I have been given an offer for my 2021 Tacoma TRD off-road Double Cab 6ft bed with 15,500 miles on it by Ecopark for $42,250. The lease pay-off is $34k. The maturity date is June 2024 and Toyota Financial stated there were no early termination fees if I were to sell and pay off the lease amount. The residual value was $29k for the Tacoma. I'm looking to turn the difference in value into a down payment on a lease for a 2023 Toyota tundra limited 4x4 double cab . Is this a good deal, is there anything else u should be watching out for or know? I have never turned in a lease/traded a lease.

You should check with your bank that you can, in fact, sell your car to EchoPark directly. Many brands are not allowing that to happen.

Your dealer should be able to convert your equity into a down payment on the Tundra. When does your Tacoma lease mature, and why are you trying to exit it early?

If you are trading it in to a Toyota dealer, then no issues. But, you need to be certain of the payoff if selling the car to a 3rd party dealer. TFS could have a different payoff, depending on who is buying the vehicle. (regardless of what they've told you, so far). Also, they may have quoted you a lease payoff including sales tax, if they assumed you were paying off the lease, and then selling to someone else.

I'd certainly give the Toyota dealer a chance to match it (after verifying payoffs).

i have a credit score between 700 -725. as per your quote, and many others, you said i should be getting 0.00225 for a MF. 2 dealerships have quoted me: 0.00285 (this dealership ran my credit and said i had the top tier credit.) and 0.00325. i told the dealer who ran my credit, i'd like it to be 0.00225. he said there's no way and where did i come up with that number as if it were ludicrous. am i getting the run-around or should i assume 0.00285 - 0.00325 is correct? i felt silly saying edmunds forum michaell told me so !!! haha

Toyota breaks down their credit tiers a bit differently than other brands. The number we quote is for Tier 1+, which I believe assumes a score of 720 or higher.

Tier 1 MF adds .00010 to the top tier MF, and uses a score between 690 and 719

Tier 2 adds .00055 and uses a score between 670 and 689.

So, depending on the dealer, and how your score is calculated, you could see either .00225 or .00235. Anything above that, I'm sorry to say, is the dealer attempting to gouge you for more money.

You can try to negotiate it, but in this market that may be tough to do.

Keep shopping more dealers; it only takes one to give you the base rate.

@Michaell , that has absolutely been the problem. i keep having to argue w/ the MD F&I ppl about taxes. the problem is the NJ dealers are still insisting on markups. so it has been difficult to say the least ...

In MD, when you lease, you owe sales tax on the entire selling price - you can pay it up front, or roll the tax amount into the cap cost and spread the pain out over the lease term. The taxable fees, are, by definition, taxable (acquisition fee and dealer fee, specifically).

Not sure why any competent F&I person would try to tax the residual value - was this instead of the selling price or in addition to the selling price?

If you live in NJ, you don't pay MD sales tax, even if you lease in MD. This shouldn't be hard. You pay the sales tax in NJ.

MD has some super-dealers that attract a lot of interest from out-of-state shoppers, and they don't seem to have any problems avoiding the MD sales tax issue.

Why can't the Toyota dealer you're working with do the same? Oh, because they're unable to think for themselves.

If you live in NJ, you only pay NJ sales tax. I live 500 miles from there, and I've leased a vehicle in MD with no issues, and without paying MD sales tax.

i wish i had your luck. i have gotten many MD dealer quotes. ALL of the tax figures are inflated in each quote. when i get quotes from NJ & PA dealers, the tax figures are in-line w/ my calculations. but NJ dealers want to still charge add-ons or mark-ups. or the PA dealers are 4 hours away and it is a bit difficult to make the time directly. but i will stay persistent. it being the beginning of the month, i may sit on my hands for the next two weeks. if you have any advice on leasing, i would gladly appreciate it.

Cape May is barely NJ ... more like North Delaware.

And, I get that PA dealers are so far away.

You aren't doing anything wrong, just trying to lease at a bad time for the market. Do you need to lease now? If not, hold off for a bit - it seems like inventory is going up and dealers will eventually start to make deals.

i do not need to lease directly, but i travel for work.

i need more space, and i have only been taking contracts relatively close to cape may because i do not trust my 10 yr old 100k+ vehicle to stand up to a long distance drive.

i am trying to get something now so i can expand my work opportunities.

Huh. 15 years ago I took an early 90's Subaru Legacy wagon I inherited from my father-in-law on an 1100 mile drive from Denver to Southern California. The car had 140,000 miles on it at the time, and it didn't miss a beat the entire drive. Maybe investing a bit in your existing car is the prudent way to go, for the time being.

Or, find something less expensive or that leases better. Big lease incentives on Ram pickups, this month.
