(CNN) -- A heat wave is building and could reach dangerous levels in parts of the Midwest, the Plains and the Southeast this week.
Fifteen states are under heat advisories, which means temperatures are expected to exceed 105 degrees Fahrenheit.
Kansas City and St. Louis in Missouri are under an excessive heat warning, along with Tulsa, Oklahoma; Memphis, Tennessee; and Evansville, Indiana. In these areas, the heat index, or how hot the body feels due to the combined effects of heat and humidity, will reach between 110 and 115 degrees this week.
The advisories and warnings will remain in effect until at least Tuesday.
Several high-temperature records have been broken recently.
Wichita, Kansas, hit 111 degrees Sunday. The National Weather Service says temperatures of 111 degrees have only occurred there 10 times since July 1888.
Also on Sunday, the temperature in tornado-ravaged Joplin, Missouri, hit 106 degrees, and in Springfield, Missouri, it topped 102 degrees. Both of these temperatures bested high-temperature records set in the 1980s.

The refusal of the global temperatures to rise as predicted has caused much angst among academics. "The fact is that we can't account for the lack of warming at the moment and it is a travesty that we can't," wrote one in 2009. Either the instruments were wrong, or the heat energy had gone missing somewhere.
Now a team of academics, after tweaking a statistical model to include sulphur emissions, suggest that coal power stations may be to blame for a lack of global warming since 1998. The IPCC's 2007 assessment acknowledged the negative radiative forcing (aka, cooling effect) of both natural aerosols from volcanoes and manmade aerosols, but admitted the level of scientific understanding was low.
That's what I'm saying. They just don't know. So trying to tax US to chase a boogie man is crazy. Hear much about climate change legislation lately? They are waiting for a warming trend. The Liberal media (CNN) would like to keep it alive with anecdotal hot spots. That is just not the issue. If Global warming is man made it will not take a vacation when we are continuing to put out more of the GHG they claim is causing the warming. The hockey stick got its tip broke off.
...and won a No-ball Prize to boot :surprise: .
The German government wants to encourage the construction of new coal and gas power plants with millions of euros from a fund for promoting clean energy and combating climate change.
The plan has come under stiff criticism, but the Ministry of Economics and Technology defended the idea. A spokeswoman said it was necessary as the government switches from nuclear to other renewable energy sources and added that the money would promote the most efficient plants possible.
Funding for the initiative is limited to five percent of the energy and climate change fund’s annual expenditure between 2013 and 2016.
Annual funding for the new plants could total more than €160 million per year between 2013 and 2014 alone, the Berliner Zeitung newspaper reported on Wednesday.

The Germans wised up. Wind is not practical and coal and gas from Russia is cheaper..
You REALLY need to get off that kick, amigo. It's SO wrong.
The GE CEO has more horses in this race than we do, and he'e with ME on this one:
http://www.technologyreview.com/blog/energy/26991/
GE Chairman and CEO Jeffrey Immelt is betting that wind power will be able to compete with conventional sources of energy, without government help.
At a company meeting held today at a gas turbine factory in Greenville, South Carolina, Immelt told employees that he's ordered the company to increase production capacity of wind turbines. He said that costs have come down to the point at which the technology will be able to compete in many areas of the world without subsidies. He seemed confident that wind turbine orders will increase, even though the valuable production tax credits, which have driven a boom in wind turbine installation in the United States, are set to expire next year.
Immelt's remarks were made at a two day event meant to highlight GE's emphasis on advanced manufacturing. He noted that all of the massive gas turbines produced at the Greenville facility will be exported out of the United States this year, to places such as India and Saudi Arabia. On the production line was a recently completed steam and gas turbine system destined for Iraq. Earlier this year, GE announced that it would soon introduce a new power plant designed to help buffer variability from wind farms.
Immelt said that in some cases—such as with gas turbines and solar panels—it's vital to co-locate manufacturing with research and development. His company has extensive testing facilities at the Greenville factory, which engineers can use to examine new designs before and after incorporating them into production turbines.
You crack me up. Good for a laugh. Of course Immelt and GE are all for wind. They are bilking the tax payers, that is you and I out of $$$BILLIONS of dollars. All in the name of alternative energy. You need to smell the roses they are selling you. It is stinkweed.
Some places in the World is not in the USA. GE takes OUR tax dollars and builds factories in other countries. They are probably the largest corporate criminals in the world today. At our expense.
I rarely agree with Jon Stewart. On GE I do.
"I Give Up," Stewart tried to poke fun at the argument that corporate tax cuts stimulate the economy. His incivility boiled over when he reported that despite paying no corporate income tax, GE is still slashing American jobs and creating jobs overseas.
http://www.thedailyshow.com/watch/mon-march-28-2011/i-give-up---pay-anything---
The GE CEO said , "WE DON'T NEED NO STINKING SUBSIDIES TO MAKE OUR TURBINE BUSINESS PROFITABLE."
Regardless of what ELSE that GE might do or not do, that statement is a step in the RIGHT DIRECTION for both Wind Power and for GE using less of our tax dollars.
I just do not buy your blind allegiance to anything in the right direction is worth the cost. We cannot even pay our bills at the local state and Federal level. Adding to our deficit for Pie in the Sky alternatives is pure idiocy.
Gas prices will jump $3 and maybe carmakers and the buying public will start using alternatives.
Gary, Gary, Gary.....
Ignoring evidence because it goes against your viewpoint is not a good way to live, Gary.
But an examination of the American tax code indicates that oil production is among the most heavily subsidized businesses, with tax breaks available at virtually every stage of the exploration and extraction process.
According to the most recent study by the Congressional Budget Office, released in 2005, capital investments like oil field leases and drilling equipment are taxed at an effective rate of 9 percent, significantly lower than the overall rate of 25 percent for businesses in general and lower than virtually any other industry.
And for many small and midsize oil companies, the tax on capital investments is so low that it is more than eliminated by various credits. These companies’ returns on those investments are often higher after taxes than before.
“The flow of revenues to oil companies is like the gusher at the bottom of the Gulf of Mexico: heavy and constant,” said Senator Robert Menendez, Democrat of New Jersey, who has worked alongside the Obama administration on a bill that would cut $20 billion in oil industry tax breaks over the next decade. “There is no reason for these corporations to shortchange the American taxpayer.”

Doing a quick check of some of the listed cities, I don't see any of them more than a few degrees above normal. And none close to record setting heat. Either it is a slow day for weather news or the left leaning news media are trying to drum up or renew interest in the now dead AGW cult.
For those in the heat, we are running about 10 degrees below normal and loving it.

Frankly I find it a good reason to not do much, and enjoy a snadwich and beer at the lake. It beats the cold!

"More than 1,000 high-temperature records have been broken this month." (USA Today)
Don't know what that means, but our little air conditioned library was packed yesterday and when we walked to town for lunch, the head cook disappeared into the deep freeze off the back door for ten minutes. It's hot enough that people are actually swimming in Lake Superior (I stuck to wading). :shades:
I keep reading that kind of spin. When I check an individual city they are claiming to be hot, it is right around normal or slightly above for that day. Most well below the record for the day. Chicago is below normal as we speak. So what are they smokin' at USA Today? Weather Underground says it is a lovely 75 in your area right now.
With all the MMGW/AGW opponents, someone would call them on it if they were lying.
High records are high records.
Rats, just noticed we're losing two minutes a day.
2013 LX 570 2016 LS 460
First of all, are you saying ALL temperature reporting stations in the USA are reporting to the Global Warming Chieftain? And are "blatantly lying" about daily weather temperature records?
That would mean:
1. A MASSIVE conspiracy on a scale we have never seen in the history of this country.
2. THOUSANDS of weather service employees being SILENT about their directives to LIE.
3. ALL of the employees are DEMOCRATS and/or LIBERALS who are behind the supposed GW Scam.
4. Not a whistle-blower in the bunch.
See how silly that is? So let's not again speak of a nation-wide conspiracy to lie about high temperatures, UMKAY?
Okay, now back to your other stuff.
I Googled "record high temperature" in the Google News section today. Just on the front page, I saw 7 of the 10 results were different cities/towns with record high temperatures set this week. The second page had 8 more towns with records. The 3rd page had 7 more. The 4th page had 6 more.
There is no doubt that for most of the country, in particular the Midwest and the East Coast, this appears to be an "extra warm" summer with a lot of records being tied and/or broken.
Now - does that mean anything, really, in the battle to prove/disprove MMGW? NO, NOT AT ALL.
But it is newsworthy. The USA Today is a newspaper. They report the news.
I only said the one in my location was blatantly inaccurate. I ASKED how many others are also sending false data to the data gathering center. If you recall a study was made and a large percentage were found either not working or putting out data that should not be included. Also many stations across the Northern tier were eliminated. So you can believe what your want. That is the beauty of this country. I just find it incredible that a news organization like USA today would put out such flaky news. I guess it sells papers. How's your weather this year? Looks like a cool summer for you also.
So you googled and found a few dozen cities that set records. That is not 1000s of records being broken. That was my original premise. It is Media Hype. I would guess in any year Winter, Spring, Summer or Fall that a few places experience record heat or cold. Not 1000s as that rag USA Today reported.
Now I want you to think about this. For our little town of 15k there are about 25 MADIS weather stations listed on Weather Underground. Now multiply that times ALL the cities in the USA. There are literally millions of stations reporting the weather back into the system. It should not be hard to find 1000 records broken on any given day of the year. So no it has nothing to do with global warming. However people in the AGW cult will try to use it to push their agenda. Here is just one of 1000s of examples. This one from Public Radio sponsored by our tax dollars.
Heat wave has Chicago planning for global warming
A heat wave is hitting much of the United States, and some states say they’ll soon be reeling from the effects of climate change. Chicago’s long-term forecast looks like a scene from a horror movie: lethal and extreme weather, including blizzards; a termite invasion, and even a 1.5 foot drop in the depth of Lake Michigan.
Aaron Durnbaugh, the deputy commissioner of Chicago’s Department of Environment, told The Takeaway that the forecast is based on fact, not fiction.
"We worked closely with the best scientists we could find to put forward our forecast, both in a best-cast and worst-case scenario -- looking towards the middle of the century and 2100, the end of the century -- and identifying different impacts related to precipitation and temperature, and then a follow on impact from those changes."
http://www.pri.org/science/environment/heat-wave-has-chicago-planning-for-global- - -warming4928.html
You are free to believe what you like. Does not make it fact.
PS
That Public Radio piece forgot it causes ingrown toenails :P
Gary, that could easily be just something like this: If 150 locales in Iowa have set high records on a day this summer, maybe it happened 2 or 3 times in each city. So, that could be 450 records set this summer JUST IN IOWA.
Add in a few more states, and 1000s is an easy number to get to.
Don't automatically assume someone is lying. That's just rude.
I believe the phrase I used, and stand by it is "Media Hype". Sensationalism to sell papers. We rarely get HONEST news today. It is all skewed by personal bias or ideologies. We all do it. Just don't all try to sell it as factual news. I think honest news reporting died when CNN was born. On air 24 hours a day, and not enough legitimate news to report. So they make up stories based on very weak details. Do I believe those involved in the AGW cult LIE. Absoulutely. They have been caught lying. The sad part is they have cost the tax payers Millions and are not in Prison.
Then, of course, there is also their snake oil salesman Al Gore who lies thru his teeth at the drop of a hat.
Who could trust that bunch?
2013 LX 570 2016 LS 460
4 different independent reviews of those e-mails took place, and they all established that the SCIENCE was not lied about - it was the POLITICS of GW that made the scientists do what they did. Not the science. The science was never in question.
Oh, I get it. It is not a lie if the Devil made you do it? All those POLITICAL entities that cleared the scientists were part of the MMGW bunch.
You will believe what you want to believe. I will say it again. That does not make it factual. You are becoming part of the minority as more and more evidence points at natural causes for the bulk or Climate Change. We are INSIGNIFICANT in the big picture of CC or GW or GC. The consensus is no longer valid. 31,000 scientists have distanced themselves from the UN IPCC, EAU and Al Gore.
I saw a new definition recently of the type of sentence you used above:
"WEASEL WORDS" A good alternative to BS.
2013 LX 570 2016 LS 460
Fine with me. But anyone who wants to engage me in discussing it needs to have a common-sensical stance, not a "oh look at those liars!" stance.
The uncompromising verdict of Dr Mörner is that all this talk about the sea rising is nothing but a colossal scare story, writes Christopher Booker.
Although the UN's Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) only predicts a sea level rise of 59cm (17 inches) by 2100, Al Gore in his Oscar-winning film An Inconvenient Truth went much further, talking of 20 feet, and showing computer graphics of cities such as Shanghai and San Francisco half under water. We all know the graphic showing central London in similar plight. As for tiny island nations such as the Maldives and Tuvalu, as Prince Charles likes to tell us and the Archbishop of Canterbury was again parroting last week, they are due to vanish.
But if there is one scientist who knows more about sea levels than anyone else in the world it is the Swedish geologist and physicist Nils-Axel Mörner, formerly chairman of the INQUA International Commission on Sea Level Change. And the uncompromising verdict of Dr Mörner, who for 35 years has been using every known scientific method to study sea levels all over the globe, is that all this talk about the sea rising is nothing but a colossal scare story.
Despite fluctuations down as well as up, "the sea is not rising," he says. "It hasn't risen in 50 years." If there is any rise this century it will "not be more than 10cm (four inches), with an uncertainty of plus or minus 10cm". And quite apart from examining the hard evidence, he says, the elementary laws of physics (latent heat needed to melt ice) tell us that the apocalypse conjured up by Al Gore and Co could not possibly come about.
The reason why Dr Mörner, formerly a Stockholm professor, is so certain that these claims about sea level rise are 100 per cent wrong is that they are all based on computer model predictions, whereas his findings are based on "going into the field to observe what is actually happening in the real world".
When running the International Commission on Sea Level Change, he launched a special project on the Maldives, whose leaders have for 20 years been calling for vast sums of international aid to stave off disaster. Six times he and his expert team visited the islands, to confirm that the sea has not risen for half a century. Before announcing his findings, he offered to show the inhabitants a film explaining why they had nothing to worry about. The government refused to let it be shown.
Similarly in Tuvalu, where local leaders have been calling for the inhabitants to be evacuated for 20 years, the sea has if anything dropped in recent decades. The only evidence the scaremongers can cite is based on the fact that extracting groundwater for pineapple growing has allowed seawater to seep in to replace it. Meanwhile, Venice has been sinking rather than the Adriatic rising, says Dr Mörner.
One of his most shocking discoveries was why the IPCC has been able to show sea levels rising by 2.3mm a year. Until 2003, even its own satellite-based evidence showed no upward trend. But suddenly the graph tilted upwards because the IPCC's favoured experts had drawn on the finding of a single tide-gauge in Hong Kong harbour showing a 2.3mm rise. The entire global sea-level projection was then adjusted upwards by a "corrective factor" of 2.3mm, because, as the IPCC scientists admitted, they "needed to show a trend".
When I spoke to Dr Mörner last week, he expressed his continuing dismay at how the IPCC has fed the scare on this crucial issue. When asked to act as an "expert reviewer" on the IPCC's last two reports, he was "astonished to find that not one of their 22 contributing authors on sea levels was a sea level specialist: not one". Yet the results of all this "deliberate ignorance" and reliance on rigged computer models have become the most powerful single driver of the entire warmist hysteria.

You don't have to lie to get things done in this world.
To think an organization as large as the NWS could have a "let's all lie" agenda and require tens of thousands of independent weather stations to lie is just totally beyond the realm of believable possibility.
On top of that. as I already said - you'd have to have EVERY high-ranking and low-ranking employee on the same MMGW bandwagon. And that's just not possible.
