1.87 for 87 in beautiful Shorewood, IL this fine day. It's about 10 cents more a gallon at the BP by the interstate, which is about 1.5 miles from where I buy gas.

I'd guess 87 costs about that much, yeah iluv. WA has huge gas taxes, as I am sure you recall. Or at least I hope that's the reason...I know there are refineries within an hour, so it can't be transport costs.

Gas prices rose at all stations late Thursday to 1.899. The monopoly in western Ohio had all the prices go back up from 1.719 at the lowest of the stations.

....to pay $2.119 for 93 octane today at the Amoco off I-57 in beautiful Monee, IL. That's roughly 30 cents cheaper than near my place on the north side of Chicago.

have you been to Burlington, WA, lately? My old stomping grounds. I'm curious what 87 no-lead is selling for there as I type this. Around $2.09/gal? Anything new in the Skagit Valley whatsoever? Or do you rarely head that way much? How's about the Seattle International Auto Show? Did you or will you go this year? It's not like I miss my home state or anything!

I probably haven't been down around Burlington in a couple months. I don't get that far south too often. I think you're right on the gas price though, maybe a few cents lower than it actually is.

Nothing new in that area that I recall save for a Krispy Kreme, and more growth. The whole Whatcom/Skagit area has grown amazingly in the past decade. Bellingham has traffic of a city several times its size during rush hour. A good area to hold property. Oh, and it's pouring up here as usual.

I haven't been to the Seattle show in several years. I like the Vancouver show more, it is lower key, and they let you sit in anything but the real exotics. Last time I was in Seattle, the premium makes were all kind of standoffish.

And on a gas price theme...with the local refineries, one would expect cheaper gas up in NW WA, but it doesn't hold true. I don't get it.

as I grow closer to graduating from college in Rolla, MO, I grow closer to returning to the Pacific NW. I'm thinking Idaho, though, and no more Washington. Unless Tim Eyman can find an Initiative to lower gas and home prices and reduce traffic by 2000%. No kidding. Idaho is home to America's largest wilderness area, the Frank Church wilderness. They say that it has peaks and rivers and streams that have yet to be named. Funny, I was talking to another RT at the hospital I was working at. He was on a steep hill in remote Idaho(most of the state is remote). It was quiet, of course. Nothing but camp-robbers around him(some kind of bird). He was thinking to himself "no man has probably ever been here." Just as he was enjoying that thought he stepped down on a 3-inch cable line. He followed it on up the hill more and it disappeared into the mountainside! It was for one of those mining cars, probably dating back to the late 1890's, MAYBE more recent. LOL! The Mobil travel guide mentioned that Idaho no doubt does have places man hasn't stepped on before. Some species of bird has probably, umm, been there before, or left a deposit there, anyway.

FWIW, gas here in mid-Missouri was around $1.74/gal for no-lead 87 yesterday if my feeble college-pounded head can recall correctly. Hey, never let anyone tell you that a college degree doesn't take a lot of effort, OK? If you go about it honestly, anyway. That's a story for another day, though. Apparently Missouri University's new Paige Sports Arena in Columbia, MO, was named after a benefactor's daughter, who, apparently cheated her way through college at USC! She didn't even go to Mizzou! She paid a dormmate $20,000-odd dollars to get her through papers and studying. Anyhoo, let's swerve back to studying the nation's gas prices, eh? There's that eh again.

at around $2.00 per gallon for 87 octane here in the Glenn Dale (MD suburbs) area. I have seen it up in the high $1.80's up in Laurel, so if I happen to be up that way I'll try to fill up. Unfortunately, when luck finds me up there I'm usually on a full tank!

This is a nice area to live...but don't get me started on Tim Eyman. His economics are usually the most irresponsible kind, and he collects a healthy personal salary out of money he suckers people into donating to his cause. He's a fraudster. My degree from good old WWU seemed to take more money than effort, but what can I say, I'm a slacker. It's almost paid for now, too.

I can't even imagine 92 being under $2. I can't remember the last time I saw it. I don't think I'll see it again, unless I travel.

aren't slackers and get good grades. To avoid burnout I have to slacken my own reins now and then. Who's helping the non-slackers, eh? How much do they have to pay for that help? Why do teachers load college students up with so much homework? These are all questions one could ponder on a rainy November morning. A Krispy Kreme sounds kinda inviting.

I think it depends on the degree program you choose, too. Some things are just harder to learn, or at least at first they are. Eyman has irritated a lot of people badly. Washington state is doing fine, if you are doing fine, I'd put it that way. You must pay to play and live there.

Oh, that mid-MO gas quote I posted was for 87 no-lead. I believe 92 no-lead will run you around $1.92 around these parts. BTW-a classmate hit a deer the night before last. Deer are extremely prevalent around here, as I remember them also being in Washington state and Idaho is probably literally crawling with them.

I don't even want to think about those questions. Even with all the fun things about school...I am glad I am out now and getting paid to work, instead of the other way around. I have a business degree, which can be pretty multi-purpose.

You do have to pay to play...and to keep it on topic, I know the state has some of the highest gas taxes in the country. I don't know where the money goes, it surely isn't to roads. And here's some news for you...I don't think you can get any kind of detached house in Bellingham for under 150K now. Nothing. 800 sq ft fixers bring more, especially if the area is even semi decent.

I can't recall the last time any grade was under $2. It's been some time here. It's funny though, I remember when I was in school around Christmas 1998 paying 99 cents for 89 octane for the fintail. Now that was good! I don't have a huge commute, so high prices don't hurt me too bad.

Bellingham and house values, indeed. We would go up there when living in Burlington to shop downtown and at the Bellis Fair Mall. Yeah, prices on Skagit Valley homes were in the process of skyrocketing when we left in late-May 2003. Our home appreciated nicely in value...we're kind of shifting between gears now so the Puget Sound is out of our reach for a while, anyway. Gonna focus on eastern Idaho and see what we can drum up.

Gas remains around $1.74 for 87 no-lead in mid-MO.

in the fall of '98, paying a whopping $1.16 a gallon for premium for my Gran Fury! And soon thereafter, prices jumped to a whopping $1.30 or so, and I was pissed! In retrospect, it doesn't seem so bad now...

I remember going to Graphic Arts/Printing tech.school in downtown Seattle in 1979. I was paying about .99/gallon for regular and thought of gas as ghastly for that price! In reality it wasn't so bad!

I also remember paying $1.60 or so for 87 while on a trip through eastern WA/OR in 1996, and it was around $1.80-$2 in BC and Alberta at the time. Looking back after 8 years, today's prices aren't so bad.

Oil drops 6%
Crude-oil futures tumbled after the Energy Department said distillate supplies rose 2.3 million barrels to 117.9 million for the week ended Nov. 26. Distillate supplies include heating oil, which is closely watched as the country heads into the winter.

Crude inventories rose for a tenth week by 900,000 barrels to total 293.3 million, while gasoline stocks were up 3 million barrels to 205.7 million barrels.

Data from the American Petroleum Institute confirmed the supply build.

"This shows we will have adequate supplies for the next three months and if we can develop a trend of consecutive inventory builds in the next month, prices will absolutely start to decline," said John Person, president of National Futures Advisory Services.

The benchmark January contract was last down $3.28 or 6.1 percent, at $45.82 a barrel.

January heating oil meanwhile fell 4.8 percent while January unleaded gas is at $1.223 a gallon, down 4.9 percent.

 
The one that caught my eye was "...gasoline stocks were up 3 million barrels to 205.7 million barrels." That's an increase in supply of just under 1.5%. Silly me, thinking that THAT could affect the price at the pump right away.

the Shell station on my way to work dropped 4 cents per gallon for 87, down to $1.999. I didn't notice what the Citgo station was at, though. Usually Shell drops their prices before Citgo, but then Citgo ultimately drops lower.

That's the first time in awhile now, that I've seen mid-grade, which my pickup and '79 NYer prefer, drop below 2 bucks a gallon.

Shell station's still holding at $2.019 for 87, but I'm sure they'll drop soon.

...Marathon truck stop, right off I-65, somewhere near Lafayette, IN, I paid $1.999 for 93 octane. I was hoping/guessing it would be cheaper in Indiana (and it was, Chicago is still about 30 cents more), but it wasn't by as much as I'd hoped. Beats running out of gas, though.

on Christmas Day, I found regular unleaded for $1.679 per gallon at a WaWa. This morning, driving into work, I noticed the Shell station has it down to $1.879, a 4-cent drop from the last time I noticed it. I dunno what the Citgo that's also on my way to/from work is at, nowadays. They have the third digit out of their sign so it just reads "$1.8_9" They usually drop a few cents below the Shell though, a few days after the Shell drops their prices.

I was with my brother's GF/bandmate, driving home from Indianapolis, we decided to do a stop before the state line for gas and smokes (both of which are way more expensive in Chicago). Anywho, we bought a tank of 87 octane for $1.669 a gallon (and cigarettes for ~$26 a carton with a coupon, I'm so glad I don't smoke--they're almost $50 in Chicago, packs usually $6-7).

Most of the gas stations are down to $1.71/gal but Sam's Club is still at $1.70. I expect the prices to go down next week. Sam's club is always the last to raise prices and the slowest to show the decreases.

 

BTW, order the cigarettes from any Indian tribe over the Internet and you will save a ton as compared to Chicago.

We haven't changed at all here in State College, PA since Dec 12 when we had a 4 cent drop to $1.759 for 87. There IS a small station nearby that's running $1.73, and they USED to always run about 2 cents below the typical price here, but they hadn't done that for a looong time. Not sure if that's an indication of some kind of return to "normal" or not.

Last Thursday (1/6) was an odd day. I had jury duty and when I drove out, the price had dropped 3 cents to $1.70. By the time I returned in the afternoon it had gone back up those 3 cents. Three days later on Monday, up another 2 cents. On Wednesday up 4 to $1.79, and yesterday up 10 cents to $1.89. And as far as I can tell the big news was that the price of oil is EXPECTED to increase. The upward moves at the pump definitely seem sensitive to what MIGHT happen.

I think I need to understand how pricing at the pump works. Is the cost of the gas in the tanker truck delivering fixed at delivery? If so, why does the price change at the pump between deliveries? I'm really curious.

I was in kind of a rough neighbhorhood near the DC line, and filled up for something like $1.75 per gallon. In my neighborhood though, it's still hovering around $1.90 a gallon for 87.

... has us up to $1.89 for 87 in State College, PA. The gap between grades is 10 cents. I'm wondering how those gaps are determined. I've noticed on price decreases those gaps really haven't changed. Even when it was down at $1.69 for 87, the gaps were 10 cents. Doesn't that mena that folks are paying an extra premium for premium at lower pricing levels??

whenever the prices shoot up, it seems like 87 octane always shoots up faster than 89 or 92/93. For instance, the breakdown might be $1.899, $1.999, and $2.0999, but then we might see a change to $1.959, $2.059, and $2.099. Sometimes the 92/93 octane price doesn't even budge!

Every station is the same price, off brand and brand gas. Think there's any talk between the companies. They all go up within 6 hours of each other. And the media outlets read the news releases from the petroleum institute about how it should go up to 3 dollars by summer.
