Thanks for all the info. I did have the fluid checked at a local shop, but I'm not at all convinced about the quality of their work. I will take to a mechanic that specializes in imports. Overall, I like the CR-V, with some exceptions. The bus driver steering position is a little weird, and I wish Honda had thought of backlighting the window switches the first year of production instead of a couple of years later. It does go off road pretty well, water soaked dirt roads didn't even slow it down, even in reverse for 1/4 mile! All this and over 20MPG. Can't do that in a Dodge Durango!
Reasoning: Why would you want a car bra? To protect the finish? Well, rumor has it that they actually can harm the finish. Besides, why do you want to protect the finish? For looks? I don't know about you, but I would rather have a tiny chip (which can be touched up) than a big black ugly hunk of vinyl.
"Also a solid cover for the spare was also at $450.00 which also is excessive. Your comments would be appreciated."
Hi,
That is the list price for the SE spare tire cover. Honda didn't seem to see the potential of selling them as an accessory so they priced them as a replacement part and are actually phasing out the different colors of them likely going to an unpainted one for colision repair shops to use.
If thats a big factor with some then the CRV has to be near the top in small SUV's. Honda quality is a fact, and makes for a very good value. Wife bought one in January and loves it. Over the long haul I think CRV will out last the rest of the pack See ya. . bc
I want to make an offer next week for an LX. I see that the invoice price is $17,138. I saw one posting that a person got an EX for $19,600. This looks below invoice. Without a rebate I wonder how he got it at that price. What would be a good offer on an LX? Thanks. Bob
I'm a she, and the $19,600 price was a result of terrible weather (not to mention a cooling economy) in November and December here in Milwaukee leaving big inventories of cars, both new and used, on the lots in this area. I had cash, and was willing to work two dealers against each other, which they hated. Finally, one made an offer the other refused to match.
Where is a good place to buy a CR-V with good service! How much should I be expecting to pay for a SE model? Can I get the cargo mat and net separately outside dealer?
Macmac - You can get just about anything without going through the dealer. Try partscheap or Hparts. You can probably expect to pay about $100.00 for the two items you listed.
You can get any CRV at invoice at Commonwealth Honda in Lawrence Mass...good people to deal with...but I have to add do not get any dealer installed accessories...prices are crazy!
You'd have to do the install yourself. I think the cargo mat just gets thrown in the back. The net might require mounts to be fixed into place. I have no idea, since I haven't purchased either. Ask for instructions when you place your order.
You can have the dealer do the installation, but they'll charge you an arm and a leg for it. Better to have a friend who is "handy" do the job. Buy him or her a couple frosty ones.
Unless I'm mistaken that would be the first Honda with body ribbing (is that the term?). IMO very Pontiac-esque with quite a bit of RAV 4 thrown in. I'm not very impressed.
Can I special order an '01 with the '02 engine? ; )
Thanks Steve (he's such a helpful host), but I think that one is a bit suspect. Here are a couple of reasons.
That pic is old! I first saw it in the October 1999 issue of the CR-V IX. The mighty Bing (author of the posting) quoted MAG X as the source. You can find the article in the archives.
MAG X called it the CM-V concept. It was supposed to fit between the CR-V and the HR-V in the Honda lineup. Since the HR-V is now available as a five door model, it's not likely that this concept will get produced.
It's a bit small... very small, actually. It's a good bet that the next generation CR-V will remain based on the Civic platform. The new Civic is larger and wider than the old, so it's doubtful (IMHO) that a CR-V based on it would be smaller. Look at how tiny that cargo area is!
A safer bet would be that the '02 CR-V will be based on the Honda Stream. This is not the CR-V, rather it's a platform mate that most likely shares some of the stuff we'll see in the '02 design.
p.s. Keep in mind that that link is a Honda press article. Statements like "sporty performance" are subjective. I like this link because it specifies the restrictions that apply to the 4WD models. A CR-V based on this MPV will probably share those limitations.
Carguy62 - "ToyoPontiHonda"!?!?!? You crack me up. How could you not notice those screaming ugly wheels, though.
These are some spy pics taken by an undercover super journalist who managed to infiltrate the headquarters of the Honda Motor Corporation's LA design studio. The captions included are direct quotes from the super journalist's audio tape diary. Unfortunately, I cannot reveal his name. If Honda found out who was responsible for these pictures, he would certainly be imprisoned in a Kia for the remainder of his days. These photos and the related captions were first posted on www.realcarsmyass.com. I've managed to sneak up behind Master Auto Stylist, Bud "the dragon" Smithsonkowskicelli. This picture was taken from over his shoulder while he was waiting for a bottle of no-doz pills to kick in. Honda has him working his fingers off trying to flesh out a concept drawing he started two years ago. Notice the technical motif "round is good" written below the wheel design. This man is a genius! I also took special note of the accessory log-grabber taking shape on the page to the right. His computer screen displays a secret website used by Honda as a resource for new vehicles. Oh no. I've been discovered! Just before he saw me, I hear him chanting, "V-6, V-6" over and over. The dragon looks pissed. He's shouting, "No V-6 for you", and he's calling security. Note the stylish hat he's wearing and how he flaunts his job description like a status symbol. I'd better be out of here before the Kiastone Kops arrive. Fact or fiction, I'll never tell.
(sorry, this includes a number of inside jokes from that other forum, which will remain nameless) :-)
I am considering buying a 1997 to 1999 Honda CRV. One 1999 model I drove had a distinct noise when you hit the gas on ice and the four-wheel drive kicked in. Kind of a loud chirp, but it was NOT the tires squealing. The dealer and their service department, whom I do not trust, tell me this is a normal noise from the "viscous rear end" pump. I live in Alaska and would be hearing this noise a lot! Any other CRV drivers experience this? Is it serious or normal?
If you are looking for an 2001 2WD LX Auto, the invoice price is $17,578 (included dest. charge). If you can get below this price or close to it, you done well. I paid $17,550 for my 2000 LX 2WD with less than 5 minutes with the salesman. How? By shopping around. It is good to shop around with several dealers and ask for their best prices. I used that strategy and it served me well. Good luck.

Well, only if you clean up the cussing by the dragon. That "word" is on our list and it really shouldn't be on this "family-friendly" forum. Yes, I know it's all over the teevee, but we have higher standards (heck, everyone has higher standards than those guys).

It's legit. I can't believe what the dealer wants to charge to install keyless entry. It took me two minutes to program both remotes...for $66 plus shipping. Sweet.
It was nice and sunny this morning when my wife drove her 99 CRV to work. She called me up and asked if there was any way to get a power sun roof installed. I said I would ask the knowledgeable people at EDMUNDS. If anyone would know what the price might be that would be great also. THANKS.
The price the local dealer gave me for an LX is $17,700 which includes destination charges of $440. The cost of the vehicle would be $17,260 which is $122 above invoice. This sounds pretty good to me. Any comments?
I don't know if this is frowned upon, if it is, I'm sorry, but if not, I am selling my Black 1997 CRV on ebay and thought people might be interested. It is located about 10 minutes from New York City.

I found a shot on the temple of vtech site from November 1, 2000. It is supposed to be a spy shot (sketch) of the honda stream, but it looks like a sport-ute. The rest of the page has pictures of the honda stream, but the top sketch could be a version of the 2002 cr-v. Here is the link: http://www.vtec.net/news/items/535.html
like the caption says. Its the CR-V's little brother (not sold in North America) You can read about it here http://www.honda.co.uk/new.html and click on HR-V
Jfavour - That sketch has been distributed on other sites as the new Honda Passport (due 2003). It's supposed to be based on the MDX without all of the luxury trimmings. Not a bad looking vehicle if you like 'modern' SUV styling.
My brother and I just purchased two SE's. For the most part, we are very satisfied with the fit, finish, comfort and ride. But, I have noticed that when I start driving from a stopped position (irrespective if the engine is just warming up or has been running)it sounds as if there is a faint pulling sound. The sound dissipates when I travel above 20 mph. Is this normal? Can it be the tires? Transaxle? I took notice of the sound at about 200 miles. I now have 400 miles on the car. Thanks. Scott
I had the roof rack installed by the dealer (before I knew how much money I could save doing it myself).
I did the armrest install myself. That was an easy project. It's a leap of faith making that first cut into the fabric (yikes! Here I go), but once that was over, the job was easy. I used a wrench, a sharp pocket knife, and some measuring tape. The job took about 45 minutes. I spent the first 30 measuring the cut over and over and over again.

If so, I think I'd opt for no.

Anybody from Southern California get a SE. If so,
where can I go to get a good price with good service?
front mud guards?
retractable cargo cover?
cargo net?
and keyless entry key?
Cargo net
Oh, bother. This is where they all are. Let us know if you have any questions.
