I do not remember a single time where you argued against man made global warming but you insist you are neutral on the subject. Something just does not make sense here. What are your beliefs on GW?
2013 LX 570 2016 LS 460
Lack of speculation would make for a boring discussion, no? Can a beneficial discussion occur without some speculation involved?
I stated my beliefs on GW in an earlier post today. Here it is again:
I think the warming is happening. My personal belief is that the POSSIBILITY of the Earf warming because of Mankind's activities needs to be studied. And if there is anything we can do to prevent such negative influences, then we should do it, within reason. In the meantime, to hedge our bets, we should limit our fossil fuel usage.
You may not have your mind made up on man made GW. You sure do on the subject of reducing the use of fossil fuel at any cost. In fairness you have done your fair share by riding a low pollution device to work among other things. While I agree that cutting fossil fuel use has benefits. I do not consider it a cause to get on any bandwagon over. To me it looks like the GW bandwagon was close enough fit to satisfy your purpose. You fail to see the harm it is causing to young vulnerable minds.
So you do not believe that the officers of Enron conspired to defraud stock holders of billions of dollars?
2013 LX 570 2016 LS 460
I did not poo-poo that. I made the point ( a valid one, might I add ) that regardless of what the ocean has been doing lately, surface temps in the Northern hemisphere are not following the plan - they are still warming. ( Perhaps that is the area of the 20% to 10% of Earf which is NOT governed by ocean temps? )
Gary says, "You fail to see the harm it is causing to young vulnerable minds."
I have two kids. Anything their vulnerable little minds do not understand will be clarified by me. AlGore will not influence MY kids one way or t'other.
Gary says, "So you do not believe that the officers of Enron conspired to defraud stock holders of billions of dollars?"
I don't know enough about the Enron situation to comment.
But don't try to put words into my post which were not there. I did not say "there has never been a conspiracy in the Histowaw of Earf" I stated that as a rule I fear there are far fewer conspiracies than those events which are blamed on them.
me: well if I took that approach that because something is possible, I should act to prevent it; should I:
1) get a checkup everyday from my doctor, because it is possible that I might have a cancer?
2) should I get my brakes checked because the line might have a crack?
3) should I buy as many lottery tickets as I have money in the bank, because it is possible I might hit the Powerball numbers?
No, no, and no. I might find any of those reasonable if they were PROBABLE, NOT just "possible". So yes, study is fine - and those studies say if there is any warming it is very minimal, or we are going into a cooling period. But to take action to prevent something, when you don't know if what you are doing has no effect or has the opposite effect is not typical. For all you know, the CO2 we're putting into the air may be preventing another Ice Age from occurring. So stop putting CO2 into the air and it's possible you could freeze all of Canada in 100-200 years.
Most anything is possible. Science is about finding what is extremely probable or definite, and then acting on that. Would you take any old drug anyone hands you because it is possible it'll make you healthier? I'm glad you're not head of the FDA releasing drugs to the public, because it is possible they work as the scientists who developed the theories told you.
More studies are out there showing the bad things about warming than the good things.
No one is concerned about an Ice Age in our lifetime.
WE know pollution is bad, and not just for warming purposes. Clean air - heard of it?
There are more than just "AlGore said we should cut back" reasons for cutting fossil fuel usage. Possibly influencing the warming trend is just one of them.
If not for Al Gore and his scheme to sell carbon credits, would we be having this discussion? I doubt it. We are not discussing Nuclear Winter proposed by Carl Sagan in the 1970s. Our kids are getting bombarded by half truths and Hollywood propaganda. Not all parents are as tuned into the subject as you may be. The state of CA with all its whacked out politicians and Hollywood cronies are proposing standards on CO2 that could devastate our economy. They have their McMansions and money to burn. So why not throw the burden of cutting back on the backs of the working men and women. That is what is happening due to this awful GW Cult. As usual the Rich can buy their way out of it. How about the rest of US?
You did see the $45 Trillion needed to FIX Global Warming? You want your kids to pay that debt? We need to STOP these NUT cases, not give them credibility.

After a winter of heavy snowfall that forced repeated closure of mountain passes, unseasonably cold conditions have continued long into spring in Washington's Cascade Range.
Paradise, the jumping-off point for the trail to Camp Muir, received 2 feet of fresh snow over Monday night, with 5-foot drifts and 70 mph winds at Camp Muir, Bacher said.
"Nobody expects a blizzard in June," he said.
Rangers received a call at 3:30 a.m. Tuesday that three hikers had been trapped in the sudden blizzard on the Muir snowfield as they were descending.
The three apparently built a snow shelter at about 9,500 feet. The weather prevented an immediate rescue attempt after their call, Bacher said. The other male hiker left the married couple and battled through heavy snow to reach Camp Muir at 7:15 a.m. Tuesday and was able to direct rescuers to the other hikers near Anvil Rock, a large outcropping at the edge of the Muir snowfield.
The others were brought to a shelter at Camp Muir about an hour later, but the woman's husband was unconscious and later died, Bacher said. He suffered from hypothermia and frostbite.
Now I am bummed.

"Bonus Days
We have some really fun news for you die-hard snow fans: Aspen Mountain is opening back up for skiing & snowboarding this weekend! A record winter snowfall has left the top of the mountain covered in snow as the traditional summer operating season begins. With an average depth of more than three feet on upper slopes, the mountain will open with seven runs and about 45 acres of mostly intermediate terrain. If you haven't quite gotten your skiing quota in this season you're in luck. Head up to Aspen this weekend and get in a few turns in the Colorado sunshine."...

Because whenever I see them(in videos and pictures) they are content to just ride a chunk of ice for as long as they see fit, and then jump off in to the ocean! Where's the beef?
Beautiful creatures, and ones that could umm....adapt if they had to. My point is, there will be oodles and skaboodles of cold, icy terrain for them even if some ice melts repeatedly and chunks off. On the Australian side of the ice-falling-off shoreline. Deep in the ice tundra's.
Can anyone else tell me why the environmentalists are freaking out about the polar bears? Because meself is tellin' meself that everything will be all right with the polar bears.

2013 LX 570 2016 LS 460
It is very simple. First they could care less about the Polar Bears. The environmentalists have tried to stop oil exploration and production in the Arctic for 50 or more years. By putting the Polar bear on the endangered species list, it will restrict what the oil companies can do in the Polar bear habitat. The state of Alaska is up in arms as oil is their life blood.
If the Arctic were to melt away as the GW Cult would have you believe the Polar bears would lose their habitat. Whether there is oil production or not. This is just another way to keep US from using our own resources. Part of a grand plan to put you and I in a cave while the wealthy continue their opulent lifestyle.
So yes the Polar Bears may face an unpredictable future. No they are in good supply as we speak. No where close to being endangered.
What a crock! A buddy at Boeing who unfortunately left us in 1993 from cancer used to always say that. What a crock!
2021 Kia Soul LX 6-speed stick
Because they are shrewd business people. They know that if they tell a bunch of lies about polar bears drowning people will get all dewy -eyed and come up with some cash.
In today's paper there was a little story about how the government had granted permission to oil company workers to "harass" polar bears. The story was slanted to make it sound like evil George Bush and the evil oil companies were up in the tundra getting kicks out of hurting bears.
The truth, of course, is a bit different. When the polar bears are trying to eat you, you may now fire rubber bullets at them to save your life. You may also use noise makers to scare them off. If all else fails you may shoot them if they continue to chew on your leg. We have similar "harass" laws here in the lower 48 to scare off deer who are destroying farm crops.
But you don't hear that in the media. You get painted an image of Dick Chaney blasting away at some cute bear cub while he drinks a coke.
The environmentalists are just as dishonest and greedy as any oil executive.

Gore’s personal electricity consumption up 10%, despite “energy-efficient” home renovations
NASHVILLE - In the year since Al Gore took steps to make his home more energy-efficient, the former Vice President’s home energy use surged more than 10%, according to the Tennessee Center for Policy Research.
“A man’s commitment to his beliefs is best measured by what he does behind the closed doors of his own home,” said Drew Johnson, President of the Tennessee Center for Policy Research. “Al Gore is a hypocrite and a fraud when it comes to his commitment to the environment, judging by his home energy consumption.”
In the past year, Gore’s home burned through 213,210 kilowatt-hours (kWh) of electricity, enough to power 232 average American households for a month.
I could power my 3000 sq ft home for 44 years with his one years usage. So who is the environmentalist? I do have 56 CFLs in my home. No solar panels yet. No going on TV and telling people to cut back on their fossil fuel usage. Al Gore is a Pig and an Hypocrite. Then maybe he realizes his GW Cult is losing steam and he is just going to do what many do that are worth $100 million. Live the opulent lifestyle.
Since taking steps to make his home more environmentally-friendly last June, Gore devours an average of 17,768 kWh per month –1,638 kWh more energy per month than before the renovations – at a cost of $16,533. By comparison, the average American household consumes 11,040 kWh in an entire year, according to the Energy Information Administration.
In the wake of becoming the most well-known global warming alarmist, Gore won an Oscar, a Grammy and the Nobel Peace Prize. In addition, Gore saw his personal wealth increase by an estimated $100 million thanks largely to speaking fees and investments related to global warming hysteria.
“Actions speak louder than words, and Gore’s actions prove that he views climate change not as a serious problem, but as a money-making opportunity,” Johnson said. “Gore is exploiting the public’s concern about the environment to line his pockets and enhance his profile.”

The tomato scare that has sickened 170 people and is the worst food scare since the E. coli/spinach outbreak is being blamed by some environmental activists on climate change and the need for more food grown with the help of genetically modified organisms (GMOs).
I was interviewing a board member of Food and Water Watch for a feature I am writing, and he positioned the scare as an eco outbreak because with less space to farm, more droughts, and higher costs, GMOs are the logical choice for farmers who want quick crops from less land.
For the record the source of the tomato infection hasn’t been determined. The FDA hasn’t narrowed its search. But this time of year the most common varieties are red round, red Roma, and red plum tomatoes. They are most likely grown in Florida or Mexico. The agency admits U.S. consumer demand to eat fresh fruits and vegetables year-round - has its job a lot more difficult. And concedes it needs more inspectors overseas. See a good take on this from the San Jose Mercury News here.
Anyway, the source of the E. coli in spinach turned out to be feces on the hoofs of wild boars that traipsed through spinach plants.
The source of tomato infections may turn out to be something as naturally errant as that. But with less room and climate change affecting crops, another outbreak is sure to come. GMO strands can only serve to exacerbate the spread.
So it’s definitely worth watching where your food and water comes from. And know their source.

Which do we think he chose to help global warming...
2014 Malibu 2LT, 2015 Cruze 2LT,
The research proves that destructive ability of earthquakes on Earth increases alarmingly fast and that this trend is set to continue, unless the problem of "global warming" is comprehensively and urgently addressed.
The analysis of more than 386,000 earthquakes between 1973 and 2007 recorded on the US Geological Survey database proved that the global annual energy of earthquakes on Earth began increasing very fast since 1990.
Dr. Chalko said that global seismic activity was increasing faster than any other global warming indicator on Earth and that this increase is extremely alarming.
"The most serious environmental danger we face on Earth may not be climate change, but rapidly and systematically increasing seismic, tectonic and volcanic activity," said Dr. Chalko.
"Increase in the annual energy of earthquakes is the strongest symptom yet of planetary overheating.
Dr. Chalko has urged other scientists to maximize international awareness of the rapid increase in seismic activity, pointing out that this increase is not theoretical but that it is an Observable Fact.
"Unless the problem of global warming (the problem of persistent thermal imbalance of Earth) is addressed urgently and comprehensively - the rapid increase in global seismic, volcanic and tectonic activity is certain. Consequences of inaction can only be catastrophic. There is no time for half-measures."
Start digging those caves. Far from a fault zone is preferable...
The results have shocked campaigners who hoped that doubts would have been silenced by a report last year by more than 2,500 scientists for the UN Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), which found a 90 per cent chance that humans were the main cause of climate change and warned that drastic action was needed to cut greenhouse gas emissions.
The findings come just before the release of the government's long-awaited renewable energy strategy, which aims to cut the UK's greenhouse gas emissions by 20 per cent over the next 12 years.
The poll, by Ipsos MORI, found widespread contradictions, with some people saying politicians were not doing enough to tackle the problem, even though they were cynical about government attempts to impose regulations or raise taxes. In a sign of the enormous task ahead for those pushing for drastic cuts to carbon emissions, many people said they did not want to restrict their lifestyles and only a small minority believe they need to make 'significant and radical' changes such as driving and flying less.
The emperor is being seen as without garments. The additional taxes raised just get sloshed into the central pot to cover up for poor governmental fiscal policy over the years; not to fund alternative senergy sources etc.
We are truly becoming even more distrusting of our politicians' pronouncements and ACC is just one high-visibility topic among many..........we are starting to form our own opinions and refusing to be spoon-fed pap by elected representatives with no formal training in the subject. There are eminent scientists who strongly disagree with ACC but they are denied airtime - particularly by the BBC.

"Volcanic eruptions reshape Arctic ocean floor: study Wed Jun 25, 4:13 PM ET
PARIS (AFP) - Recent massive volcanoes have risen from the ocean floor deep under the Arctic ice cap, spewing plumes of fragmented magma into the sea, scientists who filmed the aftermath reported Wednesday. "...

Previous research had concluded that this kind of so-called pyroclastic eruption could not happen at such depths due to the crushing pressure of the water.
Last I checked molten lava is fairly warm. Could it be the cause of melting the ice cap? I know it is not ambient outside temps as they have set record low temperatures in the Arctic the last few years. I am surprised that Al Gore is not out saying that global warming is causing volcanic eruptions as well as earthquakes.
"From the viewpoint of science, the North Pole is just another point on the globe, but symbolically it is hugely important. There is supposed to be ice at the North Pole, not open water," said Mark Serreze of the US National Snow and Ice Data Centre in Colorado.
If it happens, it raises the prospect of the Arctic nations being able to exploit the valuable oil and mineral deposits below these a bed which have until now been impossible to extract because of the thick sea ice above.
Seasoned polar scientists believe the chances of a totally ice free North Pole this summer are greater than 50:50 because the normally thick ice formed over many years at the Pole has been blown away and replaced by huge swathes of thinner ice formed over a single year.

North Pole could be ice-free this summer
North Pole could be ice-free this summer, scientists say
* Ice retreated to a record level last fall when the Northwest Passage opened briefly
* Weather patterns will determine whether the ice cover melts completely this summer
* Scientists say the Arctic meltdown is not part of a historic cycle
By Alan Duke
CNN
(CNN) -- The North Pole may be briefly ice-free by September as global warming melts away Arctic sea ice, according to scientists from the National Snow and Ice Data Center in Boulder, Colorado. Scientists say it's a 50-50 bet that the thin Arctic sea ice will completely melt away at the geographic North Pole.
Scientists say it's a 50-50 bet that the thin Arctic sea ice will completely melt away at the geographic North Pole.
"We kind of have an informal betting pool going around in our center and that betting pool is 'does the North Pole melt out this summer?' and it may well," said the center's senior research scientist Mark Serreze.
It's a 50-50 bet that the thin Arctic sea ice, which was frozen last autumn, will completely melt away at the geographic North Pole, Serreze said.
The ice retreated to a record level in September when the Northwest Passage -- the sea route through the Arctic Ocean -- opened up briefly for the first time in recorded history.
"What we've seen through the past few decades is the Arctic sea ice cover is becoming thinner and thinner as the system warms up," Serreze said.
Specific weather patterns will determine whether the North Pole's ice cover melts completely this summer, he said.
"Last year, we had sort of a perfect weather pattern to get rid of ice to open up that Northwest Passage," Serreze said. "This year, a different pattern can set up so maybe we'll preserve some ice there. We're in a wait-and-see mode right now. We'll see what happens."
The brief lack of ice at the top of the globe will not bring any immediate consequences, he said.
"From the viewpoint of the science, the North Pole is just another point in the globe, but it does have this symbolic meaning," Serreze said. "There's supposed to be ice at the North Pole. The fact that we may not have any by the end of this summer could be quite a symbolic change."
Serreze said it's "just another indicator of the disappearing Arctic sea ice cover" but that it is happening so soon is "just astounding to me."
"Five years ago, to think that we'd even be talking about the possibility of the North Pole melting out in the summer, I would have never thought it," he said.
The melting, however, has been long seen as inevitable, he said.
"If you talked to me or other scientists just a few years ago, we were saying that we might lose all or most of the summer sea ice cover by anywhere from 2050 to 2100," Serreze said. "Then, recently, we kind of revised those estimates, maybe as early as 2030. Now, there's people out there saying it might be even before that. So, things are happening pretty quick up there."
Serreze said those who suggest the Arctic meltdown is just part of a historic cycle are wrong.
"It's not cyclical at this point. I think we understand the physics behind this pretty well," he said. "We've known for at least 30 years, from our earliest climate models, that it's the Arctic where we'd see the first signs of global warming.
"It's a situation where we hate to say we told you so, but we told you so," he said.
According to the article there is a better than 50/50 chance that it does melt but my bet is that they are wrong. If it does melt I will eat crow. If it doesn't melt? Well?
2013 LX 570 2016 LS 460
The bottom line is there is NOTHING you or I or AL Gore can do to change the course of Nature. No matter how many $trillions of dollars we throw at GW.
I miss George Carlin already. He knew how to address the arrogance of the environmentalists.
This proves my point. These yahoos are trying to make predictions for the future and cannot. These are the same types that cannot tell me what tomorrows weather will be here in San Diego. And you think we should trust them to tell us what will happen 10-20-30-100 years from now. You gotta be joking. Wasting another penny on GW studies is STUPID.
If Mother Nature gives us lemons we make a lemon meringue pie
If your point is that no one can predict the future, then we all know that. It's a useless point to make, unless it's to a five-year-old.
My point is that it's hard to believe the Earth is in a cooling phase if the NW Passageway opened up for the first time ever last year.
What I care about is the weather now and what we KNOW is happening.
So the North Pole ice is thinner than any recent time. The South Pole ice is thicker in the middle regions. So what? For man to think they are going to change that by driving a Yugo instead of a Hummer is utter nonsense. Someone feels so compelled to drive a Yugo, I say go for it. Don't try to get me into those little POC cars.
I did test drive a Yaris while waiting for my Sequoia to be serviced. I would not waste good money on one of those noisy little beasts. Would I own a small car to run to the store etc. Sure why not. I would never go on a trip over 50 miles in one.
PS
If they are worried about the polar bears. Ship a bunch to the South Pole and let em eat penguins for a change.

Tax credit stalemate in Congress
Builders of solar power plants fear that a government decision to halt applications to use federal lands as it weighs environmental consequences could harm an industry still in its infancy.
"It's simply not sending the right message to the American public that they (the U.S. government) are committed to getting solar off the ground," Holly Gordon, vice president of legislative and regulatory affairs at Palo Alto's Ausra, said of the government's 22-month moratorium on new land claims. That company has filed claims to build plants on federal land in Arizona and Nevada, and is developing a solar power plant on private land in San Luis Obispo County.
The U.S. Bureau of Land Management last month declared the moratorium on its lands throughout the West as it studies the environmental impact of the new projects. The moratorium will last at least through spring 2010.
So far, companies have filed 125 right-of-way claims to build on 1 million of the acres that the BLM controls in the West. Solar power projects already in the pipeline will continue to be evaluated on a site-specific basis.
Companies such as Ausra and Oakland's BrightSource Energy said Friday that previously announced plans to build large-scale concentrating solar plants will continue. Both firms have signed deals to sell power from those proposed solar plants to Pacific Gas & Electric.

Desert on public land already is moving through regulatory channels.
"We were surprised by the moratorium," said Joshua Bar-Lev, vice president of regulatory affairs at BrightSource Energy, whose first Mojave plant is targeted to go online as early as 2011.
The solar industry had urged federal regulators to develop a systematic approach to licensing these new generation of solar power plants.
"We don't want to have to have separate and new environmental studies for every claim to BLM land," Bar-Lev said. "What we wanted, in effect, is a mapping of the entire West that would tell us what areas were suitable and what areas were not suitable for development."
One impact of the BLM decision, said Ausra's Gordon, could be an increase in price to build on available private land. She also said the decision might encourage companies to look to build solar plants in Europe "where the legislative and regulatory atmosphere is more welcoming," instead of in the United States.
Both Bar-Lev and Gordon said the solar industry hopes to get the BLM to modify or reverse its decision.

Plans for three wind turbines at car manufacturer Lotus' facility in Norfolk have been put on hold after the proposals were rejected by a local planning committee in a move that the company behind the turbines described as the " worst example yet of a planning system that is not fit for purpose".
The planning application for three 2MW turbines, capable of providing power for the Lotus facility as well as approximately 1,000 local homes, had previously been rejected by the committee on the basis of "visual intrusiveness"
