    The sales are up, so the Aztek might stick around a little while longer. In 2005 or so, it will be renamed and restyled. I hope this will be delayed as I LOVE THE AZTEK's STYLING. I like it better 2002+ because the body cladding is off. I don't like body cladding.

    At over 45,000 miles on my 2001 Pontiac Aztek, the AirCon stop blowing cold air. I had it fixed by David Pontiac dealership in Niagara Falls, NY.
    The cost surprised me,

            Condenser 9.190 ----> $495.18
            R134 Ref 8.800 ----> 32.70
            Oil ----> 2.50
            Labor ----> 435.00
            Tax ----> 80.06
                                    -------
            Total ----> $1,050.44

    When I question the labor of $435, the service rep say, It took almost six hours to get the job
    done. It appears to them a stone fragment damage the condenser, that, even if my car mileage was under 36,000 the warranty would have not covered it.

    I am very happy with this car, but questions still lingers, Did I pay too much to get my car AC fixed? Does it really takes six hours to replace an AC condenser?

    Any comments?

    If it was damaged by a rock being thrown up it should have been covered by your automobile insurance policy.
  • fedlawmanfedlawman Member Posts: 3,118
    Me and a couple other RDV owners over at our thread had the same problem.

    There is a manufacturing defect with the mount and the fix (under original factory warranty) included a newly designed mount to correct the problem.

    Obviously, GM is aware of this manufacturing defect (they modified the mount, after all). I think GM should pick up the tab for your bill...

    Well, the time has come to change from the 95 Aerostar XLT to a new vehicle. We are looking at a 2001 Aztek. INFO: Moonroof, AC, 6CD Changer, Cruise, Power drivers Seat, etc.

    I have noticed that the drivers side door rubs against the Fender ever so slightly. Its a spot about half an inch. Any ideas why? perhaps an accident that pushed everything back? ALso noticed that the seat rails are kinda rusty, is this normal?

    Dealer is asking $11,900

    Anything else I should ask about, look for, before, signing the deal?
  • kenymkenym Member Posts: 405
    The Rendezvous and Aztek both have heavy front doors and are subject to be blown open past the normal stop on a windy day and tend to bend the door hinge. Some cause enough damage to have the hinge replaced and the front fender to be painted.

    Perhaps this one wasn't as bad and could be bent back without going to a body shop for costly repairs

    Makes me feel good to hear from you. How are you doing? By the way, I am bringing back the car to the dealer tomorrow. Problem is every time I switch on the fan, it always blow cold air. Looks like the A/C switch is no good.

    If you could, please show me where to get those info about that manufacturing defect with the mount and the fix, etc. I'll appreciate it very much.

    I'll show the manufacturing defect documents to DAVID PONTIAC in NIAGARA FALLS, NY.

    Thanks.

    About half and a year ago, the half way open driver side door of my Aztek was blown wide open by strong wind. The door was misalligned and I notice strong noise coming from that window on high speed driving.

    However, this problem was fixed by the dealer under warranty.

    revitup, My 2001 Pontiac Aztek seat rails has no rust. I don't think that kinda rusty seat rail is normal.

    Bought my Fusion Orange Rally Tek 6/30/2003...love the car.....traded in a 98 Jimmy and 99 Voyager. But last week (on day 10) I noticed the temp guage really fluctuating..never seen anything like that before in my life. It never overheated but it came darn close while idling in traffic. I let it sit and idle in my driveway for 1/2 hour over te weekend and the fans never kicked on even though the temp guage neared the redline. The wife dropped it off today (we had to argue to get her a loaner) and, yep...you guessed i...the fan unit isn't working. They should have the part in this afternoon.....I hope to all goodness I don't have a lemon!!!!

    My name is Peter and the wife and I bought our Fusion Orange Rally Tek (lowered front end, 17 in chrome plated wheels, XM Radio, Sunroof) 6/30/2003. We both love it but the bad news is that it is in for service today (7/14) because the cooling fans are not working. I love this car/truck/whatever and pray that I do not have a lemon. We have put approx 6oo mile on it so far and have a road trip to Charlotte, NC (from Pittsburgh, PA) coming up so I need to find any issues with it right now.

    I own a 2002 Aztek and I've noticed since I've owned it that the thermostat reads very hot, almost red line, in traffic. I've brought it to the dealer several times and they have yet to give me an explanation or a fix. I've already gone through a head gasket because of this problem and now my warranty is up. Does anyone know if this is a normal reading on the thermostat or if I'm being screwed by the dealer?
  • ray80ray80 Member Posts: 1,655
    As long as it doesn't go into the red zone you should be ok. Just as a check you might want to do as pjmorgan22 did, to see if fan's are working when it gets warm.
  • ray80ray80 Member Posts: 1,655
    Hopefully that will be the only problem you find. We have had our 2001 since Dec 2001 and haven't had any real issues with it (other then hatch sticking in cold weather). We will be taking a road trip down to Allentown,Pa for the 2003 rally next weekend. www.aztekrally.org
  • jcheney2jcheney2 Member Posts: 2
    I took the advice of checking out when the fan goes on and here's what I found:

    The Thermostat gauge is divided into 5ths, with the last 5th being the red zone. My gauge goes almost up to the red line, then the fan kicks in for a slight moment and drops the gauge down to beginning of the 4/5 line, and then the fan shuts off. So after the fan has done its thing, my gauge is still reading well above the "Normal" line. Do you think this is anything to worry about. I'm being cautious about this because every other car I've ever owned, the gauge never went past the normal line unless there was a problem.
  • pjmorgan22pjmorgan22 Member Posts: 4
    After the repair mine sites two marks from the hot mark pretty regularly...no fluctuation. Before the fan replacement the temp would fluctuate allot. AT max (sitting in traffic) it always hit that line just before overheating and I would get a rough idle. (The vehicle has an overheat protection that will alter the motor performance when overheating so I assumed that was kicking in.)

    They replaced the fan unit on mine and I notice it kicking in pretty often to maintain that constant temp. The repair was approx $200 (but was covered by my warranty).
  • pjmorgan22pjmorgan22 Member Posts: 4
    We were going to do the rally but my wife is pregnant (baby girl due in Nov) and we have a road trip to Charlotte next month so I did not want to chance an additional road trip. I hope to get to the rally in 2004.

    I wish I had the info in writing. All I have is my invoice that shows the condenser was replaced due to a leak.

    I'll add my e-mail address to my personal profile so I can scan and e-mail the invoice to you...if you want.

    BTW, I mostly hang out in the sedan forums these days since, after much research, I finally bought a new car (yes, I still have the RDV).
  • exzurexzur Member Posts: 166
    To my understanding, the condenser of your RDV was replaced under warranty. Too bad, the condenser of my Aztek leaks after over 45,000 miles of driving. Also, according to the dealer, which I have not seen it, the damage was as if it was hit by stone fragments. Thanks for your reply.

    Are there other incidents of these A/C condenser leaking?

    After spending $1,050 to replace the condenser, there is still a problem. The A/C stays on while the engine is running. The only way to turn the A/C off is to switch off the ignition.

    My concern is, if I don't get the A/C switch fixed right away, would it damage other parts of the car? What is the effect if I turn the heater on while the A/C is still running?

    Any comments would be appreciated.
  • fedlawmanfedlawman Member Posts: 3,118
    There are at least two other edmunds poster that had the same leak. In fact, I think one of them was told it was a rock too!

    Don't buy it...get GM to cover it.

    As I was driving to work this morning, the ANTI-LOCK and AWD DISABLE indicators on the dashboard lit.

    I checked the brakes and the condition of the car. Still look good to me.

    ONSTAR diagnose the car and ask me to call the dealer for the meaning of code C0051.

    Anybody knows what code C0051 means?
  • exzurexzur Member Posts: 166
    I did what ONSTAR said and called two PONTIAC dealerships in the Buffalo, Nigara Falls area.
    Both won't give me the meaning of code C0051. They want me to bring in the car for a $75 diagnostic check.

    I called ONSTAR again and insisted for the meaning of the code. They don't have the information, I was told.

    It does not make sense to me, that ONSTAR has this sophisticated system to read a car code hundreds or thousands of miles away, yet they can't or won't give the meaning of the code.
  • montanafanmontanafan Member Posts: 945
    Makes sense to me. All OnStar has access to in the car is the fault code. They are not mechanically trained, so they are not given more infomation, or it is possible the infomation they have on the Aztek is lacking detail. C0051 idicates that a wheel speed sensor read 0 mph while the other three were reading something above 0 mph. I am told the service manual dosen't specify which speed sensor, but since it is the highest of the four codes, a guess might be the right rear.
  • steverstever Guest Posts: 52,454
    Maybe AutoZone or one of the other parts stores that read codes for free could interpret the code?

    Steve, Host
  • exzurexzur Member Posts: 166
    They don't have to be mechanically trained. All they have to do is read the meaning of the code.

    That same day going back home, when I turned on the ignition, AWD DISABLE and ANTI-LOCK indicators are not lit anymore. It went off by itself.

    If it comes back, I'll take the car to the dealer for a $75 diagnostic check.
  • exzurexzur Member Posts: 166
    I brought the car to the dealer yesterday. They check on why the A/C is always on problem. They said the Body Control Module(BCM) is not picking up the A/C switch signal.

    To replace the BCM will cost me $525. I turned it down. After 30 minutes, the service guy called. He said, since I spent a lot money to fix the A/C, they will warranty the parts and all I have to pay is the labor. The BCM replacement cost drop to $235. Shall I go for it?

    Steve, when I get the chance, I will go to Auto Zone or any parts store to find out what fault code C0051 means.

    I still can't figure out why ONSTAR can read the fault code and not the meaning.
  • steverstever Guest Posts: 52,454
    Personally, I'd go for the BCM fix.

    You saw Montanafan's post a minute before mine the other day, didn't you? He interpeted the code as a speed sensor.

    Steve, Host
  • exzurexzur Member Posts: 166
    After driving hundreds of miles(Grand Island to NYC and back over the weekend, etc.), the ANTI-LOCK and AWD DISABLE screens did not lit again.

    Had I gone to the dealer and let them do the diagnostic check, I would have wasted $75 plus tax. Thanks Montanafan for the C0051 meaning.

    I still think, ONSTAR should have provided this information. I will send an email to ONSTAR about my C0051 experience. I don't think they will publish my story in the next issue of their magazine. This is a case, "When you need ONSTAR, ONSTAR disappears".

    Definitely I will go for the BCM fix. Thanks Steve.

    I haven't posted in a while. I have a 2002 Aztek base model (though still pretty loaded up) that I use as a company car. There are at least 30 of them running around Dallas/Ft. Worth and haven't had one break down yet. We have had a few accidents including when a driver clipped the back of an 18 wheeler going 65 MPH. The Aztek rolled more than a few times. The drive didn't walk away, but was on a stretcher and is still alive. My Aztek is fine. Only issues were the wind blowing the door open. The repair bill was a spookily high $1300. Glad it's not my car. I had new front brakes and all the tires replaced around 35,000. The only thing I would change are the seats. I have had this truck since March 2003, averaging 800 miles or so a week. My back has started aching lately.....assume the foam is wearing down. I am only 26....I hope I am not wearing down yet!
  • exzurexzur Member Posts: 166
    The dealer warrantied the parts. I paid $243.57 for the labor.

    I almost bought another Aztek. The dealer has offered $50 over invoice, and $4,000 rebate for
    a 2003 model good up to Sepetmber 3.

    My GM card earning is almost $1,500.

    I think buyng another car is justified, because I am driving to NYC and back to Grand Island(840 miles) almost every weekend.

    I do not want to put too much strain on my yellow Aztek and have another expensive repair eventually.

    I am thinking of another Aztek or the Vibe.

    Any advice?
  • steverstever Guest Posts: 52,454
    It takes a big repair to exceed a car payment. Even a tranny replacement can be done for 5 or 6 payments. Pay 'em off and drive 'em forever.

    But you are doing more miles in a week than I'm doing in a month.

    Hello, I am so glad I found this site have a couple of questions and was not sure where to look for answers. We just purchased a 2001 Aztek 45,000 miles on it. I have wanted one since they came out, finally convinced my husband. It runs great so far....just a couple of things not sure about. It appears that there is supposed to be a feature that when you push the down window button for the drivers side it will automatically roll down instead of having to hold it for it to roll down, but ours does not. Is this a standard feature, has anyone experienced the same problem? Also the back air vents just spin freely, there is no way to point them and have them stay in one direction, can someone tell me if there is something that holds it in place that maybe we are missing? Thanks for all your advise, we were able to fix the latch problem with the earlier post suggesting to lubricate it.
  • ray80ray80 Member Posts: 1,655
    I'm not sure if it is standard, but if it is on yours, hit the down side of switch twice in a row quickly and it should go down all the way . Hope this helps

    I purchased an 04 fusion orange Aztek Rally Edition yesterday. I would have never thought I would ever buy an orange car. But when I saw the color I just loved it. The main thing I wanted was the "Eye Cue" feature and love that too.
  • buzzbo99buzzbo99 Member Posts: 111
    Has anyone purchased the Aztek Seat Protection seat covers? Can you tell me about the material? The parts person at my dealership has never seen them. The brochure says they are made of a polyester knit fabric and are water-resistant. I need something that will completely protect the leather. I live in Texas where it is very hot and humid. The salt in the perspiration is really tough on the upholstery I was thinking about getting some of those "wet suit" type covers, but would prefer the ones made to fit if they will do what I need.

    I have seen the feature called "Eye Cue" and "Heads Up". It is the feature where your speed, turn signal indicators, and radio channels are projected onto the windshield where you do not have to take your eyes off the road to check things on the dash. I think it is a great safety feature and also love being able to adjust my steering wheel anywhere I want without any problem with it covering the speedo from my view.

    the insurance co was waiting to see if gm is at fault. We are suppose to be going to dealer to get a check for what we have in car minus state taxs($1500). No wants to help on a rental for that 50 day period. Did not have rental coverage on insurance policy. GM & dealer lost a customer for if nothing else then being unhelpful and blaming the problems on us and take what we are giving you or get noting

    Hi, Has anyone experienced their lights slightly flickering at night? I've noticed my head lights and interior light, when I had one on, flickering at the same time. Thanks.

    Have noticed my headlights flicker on some occasions. Thought it was just my eyesight for a while. Hadn't noticed interior lights dim, but may also happen.
     Anyone have idea on cause of this?
