with the lower prices. Gas here in Columbus, GA is down to about $1.79 a gallon for 87 octane. I saw regular in Eufaula, AL a few days a go for $1.77. Keep on coming down!
  • PF_FlyerPF_Flyer Member Posts: 9,372
I think it shows more that prices come down slower than they rise. Think about it. EVERY single little bit of news that could drive up prices was hammered to death by the media and the reaction at the pumps was "next day". Now, when things are going in our favor and the news would drive prices down, the media is pretty much silent, apparently because only BAD things can be news now, and prices at the pump don't fall 2 cents today, 3 cents 3 days from now... but tend to hang at a level and make larger drops less often. I'll have to go back over my own price posting here and check this hypothesis...LOL

I had to run up to Duluth, GA today and gas there was in the $1.63 to $1.69 range for 87 octane. I want those prices down here!
  • ghuletghulet Member Posts: 2,564
...prices went up, what, sixty cents in the past year and we're all, like, excited that they've come down twenty in the past month? Whoopee. Still, let's all remember how much worse prices (or anything) could be, eh?
  • fintailfintail Member Posts: 58,415
Regular at the station I use finally hit $1.99. Although I am still paying $2.23 for premium. Very amusing how prices were going up each day, but are now falling very slowly. And it's all on the up and up, without a doubt.
  • bottgersbottgers Member Posts: 2,030
My family and I just moved from Cheyenne, WY to Dayton, OH. When we left WY, the price there was $1.91 for reg. Here it was $1.66. Last week the price jumped back up to $1.75. Has anyone else seen a spike in prices since the recent price decrease started? Why would the price suddenly spike in the middle of a period where the price has been steadily falling? Makes no sense.
  • lemkolemko Member Posts: 15,261
...prices are dropping at the Sunoco station. Regular is actually $1.99 - the first time I've seen it below $2.00 in a long time. Ultra, however, is still an absurd $2.29 - six cents below its all time high of $2.35. I'm starting to patronize Amoco Ultimate these days because it's a more "reasonable" $2.15.

    Carrollton, Georgia, Racetrack, Hwy 166, 87 octane, $ 1.61.

There are two stations (not big-name) in my neck of the woods in Maryland (Ashton area) that are less than a mile apart, and over the years have generally matched each others' prices, and are usually the best values around. Well, on Thursday one of the stations made news by lowering their prices to 1.719 for regular (other grades were lowered too, but I don't know to what). Keep in mind that NO other station that I know of within 30 miles was less than 1.93. Needless to say, there were lines onto the streets to get gas there. My fiancee and I went by that area in her car Saturday and BOTH stations were sitting at 1.619 for regular! And premium was 1.799.

I decided to take my car over there the next day, and regular was bumped back up to 1.699--but premium, which my car takes, was still 1.799.

I don't know what caused the decrease, because it's only those two stations that dropped. In fact, there's a Crown across the street from one of the stations that's STILL 2.069 for regular!

I noticed the Shell Station near my dropped another penny on 87 octane, down to $2.089, down from $2.099 and a high of $2.119. I also did a bit of riding around yesterday, and happened to see that once you go down a few more miles, prices drop off notably. In Berwyn Heights/College Park, a few miles to the west of me, they seem to be more like $1.939 to 1.959. And up in Laurel, maybe 8-10 miles north of me, $1.879 can be found.

Still not worth it to drive up there just for the purpose of getting gas, though! Hell, my NYer would burn about 1.5 gallons just on that trip!

I noticed the Shell station dropped another penny, to $2.079 a gallon for 87 octane. Hi-test is still holding at its high of $2.279. The Citgo, which is normally one of the cheapest guys around, is still holding at $2.099 for 87, $2.259 for hi-test.

Still seems like I'm in a high price pocket, though. If I go more than a few miles in any other direction, It's easy to find 87 octane in the $1.95 range. And a bit futher and $1.89's even possible.

    these days.

Is it true that Chevron is one of the best brands of gasoline? It usually costs a couple of cents more....
  • bottgersbottgers Member Posts: 2,030
The prices have been all over the place here in the Dayton OH area. Two weeks ago gas was $1.66. A few days later it jumped back up to $1.85. A few days after that it dropped down to $1.75. Tuesday of this week it jumped back up to $1.95. Wednesday it went back down to $1.77. Cruide oil prices were coming down the entire time all this price jumping was taking place. Has anyone seen anything like this in your area? I've seen some weird things when it comes to gas prices in my day, but never anything like this. Can anyone explain this?

Gas where I live is out there.. On weekends it's around $2.55 for 87 and if you want the good stuff 91 your going to pay around $2.80 or higher. During the week 87 will drop down to about $2.35 and 91 is around $2.55.. I no longer buy gas where I live I drive 40 miles to Nevada and Costco to pay $2.10 for 91 and 87 is about $2.00 Well worth the drive once a week..

  • uga91uga91 Member Posts: 1,065
Did I read that right? You drive 40 miles out of your way (and 40 miles back home) to save $.45 a gallon for gas? How many gallons do you buy at a time? If you bought 20 gallons, you would save $9. You also burned how many gallons with your 80 miles commute? You also put 80 more miles on your car--putting you 80 miles closer to your next oil change. Isn't a couple hours of your time worth more than $9? If you can afford a a car that requires 91 octane fuel, why do you waste one day a week to go buy gas? Maybe you should trade for a car that only requires 87 octane.

So I hear on the news this morning that oil prices spiked yesterday and are back down already. But that didn't stop the spike at the pump... for product already in the ground.

Now that the oil price is down again, the prices should react just as fast right???

I was on vacation in Carlisle PA, at the Mopar Nationals. I saw 87 octane as cheap as $1.719 a gallon!

I ended up filling up just before the return trip, at a Giant-owned gas station by the motel. 87 octane was $1.799 a gallon, and the 89 that I put in my NYer was $1.899. It was a real breath of fresh air to see gas under $2.00 a gallon!

Came home to another nice surprise. The two gas stations between my job and my house, a Citgo and a Shell, are both down to $1.999 a gallon for 87. The Citgo had peaked out at $2.099, and I think the Shell was around $2.129.

The only rationale I can see for driving 80 miles to save 45 cents a gallon for fuel is if you're going out to Costco to do your shopping and just happen to fill up while you're there.

My roommate is a Costco member, and he got me a membership there. I got gas there, once. It's cheaper than the other places around, but there's a catch. Costco only takes their own credit card, or debit cards. I have a AAA Visa that gives me 5% off on gas purchases, but I couldn't use it there. So in effect, it came out to about the same.

Still, 40 miles seems like a long drive even to do your shopping. But in some remote areas, I guess people don't have a choice. We have friends down in Appalachia, and once a week, I remember they'd drive at least a half hour, into the next state, do do their grocery shopping. That's how far away the nearest supermarket was!
  • bottgersbottgers Member Posts: 2,030
The price of gas is still jumping around here in Dayton OH. It changes every day, and I mean it can change as much as $.20 at a time. There's no ryme or reason to the pricing either because it goes down as quickly as it goes up. It really follows no trend what so ever and I can't explain why the prices are doing this. I've never seen this happen anywhere else.
  • ghuletghulet Member Posts: 2,564
...but this morning at my local Citgo (formerly BP/Amoco, this change seems to be a BIG trend on the north side of Chicago, lately anyway), gas prices were:

    87 Octane $2.099
    89 Octane $2.199
    93 Octane $2.299

...and the Shell across the Street was a bit higher, with 93 at $2.319. So anyone else here still whining about their gas prices (unless you're in the Bay Area, Vegas or Hawaii), shyaaadup already!!
  • andre1969andre1969 Member Posts: 26,023
I'd been hearing commercials on the radio saying that Amoco stations were going to switch to BP. The Amoco where I've been going lately for car service (since the two old guys who were mechanics back from the old DeSoto days retired), however, is now a Citgo. There's another Amoco, only about a mile up the road, just on the county line, that changed names too. I forget what they changed to, but I don't think it was BP! And oddly enough, right across the highway from it, there had been a Texaco station, that is now a Shell station!

Is it common for them to just play "musical chairs" with gas stations like that?
  • ghuletghulet Member Posts: 2,564
...strangely, many of our old Standard/Amoco stations made the transition to BP a year or two ago (replete with the nasty green/yellow color scheme) only to recently become Citgos (which had been an unseen name in the Chicago area, as far as I know, for many years). Then there are quite a few Amocos (most of which were across from Shell stations) that have been bulldozed altogether, replaced by condos or banks; this is the trend in the north side of Chicago, all land formerly occupied by anything at all will become condos, a Washington Mutual Bank, or both, with the banks winning out more often than not lately. We've also had a few Marathons pop up, which also had become nonexistent for quite a while. Ever heard of Gas City? They're all over the place in the SW suburbs, non-existent in the city. Very strange.

Waiting now for Sinclair stations to appear, or for McDonald's to turn into Stuckey's. Hoping the old Burger King near where I grew up (opened 1973) turns back into Dog 'n' Suds, or at least an A&W.
  • andre1969andre1969 Member Posts: 26,023
now that's a name I don't think I've seen since I was in Oklahoma back in 1995! Don't they have the dinosaur in their logo?

Never heard of Gas City, but I have heard of Marathon.

In the past 2 years in NewJersey, a lot of Amoco stations became Exxon outlets. FYI all of the Texaco stations were/are actually supplied by Motiva/Shell.

...the only one I know of is (or was, I haven't been there in a while) off an exit (can't remember which one) on the northern section I-270 in a St. Louis suburb. Maybe near Westport Plaza? I lived there for a few Summers during college with my mom, but wouldn't necessarily be able to find my way around now. Sinclair did use the cool dinosaur logo.

Prices are pretty stable here. Recently, they got down as low as 1.799 but now are back up to around 1.949, which it has been for the better part of a couple weeks. I don't really know, since my sister drives my car to work everyday (70 mi round trip) and I walk to work (something like 6 1/2 blocks one way), so I rarely have to put gas in my car.

I think a lot of it has to do with reduced volatility in the oil market. When those prices are all over the place, it creates uncertainty for everyone--refiners, commodity buyers, etc. That uncertainty is reflected in gas prices. A btter thing to look at for gas prices isn't the price/bbl of crude, but what gasoline is doing on the wholesale/commodity markets.

Oh and bottgers, I'm still here, thanks. ;-)

The state either relaxed or canceled the state tax on gas because I saw $1.81 for regular at one station near my house. I think I heard something on the news about a month long program or something. Couldn't believe my eyes.

The media is beating the fluctuation in crude oils prices to death, so when I hear "record price" I know what I expect to see at the pump...

So naturally, we get a 4 cent drop this morning to $1.79. At the end of last week in Altoona, the wife was seeing $1.83. On Monday, she saw $1.69 on her way to work, and $1.74 at the same station on her way home.... goofy!

Prices have been as stable here as I have seen in a long time. My last post was on 7/20 and as of today, we are still at 1.949 for reg unleaded.
