It seems powerful enough to me. I haven't towed anything heavy, but it's a comfortable 80+mph highway cruiser with 4 adults in the car. I haven't taken it on any large hills, but it seems to have a decent amount of power in reserve. I can see people complaining about the power on the 1st generation, but this car has 160hp and 160ish lb/ft of torque, and I think it weighs around 3300lbs? It's not a stoplight racer, but it's a decent amount of power in my opinion.

amazing sales. we sure haven't seen any of them on the lots here on the west coast!

    Charlie,
I concur with Rob...I've had an 02 EX Auto for about 4 mths now and seems to have plenty of zip...zips right up to 80 before I realize how fast I'm going...hauled the wife and 2 kids from Bay Area to Tahoe just fine.. like he said, it's pretty light for SUV and 160 ponies is not to shabby (and the 4cyl i-vtec is nice)...seems like better performance than my heavier 190hp V6 Grand Cherokee (and much better mpg also)

I have a 2002 auto ex and live in SW Colorado. I've driven all over the state; over passes as high as 11,000ft(paved) w/o any problems. During these trips I had my wife and a car full of camping gear. The car had more than enough power. I'm not a gear head and can't speak to esoteric differences in engines and power. I can only say this car meets my needs quite well.
  • rockycowrockycow Member Posts: 114
The 2002 owners manual recommends 35 psi air pressure for speeds above 100mph and 26 for "normal" driving conditions. So, if you go 90mph on a trip, do you use 33psi and if you drive 80 use 31psi etc. I've always added about 4psi to the recommend pressure for long trips but that sure wouldn't meet honda's recommendation for 100mph. Course I don't travel at 100, but occassionally hit 90, so maybe I should use 35 on long trips!?

You can't go wrong with the manufacturer's maximum recommended number. Reducing the pressure (but staying above their minimum recommended number) will provide more comfort and slightly less tire noise, from what I've seen. I set mine to 32, and haven't noticed a large trade off. I would always lean towards safety rather than comfort, though.

My previous over-pressure concern was that the CRV was shipped at a cold pressure that exceeded the tire's recommended limit, a definite no-no.

Try going to 35 and see if you're comfortable.

    Good Luck.

After a few weeks,2 issues are concerning me. First, at highway speeds over 58-60 MPH, a howling, annoying wind noise. I had the dealer install the roof rack and ,after reading posts sometime ago, wonder if this is the problem. Second is gas mileage. With 90% city.10% highway, only getting 17mpg. I realize there is a break in period, and with the heat wave, AC on all the time, I can't expect high mpg, but it's still disapointing. Time will tell. That's it for now.
VARMINT,GATORGREG--I need a lesson in incorporating pictures from my digital camera to these posts. So far, I've only been able to email. Help!

You need to host the photo somewhere, then you can link to that URL. You can host is for free at imagestation.com, which is Sony's site. Works for me.

Read something interesting this weekend - the new Accord is getting the 2.4l engine, but peak torque is 161 ft-lbs at 4500 rpm.

Sounds close, but not really, the CR-V makes an extra foot-pound of torque at a significant 900 rpm lower point.

So why does the Accord get a high revver, without even more power to benefit from? Why not use the same state of tune from the CR-V?

Phillyguy - Juice is correct. First, get the image hosted on-line. Then you can either link to it, or use an image tag (html) to display the image on this screen. Here's the tag:

    img src="insert the url here"

Surround the whole thing with angle brackets like these: <>

Juice - I noticed that, too. It could be gearing, fuel economy, differences in the exhaust systems, or any number of things. I'm sure we can guess about it, but I don't have an answer.
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
Fuel economy, or emissions, most likely. They probably programmed the ECU to lean out the fuel to get that SULEV rating?

Strange. American like low-end torque and the Accord sells mainstream buyers.

    -juice
  • robmarchrobmarch Member Posts: 482
I'd go with the emissions and fuel economy as the reasons also. The low emissions status seems much more important to Honda than other manufacturers.

They can afford to reduce the performance a little, and increase the mileage, since the performance buyers will be selecting the V6, especially since it will be available with the manual.

I've wondered the same thing here in North Carolina. There are never any CR-V's on the Honda lots I drive through. I knew when this car came out sales would be strong, but I thought by Aug-Sept. you could find some deals with all the small SUVs on the market now. Everything around here must be presold. Tons of Accords and Civics are on the lots, but hardly ever a CR-V. I've never even seen a blue CR-V. I don't know how long it can last, but CR-V sales must still be red hot.
  • varmintvarmint Member Posts: 6,326
Honda sold over 14,000 CR-Vs in the month of July. That's the best month ever. I suspect that the high volume is due in part to increased availability with units coming from the UK.

Hey phillyguy, posting pics is a snap, I use the same simple code that Varmint mentioned. However, finding a decent photohost can be difficult. I used to have all my pics posted on PhotoPoint which was free. Then they pulled the rug out from everyone and started to demand money (like alot of other so-called free sites have done lately). Like a fool I paid their ransom, only to watch them go belly up a few months later! Another thing to look out for is to make sure your photohost allows external image displays. I think there are some that don't allow it cuz they want to force people to click on a link instead to visit their site in order to see your pics. Send me an e-mail and I'll be glad to help you get one of your CR-V pics posted here.

I have had it for 2 months (1800 miles ) and am really enjoying it, no complaints yet. It wasn't easy finding a red EX 5 speed, but my dealer in Cambridge,Ma found one (still in Japan) that would be going to Concord,NH, they agreed to swap for a silver one. Best I could do was $200.00 off of MSRP, than I added fog lights and the moonroof visor.

Mileage mostly city with the AC going is about 20.5. No highway trips yet. AC is much better than my 94 Accord, just hope I am as happy with it after 8 years. That's it for now.

Rob: I could be wrong, but I think the V6/manual combo will only come on the coupe. It's a 6 speed, which is schweet, but I really prefer sedans. Heck, wagons, really.

Nice "Rugged" pic. Looks like you're not using the camcorder anymore.

The CR-V is mine, all mine. This past week, we traded in my wife's S-10 for a used '99 Suburban. Beautiful vehicle really; silver with a grey leather interior. Big...really big. But with 2.9 kids (wife is due in two weeks) and a desire to pick up a decent camper next year, the 'burb makes sense. It had less than 40k on the clock and I got it for half of what they cost new. Sometimes you gotta love depreciation. Stepping from the burb to the V is a world of difference. It makes the V feel like a sports car.

Living at both ends of the spectrum now.

Gator - I was wondering the same thing as Beatfarmer. Your latest photos don't look like the old grainy shots we used to see. =)

Juice - Yes, the 6 speed is for the coupe. There are rumors of an Acura TSX sports sedan, which would likely get a manual tranny (I hope!).

Beatfarmer - Early congrats on the family addition.
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
Pre-congrats, Rob. We just had our 2nd kid, a boy this time. I hope the delivery goes nice and smooth.

Those 'burbs are massive. Bet you'll fill it up with stuff, too.

TSX = RSX sedan, right? Should be interesting.

"TSX = RSX sedan, right? Should be interesting."

Don't quote me on this, but I think it's something like a reskinned Accord Type R based on the new Accord. It'll be direct competition for the IS300. It's all just rumors right now.

I took my CR-V in today for its second service - at 16,000km.
I asked the Service Advisor to make sure they didn't include the spare in the wheel rotation, since I plan to upgrade FOUR tires when the Duelers need replacing. I also complained to him about the fact that the driver's sun visor falls down, instead of hugging the windshield glass.
Finally, I said that I had recently been getting a very strong burning smell from the left rear wheel, and that, often, the wheel was too hot to touch.
He said they would check it out.

I have the bill in front of me.

sorry, I didn't mean to imply that the sedan was getting the manual, only that it was nice that it was an option with the v6, finally. I know the sedan wasn't available with V6/MT, but was the coupe? I didn't think it was.

Who knows, someone out there might drop the 6 speed into the CRV for fun :)

varmint and beatfarmer, I still use my old camcorder, but you're right, I've also moved into the digital age :) The camera is good for poses, while the camcorder is good for mud shots cuz I can freeze the mud in mid air :):);) I wish I had a digital video recorder, that would be the best of both worlds.

varm: isn't that the TL's mission? Upscale sedan based on the Accord?

I expected something smaller. Maybe they'll do like Lexus and Infiniti - have one sporty entry and one luxury entry (IS/ES and I/G).

I don't think the V6 Accord has ever offered a manual.

I was given a Honda CRV (1997 automatic) that is in excellent shape so the price was right. However, I am extremely disappointed in the vehicle. It has virtually no power and fuel economy is lousy. The highest hill I have is 1,000 feet and the cruise is down to 35 miles an hour (from a setting on 55) only 1/4 way up the hill. I don't see where the enthusiasm comes for this vehicle. I am glad I did not spend money to buy one.

Our 2002 CR-V's driver side sun visor keep falling out of the roof. It has happened now 4-5 times. I am taking the car in for a service soon and will have them fix it, but has this happened to anyone else?

Regarding the new (2003) Accord: I have read several media reports that the 2003 Accord Coupe will be available with a 6-speed manual with the V6 sometime in spring of 2003. That's the first time the V6 has been coupled with a manual in the Accord. The sedan does not get the same option.

I also heard the Acura TSX would be based on the smaller European Accord, rather than the N.A. Accord, thus differentiating it from the larger TL. Then the TL is due for a redesign as a 2004 model. Hopefully both the TSX and the TL will be available with a manual.
  • varmintvarmint Member Posts: 6,326
Juice - With its current size and shape, the TL is great competition for the Infinity and Lexus near-luxury cars. But it does not match up well against the smaller, sportier german competition like the BMWs and Audis or even the Lexus IS300. That is the slot that the TSX is supposed to fill. It may also allow Acura to move the TL a bit more upscale. BTW, a while back Acura announced that they were considering dumping the CL for lack of sales. The TSX could be the replacement (though it is supposed to be a four door).

    Back to CR-Vs...

Jfavour - Is the visor falling off, or just flopping down in front of you?

If it's just flopping down, try this. Sometimes the visor will work its way off the end of the rod that holds it up. They get loose with use. I had this happen to my old Mazda and just shoved it back into place.
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
knahs: you can always ask for double-your-money-back. Oh wait, never mind... ;-)

Try a 2002 5 speed. With a lot more power and shorter gearing, the difference is like night and day. I also found the first year autos a bit lacking in power, even the '98 5 speeds were only adequate.

Now that's not the case, they're even peppy.

If yours is that bad, I'd consider a throttle body and FI service. Our 626 was hesitating and after that service it was like new.

My new EX auto is starting to sound like an old car - when I back up, there are these noises, when I move forward a little there are these noises, when I step on the brakes there is usually some kind of noise (it used to be just the first application of brakes reverse/forward). When I turn left (and recently started turning right) there are popping noises.
Has anyone experienced this range of noises? It used to be just the first application of brakes made a noise, now it is like driving a klunker. Was wondering if tire pressure had any effect on this - I've been running at 29/30 psi. Or if the lubrication put on by the factory has already started to wear thin.

Has anyone else experienced the burning of brake pads? Or is it just me?
  • muckyduckmuckyduck Member Posts: 219
Every once in a while, I get a rubber burning smell. Does not seem to be related to brakes.

Gee, I hate to sound like such a complainer, but recently my new '02 EX has not acted new - only 6700 miles.
  • crvdudecrvdude Member Posts: 2
As the name implies, I have a CRV :-) Bought an '02 a few months ago, and when I apply the brakes for the first time, I hear a loud noise (like a "clank" for lack of better term). It seems to stop after the first time the brakes are applied.

Anyone else have this issue with their CRV and if so how was it resolved? Any responses would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
  • colorado_kidcolorado_kid Member Posts: 32
Muckyduck - Yep, have the same "noises". Especially the turn to the left one. I took it into Honda yesterday and they "heard" the popping noise. Spent quite some time checking on the suspension, brakes, etc. and could not resolve the problem. The mechanic was miffed. I am going to keep an ear out to try and more specifically pin-down some of them and take it back in at 10K for my maintenance service and have them "give 'er another go". How many miles do you have on yours?

    MK
  • muckyduckmuckyduck Member Posts: 219
I have about 6700. Was going into dealer soon for 7500 mile maintenance. Glad to hear someone else is having same problems but NOT glad they could not find it. Varmint thinks it is the ABS controller causing this popping noise. Another cr-v forum apparently has a discussion about it. I plan on mentioning that to my dealer.

crvdude - this brake clank/clunk appears to be a common 'problem' with these new cr-v's. I think mine is getting worse - it will clunk the first time, but lately it has been doing it at other times also.

This is not what I expected from Honda. And things like this can be next to impossible to get a dealer to fix unless there are many many cr-v's that start exhibiting this and Honda issues a TSB.
  • tomsrtomsr Member Posts: 325
I think it is the brake pads shifting. When you back up and apply the brakes they move slightly
in one direction then the first stop after that they shift the other direction. It is no big deal to me since my Acura CL did it too.We have to nitpick it don't we or visit other forums and see what real problems people have with other brands.
So far 5000 miles and loving it,but would love it more with 25 more horspower.
  • colorado_kidcolorado_kid Member Posts: 32
I feel the same way. My Dad has a 99EX and it has been absolutely flawless. Other than regular maintenance, not a penny has been spent, nor any additional time in the shop. I was certainly hoping for a similar experience. ;-)

I did hear about the ABS controller, and even printed out the threads from various forums. Had a good service tech who looked into it for me. Basically, if my understanding is correct... the ABS controller will make a "clicking" noise because it rubs or hangs from it's bracket location, due to heat. The other symptom with the controller is the ABS or Brake lights coming on. Who knows though? Hopefully this will be an easy fix for you. I tell ya though, please let me know if your dealer comes up with the problem and fix. I took mine to a very good Honda dealer here in Denver (Ralph Schomp), and was certainly disappointed that they could not offer me a viable solution. Good luck brother....

My '02 LX 5-spd (chianti red) finally arrived. It's still in break-in period, so I don't have much yet to post about gas mileage, falling sun visors, seat rocking, or increasing noises I've seen posted here. I sure hope mine escapes these problems.

Compared to my '93 Suzuki, the CR-V drives like a dream. Very peppy, great acceleration, good power on hills, extremely smooth but firm ride (with tires set at 32 psi), and very quiet. Fine car. I find the power door locks, including tailgate, very confusing and inconvenient, but then again, I like manual everything.

Was very surprised (and appalled) about the spare key issue. Getting even one spare electronic key will cost anywhere from $30 - $80 at local dealers and key shops -- they don't even have the equipment yet for '02s. Guess I'll be calling AAA to jimmy my door if I goof up and lock both my keys inside!

I will be putting either a Yakima or Thule roof rack on shortly -- don't expect problems other than increased wind noise, which I don't mind.
Will post experiences after a few thousand miles.
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
I'll take educated guesses: your brake pads are glazed and your sway bars need more lithium grease.

The pads can be scuffed by the dealer, or some say if you go quickly in reverse and slam the brakes it helps, just make sure you have plenty of space.

The sways may be squeeking, so spray some white lithium grease on them now and every time you rotate your tires.

Good news is if you decide you can't stand it and you want to sell, Edmunds confirms you'll at least have good resale.

  • robmarchrobmarch Member Posts: 482
I definitely get a brake pad shifting noise, but also hear some suspension "clicking" I guess I'll ask them to look at it next service date. It doesn't really bother me too much, though. Or, maybe I'll just shoot some lithium grease on the sway bars, like Juice suggested and see if that helps.
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
Here's an idea what to look for:

    image

That thick black bar is my sway bar (18mm in this case), and yours should look similar. There should be two rubber bushings that hold it on its track, sort of, but allow it to slide side-to-side. Look closely and you'll notice the white grease marks on the metal bar, to give you an idea just how much they move (half inch each way in my case).

Hot weather and rain washes the grease away and it should be re-applied once in a while. If not you have metal sliding against rubber, a perfect recipe for annoying squeeking noises. Like nails on a chalk board.

Get a spray can, and then every time you rotate the tires (access is then easy), give it a little squirt. Do not use WD40 because it's oil based and can cause the rubber bushings to deteriorate.

    -juice

PS If you've upgraded to urethane bushings, they are even noisier, so you have to be even more judicious about lubing the sways

  • colorado_kidcolorado_kid Member Posts: 32
Thanks for the tip on the sways.... I will give them a good shot of grease and see if that helps....
  • jfavourjfavour Member Posts: 105
Varmit - The sun visor falls completely out of the roof. It comes off at the plastic piece that inserts into the hole in the roof. The whole plastic piece comes out and the sun visor falls into the driver's lap. I usually shove it back in and it stays for 1 day to 1 week, then falls out again when the driver rotates the sun visor down for use. I have a service scheduled next week and will hopefully get it resolved then.

About the clicking sound, I can always hear it
when the car stops and there happen to be cement barriers aside. If there is no barrier, the sound is hard to detect. I tried to put my Accord in the same location, but didn't hear any clicking sound.

So i think it is unique to the new CRV. What exactly is this sound? Can somebody explain?
    Thanks.

Sending email pix this weekend. Appreciate your taking the time to post on this thread. I had my 1st emergency experience this week. Had to change lanes real fast to avoid an accident. CR-V performed like a champ! I don't think my old Pathfinder would have made this move. It gave me a lot of confidence.
  • robmarchrobmarch Member Posts: 482
I would ask your dealer to order a replacement assembly. It sounds like the plastic pieces that hold it to the roof are not mating correctly. Good Luck getting it fixed, it sounds like it could be pretty annoying.
  • muckyduckmuckyduck Member Posts: 219
is probably the reverse lockout solenoid - when you come to a stop, there is a click, which makes it possible to shift into reverse. About 3-5 mph there will another click, thus preventing you from shifting into reverse while the car is moving forward. Apparently this is close to the passenger compartment, making it easier to hear.
Not sure what you mean by cement barriers - where are you parking?
