Was this really necessary? Or just another STATE (etc) revenue source?

Just got back from a "SMOG ONLY" vendor.

The test was done on a 15 year old SUV.

    Here are some actual measurements:

Emissions Control Systems Visual Inspection/Functional Check Results, passed 18/18 tests

Visual Inspection (Pass), Functional Check (Pass), Emissions Test (Pass)

    Idle Emission Test Results
    863 rpm, (%co2-14.6) ,(%02-0.3), HC (ppm) (MAX 100, AVE 26, MEASURED 0 (ZERO) , ) CO (%) (MAX 1.00 AVE 0.00 MEAS 0.00)

    2649 rpm, (%co2-14.5), (%02-0.5) , HC(ppm) ( MAX 180, AVE 11, MEAS 1) C0 (%) (MAX 1.10 AVE 0.10 MEAS 0.00)

It is advertised as a RANDOM test (over a certain amount of years). I however have gotten in effect a BI ANNUAL mandatory random inspections cycle. This is the FOURTH one by the way.

    a.) necessary.
b.) just another state revenue source.

    I vote for b.)

If your state is like mine they test all cars, but anything built before 1996 doesn't have the right computers so when they test those older cars they come back with ZERO emissions. Kind of like interrogating someone who's deaf and blind about what they saw.

But they get your fee so they don't care. Makes you wonder what the real motivation about all the GW crapola is.

Staging a global forum on climate change is a dilemma, as it adds to the very problem it is trying to solve.

Around 13,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide (CO2) will be added to the Earth's greenhouse effect from the December 1-12 meeting of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change, the UNFCCC said.

That estimate is based on a turnout of 8,000 people, but as of Sunday 10,657 people had registered for the talks.

Poland, which is hosting the meeting, "plans to offset the total emissions resulting from the conference once a final calculation has been made," the UNFCCC said.

Under offsets, anyone emitting carbon can invest in a scheme that mitigates the pollution by the same amount.

Typical projects involve reforestation or transferring cleaner technology to developing countries in order to ease their own emissions of greenhouse gases.

The Mango trees planted to offset the GHG put out by the Global Warming Concert Tour all died from lack of water. Guess that was not such a great plan by the head Guru Al Gore. I can tell them that planting trees in the Arctic will not help bring back the ice. It is best to plant indigenous trees to avoid future eco damage.
  • kernickkernick Member Posts: 4,072
Under offsets, anyone emitting carbon can invest in a scheme that mitigates the pollution by the same amount.

And a self-deluding scheme at that. Why? Because the conference and the planting-of-trees are independent events. While they may cancel each other out; the option exists to have a net decrease! simply plant-trees and have no conference.
So the conference is still doing harm, as it does not allow a decrease to occur!

Meanwhile some people in Brazil or Indonesia are cutting the rainforests to make furniture or flooring. And myself and others will be cutting trees for firewood, if there are taxes put on heating fuel or electricity. People are already doing so with the costs and shape of the economy. http://www.usatoday.com/money/industries/energy/2008-12-01-firewood_N.htm

Weyerhaeuser has been reforesting Brazil for many years. I just installed 1300 feet of Lyptus Wood from Brazil. It grows to commercial size in 15 years. It is harder than hard rock maple or Brazilian Cherry. It was used as cutting boards to start with. Now you can get it for furniture, cabinets and flooring. Beautiful stuff and eco friendly.

I went with formaldehyde-free grass. Neither one is all that great from a freight standpoint.

With all the bamboo clothing showing up, I expect to see some bamboo fabric in a new car as well as 'boo dash kits.
  • gagricegagrice Member Posts: 31,450
The BMW X5 can be had with Bamboo. We put bamboo in our old home that we are still trying to sell. It does not hold up very well. Do no use bamboo in an office. The plastic wheels raise havoc on it. Bamboo is only about half the hardness of Maple and not close to the Brazilian hardwoods.

I was always partial to either Rosewood or Brazilian Teak.
  • steverstever Guest Posts: 52,454
Depends on the brand. Mine's harder than the #2 red oak downstairs. I tossed a bunch of soft samples first though. Actually wanted some soft pine, but the freight was cheaper getting bamboo from China than shipping pine from the Southeast.

The fabric supposedly isn't very durable but the trim in the X5 should be fine.

34 BILLION and growing!? If the Demos are really concerned about the so called "little guy" here is a modest proposal. Give a ( big three) TAX CREDIT and/or/both voucher on the purchase of a 2008/2009 MY vehicle. ;) :shades: This can be extended to the prime generator of jobs: small business. So if the big 3 normally product 8 M vehicles per MY. Pretty simple to do the math? Let the consumer vote with their economic choices!!!!!!!

It is truly interesting it is coming to light the deal to make the SUV's/Truck segment being the a"prime segements" with the unions to fund the 30-50 year bloated auto logistics system. The party has LONG since been over !!! :surprise:

For those that think the GW Cult is not in this for the money, just hang on.

BOB JOHNSON, Associated Press Writer – Fri Dec 5, 4:43 am ET
MONTGOMERY, Ala. – For farmers, this stinks: Belching and gaseous cows and hogs could start costing them money if a federal proposal to charge fees for air-polluting animals becomes law.

Farmers so far are turning their noses up at the notion, which is one of several put forward by the Environmental Protection Agency after the U.S. Supreme Court ruled in 2007 that greenhouse gases emitted by belching and flatulence amounts to air pollution.

"This is one of the most ridiculous things the federal government has tried to do," said Alabama Agriculture Commissioner Ron Sparks, an outspoken opponent of the proposal.

It would require farms or ranches with more than 25 dairy cows, 50 beef cattle or 200 hogs to pay an annual fee of about $175 for each dairy cow, $87.50 per head of beef cattle and $20 for each hog.

The executive vice president of the Wyoming Farm Bureau Federation, Ken Hamilton, estimated the fee would cost owners of a modest-sized cattle ranch $30,000 to $40,000 a year. He said he has talked to a number of livestock owners about the proposals, and "all have said if the fees were carried out, it would bankrupt them."

It is our STINKING EPA gone crazy. It will only get worse.
  • ruking1ruking1 Member Posts: 19,826
Might be a reason growing MJ on federal lands has become such a booming business. It consumes C02 produces oxygen and is a cash crop. ;) No taxes on the land.... grow green!! :shades: :lemon:

"...belching and flatulence amounts to air pollution..."

That is similar to a proposal here in NY to consider each farm animal as a "point source" of pollution. That was the radical Vegan's plan to bankrupt farmers by making them pay penalties as if each cow was a toxic waste dump. Pure insanity by people who's idea of nature is a Disney movie.

Perhaps we should outlaw Vegans as it has been shown that a non-animal diet results in more belching and flatulence. ;)

  • gagricegagrice Member Posts: 31,450
I had a couple thoughts on this latest ignorance out of DC. Maybe by putting a limit on how many animals you can have before you pay the fart tax will encourage small farms. Without that tax a dairy farmer with only 24 cows could compete against the guy with 100s paying $175 per year per cow. PETA and the VEGANS need to be run out of the country. What a bunch of losers. If someone wants to destroy their system with an unbalanced diet. Fine, just don't try to force it on those with common sense.
  • ruking1ruking1 Member Posts: 19,826
Indeed for the last 50 years that I know of, the goal has been to DECREASE the number of farmers by attrition. One time honored tool of attrition has been to extend loans Fed, State, County and Local the ultimate goal to reclaim the land when those loans inevitably can not be paid back. Others ways have been to make the cost of water so high as to be uneconomical, if that is not enough increase swer rates to uneconomical levels. So, some lucky farmers close to urban boundaries can/ will sell farm land to developers who will urban plan it for uses " other than farmland" and build whatever projects, the local city, county, state, fed even, etc. wants instead. So now they are trying the environmental eviction/economic angle. One more tool in the destruction tool box. :lemon:

Just 1 more power grab by our governments. They have the ability to take whatever money they want from us thru property and income taxes, are paid for by lobbyists and other local wealthy people, and can make laws all in the name of "doing good" thru some convoluted theory they create.

And God-forbid if you want the freedom to own land, and make choices against this subjective "doing good" theory.

I guess we should be happy that we're not living 2,000 years ago and this same sort of political and societal power didn't force us to "do good" by casting our daughter into the volcano. ;)

If this were a free country, I might be tempted to say we need a revolution to get rid of our 20M, bureaucratic system that is planning and running our lives, and breaking us ($) while doing so.

On 1/27/2006, Algore said "We have 10 yrs left to save the planet from a scorching", We are down to 7yrs and a month..More nonsense from the lefthand, and their paid Climatologists...Folks, wake up, smell the roses, the only warming is the chatter from the lefthand in seizing power..And grabbing your money..Selling carbon credits and heading our life style to the trash dump..

They are after tailpipes---cars, trucks, Suvs, cattle, pigs, and anything that flatulents..The Democrats are inflated with self-importance, pompous, and pretentious---flatulent oratory...

EPA has been guided to nail the Big3 by setting mileage stds and emissions stds..Our liberal Congress despises capitalism, however, their liberal buddies, Lawyers, are happy with the system for they can sue the moral crap out of corporations, fat settlements in their pockets, and contribute back hefty sums to the Democratic party to keep the game going..Look at the cigarette settlement, only took them 30 yrs, but they keep hammering away at the health hazard, however they will never outlaw cigatettes..It's a cash cow for lawyers and tax revenue for Congress..

Lawyers representing the Global Warming crowd has crippled America's future and the "Change" mantra from the pres-elect will erode our freedoms further..In 2012 you will be after another "CHANGE", back to the good old days.

GM & Chrysler will be gone..SUVS and P/Us was 50% of their production and the cash cows, the eco-crowd hates our manufacturing base of the Motorcity, and the anti-war crowd wants our military dissolved. Our Military by 2011 will be used to protect our politicans from the general population..

Public works will be in full force..Govt will be forced to print money to pay the way for Socialism, for the tax revenues will dry up..No industry, no growth, and the poor will be poorer and the rich will be okay...

The Global Warming hoax was used in the 20s and 30s and you see what happened in Europe.. WWII..USSR went broke on the communism deal and started on the Capitalism binge, China likes Capitalism too, however it is hard to keep the population under wraps with the manufacturing bige, people like and want freedom..

It's damn cold in Florida this winter, so everybody please go start your internal combustion engine and warm us up..

Wait until gas prices start going up and the Left hand starts talking about excess-profits, and possibile govt take-over of the oil industry..Makes a good story-line in appealing to the hearts of the left-hand voters...Right-on baby..

Compare government to an M-1 tank, it crushs every thing it fires at or runs over!!!

Mother Nature takes care of the Earth and trumps Govt every time...The Gore family fortune was made in oil companies, mainly Occidental Petr, sold out when oil reached $147/barrel,then switched over to the business of carbon credits, windmills, solar panels, and green anything. He's on a roll, just taking the $$$$$ out of your pockets..

I can see the day when "Termites" will be on the Endangered Species List..

Passengers' fury as climate change protest at Stansted airport forces dozens of flights to be cancelled

Climate change protesters stormed Stansted Airport today in an astonishing breach of security that brought flights to a standstill.

More than 50 protesters from the Plane Stupid group cut through fencing in the early hours before chaining themselves together just yards from the runway.

Thousands of furious passengers left stranded after dozens of flights were cancelled and others seriously delayed had to be kept calm by armed police.

The incident, which is hugely embarrassing for airport operator BAA, is believed to be the first time demonstrators have managed to occupy one of Britain's major airports.

Bogus has about 4" but it didn't open until 12/20 last year. Hard frost and an inch in town last night. Everyone talks about it but no one does anything about it.

    But there's always Al Gore.

How about this - Al for Auto Czar?

"The [bailout] program would be overseen by an official, tapped by President George W. Bush, whom congressional aides and lawmakers describe as an "auto czar." This person would act as a kind of trustee with authority to bring together labor, management, creditors and parts suppliers to negotiate a restructuring plan. He or she also would be able to review any transaction or contract valued at more than $25 million."

    WSJ

Before you laugh too hard, Al did meet with POTUS-elect Obama the other day.

  • gagricegagrice Member Posts: 31,450
I would think that if the Bush administration goes along with the bill, he would pick someone that Obama would keep in the job. Big AL would be as rough on the Big 3 as Ralph Nader. Here is a tough pill for the automakers to swallow. CA could say you have to build only ZEV cars and they are out of business overnight.

One danger for auto makers is exposing the industry to congressional meddling as it attempts to build a new business model. The legislation, among other things, would bar the companies from participating in legal challenges to state laws designed to impose limits on greenhouse-gas emissions. The White House opposes that provision, congressional aides said.
