I must say that here in az, I didn't even know the aztek exsisted while shopping for my suv. I stumbled across it on the internet while researching various stuff, I actually think it was edmunds reviews or prices that I found it. The picture popped up on my screen and I got hit with this feeling, wow, I like this, I want to go look at one. My husband and I had already been shopping for about 1 month, and never came across it. The dealer never put one out front like they do most other models, and I'm surprised.

They don't really advertise it, It wasnt untill recently that I saw a pontiac commercial on tv that even mentioned the aztec in the pontiac line up of cars.

Now, I don't care so much about advertising on tv, cause they try and pass that cost on to the consumers, but if you're going to shop around, the dealers should push it more.

Its a great vehicle, and we too have been surprised at the lack of knowledge of the aztek. People are constantly asking me about it, and making comments, mostly all good, (yes Im referring to the looks believe it or not), and I have the bright yellow, so it definately attracts attention.

We love this car, and wish we would've spotted it earlier. Hoping it will last for the long haul, and would recommend it to anyone.

We have only seen about 5 others, all white except one in red, a 2000 or 2001, I'm the only one with a yellow.

Im sure they would sell more, and its definately right up there in the running with others in its class, so I don't know why pontiac dealers don't show it off more. We actually think it may even offer a little more. More leg room, more rear cargo space, quiet, long list of standard features, including antilock brakes which lots of other suvs charge extra for, cd, 6 speaker, rear ac/heat. etc. and lots of options available.

there is my input for ya. : )

I am currently checking out both the Aztek and REV and trying to figure which is the best deal for the options on basic models, just the FWD models. Since I get GM employee pricing I don't haggle and know the price difference for different option. Many options on the Tek can be added without having to upgrade to a higher cost model. The RDV CX has nice option but you cannot add a sun roof or the better radio with 10 speaker and steering wheel controls.

But the real test is how well the vehicle handle. In the next couple of months I will test driving both for more than just a couple of miles. My question is how do the two vehicle differ in handling. My fear is the RDV is more bulky and drives like my wife's Montana. Anyone got an opinion with some real driving experience
  • fedlawmanfedlawman Member Posts: 3,118
You really can't go wrong with either vehicle. Both offer tremendous value and, compared to similar vehicles (Lexus, Mercedes, Acura, Ford, etc.), have proven to be very trouble free.

Generally speaking, the Aztek has a sportier but harsher ride. In return, you get less body roll and more road feel.

The RDV exhibits somewhat more body roll, but in return, offers a smoother, quieter ride.

As far as bulk, the difference between the Aztek and RDV is negligible.

They really are very close cousins performance and size wise. In my opinion, your decision will probably be based more on styling and price than on performance.

I will look for these driving charateristics in the next few months as I test drive these vehicles. My dealer will let me take them for a half day and I when I drive streets in my neighborhood that I'm familar with the bumps and holes it will give me a better idea of which vehicle I like better. The RDV will probable resale better but I was trying to limit the price and monthly payments. I bike, kayak and play golf and need room for the stuff and I will also look at the storage area closely. The price of the RDV gets close to the Envoy when you add options and I do think the Envoy engine will probably last longer.
  • dindakdindak Member Posts: 6,632
Deals on the Aztek are better so if you can deal with the looks go for it. The RDV has a smoother ride but I thought the Aztek handled a bit better and still had a decent ride. That said, I drove them about 8-10 months apart so I could be wrong.

I just purchased a used 2001 Aztek and am looking into extended warranties. Any suggestions on ones you've had good luck with. I love my Aztek!
  • waymoresblueswaymoresblues Member Posts: 54
I too overextended my front drivers door (bad timing and high winds) and the Dealership's body shop rep just bent it back into place using a pair of leather gloves in the door jamb. Fine now.

I purchased a 7yr/100k mile bumper to bumper from Warranty Gold. Go to www.warrantygold.com to learn more.

It covers everything that your factory warranty does. They pay with their corporate credit card so you can take it to your dealership still if you want. The stereo, all the electronics, HUD, yada, yada, yada are all covered. Even squeeks and rattles are covered!

    Mine was about $1200

    From Rewters:

    Aztek no longer ugly

"GM executives, speaking at an industry luncheon marking the occasion of the recent New York International Auto Show, have announced that the Pontiac Aztek is no longer an ugly vehicle. Responding to loud criticism from a wide variety of industry sources and consumer groups, GM executives conceded that the Aztek did indeed have some 'pulchritudinous shortcomings' but that the market has come around to embracing the Aztek's 'uniqueness' and the '02 restyling has been a major success. So much so that GM has plans to increase their marketing activity for the vehicle that GM feels is 'right now the value leader in an important market and the car which best addresses the needs of the upscale and active, middle American car buyer'. When asked if the Aztek's reliance on radio advertising indicated Pontiac's desire to sell the car on its features, not its looks, GM executives were confidently predicting that the next round of Aztek magazine ads would go so far as to feature mostly un-retouched photos. 'We strongly believe that Americans want vehicles that make bold statements and have functional interiors' one GM executive was quoted as saying."

    There you have it.

i love this forum.... havent posted in awhile, but am lurking now and then!

"lulu the red awd aztek gt" has been back at the dealer quite a few times - the rear hatch problem remains a problem - next week she goes back for another adjustment. they have replaced the upper parts and the lower parts, and still it doesnt always work, usually doesnt work in chilly and damp weather. hot and sunny, no problem. i copied the part numbers from this forum, and they ordered them and replaced them (according to the invoices that i paid) and then ordered the hydraulic parts the next time, and replaced them, and still she doesnt pop when i click the read hatch both inside the car and on the key fob. its maddening.

i ALSO hyper-extended my drivers door somehow, and it went so far forward that it started to chip the paint where the door is flush with the front quarter panel (my car lingo is getting good here, huh?), they "fixed" it, but it still was not aligned correctly and i am hearing wind noise when i drive over 60 (often). they are going to re-do it the correct way next week when i take her in. somehow something happened to the door handle when the door hyperextended which is strange, and they are replacing that.

i have also been having some kind of weird clicking noise in the back passenger side, under the car, maybe something to do with the exhaust system. it happens when i am idling as well as when i park the car. clicks loudly every 5-10 seconds for about a half minute then stops. sound is getting louder. they replaced the muffler, and the sound is STILL there.

i love having an awesome warranty.

i bought this tek may 2001 and i already have 25,000 miles on it. eeeeeeekkkkkkk. fortunately i got the 100,000 miles extended warranty when i bought it. methinks i am in the shop so much because i am pretty hard on this car - driving from sea level to 9,500 ft about twice a month, driving highways at 80 (shhhhhh....) and lots of city stop and go rush hour crappy traffic too... and hauling gear - p.a. system, guitars, clothes, skis, surfboards, firewood, etc.

    I LOVE THIS CAR....

welcome to all of the new people, and to all of the peeps who are thinking of buying, DO IT! this is the best car i have ever had and my dad was in GM management and we got 4 new company cars/year which i got to drive. this is by far the coolest, most fun, best handling (the AWD is AWESOME - i was passing suburbans wearing chains while i was chainless in the mountains, with little slippage and great stoppage!!!!!)

    bye from che and lulu!
  • noastarnoastar Member Posts: 108
You can do the rear hatch thing yourself. I didn't know this either. All you have to do is raise the hatch and look for two rubber stoppers on each end. Give them a turn and then close. I think right extends them, but don't quote me on that. Just keep turning until it pops open nicely.

Sorry to hear about the door. What a pain.

About the above comments about the Aztek looking good... I noticed another article saying Ford was canceling the Licoln Blackwood after selling a whopping 370 some units. How sad is that? They call the Aztek a disaster, but I think if any car has earned the right to sit next to the edsel; it's gotta be the Blackwood. Way to go Ford!

Some things are just so different and unique (pronounce that UGLY) that for some unknown reason they attract you. That's what happened to me with the Aztek. I surfed the web for weeks looking at compact to medium sized SUVs, and got my list down to just a few, with the Tek at the top of the list. Would you believe that the first Pontiac dealer we went to didn't have a single Aztek in stock, and "didn't know when one would come in"!!! As the huge GM rebates were scheduled to end in a few weeks, this attitude really turned us off. The next day, a Sunday, we went to another Pontiac dealer a little further from home, and there, on the showroom floor was a beautiful, yes I said beautiful, ruby red Tek fitted out just the way I wanted it. I walked around it, kicked the tires, popped the hatch and sat in the driver's seat, and fell in LOVE! The salesman was great, gave me a great price that was over $3000 under sticker. All I needed was a test drive to seal the deal...... and would you believe that this dealership would not allow any test drives on a Sunday??? Now, my wife is about 4'9" tall, so being able to adjust the driver's seat to reach the gas and brake pedals, be able to steer and see over the dashboard is a bigger problem than you might think. She tried the seat in the showroom, and couldn't reach the pedals without being on top of the wheel (not a great idea with airbags). And when she tried the hatch, she couldn't reach the top of the hatch to close it (we would have to have a step ladder in the back at all times). So the Aztek struck out. If the Aztek could cook dinner and do the laundry, it would have been another story, but alas, it was not to be. (Ended up with a Liberty Sport 3.7, and really love it too.... not anywhere as ugly, but a great ride!)
  • kermitekkermitek Member Posts: 120
*yawn* how about that tired rerun of the "rewters news" in #3708? I saw it already over in the "ugly cars 2002" forum section. Guess the author didn't get enough of a fun reaction over there....

gregeaston - on the hatch ajar light fixing itself - that happened to us too! Ours did it when new but we were too busy to follow thru with going back for a fix (plus we have been tweaking the rubber adjusters ourselves) -- we haven't had the false alarm 'hatch ajar' anytime in recent memory.

cheche - great to hear from you again! I have noticed that about the front doors too, and have been watching out when using the doors esp in windy conditions. So far no hyperextensions (knock on wood). Wow that's a lot of miles! :) Ours only has 12k.

oldntired - That's a bummer about the dealer being so obtuse. You feel the Aztek is ugly (you're not alone)... do you think the Liberty front end looks like a Barney doll like was suggested over on the "ugly cars 2002" thread? To each his/her own... but I for one am not fond of the Liberty - too tiny inside for our needs and no HUD, no camping option, no internal bike rack option or volume to hold bikes, no self-leveling suspension, etc... Good luck with yours.

I thought it was interesting, I thought you might find it interesting also. I think it represents further proof of GM's interest in continuing with the Aztek, which I think is a good idea. I'm not the original poster of it, I saw it and reposted it here.

Sorry you found it boring, when I see things like that in the future I won't post them here.

I never saw the date, but come to think about it I guess even reuters can play stupid jokes. Anyway sales were up by 1000 units in Feburary as compared to Janurary, so not bad when other Domestic makes are loosing sales.

I have put 2400 miles on my 2002 Aztek in just 16 days. This is my company car and so far so good. The rear hatch ajar annoyance went away 5 days ago. I pop the hatch at least 9 times a day getting parts in and out. I guess enough slamming/use fixed it. Anyone use a power inverter with thier Tek? I am still having issues with my 400 watt power inverter blowing the fuse. I know it isnt the inverter because I can plug it into my Cadillac Catera and it works fine. This is becoming a super annoyance as the fuse is under the hood (one thing I dont understand is why the fuse for the rear power outlet is in the car while the front 3 outlets fuse is under the hood). I am getting used to the odd looks and glares from people. A new shipment just came in for other co-workers. Several of the older men (I am 25..older is 40+) are very hesitant about giving up thier full size vans for that "geek van". I like it though...how often are oil changes by the book? 3K or 5K?
  • montanafanmontanafan Member Posts: 945
The Aztek uses a oil life monotoring system based on your driving. I would think someone using it for service calls would be at the low end of the range, possible it might come on under 3k. If the car is a company car, dosen't the lease company have a required change interval? Also have you tried the inverter in all of the four power outlets? Maybe the others would perfom better.

Surfed thru Radio Shack's site and looked over the owner's manual on their 300 watt inverter. It recommended anything using above 140 watts, the invertor should be connected to the vehicle battery. Surfed by the Dell site and looked over the specs on some of their lamp tops. Looks like they run around 70+watts. Not an electrical person, but someone said the problem may be in what you are plugging into the inverter. Also with more of your co-workers driving Azteks, they should be running into the same problems with their laptops. If you have any company bulletin board you may want to post the question there.

Before a friend of mine buys an Aztek, he was hoping somebody here could answer the following questions.

    1. We noticed that the fuel tank's filler tube that runs from the gas-cap to the tank is exposed in the Aztek's wheel well. I've never seen this before and was wondering if anybody has had any kind of problems with it.

    2. The salesman is telling us that if we order the Aztek (about 8 weeks delivery time) that they cannot give us the current monthly rebate because they wouldn't have the VIN number. That seems odd to me - it seems like you should get whatever rebate is being offered at the time of the sale, versus what's being offered at the time of delivery.

    3. What kinds of rebates have been offered in the past on the Aztek? Can we expect to see the same rebates in the next month or two? They're trying to pressure us into buying the Aztek on their lot because "if you order an Aztek, there's no telling if you'll get a rebate or not."

Thanks in advance for any advice...

I have researched and looked and looked and looked and have finally decided that the Aztek is the SUV for me. I have found a new 2001 on a lot nearby that has a MSRP of $28745 and they have quoted me a price of $21500.( No I am not kidding and that isn't a typo.) That is the first price they gave me. Should I be concerned that there is actually something wrong with this vehicle or are they just trying to move it out? I don't want to pass up this great deal but.... I don't want a lot of problems later on either. Please help.

Also, could I get an opinion on leather seats. I will just be using the Aztek for everyday things. Groceries, shopping, hauling kids etc.
Will I like the leather seats. Never had them before. Thanks.

I bought 2 Azteks about one year ago. Each one listed for almost $29,000. I paid dealer cost and there was a $1,000 rebate at the time.

Within the last two months I traded in both of them. One had 9,000 miles on it and I got $15,500 for it. The other had 22,500 miles on it and I got $15,300 for it (it also had a factory 4 year-100,000 miles warranty included).

The one with 9,000 miles on it the dealer had someone come in the same day and buy it for $16,000.

$21,500 does seem pretty cheap but I've seen them advertized where I live for almost that much off. There must be some factory-to-dealer rebates going on.
  • fedlawmanfedlawman Member Posts: 3,118
You lost about $25,000! Why did you trade them in?
  • kermitekkermitek Member Posts: 120
    plutonious:

    1. We haven't had a problem with the filler tube, although it is more sensitive to fuel pumps which want to shut off a lot. It might be a tad too small in diameter. About 1 in 5 of the gas stations I go to, I have to throttle back on the feed rate while fueling or the pump shuts off thinking the tank is full. On my other cars like my 99 Formula I can fuel at maximum rate at just about all stations. It's not a major thing though. And it might be a fluke just on our unit.

    2. The salesman is accurate but sneaky. He's right but he really should tell you this: you can get any rebates in effect at the time you take delivery. He could tell you - all he needs to do is pull a VIN from a vehicle in stock. They had at least $2k off (sometimes $3k!) the sticker as a factory Aztek rebate for most of calendar 2001, and then in 2002 they built the discount into the sticker in the form of equipment and pricing. But they have also had either 0% or the $2002 going so far all year, and I believe it will continue in one form or another for quite a while.

    3. Get what you want! If there are none around that you like, I'd suggest ordering one. But also, go to two dealers and have them both run a locate for you with the colors and eqpt you want. You might be surprised to find exactly what you want nearby! Also - have you tried www.gmbuypower.com?

aliciab8s: Don't be concerned it's deeply discounted. Some dealers are positively phobic about being able to unload these, and that's to the buyer's advantage! Another thing you can do is test drive it and take it to another dealer, have them do a free safety inspection for you. It will catch a lot of major problems. Their body shop or maint. supervisor can tell you if it's had collision damage by looking at it while up on the rack. Our Tek was about $28k, and we got several thou off too! As for leather - it's great for families (we have two little tykes). It wears like iron, is spill resistant and odor resistant and it makes it easier to get in and out of the vehicle. Well worth it! :) Let us know what happens....

    1. You can buy a gas cap lock from GM if you feel someone might tamper with your gas cap. It locks with a key. But you should know that many cars have non-locking gas doors so the difference is only aesthetics.

    2. All the dealerships base their rebates on date of deliver and not date of sale. The rebate offer has this in writing - "Customer must take delivery of vehicle by Febuary X" or something close to that. I too had thought it was sales date and was corrected.

    3. I think the lastest GM rebate is $2002 or 0% financing, but your cannot combine them for some models. I think Edmunds has the rebates listed when you search for a new vehicle (on the bottom).

I went to my local Pontiac dealer to find out why the Price of the 2002 Aztek has increased, I had suggested the vehicle to a friend. It turns out that the price of the 2002 Aztek has been raised by $840 and the rebate has been reduced to $1500. The sales manager stated that GM has under estimated Aztek sales and have adjusted pricing more in accordance with demand.

    http://www.pontiac.com/pontiacjsp/aztek/pricing.jsp?source=lnav

  • montanafanmontanafan Member Posts: 945
Actually the price increase was only $300. This was for ones built after the middle of March, as I recall. The rebate went to $1,500 the beginning of February.
  • gm_litogationgm_litogation Member Posts: 168
Original pricing for the 02' Aztek was $19,995 for the base and $22,995 for an AWD. Now it's $20,845 and $23,845. So I was wrong in my math that is $850 in difference. Yes there was also a price hike in Feburary of $300, but with that price hike it brings the total "hike" to $850.

    Still a pretty good deal.
  • montanafanmontanafan Member Posts: 945
Destination charge is throwing you off. The $19,995 did not include destination of $550, the $20,845 includes it. And it is a great value when compard to a V6 Grand Am, a Grand Prix SE, or even a with a well equipped 2003 Vibe (and no Vibe rebate).

Does anyone have the cargo net system? I got the 1SD package on mine and it comes with the roll out cargo carrier. I'd actually might prefer the net system but wanted to see if it was easy to use and useful before I shell out another $80.

Hello to all - this is kind of long but please stay with me - I need some assistance.

I've been "wandering" around this site as I'm thinking about buying an Aztec (I am currently driving a Jeep Grand Cherokee). I looked all over the internet at various SUV's and they all looked the same - boring, then I saw the Aztec - wow! I can't really make up my mind what I think about how it looks, but I really don't care, what attracts me to it is how differrent it looks. I test drove a 2002 on Saturday and was quite impressed with the amount of thought the designers seemed to have put into every detail - they truely seem to have thought of everything. I reeeeaaaallly want one!

I'm concerned however, after reading a lot of the posted comments about various problems you seem to be having (the hyperextending doors really got me). I don't see people listing a lot of positives about the Tec. I'm guessing that if you were having major problems or really regretted your pruchase I'd see those comments listed - rather than assume I have some questions for anyone willing to take some time.

    1) Are you glad you bought your Aztec?
    2) Knowing what you know now about them - would you make the same purchase today?
3)What do you love & hate about it?
    4)How is it on gas?
5)I read an article somewhere that referred to the engine as "weak" and called this at best a "second class family vehicle" - what do you think about this - fact or sour grapes?
6)Anyone know how it handles in the mountains (climbing power)?
    7) Is it comfortable for long trips? I drive from Ohio to Florida frequently so comfort is important.
    8) AWD - fully loaded is currently listing at aroung $28,000 - is this fair or should I work them down? Are there still rebates available?
    9) Anything else you can think of, one way or the other?

Thanks in advance for your input. I found several sites where people are making nasty comments about the Tec but have never even seen one up close let alone driven one. I'd rather hear fact than opinion. Thanks agaain!

To those who do not remember me I am an early early adopter of the AZTEK. I purchased it in September of 2001.

I haunted these pages constantly.......... I'm back. To help this buyer.

    1) Are you glad you bought your Aztec?

I have owned my AZTEK for 19 months and have 20,000 miles on it. Long trips (Toronto- Florida). I still enjoy driving the AZTEK as much as the day I bought it. It's ride is still smooth and comfortable. Am I happy......... YES.

    2) Knowing what you know now about them - would you make the same purchase today?

Knowing what I know...... That the AZTEK I own is as close to flawless as any vehicle I have ever owned. I have had NO problems whatso ever.

The only issue is the Rear hatch door needed the drivers reset. ( When you popped the latch you would have to pop it twice to open it.) For the dollars I honestly feel there is not a better vehicle out there. ( Only vehicle I would rather have is the new 240 HP Honda Odysssey with 4 wheel disks....... This vehicle is the absolute best I have seen.... But my AZTEK is $13 K Less in Canadian dollars)

3)What do you love & hate about it?

Love the flexibility. Love the storage (wife has catering business). Love the comfortable ride...... Believe this. I left Florida at 7AM and drove straight thru to Toronto. Arrived at 4AM 21 straight hours. Could not have done that without the comfort of the AZTEK.

    Love....Love...Love the sound system.........

Love the nifty gadgets and storage spots. Love the reliability. Love the heating and cooling systems.

Hate....... I hate that people judge the vehicle before try ing it. Those that do try it love it. 4)How is it on gas?

    23 Mpg

5)I read an article somewhere that referred to the engine as "weak" and called this at best a "second class family vehicle" - what do you think about this - fact or sour grapes?

If I had my way I would luv a 220 HP engine....... But I would pay on Gas mileage. The vehicle is not the NEW Odyessy from Honda. But it delivers outstanding value.

6)Anyone know how it handles in the mountains (climbing power)?

Went through mountains in West Virginia....... It was great.

    7) Is it comfortable for long trips? I drive from Ohio to Florida frequently so comfort is important.

More comfortable and roomy then my brotherin laws Lexus Rx300

    8) AWD - fully loaded is currently listing at aroung $28,000 - is this fair or should I work them down? Are there still rebates available?

    Not sure......I paid Cdn dollars

    9) Anything else you can think of, one way or the other?

Great vehicle.......... My only comment is do look at the New Honda Odyssey....... Only vehicle that I find delivers better value.

I'd love to write a big long answer here, but I already have. I wrote a very detailed and lengthy review of my 2001 Aztek that I purchased in June 2001 at epinions.com. Please go to the following site to view it:

    http://www.epinions.com/content_59069402756

I give a very honest opinion of the pros and cons of my Tek. Yes, I would buy it again.

Please feel free to ask further questions or give comments on the review.

I have had my Aztek for one month now...just passed 5000 miles....not a typo...5000 miles in one month. This is a company vehicle so it is base plus tinted windows and cruise control. The seats are great...300+ mile days in and out of it are easy. The transmission does an annoying stutter when in traffic and you blip the gas. The Aztek has just enough power to be adeqaute. I regularly carry 200-300 lbs of parts and when merging onto a freeway I am just a tad nervous. Cornering is way below the image of the car though. I know it's an SUV but it corners worse than some minivans. Gas mileage is very nice...19-23 with a heavy foot and a great mix of highway and city. Only a few things annoy me....the windshield washer nozzles release too much fluid too fast...while going 60-70 I get a nice water show on my side windows. Would I pay money for an Aztek? Yes. The looks are growing on me. Here is a question...is the HUD on the Azteks Orange or Green? I would buy one optioned out though.....but I am in no hurry...I love my real car...1998 Cadillac Catera.

I found several sites where people are making nasty comments about the Tec...

    1. We got our 2001 Aztek FWD GT pretty much loaded in 8/01, and now have about 12k miles on it. My wife drives it most of the time, and carries our two little tykes in it a lot. She used to drive a 1998 S10 Blazer 2WD 4dr. We are both still very glad we got it! No significant disappointments to report.

    2. I would buy another Aztek if on the market today. In fact, I think the new ones are an even better deal now than new ones were last year. This is mostly because I think the newly painted trim is an upgrade in looks, and the 17" wheels are cool. But I like the looks of the 2001's too. One thing I admire about all Azteks is how distinctive and futuristic they look.

    3. My wife really likes the upgrade in the vehicle's ride, going from her Blazer (which she said was "trucky") to the almost carlike Aztek. The Aztek after all, comes from the same platform as the Grand Prix if I recall correctly. Our Aztek is pretty much loaded (6-disc, sunroof, leather, HUD, etc) and it's a joy having all those luxuries for a bargain price! This is the first time my wife has had leather, and the first car we've been able to afford a sunroof on. Things I don't like... very few, but I wish a supercharger was an option (keep in mind I also have a 305 hp 1999 Firebird Formula, so I'm a -little- jaded ;) ). My wife is quite satisfied with the power. She and I both agree it's an upgrade in pep vs. her 2wd Blazer. The only mech. problems we've had were an SES dash light (fixed by a PCM reflash) and the rear hatch not popping open via remote on first try (now fixed too). Neither she nor I have had a problem with the Hyper-extending Door thing. I guess to me it's just a matter of learning a vehicle... I don't fling the doors open on any of my cars... although I can see how some might have an issue since the front doors do "fall open" a little more than on other cars.

    4. Gas - we get about 19 around town and very low 20's on freeways when I drive - but keep in mind I'm a heinous leadfoot! :)

    5. Engine - as I said more power would be nice. However it moves out pretty good for what is essentially a minivan configuration. It's definitely quicker than our Blazer was. And don't forget, it's essentially the same engine as a Grand Am GT, so all the perf. parts those owners use can bolt right on to an Aztek! In fact we have a K&N drop-in filter for a GAGT in our Aztek. If performance is important to you, get the FWD not the AWD, it saves a couple hundred pounds off curb weight. FWD gives plenty of traction in snow.

    6. Mountains - haven't had it in real mountains, but it handles and moves out good on hills.

    7. An Aztek will spoil you to not want a lesser car on long trips. The interior is loaded with features and nice touches like reclining rear seats and four-way headrests. It's great for long trips. And ours has the tent, so we can stop anywhere and camp too! We have used the tent four times already and it's very handy.

    8. Pricing I don't know much about - but you can drive a hard bargain with most Azteks... look on the web first, such as the very accurate TMV estimator on edmunds.com. Plus check in at several dealers about the incentives underway now. We got $3k off our Aztek in factory incentives alone. DO NOT settle for anything close to sticker... put a worried look on your face and tell the salesman "gee I'm a little concerned about the styling"... ;)

    9. Speaking of styling... My wife has gotten several unsolicited comments in parking lots... ALL of them POSITIVE. Same from our neighbors. So many people on the web just look and see what the herd is saying about something, and then jump in instead of deciding for themselves. But I really liked the Aztek concept vehicle when it first came out at the auto shows, and was impressed how close the production Aztek was to the concept. Is it perfect? Obviously not. But they have already fixed the most apparent liability (unpainted cladding) and overall I really like how unique these things are. I'm tired of seeing four vehicle shapes wherever I go: sedans, pickups, boxy minivans and two-box SUV's. The Aztek really stands out! :)

    Hi folks -

My wife and I are about to order an Aztek to take advantage of the current "clear out the 2002's" offer, and are mulling options. Lots of positive comments on the sound system. But which one? I know this is subjective, but anyone have any comments on the base system compared to the 10-speaker Pioneer system, etc.? One has to obviously assume that the bigger system is better, but what's the magnitide of the gap?

Also, any comments on the cargo tray?

    Thks.

I LOOVE the cargo tray!!!!!!!! Best thing in the world to protect your back when loading heavier things into the trunk!

I don’t really know whether it was worthwhile to pay the higher price for the Pioneer system. I feel that the sound controls in the trunk are a waste of money! I would prefer them, and a headphone outlet like in the Buick RVD, in the back seat area (I have a teenage son who likes to listen to very unpleasant sounds he calls music), because I do not plan to “tailgate”. The sound of this system is very good, but so is the 6-speaker system in my other car!

For the case that you plan to get the version with the 17” wheels, I feel that the money that you could save from the radio would be better invested in a set of mud flaps. Those big wheels protrude out over the lower side of the vehicle and throw up quite a lot of dirt along the sides.

That is my humble opinion! However, I have to say that I like the vehicle a lot and would buy it again without hesitation, I am just a little disappointed with the rather low gas mileage that I get (20.5 average with 2/3 freeway driving at 65mph, and 1/3 residential with very few traffic lights or stop signs!)

There seem to be translation difficulties between my computer and the web!

&#8217 is supposed to be an Apostrophe

&#8220 and ” are Quotation marks and inch signs

The garbage is usually caused by Microsoft's SmartQuotes feature in Word. You can turn SmartQuotes off, or click the Edit button and fix it manually (you have 30 minutes to edit a post). Or you can compose offline in NotePad or other plain text editor.

All in all the Aztek continue to preform well.......frankly beyond my original expectations. I was somewhat paranoid when buying it being partial to Japanese.

    All in all great vehicle.

    All the best ... All

I just bought a new Aztek. The dealer wanted $1350.00 for a 7yr/70,000 mile extended warranty. I thought this was excessive, so I declined.

I found a company on the internet called Interstate National Dealer Services. Another name might be Warranty Direct.

Has anyone heard of this company, or does anyone have experience with it? They want $775.00 for a 7yr/75,000 mile extended warranty with a $100.00 deductible. This seems reasonable to me.

I keep my cars for a long time and, to be honest, I've had very good luck with my cars (Oldsmobile and Plymouth Reliant). Both cars went over 150,000 miles without a major breakdown and are still running. I wonder if I will have the same luck with the Aztek? If so, I don't really see the need for the extended warranty.

Lots of talk in the Finance/Warranty/Insurance Board or do a board search for "warranty."

Bought new in Oct 2001. Built 11/00

There was a leaking oil pan gasket at 2500 miles.
Dealer fixed twice, apologized and threw in free oil change.

Using Mobil 1 5W-30 plus AC DELCO PF52 oil filter.
Will switch to Mobil 1 10W-30 for summer months.
Desert heat here in Inland Empire climbs to 110 deg.

    Complaints: None, really.

Desires: More oomph. Say a 240-260 hp supercharger upgrade. Even though Power is sufficient for all needs.

Would buy another: YES!! This time with all-wheel drive and towing package-reason: improved handling. A higher power engine if available.

Regards to all AZTEK lovers and haters

Anyone know anything about a road rally for the Aztek owners this summer? I know they had one last summer and I was hoping that there would be one this year.

Is there a website or anything I can go to?
