to be patient- I'll see where they are at in a month or so.

I saw in person. Both inside and out are not that ugly, but not pretty also. The grill do help me to recall the "Transformers". Interior is full of functionality, though. Too bad that CX-9 has no Honda's badge. Or it should sell like fly.

Seems like the Honda designer have something to say (about controversial design) -

Does anyone know the invoice on the 09 exl? My wife and I just got back from testing one. The dealer said he'll go $500 below msrp which is 35,895. He also said the apr will not be lower than 6.p%. We saw a white one w/ blue leather interior. The front and back are honda like but bulkier, better than the 08, in our opinion. But the side looks like an al American jeep for say. Overall we like the EXL but we don't like the price. Ttyl ;)

Edmunds just has 2008 prices up still.

If they are at the dealers already, it shouldn't be too much longer before the '09 invoice info gets out there.

What has this Honda guy been sniffing? The Pilot is UGLY! It's big and huge inside and out at a time when curves and crossovers are in fashion! We waited months for it and when we saw photos at the car show we still waited again months to see it in person - AWFUL! And which moron decided you could only get the navi on the touring level and it would no longer be available on the EX-L???? Oh yeah - at the touring price point I would have bought an MDX. I got the last 2008 at my dealer - done! Honda forgot about their main customer base - families who aren't driving $40,000 vehicles!

Could not disagree more. I hate all the curvy SUV's, want something that looks like a truck. I was going to buy a Pathfinder but now am very interested in 09 Pilot. Beauty is in the eye....

BTW - Couldn't agree more on the NAV issue. When will manufacturers begin including this as an option on mid-level trims???

Anyone know what the release date for the 2009 Pilot in Canada is?
  • nfusion770nfusion770 Member Posts: 6
I agree- I hate the look of most crossovers. My wife and I both liked how truck-like the new Pilot was. I am not sure if I really like the new grill, but I think it looks better in person than it does in images.
  • nheindlnheindl Member Posts: 2
Except that the MDX has worse gas mileage and less interior room.
  • debbievalgdebbievalg Member Posts: 5
I just realized the other day in traffic that the new Pilot has the IDENTICAL front end of the Honda Ridgeline - like they didn't spend 5 minutes or $5 on real design or they would have made it aerodynamic and newer looking like a larger CRV! My other thought was how's the transmission on that new larger, heavier Pilot working with the same engine of the lighter, smaller Pilot!
  • cericceric Member Posts: 1,092
    > My other thought was how's the transmission on that new larger, heavier Pilot working with the same engine of the lighter, smaller Pilot! <

Transmission is usually rated by how much torque it can handle. Usually the margin is very large. Most today's transmission can handle up to 350-400ft-lb of torque. I won't worry about it. The other factor is cooling. When towing, you need more cooling for the fluid (larger transmisson fluid cooler).

The transmission on the new Pilot is basically the same old 5-speed that has been infamous of having problems lubricating some gears. I sold my '01 Odyssey (traded it in for a CX-9) when I detected the 1st sign of transmission problem at 85K miles. It happened in snowy cold weather when the gear became very slow to engage. On warm weather, it didn't happen. When it was newer, it didn't happen either. While I couldn't be sure that it was the transmission problem (early sign) or simply cold transmission fluid, I was not ready to take the risk of an expensive transmission replacement.

Honda really needs a 6-speed transmission to keep up with others. DOHC won't hurt either in place of the SOHC they have been using on V6 engines (cost cutting, I am sure).

My wife and I just test drove the 2009 Honda Pilot EXL 2WD and were really impressed with it. The invoice price is $33,595. MSRP is $34,230.

I went ahead and contacted every Honda Internet dept. in metro Atlanta to get drive out prices. Four places in which I actually spoke with a person gave me $36,800+. Carey Paul Honda gave me a price of $34,724.34 drive out price (tax, tag, title, lemon law included). I had to contact him again to be perfectly sure. Honda Carland was the next dealership I contacted and she thought that price was a rue to get us into the dealership. She contacted me within 10 minutes offering $34,499 drive out price. She is also verifying whether the .9% APR they are offering includes this vehicle. I am still contacting each of the Honda dealerships to see if they can beat it.

what is the tax rate? Inv: $33,595 while you said $34,499 (TTL included) sound good for the 09.

    Great forum!

Sorry for the stupid question. We are looking at a 09 honda pilot touring, and want to research quotes from local internet dealers I'm seeing people post about.

How do I locate them? Thanks!

Does anybody know when we will get a look at all of the invoice prices for the 2009 Pilot? I know its early but I think we will be buying closer to invoice by the end of the summer.

The tax rate is 6% (Gwinnett County Georgia).

The major newspaper out here in Atlanta is the AJC and within it had its AJCCars section with all of the dealerships' numbers around metro ATL. I just called and asked for the internet sales department for new vehicles.

Also, on Honda's website they have a link to find a dealer. It has numbers included. Check it out:

Find a car dealer anywhere ... input a zip code & mile radius, or try the advanced search.

I tried a radius of 75 miles Honda dealers 95828 zip code, returned 30 Honda dealers.

Except money, there is nothing else to talk about ???

This is supposed to be a car talk group, not a financial site ...

Thanks. Do folks just contact them first through the internet? I found phone number for "internet sales" job titles at local dealerships. Is that who I'll talk to after cutting a deal, or is that whom I'll cut a deal with?

Very new to this approach - thanks for your patience and advise.
  • bigdadi118bigdadi118 Member Posts: 1,207
Just email them whatever email addr you can find from their website. usually it is from "CONTACT US".
Don't expect each of them will reply. If it is a form that require you input info like Tel No., in the remark section, tell then "DO NOT CALL" reply in email please. With email reply, you have ample time to list them out. Phone calls are always sales technique that give them advantage & give yourself the pressure. I know some will still call, but I have caller ID to identify junk calls or anyone I know. Even I answer the call by any chance, I will politely tell the sale guy to respond by email, then hang up.

Ask every dealer the same question/quote in a template like email, that is "drive out-of-the-door" price, same trim, same options, and/or colors w/1st & 2nd choice.
Ask them to email breakdown the charges, fees as well. Compare apple to apple.
Make sure mention they're no demo, odometer should be less than 40 miles. Even a swap, they should find the swap nearest that they can locate. Swap fee should be inside the "O-T-D" price. Let them earn your biz.

Well, buying the rig is a big part of car ownership ... but, we do have a Honda Pilot Prices Paid and Buying Experience discussion that's ideal for talking deals and dealers.

Check out Out The Door (OTD) Pricing questions too.
