Just picked up our silver 2002 EX A/T Monday night. Got it for $500 over invoice ($21540). Did all my shopping via email and actually only spent about an hour total at the dealership. It was the most painless car buying experience of my life.
FYI, the gap insurance they tried to sell me for $400 (and looked at me in amazement that i DIDN'T buy it) is available from my insurance agent for $20/yr. (5/100 was $970, protection pack was $395, Lo-Jack was $595 - i opted out of all these)
If my wife ever lets me drive it, i'll let you know how it is! It has to need gas sometime.
There are several topics under SUV where CR-V is spelled CRV (most of the comparo topics). Can't do anything about the posts but maybe you can change the titles. For some reason this seems acceptable whereas the incorrect spelling of most any other vehicle would be brought up. How long would Highlender last? Thanks, putting away my retentiveness for now!!
I guess when we sell our 626 we'll advertise that the leather is "flatulence-free", and our napkin dispenser has prevented nose-picking. You think that'll add value to it? ;-)
I checked out the Freelander at the DC Auto Show, and was not impressed. Interior materials are average for the class, no better, and ergonomics are poor. The speedo is very hard to read, and hard plastics are everywhere. It's also kind of small, and from the specs it doesn't look overly powerful.
It does carry cachet, and the AWD is truly full-time, plus it has HDC, and both axles are managed. But it's pricey, too.
Speaking of the 2003 Forester, word is it'll debut in Chicago on Feb. 6, exactly two weeks from now.
My 02 CRV almost has 3k miles on it. I am wondering when do I need do the oil change? The menu says oil change every 10K. Why it is 10K not 3K as usually we do for other car? is there any new technique involved? should I fellow the menu? Thanks!
Hi, I just picked up my 2002 CR-V LX. Everything looks fine. But I heard very loud humming sounds( i would guess it's from the engine, or it's possible from the new tires) when i hit the speed from 50mph to 60mph. If i keep the speed(50-60mph), the humming sound will just stay there, which is quite annoying. Is this normal? anyone experienced the similar thing?
Juice - Add a yellow visor label that warns against nose-picking while operating heavy machinery and you should be all set.
Steve - No worries. We went through about four volumes of CR-V vs Forrester before the hosts correctly spelled "Forester".
Atuzai - The 10K oil change is only recommended if you live and drive in "ideal" conditions. If you read the description it's actually quite humorous. Follow the schedule for severe conditions.
An automatic CR-V finally arrived at our local dealer here in Central Pennsylvania, and my wife and I just drove it. It was a white EX. It handled well on the interstate and on a back road with a sharp curve, and we were both very impressed. It felt secure overall. We will want an EX in blue or silver.
We saw the list of CR-Vs the dealership expects to receive in the next sixty days -- a mix of LXs and EXs in assorted colors. There were several that were not taken yet. It looks like the supply situation will improve in the next several months.
Our final choice will be between the CR-V and the Highlander. We really like the CR-V better, and my guess is we will purchase one in a couple of months.
We would like to spruce up the CR-V's interior a bit. Has anyone seen the wood or metal upgrade in real life? It is listed in the dealership's book as a $199 option.
Bajie2 - Whoa. Easy with the refresh button. That's you third posting. You may have missed Scname's suggestion about checking your tire pressure. Go back and read post number 5212 if you missed it. Seems like a good idea to me.
Actually it's about the sixth, but who's counting?

Picked up our 02' Silver CR-V EX 12 days ago. Really like it so far. We bought it at Mark Roberts in Okla. for $316 over invoice + $49.5 doc fee. Great deal. The purchase was smooth, spend less than an hour at the dealer. Ordered on Nov 2. Put down $500 deposit. Sales manager (Adrian) has been great responding to my questions and kept me inform on the status. Car arrived dealer on Dec 29. Although it is a 4.5 hrs drive for me, it is worth it. Anybody around the area should consider buy from there. Got about 700 miles on it now. My first drive was about 290 miles from the dealer. The dealer told me the new Hondas don't require break-in, just make sure you don't set your cruise and run for a long period of time. As juice suggested, I stay below 4000 RPM (thanks juice!). I have been driving pretty gently. Even with an AT, the car is pretty peppy, plenty of low end torque. First couple of fill-ups got 22-23 MPG (60/40 mixed Freeway/City driving). The CR-V is quiet both on freeway or city (make sure you got the correct tire pressure). I am not talking about Lexus quiet, but for a small SUV I am impressed. A big improvement over the 1st gen. Like many suggested, the noise can be further reduced by switching to quieter tires. The radio/cd is okay, upgrading speakers and sub-woofer probably will improve the sound. Handling is quite good, would prefer the steering to be tighter at high speed. Suspension is tuned for more comfort, a little stiffer would be better for my taste. Sorry, I am nitpicking. This is actually my wife's car. I am going to miss driving it when I turn over to her after it reaches 1000 miles Now I have to sell her 98 Jetta VR6, anybody interested
Has anyone installed the tweeter kit? How difficult is it? The sound on my '02 LX is at best sub-par from what I am used to. Would appreciate any tips to improve it. Thanks.
If I did the math right, we got about 27 mpg on the most recent half tank (mostly highway). Not bad. I'll do it again when the driving will be more mixed.
That's with 35 psi in the tires, which I still think is too much. Going to lower them again when it stops raining (we're floating away here) but not to 26 psi. That just sounds too squishy to me.
Still loving it, but wishing for more "tush cush." My other driver's seat was just getting perfectly broken in after 15 years. Oh well...
Peterclaver - If you're a true audiophile, you may need to replace all the speakers. If you just want to boost the sound a bit, then an extra set of tweeters could do the trick. This is the install page for the 97-01 CR-V tweeter kit. I think it's the same or similar for the '02.
I know that the '02 EX has a set of tweeters in the corners of the dash. You might be able to get a set of those (dunno if it would require changes to the dash).
The following web-site has pics of the wood and metal trim packages. They charge $142. for what you'd pay the dealer $199. These are Honda accessories, not aftermarket. I have ordered splash guards, cargo tray and floor mats and they all arrived as promised. This company even forwards via e-mail a UPS tracking number.
I didn't disconnect the negative post on the battery when I installed the keyless entry. I did disconnect it when I installed the alarm. I figured there was more of a risk with the harness and the alarm is more expensive. The alarm was more of a challenge than the keyless entry. I took some pics of the install if anyone wants them. My cable modem just came back online, but my webspace is not up yet.
Jquant - Yeah, post some install instructions along with those pics.
Beat - I suspect that Juice was goofing on Boston's swamp-yankee derived accent.
For those who haven't figured it out, "handa" stands for H(onda) and A(cura) Accessories. They're a good outfit. They've been good to me and have supported many CR-V events.
Hello, Just wondering how much people paid for their CRVs and your location. I am glad that some of you had included ur purchase prices in your email. I test drived an 01 SE and an 02 LX, both were AT. The 02's more comfortable and ergonomically designed than the 01. Well, everything went well and the sales rep's very nice xcept he's only willing to negotiate on the trade in and not on the sticker price (MSRP) of the car. So I decided not to go back to that dealership (not interested in paying MSRP). Any recommendations? I would be looking for a car inthe NJ, NYC area.
Honda didn't want their name used without their permission - even if it's to endorse the company and to sell the company's products. When I first shopped from H&A, it was properly called Honda Accessories.
You should weigh your options. I was in the same boat, but I went with a used 2001 CR-V SE (Silver with leather baby).
The used vehicle is going for $20,983. The owner is going to give me a cashiers check for the tax, lic, title. That will run him $1775 ($1775 I can skip out on having to finance!). Very clean, low miles, and gonna be a nice vehicle.
Another dealer had the same 01 on his lot, and was willing to deal. The 3.9% financing for 4 years was attractive, but I just passed.
I also drove a 2002. Very nice. Suspension seems a little stiffer, it is a lot more quiet on the road and at idle, stearing wheel is in a better position.
I opted for private party, because I don't do well with dealerships. I compromise all the time, I am weak. But I got an online quote for an EX for $24,862 (drive out price). That's a great price, but I would have to save 5K to put down on it so that I could afford a monthly payment. That's why I went with the used 01. I can afford the payment, and I can finance it all, right now. ) Either way I don't think you can go wrong. If we didn't get the used 01, we would have saved for a down for the EX 02. Both cars are great.
My suggestion is to get what you can AFFORD, because the bottom line is that they will both hold their value and out perform the majority of mini-utes in the long run! Take your savings and invest it in an IRA, CD, or some kind of financial vehicle that will offset (some) the interest you will pay on your auto loan!
That's what I thought too. Although I think there are still outlets that use "Honda" in their names, so why they were the only one I know of that changed . . . I'm not sure.
The "CR-V" name has always been a strange one to me. I thought the alphabet soup was exclusively on the menu at the Acura joint. It definitely encourages people to come up with more personable nicknames for their car.
When I was shopping for tires, more than one retailer's search engine kept giving me "CVR" as my choice -- look for tires at Samsclub.com to see this for yourself. Anyone want to guess what "CVR" stands for?
I'm not supposed to tell! But i'll give you a hint...they are in Carroll County, MD...if you want the internet sales guy's email addy, let me know. Actually a dealer in southern PA was only $50 over invoice on the same vehicle, but the only availables wouldn't be here till March.
varmit/beat: I plea guilty, but Spy's version is even better. I'm not sure how people in "woar-shington" would pronounce it.
The Aztec groups have even held meets, but I think they're more of a support group! ;-)
It's a shame the 2002 model didn't get those optional missile launchers. They'd come in handy in urban traffic jams. CVR = Commuters' Vehicle for Rage?
I thought I was the only one who didn't know what CR-V stood for. Thanks for bringing it up isellhondas. (my guess was compact recreational vehicle) It still is not as weird as Rav 4. What does that mean?

Hey Juice, looks like this board is fertile. My wife is due in September with our third. Two car seats and a booster seat.
3 will fit in a CR-V, though. I've had 3 kids in the back seat of the Forester, and width is about the same.

Hey and I don't know if I'll be in line for a Pilot. That "Aztek vs. CR-V" thread is starting to sway me towards the Aztek!

None of us in the business use that term though.
Anybody know what it stands for?
