    Hello,

Mine is a 2001 Pontiac Aztek with 27,000 miles on it. Just out of warranty. I took it in to a third party mechanic because the air conditioner quit cooling. You guessed it, the condenser is cracked. The mechanic said there is a technical bulletin out on it and a new bracket design. He suggested I take it back to the dealer.

I contacted the dealer and they said to bring it in and they would work out a deal with me. Since they didn't say what kind of a deal I was wanting to know the telephone number to call GM about this.

I will say that I have enjoyed my Aztek and use it all the time (the mileage doesn't give the whole story). But I find it hard to believe we are all having the same problem on a car that is still relatively new.

    Hello,

This is just a follow to my post yesterday and a question for all other Aztek owners. First, the dealer has agreed to install a new condenser and bracket for $250.00. Given that I have heard anything from $770 to $1000 for this fix, I think I'm satisfied with it. I do have a copy of the technical bulletin for this defect.

Also, my Aztek has tilt steering. I have noticed that when I tilt my steering wheel up, after parking my car, and turn off the car I can't remove the key! This can be solved by just tilting the steering wheel back down and then removing the key. Anyone else have this problem? I would look into getting it fixed but I'm out of the warranty and the car is running fine.
  • steverstever Guest Posts: 52,454
Usually the stuck key issue is resolved by gently turning the steering wheel left and right and it's not that unusual a problem with various cars. Sometimes people have to replace the lock cylinder if it gets to be too bad of a problem.

Yours is the first post I recall that involved a sticky key with a tilting steering wheel that tilting the wheel fixes.

Nice to hear about the price break on your A/C repair.

    Hi,

What state are you in? That's a pretty good deal on your ac/ condenser. Maybe that's a price I can get close to. :)

I bought my 2005 Aztek with 8,686 miles on it, and now it has right about 14,000 miles. My question is, I was going to get the oil changed some time ago, and after reading my manual, it said that the Aztek has some kind of oil life indicator and that it would tell me when the oil needs changing and that sometimes it could be over a year. I personally would think that is way too long, but I have put almost 6,000 miles on it and I definitely don't want to tear it up. So, my question to you is, do I change the oil or do I wait until it tells me to??? Thanks!!

Don't buy I own two -the first is a 2001 and I have had 2 air condioneers go a head gasket and many other small problems only 52,000 on the car.

I have an aztec lemon and it is 4 years old and blue-2 air compressors one head gasket and many small problems. This is my last pontiac and last american car.I am thninking of taking them to court I work for a law firm and I have been reading so many problems that I am fed up.

I understand what your going through,I work for a law firm and I am trying to do something about this problem.

    Mpapkov,

Let me know if you come up with something. You can definitely have my signature if you need it. GM's attention to the problems with the Aztek is just plain irresponsible and they wonder why they're in trouble. I'ts laughable! They should get ready for an even bigger decrease in car sales, when all the Aztek owners take their business elsewhere. The quality of their cars is pathetic.

    Hi!

I have a 2003 Aztek which I purchased new in August 2003. Since that time, I have had (3) hub assemblies replaced due to problems with the wheel bearings. Tomorrow, it goes into the shop to have the fourth one replaced.

After the 3rd one was replaced, we contacted GM since our warranty was about to expire. At that time, they told us that if the 4th one went bad, they would stand behind it even though the car was no longer under warrantly.

Well, lo and behold, the 4th has gone bad and after several telephone calls and much "lemon law" threating, GM has decided to go ahead and pay to have the 4th hub assembly taken care of.

I certainly know what you are going through and it is very discouraging to be having this many problems with a new vehicle.

    Good luck!

I saw your problem, and think maybe its mine too, altho not sure...Maybe you can help me, or someone can. I just got this beautiful 2002 Aztek last month, but yet i notice a few things that disturb me. Most importantly #1- I feel that i am on a boat. The vehicle constantly is rocking my whole body side to side...and i am not a thin person. My kids in the back seat are kinda getting sea sick....Also as my rpms are gaining, the engine noise is soooo loud.!!! Maybe for a sports car, but not this.

    Help me please....new owner.... :confuse:

Hi, I just purchased this 2002 Aztek with 18,000 miles from a local NJ dealer. I absolutley think its an incredible vehicle, yet different looking SRV. Its super..nice to be different. Gas mileage local isnt that great, but with $2.33 a gallon i mean really what would begood with the comfort level this provides. I would love to chat with some of the members so i can learn some things about this vehicle....Give me a shout please.....
I am having a few issues with it swaying side to side that i just cant figure out . Also the engine noise.....

I have a 2001 Aztek with 43,000 miles on it. Surprise ! the AC condenser has a crack in it. I have been talking to GM for 4 days now (had it to the dealer, dealer confirms crack is indeed stress fatigue).

My guess is that the condenser has lasted about half what one could expect as a *minimum* reasonable lifetime (barring some external event, such as a being struck by road debris).

I have 3 other vehicles, and here are their stats:

1988 Mercedes 190E (200K miles): condenser still fine (has had 4 charges in its lifespan).

1998 Ford Escort (150K miles): condenser still fine (still has original coolant charge, and blows ice cold ! - this car has been awesome all round !)

2004 Kia (15K miles) too new to comment on.

I don't want to rag on my Aztek itself, since it has had only 2 problems so far (this and the computer - which was fixed on warranty), and gets excellent mileage for the class of vehicle, but GM is proving quite underwhelming in customer support thus far.

I'm not expecting them to fix it for free (I have had 3.5 years use out of it), but taking so long (after they know that my problem is *the* problem) to tell me what they are going to do for me (in the middle of a very hot summer) is outrageous.

Mine is in the shop for the same head gasket problem as we speak. 38000 miles. The dealer said they would fix it for free even though the warrentee expired in june. They repaired the intake valve gasket last Oct.

I have a 2001 Aztek with 69,000 miles. Have an extended warrenty that is due to expire at 72000. I have had problems with the windshielf leaking, manifold, and the transmission twice times, and then stablizer arm broke (actually, I was told by mechanic it was cut...cops say it broke). And now there is a bold in the gearshift that broke and it wouldn't go into gear. Is is me...or is this alot for a car no older then it is?

We are seriously considering purchasing an 01 Aztek that has 37,000 miles on it. It is currently driving great and has ample room for our children, but in doing research, I am finding that these vehicles start having serious engine problems between 35 -45,000 miles. Could those of you who have a this year with this mileage or + please provide your feedback and experiences. We are supposed to sign on the vehicle on Monday and would like to have additional personal info/feedback. Thanks so much. Jennifer

It's nice to know that others share the same or similiar problems :confuse: but I am surprised at how many other problems people are having. The more I read these posts the more dissapointed I am in GM and their "customer service" if you want to call it that. I keep leaning toward another vehicle all together - I would like to wait til I have it paid off but thats 3+ yrs of grief  and we can't afford all these problems. Like others I'm looking at Chryslers and I have been impressed by Volvo. Thanks for the feed back!

I have a 01 Aztek that I purchased in Aug 04 and so far I have had some of the problems that are listed within the many complaints about these cars. Let me say that when it runs correctly it is one of the best cars I've owned. However, with that said it can be the most frustrating. I've had the air conditioning condenser problem,. bad hub bearing, electrical problems, rear hatch problems and some others that the previous owner had already had fixed...thank goodness. I would say move on to another vehicle. Most dealers know of the problems with these cars and are trying to get them off their hands with extremely low prices. That's the unforeseen hole I fell into. I've also heard that the re-sale and trade in value is very low. So that you don't fall into the repair pit that many of us have, turn your sights to another vehicle. Preferably, not GM because they have ignored the problems with these vehicles. :confuse:

Really happy for you. You are probably one of the very limited few that has that testimony. Hope it continues. You may have to be entered in the world records book for this vehicle. :shades:

    Okiechemist,
I have the same condenser problem on my 2001 Aztek, and the dealer says they can find no technical bulletin and says they haven't seen any pattern of problems. Can you please email me a copy of the tech bulletin to dcarriger@mn.rr.com?

    THANK YOU!!

I had the same problem with the wheel bearings.

how is your wheels? The dealer told me that my wheels are bad and have to replace them at $600.00 ea.

The Dealer and GM said that the Bearings had nothing to do with it.

It is funny that we had no problem with the wheels till the the bearings went bad.

We have a 2004 Aztek. anyone out there have the same problem?

Hi I am thinking of buying a 2wd Aztek, but I am not sure how much it could tow if it does not have the custom tow package. Does anyone know if it could pull 3500lbs without this. It is a 2004 rally edition. :confuse:

Does anyone know if I can buy a locking gas cap for my Aztek?? Gas prices are ridiculous and we've already had gas stolen out of our Grand Am.

    Thanks for your time.

I believe there are at least 2 available. Stant part #11506 (possibly replacement for 10506) and gates #31782. There may be more. If memory serves me correct, the Stant cap looks sorta like the original cap and the Gates may be more like traditional gas cap.

Yes....on the second bearing, after the local GM service dealer replaced the first under warranty 17k ago.

I always buy used vehicles and my last Pontiac, a '91 Trans Sport, went 205,000 miles and still ran like a champ with all options working when I sold it and bought my '01 Aztek. This has also been a great car so far, have taken it on a 1500 mile roadtrip to Mexico and 2300 mile roadtrip through the southwest with no problems. My Aztek GT has 85,000 miles on it currently.

However, the A/C condenser (under the dash, passenger side) or whatever went out and I had it replaced by the dealer. I had never used the A/C prior so I can't say if it did the same thing or not. Anyway, the A/C gets cold and works fine and all, but every so often, rarely really, vapor starts coming out of the vents. It's odorless so I'm guessing it's water vapor. It's only done this twice while the A/C was "on", but several times AFTER I turned the A/C off but kept the fan on. I've never had another car do this. Anything to worry about? Anyone know what's going on? Something that needs addressing? Thanks for your help!

Okiechemist, or whoever can help out...please,,

I have a 2001 Aztek, and my air conditioning is not working. Barely used the damn thing, (5 or 6 times) so I don't know why it is not working. I called GM and they said they are not aware of any problems with the AC system.
How can I get a copy of the technical bulletin about this problem?

    Q. Can someone please describe the symptoms they are getting with the wheel bearing failure?

I have read a lot about Aztek wheel bearing problems thru this forum. My 2002 Aztek (with ~60k miles) is making a grinding noise; sounds like it is coming from the rear of the car. The sound only occurs when the car is moving. Exact location is hard to pinpoint. I would appreciate it if someone could describe the symptoms because I'm guessing I have the same problem.

Did they replace the wheel? Or did you have to buy one at $600 ea.

I was looking at after market wheels for $500 I can get 4 wheels.

    Hi Mikesimbo

I had a problem with my right hub bearing. It was making a grinding noise and it also made my front tires wheels wear out on the sides. The tech told whatever side the bearing is bad on it will pull to that direction like it out of line. Which my 01 Tek did also. The wheel wore out so bad because of the bad bearing, that when I would turn a corner it sounded like I was burning rubber even a very slow speeds. You should definitely get them checked out. Hope this helps you ;) :confuse:

Ok i got one for ya! how about this problem. Have a 2001 Aztek with 24,000 on it. I love the car but so far i had the cracked condenser i had to replace my tires, had the jammed ignition, and now...if I idle it and turn it off and restart it ...it turns over but will either not start at all or...start and then conk out. Dealer cannot find anything wrong with it yet i can recreate the problem and plan to do so for the dealer tommorrow. The dealer said why did i let it idle that long you shouldn't let it. I wonder...has he ever been stuck in traffic? Anyway i am wondering if anyone has has this problem or anything like it.
  • diglostdiglost Member Posts: 3
I am having the same exact problem...also when it idles as well...what happened in your situation...my car is totally unreliable right now and I am beginning to throw around the lemon law like a baseball bat about their heads and shoulders...
  • diglostdiglost Member Posts: 3
For any with the same problem as I...when i duplicated the problem again they noticed low fuel pressure. Why this was never picked up before...who knows...but since I was there and duplicated the problem they saw it...gee what a shocker! Anyway they are starting by checking the fuel filter and going from there. So hopefully it will be fixed.
  • aztectiresaztectires Member Posts: 1
Has anyone had trouble keeping tires on your Aztec? I have replaced the right rear tire 4 times from blow-outs. Luckily I buy my tires @ Discount Tire Company and they have replaced them for free, except for the first one which was factory installed. I am really starting to worry about this car and my wife on the highway @ high speeds.

    Hello diglost,

Any update as to if the new fuel filter fixed your problem. I'm having the same issue with my 2001 Aztek and i've taken it to two GM garages and they can't find the problem. Even after I've reproduced the issue for them.

    Thanks for any update.
  • thehtheh Member Posts: 1
PLEASE let me know if you make any progress regarding the issue with the A/C. I have a 2002 Aztek, 50,000 miles, and was just told my compressor went out. Additionally, issues with breaks, I had a new dash put in the first year I had it, and the problem with the rear hatch not opening is never ending. And GM won't do anything about this because they are not :safety" issues. I agree, maybe GM better revisit why their sales are so poor as this will be my last GM auto if they don't step up to the plate with a recall!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The other night my wife was coming home and she said that the headlights were acting weird they kept going from nighttime to running lights back to nighttime till she turned the dial from auto to on. Then she stopped to let a friend out and The lock would not release by power. :P Those problems have not returned but now the rear hatch will not work AT ALL Power or Key fob or key. I have checked the fuse it is fine but I was wondering if there is a relay for it or if it is just screwed?
  • ray80ray80 Member Posts: 1,655
Had to look back a ways, but I found an old post: for your hatch issue, I assume you don't hear ANY noise when you try the dash button or key fob? If so, it is likely a BCM thing, but there may be a work-around that may fix it (temperary maybe). Try removing BCM fuse for a count of ten, it is located in fuse box under hood (kind of above battery) and I think it is number 28. You will lose your radio presets but may 'fix' hatch thing. I 'think' replacement BCM is around $500 and it has to be programmed at dealer. It is located inside center console (shifter area). Also IF the BCM had to be replaced, it will most likely be with updated part and if you don't have DIC you will lose the capabilty to personalize settings for lights and door locks.

It does sound like BCM issue, more so with lights being wierd. Perhaps some connection to BCM is just getting loose or corroded

I have a '01 Tek and have had absolutely no problems with it. Hate to tell you this but it could just very well be your driving. I know because my Tek has 102,000 Miles on it. And as far as the tires go, definitely your driving technique. Most of the time, even if there is something wrong with your vehicle, it won't do anything to the tires, with the exception of the alignment and suspension. This coming from a certified mechanic.
  • tekdriver05tekdriver05 Member Posts: 2
Ok, people. We all have problems with our vehicle, and most of the time, the problems slip through the factory line. Not GM's fault. They mass produce these things for god's sake. I'm sure if they could individually check every bit and piece on every vehicle that comes off the line, they would. But that just is not possible. So stop complaining. As far as having to replace tires, probably just your driving skills. Cars aren't meant to be beaten on. You have to treat them like a living thing. Get your oil replaced every 3,000, check cables and wires every so often, and don't drive like crap. Simple as that.

    Not GM's fault.

Quality conrtol is their responsibility. They pay for it and so do you.

Sounds like you have a Good Aztek. Since I got mine 3 years ago, I seem to be getting lots of small problems constantly (along w/the A/C going out). Right now I am getting spark knock when I use cheap gas. Gas is too expensive to keep using premium.

Anyway, the vapor is normal - I have it too. In the past I have seen it in other cars, but I must say the Aztek has the most. I usually get vapor if I shut the a/c off but leave the fan on low.

Can someone explain how the air inflator works. In particular, does it have a on/off switch or is it a switch with a built in timer so it shuts off after a period of time. And if anyone knows about how long it takes to blow up say, a recreational inner tube or any other example, would be greatly appreciated. This is for a research project and your thoughts or comments on this option are welcomed.

    Thanks

I am soo glad I found this board. I am having a problem with my 01 Aztek.

While I am driving, my needles will drop, the raido will cut out, and my head lights will go out. Then like a split second later needles will come back up, radio back on, and then all my dash light will flash, and in the DIC my battery light will flash. I did purchase a new battery, had my alternator tested and it is fine. I am at a loss here as to what is wrong.

Anyone else have this problem? I am taking it to the dealership to be looked at but they can't get to it till next week. Any help is GREATLY apperciated!
  • apassarettiapassaretti Member Posts: 4
Shortly after I got my 01, in the DIC it kept flashing that the oil needed changed. I took it,and had it changed. What a PITA it was to reset it. Anyway I am now almost 400 miles overdue from the mileage on the sticker and my light has yet to go off. It's all up to you to change it or not. Personally I take mine between 3000 and 4000 miles (or when the light comes on saying it needs changed)

    Good Luck

We haven't had the problem, but it sounds like an issue with BCM as it is involved with all that stuff. It may be something as simple as a bad connection/ground or it could be BCM itself. Myself I would lean towards re-seating connections and ensuring there is no corrosion that might be messing with the module
