I've had a new 2001 Pathfinder for a month now. I got a got a fabulous deal and I now find that you can do the same for a QX4. Maybe this will help out a few others.

How I got such a good price is by going to Canada. It was way under dealer invoice here in the US. No matter what you may hear otherwise, the US and Canadian vehicles are identical. Safety and emissions are the same (California too). The warranty is valid in the US. Going through Customs took about 20 minutes. Yes, there are a few forms to fill out, but it's easy. Registration here at home was no problem (same fees and taxes as if I'd bought it down the street).

The Canadian version of the QX4 comes loaded with 4wd, premium pkg, sport pkg, and sunroof. US list is $38,525 and dealer invoice is $34,899 according to Edmunds. With the exchange rate and duty figured, dealers are willing to sell for about $32,400!

So if you're inclined for a little trip to save a few thousand you have to consider the Canada option. Anyone who needs more details let me know. I'll be glad to help.

well jon, i wish i would've found that out earlier. thanks for the post though. i live in minnesota, presently in st.paul. but i'm originally from northern mn, so the trip to canada would've been a short 2 hours. oh well, you win some and you lose some!

crikey: i've heard the husky liners fit well. do you recommend them over a heavier duty, trench/ribbed type floor mat? and did you get the cargo area mat?-->how are you dealing w/o having cutouts for the floor mounts?

has anyone purchased the infiniti factory floor mats?
  • crikeycrikey Member Posts: 1,041
The front and 2nd row floor liners are an absolute perfect fit. I have not seen the floor mats so I cannot really make a recommendation based on the comparison. The floor liners seem like they are easier to clean than the mats because of the ridges on the mats. I do like them because of the custom fit, but the floor mats should be a custom fit too since Husky makes them. The floor mats might cost more.

I did buy the cargo liner and I am struggling with the non-existense of the cutouts, I think the factory cargo mats have cutouts. I am hesitating to do the cutouts because it compromises the cargo liner's ability to hold liquids, etc. On the other hand, the existing cargo net's functionality is severely compromised. I'll mull it over a bit more.

    johnskev,
Bummer you missed out - but the QX4 (and my Pathfinder) are great aren't they? I actually live by Rochester, MN so we're real close. The PF gets to St. Paul about once a week. Also it will spend time on the North Shore when the snow starts flying (ski rack ready to go).

But I am amazed that more people don't know about going to Canada to save money. It sounds strange, but it's really easy. The best deals are in Vancouver and Toronto (where I went), but others are out there too. I know dealers that will give very good prices (better than just calling and asking). A one day's drive can save you thousands.

cricky - will have to order liners today. Thanks for all the reports.

Are you SURE about warranty situation? I've heard that Honda warranty is not valid across the border. I currently live in Canada, about to relocate to US, and this is one of my factors in deciding whether to take my current vehicle or not.
  • crikeycrikey Member Posts: 1,041
I can't speak for Nissan but I brought over an Acura 1.6EL in 1998 when I moved from Toronto to Orlando, FL. The Acura dealers here in Orlando honored the Canadian warranty. These are Acura dealerships, though. I don't know if Honda dealerships will do the same, it really depends on the dealership. Technically, Honda/Acura does not have to honor warranties between countries -- I called Honda Customer Service in CA and this was what they said.

If you decide to sell your Honda and buy a vehicle down here in the U.S., the only 'bump' that I see is establishing credit history. Dealers might try to take advantage of the non-existence of US credit history on your part by giving you a loan with very high interest rates. However, if you do have a good Canadian credit history, you might fair well if the dealership badly needs a sale and uses your Canadian credit history to establish a loan. Of course, if you pay in cash, you won't have a problem.

From my personal experience, you might do better if you trade in the Honda and get an Acura. BTW, you cannot bring in _leased_ vehicles. The title of the vehicle has to be in your name, thus, it needs to be purchased. Hope that helps you, fellow Canuck.
  • lofquistlofquist Member Posts: 281
Yes, I am sure about the warranty. I spoke with both Nissan Canada, Nissan North America in CA, and my local dealer. All said no problem. You can either see the dealer or call Nissan US. They ask a few basic questions, such as name, VIN, vehicle details.

I can't speak for other brands though - have not researched it.

Thanks for the reply. I currently own 2000 Chevy Venture LS, leased. I was thinking about paying off the remaining payment + residual (I leased at 0.9% rate), and also purchase another car when I get to US (that's where QX4 comes in), so I suppose I should ask GM for the answer.

About the credit problem, how would I use the Canadian history across the border? I do have a very good history in Canada (never blown any bills, and the cash flow is quite big)? Fortunately for me, I will be travelling back and forth for couple of months before completely settling down, so perhaps I can establish some credit history during this period?

    Thanks again.

  • crikeycrikey Member Posts: 1,041
I would pay off the Chevy Venture, if at all possible. Be sure to have the title reflect yourself as the owner. Then, you need to contact GM to get a document about the vehicle passing US EPA standards.

Regarding the QX4, I don't think that warranty would be a problem if you purchase in Canada and bring it over. You might actually want to get in touch with lofquist(post 227) to see if you can get dealer to waive the sales taxes since you will be bringing it in to U.S. The only caveat with that is that you need to get it registered immediately. In order to register a vehicle in a certain state, you might need to have a valid driver's license in that state. You are better off buying in Canada because it would be substantially cheaper due to currency exchange rates.

Since you will be travelling back and forth, I would delay the purchase of the QX4 until you get settled in the U.S.

Regarding credit, I would not consider it a problem, just a nuisance. Yes, as soon as you can, establish a credit history in the U.S. Open a bank account and apply for a credit card with the financial institution.

i've been checking out the pathfinder discussion to see the talks about mpg people are getting. what's the status for most of you? i'm getting just around 15, mostly city driving. if it's interstate, it's usually only about 10-15 miles of it.

also, i find the armrest on the door to be pretty hard. anyone else? if so, have you engineered a pad or something to alleviate it?

oh, one more thing. i couldn't love the 6disc in dash changer more, but wouldn't it be nice if it displayed the running time of the cd track. just a quirk.

Ok, just over 2000 miles and I found my first minor problem: loud clicking noise from the gear shifter when in Park and I hit the brake. I assume it's the mechanism that insures you hit the brake before switching out of Park. I don't remember it making such a loud noise before. Anyone else hearing a loud click?

Zaino: Finally tried the Zaino products. First application is pretty much what I expected (didn't expect a whole lot with the Titanium finish). I'm guessing maintenance will be much easier than with other products. Tried it on our 96 Dark Green Jeep, and it was truly amazing. Really brought the paint back to life. Amazing depth and shine.

About the CD Player: I agree with kj's comment on the running time. Another thing I would have liked to seen would be a Volume meter. As it is now, it's kind of hard to know how loud the CD will be, because it takes quite a while to load. I guess that's my other complaint, is that switching and loading takes a good bit of time (but I can live with it, because it's incredibly convenient).

Finally, the Outside Temp. Display: The other day it was actually 31, but the meter said 51 for about 5 minutes or so, before it eventually went down to 38. How hard can it be to get that thing a little more accurate?

Sorry for the long post. And don't get me wrong, I absolutely love the QX4. It's absolutely amazing how comfortable it is (and the awesome power helps too :-).

From reading some posts a while back, I gathered that the Draw-Tite was probably the best option available. Is this still the case, or does anyone else have new opinions?

Also, How did the wiring turn out? Do they make professional looking ones, that sort of mount on the vehicle, or do they only have the kind that just have the wires hanging out?
  • johnskevjohnskev Member Posts: 98
i actually went with the dealer hitch. i got it at listed cost (though i'm sure that was inflated), but the convenience of dealer installing it and guaranteeing is nice. i apologize because i never took the time to see what brand it is, drawtite maybe? but the wireharness is very clean, mounted just to the left of the hitch socket, no visible wires, hitch has mount to fit it perfectly (maybe even built in?). looks great, and i got the infiniti hitch socket rubber plug.

ps. by the way, good point on the volume control too
  • bretfrazbretfraz Member Posts: 2,021
My '97 makes the same noise so I'm sure it's the same tranny lock mechanism in the '01. Yeah, it's louder than alot of cars (I rent frequently) but it doesn't bother me.

My temp display is out of whack as well. I've had it recalibrated but it did nothing for accuracy. I wonder where the sensor is? The display is inaccurate in both very cold and very hot conditions. I just stopped believing it and use it as a guide.

My 3.3L V6 gets about 12 in suburban driving and has never been above 20 on the highway. Even with an 18 gallon tank I'm getting sweaty when I hit 300 miles. I think the farthest I've gone on one tank is 340 miles. Regardless, it's dumb to stretch the distance of a tankful as the fuel pump is exposed and starts to overheat when you go below 1/4. I'd rather fill up a little more frequently than spend $400 to replace a fuel pump just becuse I was being a dummy.

Anyonelooking to get a bug deflector for thier QX4, don't go to a Nissan dealer. I thought I'd save the long trip to the Infiniti dealer, buy going to the local Nissan parts dept. No go part numbers don't cross.

Off to the Infiniti dealer for me.

I'm avg 16.5 mpg. with city/hwy mix. Highest has been 17.7.

Love this quiet smooth truck. My friends love the reclining rear seats.

I believe the temperature sensor is mounted just in front of the radiator.

I find myself just assuming that on average it's going to read about 5 to 7 degrees warmer than it really is.

    I've just ordered a 2001 QX4 4wd loaded with all the toys......had a question about the extended warranty....they have it for $1895 7years/100k infiniti warranty......is it a good price....any feedback would help..nicky
  • qx4_4x4qx4_4x4 Member Posts: 8
I've been thinking about the warranty as well. I'm probably going to wait a while before I decide. I think you can purchase it later, as long as it's before the original warranty runs out. Let me know what you decide :-)
  • nicky44nicky44 Member Posts: 5
I was also wondering if $1895 is a good price?......thanks
  • bretfrazbretfraz Member Posts: 2,021
$1895 seems really high to me. There are a few topics here at Edmund's com that discuss extended warranties. If I were you I'd do research there and ask questions before buying. You also might want to contact other Infiniti dealers and see if they'll sell you one. I imagine some do quite a bit of warranty selling.

You can always but the warranty later so don't be pressured into, "Ya gotta buy it now". Only thing is you won't be able to finance it.
  • bretfrazbretfraz Member Posts: 2,021
not "but the warranty". Some day I'll learn to type.
  • bikeboybikeboy Member Posts: 3
Spell checker can’t catch everything, can it? :-) Just turned over my 1000th mile on the QX4 (Tuscan beige, every available option except the trailer towing package). I got the husky liner and have been thinking about the same “modification” to get access to the lower cargo net hooks. I figure I can always use Duct Tape to seal the holes if I need to transport something that (potentially) leaks. I added the Draw-Tite trailer hitch, it was cheap because I didn’t need the wiring harness. I just need it to mount my bike rack. I thought about the interior bike rack available from Infiniti but I have a beige interior.

The navigation system is flawless (well, almost flawless). I wish it would stop reminding me to use common sense while driving, and don’t drive off a cliff just because the navigation system says the road goes there. The other day we had an off-site staff meeting. I gave the navigation system the address of the center (I had never been there before). When I saw that the nav wanted to avoid the highway, I ignored it and followed the supplied directions from the center. Rush hour highway traffic and tolls made the journey an unpleasant hour and a half. On the way home I followed the nav’s directions and was home in 35 minutes using local streets, no tolls, little traffic.

I am very impressed with the fit and finish of this car. One little tiny “problem”, I was checking the tire pressure for the 17inch Bridgestone (Japanese made) tires. The tire pressure recommended by the door sticker was 26 psi, but they are all holding (cold measure) 35 psi (including the spare) and don’t seem over-inflated. I guess I should check with the dealer. Love this truck….

Took my 98 QX4 in for 45,000mi service, and have the brakes looked at,(loud crunching sound when applied). Took truck to Midas to have checked out and they said the pads and everything looked fine, could be the wrong type of pads, will post dealers diagnosis.

I too wanted the interior bike rack, but my back seats don't seem to lay down flat(yes i know remove the headrest), no go, what gives?

Pleasantly surprised at the low price for 45K service. $280.00. Shocked at the high price for bug deflecter/SR deflector $116. and $74

    1. What does a rear window deflector do?

    2. In the Media package available? (the one with the vcr/tv screen).
  • bikeboybikeboy Member Posts: 3
Lopro: One blemish in an otherwise superb SUV (QX4) is that the seats cannot be folded completely flat. You can flip the seat cushions up and get a little more flatness, but with beige leather, I prefer not to do that.

Jmallen: The rear window air foil is supposed to help keep the rear window clean. It seems to work. The complete specs on the 2001 QX4 are available here on the website under New Trucks. There is no video available as a feature but there are aftermarket systems that would fit.
  • steve_nsteve_n Member Posts: 11
The video screens from the factory are now available. I work at Infiniti of Kirkland in Kirkland WA, and we have one siting on our showroom floor!
  • lopro1lopro1 Member Posts: 13
Do not install aftermarket brake pads on your Infiniti. I did and get this annoying crunching sound when brakes are applied. Midas says the brake pads/brakes are fine, and the dealer says the same thing. Wrong brake pads. Has anyone else experienced this problem?
  • bikeboybikeboy Member Posts: 3
Why are the video screens not in the brochure for the 2001 Infiniti QX4? Nor are they listed here on the Edmunds forum or the Infiniti Web pages. How much does it cost and what's the part number?
  • steve_nsteve_n Member Posts: 11
The video screen is a $1299 option (MSRP). I am not sure what the invoice amount is, however they are difficult to find.

i just picked up the infiniti manufacturers floormats yesterday. at $55 they were a steal. nice, heavy duty rubber with trenches! i was going for the husky liners until my dealer said these were only $55!!

Like the QX4, dealer tells me the 4X rides the same as the 2X. To me the 4X seemed stiffer, and I use the car for frequent trips of 90+ miles. Are they really identical in the suspension, and the ride is the same, or is it my imagination?

Does anyone know the required and replacement maintence costs of the QX4, ie brake life,,tire life, and required services?
  • lopro1lopro1 Member Posts: 13
I can tell you that the 15k and 45k service are $280...that's on a 98 don't know if it's the same on a 01 QX

Can you give us more info on the mats?

Is there a part number or description?

the mfr code is #f92 (got that from carpoint) front and rear floor mats. the mats obviously are a perfect fit. in my haste, i never asked if they come in another color (i got black). it's 4 mats, each say infiniti somewhere on them. heavy duty rubber but flexible to fit the countours of the foot area. the ridges are about 1/2 inch or so. the mat is flatter where your heels rest, better for wear. the driver mat has the pinhole. they have the nubs on the bottom to reduce slipping. i think that's it. anythis else?

    -kj
  • crikeycrikey Member Posts: 1,041
i think it only comes in black, like the PFs. this is why I opted for the Husky Liners because i needed tan/beige color. the husky's are a perfect fit but cost is much higher than the factory rubber mats. still, i'm really happy with the husky's.
  • johnskevjohnskev Member Posts: 98
that's what's great about the mfr infiniti mats. i was quoted well over $55, in the range of $150 for them earlier from a couple sources, but at $55 it's a steal. i actually have beige interior too, but i couldn't pass up the price. i know that everyone who's grabbed the husky's are perfectly pleased, so i'd recommend either.

and a note, the pictures i saw in the accessory book for the cargo area mats showed only one of the three mats with cutouts for the hookmounts. the one with cutouts didn't appear to have anything different than if you cut into the husky liners. the heavier duty mfr mat didn't have cutouts.

so i'd say, cutout holes for the hookmounts, but just cut it so it's a flap, rather than cut out totally. and cut it at a slight angle to still keep a somewhat good seal (attempted text picture follows)
    ______________ ______ ___________
    ______________/______\___________
  • crikeycrikey Member Posts: 1,041
on the "text picture". yeah, still debating about cutting into the cargo liner. i'm able to get around it by -- getting around the cargo liner. can't think of a better way.

the cargo liner saved my interior the other day as a gallon of milk had a small puncture which caused a leak. i probably punctured it 'coz i wouldn't knowingly buy a gallon of milk with a leak :). anyway, enough amount of milk leaked out to cause a small pool of liquid. reiterates my hesitancy to do the cutouts. oh well,...

QX4 4x4 needs tire rotation at every oil change.
Besides the extra $36.00, most of the
services for 15K interval should be the same.

    Hi,

I went to my dealership today to hopefully purchase the $55 Infiniti Rubber Floor Mats. Well, the guy at the service dept pulled out a set of weathertechs. He told me that Infiniti, other than a few years ago for the Q45 has never made rubber winter floor mats. He thinks that whoever was able to get them it must have been a special ordered product. He went online and told me that there's no such thing.

I went to carpoint and found the f92 floor mats. Could these be the standard floor mats that come with the vehicle?

Eitherway, KJ, can you let me know the dealer that you got them from and their number?

    Thanks
    Tony

I have a 2001 with 17" Michelins LTX M/S tires. They ride hard and rough compared to the Bridgestones. Car seems to have a hop as it goes down a concrete (not asphalt) highway. Has anyone experience this with this tire, or could it be a suspension problem . Both cars tested had 30 lbs psi.
  • jjan1jjan1 Member Posts: 1
I got 4 new tires (Dunlop) for my 98 QX4 last night, after 38,000+ miles at Winston Tires. The suggested tire pressure at my door stated "27", but the sales guy from Winston Tires showed me a book with the suggested pressure for QX4 being at "32". He told me manufacturers normally suggest a lower pressure for better rides and comfort. I learned that Bridgestones is also Firestones (just like Infiniti and Nissan). Also, tires with lower pressure normally wear faster but gives a smoother rides. The best tires according to the Winston sales guy is Michelins, but they don't ride as smooth as Duplop or Bridgestones. It's more for off-road rides. The Glendale Winston I went to does not carry Bridgestones, just because they're also "Firestones"... Since I never go off-road driving, I purchased Dunlop tires. Anyway, after 4 new tires, not only my QX4 doesn't have an alignment problem, my shocks are fine and my QX4 isn't as "bumpy" when it goes over a hole or anything...
  • lopro1lopro1 Member Posts: 13
I too have a 98 QX4, I have four new Bridgestones (684's) Very smooth, and no shimmy. I think they're rated for between 40k-50k.

Has anyone purchased the Infiniti bug deflector ($116) looks nice but a bit expensive.
  • bretfrazbretfraz Member Posts: 2,021
There's been alot of talk and, subsequently, alot of misinformation about these two companies.

Bridgestone owns Firestone, purchased in the 80's. Bridgestone and Firestone keep fairly separate operations. Most Bridgestones are designed and mfr'd in Japan where most Firestones are designed and mfr'd in the US. I've studied both product lines and I cannot find one tire that is the same for both brands. Bridgestone has passed on some technology like UNI-T to a few Firestone models and of course there's some personnel crossover like any multi-national global corporation. Bridgestone also offers it's racing technology to Firestone (CART, IRL) which Firestone develops further. Oh, and don't forget Dayton Tires are in this mix.

Some time ago I posted some detailed info in this room on Bridgestone Dueler vs. Michelin LTX. Do a search in here if you're interested.

They had a comparo on 7 luxo $40K SUVs. And here is the result:

7 -- Land Rover Discovery Series II
    5 -- Infiniti QX4 (tie)
    5 -- Mercedes Benz ML320 (tie)
    4 -- Mitsubishi Montero
    3 -- Lexus RX300
    2 -- BMW X5 3.0i
    1 -- Acura MDX

The MDX is really kicking everyone's tail, it seems. First, MT SUV of the year, now C&D comparo winner. I will post editor's comments on QX4. I think that the softer suspension hurt it a bit. However, if I recall correctly, they liked it best as their on-road cruiser for long drives.
  • stanliegstanlieg Member Posts: 5
My 2001 QX4 has a really bad highway bounce on concrete. In addition, when coming to a stop the car seems to jiggle for a a couple of seconds, feels too soft or something. This is probably why it starts gyrating up and down on the highway. I now have Bridgestones which ride much smoother and quiet than Michelins. Dealer says everything is normal. Has anyone else experienced this. I read a report earlier posted by "HRANKELL" that had the same problem...anu news.

I am sure there are some considerations given back and forth but it seems that the best test is by actual owners using the vehicle for their own real world situations. Using this premise and having owned many suv's I have to give my "The Best Vehicle That I Have Owned" award to the Infinity '01 4X4. The size, the engine, the interior and the design as well as the build quality and service are the best of the best!!!! I only have 2500 miles on this vehicle and I am extremely impressed so far. No, I haven't owned the new Acura.

    Thanks,

I saw the article and agree with jimmy-d. Just turned in a 1999 Jeep GCL under the Michigan Lemon Law. Leased an '01 QX4, 8,000 miles and LOVE it. I do notice the slight shimmy at 20 MPH and 60 MPH and am experimenting with tire pressures but otherwise, it's a great vehicle. Hoping for lots of snow real soon so I can take it out and "play". I've had lots of highway miles and love how quiet it is and how nice it rides. I live 2 miles off the main highway on a dirt road so I get to "rough it" every time we get some rain.

It seems the only relaxation I really get is when I drag myself into my automobile. There I can adjust the temperature and the radio to just how "I" want it. I seal out the rest of the world. If your autmobile does not give you the feeling that it is your "the best vehicle" than you have bought the wrong vehicle and missing one of lifes great pleasures. My QX4 is definately the best vehicle I have ever owned.......Please forgive the philosophy!!!!!
