I finally decided to get rid of my Firestone HT's that were on when I bought the vehicle new, selecting another brand name...only to return from eating lunch to discover THEY COULDN'T FIND the fourth tire that showed in their inventory on the computer! So they went ahead and put a comparable tire on (they said upgrad) and they were, you guessed it, FIRESTONE'S!

"Firestone Supreme Si" to be exact. They charged me the same price and acted like I was getting a deal...hmmm...$291 on the rim and out the door for 4 of 'em...including Warranty & free rotation, etc. I like 'em and all but part of me wonders if I got ripped off. ?

You may want to ask in the Tires, tires, tires discussion too - lots of knowledgeable folks hang out in there.

Well, I just got back from my first long trip (3600+ miles) in my '02 Tek. I have an AWD with all the trimmings (minus the sun/moonroof). We had our Tek fully loaded (4 adults, 1 small dog and lots of luggage and presents including a soft roof top carrier). I was amazed at how well it handled. Since I have the tow package, the automatic load leveling kicked in so that the Tek was balanced. Both my Mom and Dad drove part of the trip and couldn't get over the smooth ride and handling.

We did have one problem with it, however. It got broken into! They stole our gifts and my briefcase out of the back. What was interesting is that they were able to get in without setting off the alarm. And how did they do that? Well lets just say that they were able to trick the car into thinking that a key had been turned in the keylock. If you want more specifics, email me. I was absolutely shocked to find out that this is a known problem with most GM cars. My Tek was sold to me with a 'content theft deterrent' system. I was told that that meant that if the door was opened without the key or the keyless entry fob, that the alarm would sound. What I was not told was that it was so easy for a burglar to trick the vehicle into thinking that a key had been inserted and turned!

    Has anyone else experienced this?

Also, could someone tell me what the TSB (I think I have the acronym correct) is for the rear hatch not opening on first try?

Regardless of the theft, I still love my Tek!

    Loretta

Our Maintenance Guide doesn't show a hatch tsb for the '02 (but we don't always have all the summaries either). Try alldata.com or www.nhtsa.dot.gov/ unless someone pipes up in here.

    Bummer about the break-in...

The hatch trouble is a fairly common annoyance thing with the tek. Somewhere in the owners manual there is some recommended customer maintance suggestions for cleaning weather-stripping and latch lubrication which may alleviate or resolve problem. Also there may be alternative strut's that may help, I believe the part numbers are 10320592 10320593 (r&l)

My Tek is exactly one year old now and has almost 23,000 miles on the clock. And the hatch and clock problem are with me. I had the car in for repair, they exchanged the radio with a new one that also has a slow clock (any news out there on what to do about this?). The worked at the hatch twice and it still does not work properly. I think the hatch is temperature related since it works at temperatures above freezing and not when it is colder, stronger shocks might help, but it will also be harder to close the thing. the shop told me to check back with them because they hope that GM will come out with a fix for this.

These are the only two problems that I have with the vehicle, which means, it is very reliable and low maintenance. I still like it a lot and would buy it again.

I am very interested in the Aztek for my wife. She likes the appearance so that is not an issue.

Edmunds doesn't like it for the following reasons:
    1. cheap interior (what if you get the leather package?)
    2. poor visibility (can the rear spoiler be removed?)
    3. excessive body roll (would larger tires help?)
    4. floating over smooth pavement
    5. drop-off in power after you get going. (There are a few fixes to increase power.)
    What do you think?

We test drove it a month ago and it was better than I expected. The engine though did seem to be straining somewhat.

We have a very steep driveway going down from the street. We live in the snowbelt in New England. Does its AWD system have enough "mojo" to get it up a hill or do I need a 4wheel drive system with a low range.

For the money ($3,000 rebate) and interior room its seems unbeatable. They are also reliable from the info I have heard.

We are also considering the Pilot and 4Runner but they are much more money with no rebates. Also we are interested in Escape/Tribute but they have had major problems. Edmunds says their engines are very loud and they have small gas tanks.
  • rrsafetyrrsafety Member Posts: 38
Of the AWDs available, you get a lot for your money. Almost all reviewers always complain about engines not having enough performance powers (unless you get a performance auto). If you look at the other reviews, lots of folks complain about the other cars too.

If you value your hard earned money, don't do it. I bought one about 27 months ago and have over 50K miles. While I realize that is a lot of miles for such a short time, I have had this piece of junk in the shop about every 3 or 4 months. I have blown 5 or more bulbs (the head lights are quite hard to get to), replaced a gasket, and am right now getting a 3rd computer board put in (that's right number 3). Since I didn't opt for the extended warranty, I am out of pocket for all of these very costly repairs. This doesn't even include the new brakes and tires I bought before we had 40k on the car.

On the ugly subject, I think it is so ugly it's cute, but I'm ready to drive it in the lake for all of the problems I'm experiencing.

Anyone else out there with high miles and even higher lack of satisfaction?
  • rrsafetyrrsafety Member Posts: 38
You're lucky your brake pads lasted 40K. That is above average for most brake pads.
As for tires, that has nothing to do with the car. Aztek uses the same tires as alot of other autos.
Bad luck on the computer board. There are folks who buy from Dell or Gateway whose motherboards barely last a week, so its unlikely to be a Pontiac problem. Just my two cents..

I bought my used 01AWD w/tow pkg not knowing a thing about the vehicle. I had been driving a Ranger 4x4 for 5 years and drive Oregon coastal mountain roads. At first I couldn't believe how easy it was to drive compared to all other vehicles I'd driven. It's a very smooth ride, very stable on the road (on hairpin curves too). The gearing and the tranny are in perfect snyc-absolutely awesome! Plenty power on onramps and up long inclines in the passing lane at 65mph even when loaded with 4 adults and music equipment ie PA,amps etc. The brakes are smooth as butter! Drove home 120 mi one night in a NW rainstorm-it just plowed right through standing and running water like nothing. I never spin out on my slippery drive which is a 45 degree angle, unlike the PU which I had to put in low range 4WD to get up. My husband loves it and he's hard to please when it comes to safety, utility, and functionality. He's an ex logger and is used to working and hunting the backroads. However, it doesn't have high clearance like other SUVs but then it's not tippy either like other SUVs. It's very stable in turns. I haven't had problems at 12,000 mi-knock on wood.Edmunds didn't like the interior plastic and exterior plastic cladding which I really like. Now, I see the Honda Element has borrowed so much from the Aztek and it's called innovative! GO FIGURE! All in all a wonderful vehicle that was given a Bum Rap. Judy

Visiblity- it is for certain unusual (black strip w/spoiler) and takes a little bit to get used to it, but all that glass is very nice when you consider the total visibilty (backing up is easy), and it has the unusual ability to partialy block the headlights of following vehicle at night (kinda nice). Body roll, its a pretty big high-profile vehicle, gonna have some of that anyway I think. Float, part of the price you pay for comfortable ride. Power is adequate, but it will downshift on hilly terrain like in Vt mountains (may have to watch tack to see it happening), its not going to out-race anything. From discussions elsewhere most people are happy even with FWD and winter driving on ( I think) stock tires. Ours is AWD and I have dedicated winter tires on it, and so far have encountered zero problems with weather, I am not at all sure if AWD has ever kicked in except when I forced it to by intentionaly spinning the front wheels to launch it up out of a muddy field. We have had ours for a year and 18k miles on it with zero problems other the the sticky hatch and slow clock.

    The Buick Centieme

Would make sense that the Aztek would be similar in appearance to this vehicle seeing how the RDV and the Aztek are based on the same frame.

It has been a long time since I last visited this forum. For those of you who are seriously considering buying an Aztek, I urge you to please reconsider. I used to own a 2001 fully loaded AWD Aztek GT. It was, to put it mildly, the worst car I have ever owned. I fought with GM for 6 months before they finally agreed to buy it back.
In one year, I had the head gaskets replaced, all 6 cylinders in the engine were replaced, a new engine block was put in, the air conditioning broke, the heated seats broke, the rear hatch broke, the car had a serious engine temp fluctuation which was never fixed, even with the new engine. In addition to these problems, the windshield cleaner jets broke, the keyless entry worked intermittently, and the car did not have child seat anchors as advertised. Add to that one of the worse crash ratings in its class. Moreover, I never saw above 15 mpg, despite the advertised 22 mpg.
I am not one to favor one auto manufacturer over another. I do not subscribe to brand loyalty. But I can tell you, that this experience has made me rather skeptical of GM quality. I bought a Ford Explorer Sport Trac with the reimbursement check I got from GM. It now has 8000 miles on the clock, and not a single problem. I love it. I just feel sorry for the poor sap that bought my Aztek second hand.

P.S. For those die-hard GM owners out there, please do not defend GM by saying at least they did the right thing and bought this lemon back. They did not do the right thing. It took 6 months of arguing with the owner of the dealership, the GM Fleet Manager, the Fleet Managers boss, and countless calls to GM customer service before they reluctantly agreed to buy it back. One of the reasons I finally got GM to buy back the car was because their fleet manager screwed up. On one of our numerous service visits, he offered to buy back the car. Luckily, this offer was written on our work invoice. GM tried to weasel their way out of it. They said it wasn’t legal. They even fired the Fleet Manager, and instructed the new fleet manager to deny our claim. I just kept on going up the food chain and never relented. Finally the owner of the dealership and GM representatives met and decided to buy back my car in order to get rid of me.

sorry you got a bad one, one of the few we have heard about. Hope you continue to have better luck with the explorer and not end up on the 'perpetual explorer woes' topic

On Edmunds cool site I've gotten a TMV price for an Aztek that I've seen at a dealership. I'm trying to figure how much less than the TMV I should negotiate for -- if I decide on Aztek. Right now Pontiac is offering $3000 "cash back" through 2/28/02. I am assuming that the "cash back" should be deducted from the TMV, and NOT from the MSRP. Is that(TMV-$3k)the very lowest price I should shoot for on the Aztek, or given its slow-moving pace, is an even lower price possible?

This is all new to me, and in light of these "incentives" I'm unsure about calculating them. Help with this will be greatly appreciated. :)
  • lennxlennx Member Posts: 73
I was out looking at vehicles here in southern New England. One delear said he does not stock Azteks anymore. They will locate or order one.

Other dealers seem to have one or two at most.

I would suspect Aztek is not long for this world

laboheme - I would recommend no higher than invoice and deduct the rebates from that.
  • kermitekkermitek Member Posts: 120
gregeaston - I love the Centieme, and hope the next Aztek or its followon is similar! That car is cool. I agree it's in the same size class.

johncos - sorry you got a bum car. Happens with all makes. Quality is critically important nowadays. But if quality is all that matters (as opposed to also considering value, versatility, unmistakable styling and feature content), you chose poorly in jumping to Ford. Based on this JDPower survey of initial quality, http://www.usatoday.com/money/autos/2001-05-17-jdpower.htm#rank , new Fords have an average of 162 defects per 100 vehicles in first 90 days, while Pontiacs have 167... hardly a difference worth switching brands over. Hope you are happy with your less-versatile Ford... because the quality odds are not in your favor to any significant degree. Anyone who doubts how happy Aztek owners are with their fun-machines should note that the Aztek recently won JDPower's APEAL award as well: http://www.gm.com/cgi-bin/pr_display.pl?2549

laboheme - Normally I've found the edmunds TMV to be pretty accurate with used cars, but anything is possible when buying new. Ask another dealer with a similar Aztek for their best price, and get a bidding war going. That will reveal their true bottom line.

lennx - Don't know where you live, but all the Pontiac dealers around Detroit have at least a couple Azteks available from what I can tell. Try a few different zip codes in http://www.gmbuypower.com ...

Update on our Aztek: Still running great... had a few things replaced under warranty, including battery, console cooler (handle was coming loose and became clunky) and hydraulic struts for liftglass and hood. Other than that, runs like a bandit, 30k miles so far!

Also - anyone in Detroit metro area looking for a perfect set of the 2001 Aztek GT three-spoke 16" aluminum wheels, post here. They also still have the original puncture-seal tires, but only have about 3-5k miles to go before they will be on the wear bars.

I haven't posted here in a while (never under this username), but would like to give an update on the Aztek I drive. Over the last 10 months the SUV has gone from 12 miles to 38000 miles with zero problems. I idle alot, floor it often, carry 400-500 lbs of cargo daily and the thing has never broken. I have had to call roadside assistance 3 times.......only to UNLOCK the car for me. This is a fleet vehicle hence no keyless entry. There are 40 or so other fellow employees with Azteks in DFW and no problems other than accidents have been reported (1 totaled the second day they had it and several fender benders). The highest mileage I know of is 49K miles. I think I need new brakes though, and the tires are getting low. There has been a parts problem when those who has accidents took their vehicles in to be repaired though. Some Azteks were out of service for 3-4 weeks. Anyone know where I can get a cheap replacement cooler/console? I took mine out for a roadtrip (perfect size for the bus to the casino) and lost it. I would buy an Aztek if I needed a vehicle this big. Reliablility has been amazing and the total quailty is also very high. For those who are wondering what company would buy Azteks for fleet (in the tune to 1000+). Next time you purchase something anywhere in the Nation (al), look down at the Cash Register. :) being used to add up the items.

Is the 03 Aztek FWD a reliable car ?

I was going for the 03 CR-V but after test driving the 03 FWD Aztek I changed my mind, I loved all the features of the Aztek !

I haven't owned a pontiac and am worried about the reliability of the Aztek. All I speak too are discourging me from getting the Aztek and pontiac in general. I don't care about resale value and am planning to keep the car I get for at least +100,000

Any commnents and experinces with the Aztek are appriciated

In April of 2001 I purchased a yellow Aztek GT AWD. In October of last year, HSBC, the company I am working for, relocated me from New York City to Buffalo. Almost every weekend I am driving my Aztek back and forth, Grand Island to New York City, 840 miles round trip.

My car has almost 32,000 miles on the odometer. So far, it is running great. The minor problems I had were busted headlight and rear stop light bulbs, lift gate door at the back and misalligned driver door. All of these were fixed by the dealer under warranty.

In four months of my stay in Buffalo, I have put almost 10,000 mile on the odometer.

The oil change is done every 3 to 4 thousand miles. The pcv valve, fuel filter were replaced at 28,000 miles. The K&N air filter was put in after 9,000 miles.

I am looking forward to be with my yellow Aztek for a long long long time.

Azteks are well made in the Mexican plant and are reliable. If I liked the looks I would have bought one. I'm hoping it will look better to me when they give it new skin in a year or two.

I am a writer of a small auto feature for a major business daily and am looking for CEOs, VPs and other execs who are drivers of this vehicle to 1) share their experiences of ownership with me for the column and 2)be willing to get their name mentioned in the paper as a driver. I do like my Aztek, but that one annoying problem--the sticky rear latch--was aggravating the heck out of me. You hit the rear latch button, you hear the clicking sound of the tailgate opening, you get out of the vehicle and go to open the gate, and IT WON'T OPEN! You then press the button several more times, and finally, it opens. Took it to the dealer for this, and the service guy actually looked me in the eye and claimed he had never heard of this issue (it's all over the web!) Of course, when I brought the vehicle in, the latch opened perfectly every time! "No trouble found," read the service order. As I backed out of the service driveway, I tried it one more time--ALAS, it really does stick! I ran inside to get the service guy, who came out to see for himself. I hit the button, and it worked perfectly. "But honestly, it wasn't working right a second ago." Tried it again--it worked perfectly. By this time, the service guy thought I was nuts. As I went back inside, he tried to appease me by promising to order a new latch mechanism. "You'll call me when it comes in?" Sure, he said. That was a month ago, and I haven't heard back (Classic Pontiac, Willoughby, Ohio). And since that time, it has aggravated me to NO END. I caught myself muttering nasty expletives about my Aztek when time after time, the freakin' thing just wouldn't open! Finally, I grabbed an old can of WD-40, and sprayed each of the three latch contact points (one on each side, and the one in the middle). And since I've done that, it genuinely works PERFECTLY every time. NO WHY COULDN'T THE DEALER FIGURE THAT ONE OUT?

I own a 2003 Aztek (ISB package). The owner's manual states I can program some of the vehicle's features even without a Driver Information Center.
Have been unable to get it to work- Is it possible, or is the owner's manual in error?

    Hi all,
I am looking for a new vehicle. I currently own a 94 Honda Passport 127,000 miles. I would like to start travelling with my 3 greyhounds so I need to have room for all three of them.
I was looking at the Aztek, a friend from work has one. I am not impressed with the looks but that I can live with.
I would like your HONEST feedback pros and cons on the Aztek. I am also looking at the Honda CR-V and the Saturn VUE. I have done the comparison on all three but want to hear from you.
    Thanks,

I am having a hard time with the Manik brush guard and the external EZ PASS. That front bar is blocking the sensor, making the EZ PASS thing unreadable. I have not thought of a way yet to get around with this. Anybody out there with the same problem.

The car I am driving is a yellow 2001 Pontiac Aztek GT AWD.

    >Finally, I grabbed an old can of WD-40, and sprayed each of the three latch contact points (one on each side, and the one in the middle).

WD40 is a cleaner, not a lubricant. It began life as WATER DISPLACEMENT FORMULA 40. Now I know what the can says, but its mostly kerosene. Good cleaner, good at displacing water, not worth a damn for lubricating. It dries in no time.

Use silicone, spray penetrating oil, or even a little engine oil on your finger to lube it.
  • steverstever Guest Posts: 52,454
I was thinking that since the latch seemed to be sticking, a good cleaning was the fix. A lube now seems like a good idea, so long as a very scant amount is used. Wouldn't want to attract any more dirt to it.

Well I can also vouch for the sticking latch issue. I have a base Aztek (which is quite loaded) and have to use the button or key to pop the latch. I open the hatch at least 10-15 times a day (my Aztek is a company truck and I use it to haul 200-400 lbs of parts daily). Many times I just need to drop something off or check on something in the hatch. I hit the button, hear the noise but 2/3 times it doesn't open. I have resorted to putting a spare key in my Employee Badge holder. I have 39,000 miles on my Aztek now (in just 11 months) hence warranty work is out of the question. Also since new the drivers door has been misaligned (doesn't appear to be 100% closed even when its slammed). The door could have been fixed, but I need my truck everyday. Oh well....I would still buy one if I needed something this big.

I have had my 2001 Aztek loaded base model for almost two years and we love it. Great ride, interior features and room. Gas mileage 22-28 mpg. Have had only minor hvac problems previously, but at 35,000 miles a bigger problem has started. Anytime the heater is on and directional knob is turned so hot air goes to the floor only, heat is still leaking out of the a/c vents into your face. This is not comfortable when your feet are freezing but your face is hot. After much discussion with dealer, (he first tried to say they all do that), but when a new Aztek was tried, it worked correctly. Dealer ordered a new vent door component, and after it was installed, which by the way took 2 weeks, the problem is still not fixed and dealer is at a loss.
Has anyone else had this problem??? Help!!!
  • steverstever Guest Posts: 52,454
Can you hear the vent door open or close when you move the directional knob? I had a similar problem umpteen years ago with a Toyota and it turned out a cable had come undone. Sounds like your dealer isn't too swift....

i almost just purchased an Aztek. yes, almost. i love the vehicle, don't get me wrong, but after reading a lot of your posts on various mechanical issues, and mostly because it seemed there are really not alot of standard features on the Aztek, i opted for a Vibe GT instead.

i test drove an Aztek and also the Vibe last year in late 2002. THEN, i liked the Aztek better, hands down. in 2003, however, it was just the reverse. the Aztek just didn't do it for me. they have changed some things in 2003 model and i wasn't really happy with the changes. i liked the way the vehicle looked on the outside, but it just didn't do it for me. (gosh! i feel like a traitor!!!)

i am quite pleased with the Vibe. if any of you out there are agonizing over this decision as i did, i suppose it depends on many issues. one thing that really helped me was that i did a "cost to own" which you can find on EDMUNDS' site. another thing was that the Vibe has so many more standard features. i sat and wondered, why would ANYONE buy a Vibe when the Aztek is only about 2K more? seemed like a drop in the bucket when you're shelling out 25K or thereabouts. but i then found out how many standard features and especially the safety features which are important to me.

just my 2 cents' worth. i still love the Aztek and wish i could have bought one, but now i just love my Vibe better. lol thanks for listening.
  • dindakdindak Member Posts: 6,632
I think the are both good vehicles. The Vibe is a much better looking vehicles IMO, but the Aztek is larger and more like an SUV. I don't think the Aztek really has any major issues, it's just that a lot of people dismiss it because it's odd looking. Now that a number of other odd looking vehicles have come to market (ie Honda Element), The Aztek is just not really that different anymore.
  • gregeastongregeaston Member Posts: 128
Just wait 'til you see the 2005 model...

If you like the Vibe, you'll love the 2005.
  • rrsafetyrrsafety Member Posts: 38
Nobody should be paying around 25k for the Aztec. The AWD Aztec with Basic Plus options had been discounted with rebates by $3K, also it was selling just about at invoice. That means a comfortably appointed AWD Aztec was selling for about $20K (only $19K if you had GM points.)
Also, folks should know that compared to the Vibe, the Aztek is much bigger. If you have dogs and kids the Vibe is just too small. Although I do like the look of the Vibe.
  • kritta16kritta16 Member Posts: 20
hey i will certainly agree - if you have 2 kids at least, don't get the Vibe. i only have one child, so it is ok for me. i still love the aztek though! cannot wait to see the 2005!!
  • exzurexzur Member Posts: 166
I have read too many negative comments on the Aztek, mostly on this site, remember, "PONTIAC AZTEK, the ugliest car ever bulit." Yet I still decided to get one.

Again, I have said this before, I bought my 2001 yellow AZTEK because, to my eyes, the car is beautiful. At that time, I did not even consider if the car is reliable? If the car will fall apart in a year or so. I love the looks of the car, that's why I go for it.

The odometer of my Aztek is displaying almost 34,000 miles. So far so good.

If your heart is on the Aztek, why get the other the car? Is it because, people thinks, the car is ugly? Reliablity? I don't think so.

The coming out of the Element, and similar cars to follow, will prove this group of people wrong.

Aztek looks better to me now than it did when it came out. I'm still not sure I would get one, but I think I could consider it given it's reliability is good as is it's function. Base Aztek with discounts is about the same $$ as an Element so you certainly get better bang for the buck with the Aztek also.

Hello, it has been a long time since I posted here. Anyway, I am at about 45K miles and am just loving my Tek.

For any of you debating the value or versatility of this vehicle, let me tell you that it is the most versatile vehicle on the planet. I have hauled all sorts of things with it. Not to mention camped in it and just generally enjoyed it.

For those of you who have read posts here and on other boards regarding problems, keep in mind that issues brought up on boards like these seem magnified because of the type of group that it is. Is there a persistent, common hatch issue - yes. However, that is really minor compared to some of the issues of other vehicles.

If you want to know what owning an Aztek is about, check out the 2003 NE Rally and its website http://www.aztekrally.org where you will find a whole passle of owners who love the thing. Also you will see Greg Easton's name a few times.

"The people who buy Azteks shower their vehicles with a devotion and passion that would be the envy of any car company."
