yep, this is what I notice. I think it's the pads shifting when changing directions and moving in their holder which was designed to accomodate hot brake pads also.
I consider it a minor annoyance, but there may be something the dealer can do for you if you describe the problem well enough for them.
Jergenmoss - The five-speed auto tranny was a guess that has been posted in recent months. It started when Honda announced that the Element would have one, and then the rumor grew when the Accord was introduced with one.
Honda recently announced the actual changes and, as tradition dictates, they are minor. The console storage has been enlarged, coat hooks have been added, and Taffeta White models will come with the black/gray interior (instead of Saddle).
Hey Varmint, I noticed you wrote that the white color will now come with the black interior INSTEAD of saddle. Have you seen that definitively? Here's an excerpt of what I wrote earlier (on another forum) with respect to the interior color change mentioned by Honda on the hondanews site:
"This sentence could use some clarification IMO:
'New colors for 2003 include a black interior color scheme available on models with Taffeta White exteriors.'
Does this mean you can get a white 'V with your choice of either the original tan or new black interior (kind of like how the black MDX was the only color offered with a choice of 2 different interior colors), or does it mean it will only be offered with a black interior from now on? The use of the word "available" would seem to imply that we will have a choice. Also, the use of the plural phrase "new colors...include" would imply that there are other additional color changes in the works."
BTW, when I originally wrote the above, I followed it up with a "nerd smilie"
Dunno for sure. The interpretation at your old stomping grounds has been that of a single "option" (no option at all). I have doubts that Honda would chose an unpopular color like Taffeta White (no offense to Albino Gator) for a special interior color scheme. I think the MDX is the exception, not the rule. Black is also a much more popular color.
I wouldn't read too much into the plural form of "color". They could mean black and white (two colors). If they had other colors up their sleeve, why would they not announce them? Also why would use the plural form if they were hiding something.
Maybe I'm being dense, but I don't think Honda writes their press material with hidden clues like those used on the TV show, "The Mole". We'll have to wait and see.
Hey Varmint, you didn't miss a smilie - I just wanted to point out that I recognize how overly analytical I'm being. What I was trying to say was that when I wrote the above at my new stomping grounds, I ended it with the "nerd smilie" to help convey that very message. I don't really think Honda is being deliberately deceptive, I'm just trying to decipher what it is they're actually saying. Unfortunately, in my line of work I have to nitpick over the meaning of this type of stuff all the time, so I can't help myself I just found Honda's choice of words rather interesting since it left some wiggle room. They could very easily have said: "For 2003, Tafetta White CR-Vs will now come with a black interior, replacing tan." Instead they used language which is open to interpretation IMO.
I thought the same thing, but didn't think it was worth mentioning. The word "available" does suggest a choice between the previous tan interior and the "new" black interior.
Test drove the 2002 CR-V EX a couple of weeks ago. Really loved it, but salesperson gave me the sad tale of how hard they are to get a hold of. I really wanted the silver and there were none available so offhandedly I told him to give me a call if he got one in. Yesterday I got the call. Dealer got several in over the weekend and one of them the silver EX. So I went to the dealer last evening and left the deposit. Got to it before the dealer had time to do their "prep" and add the extra $300-$400 to the price. They wouldn't come off of MSRP ($22,760), but did come up on my trade value and I was comfortable enough with the deal. So, I'm supposed to pick it up tonight.
I'm very nervous. I've never owned a Honda, but reading all the comments and recommendations here is very reassuring.
Just got back in town. Pix came back as "undeliverable". Will resend.Went to an outdoor cafe & there were no seats/tables available. I was tempted to take out the picnic table, but, alas, I had no folding seats. Maybe I'll take a few along next trip ,just in case. When you open the pix, you'll see why I wasn't concerned over the interior fabric.

Hey Thai, approach/departure angles for a stock '02 'V are 29/24 (per Truck Trend comparo). However, by adding the 225/70-15 tires, I think I might have gained a degree or two. I know that my ground clearance went from approx 8.1" to approx 8.6" with the new tires, and I think the new approach/departure angles could be figured out with that info. However, Mrs. GG says it would involve cosigns and other stuff I've long forgotten, so I gave up
For jul26 and others interested, I have found accessories for my 2002 5-spd LX -- including cargo cover, cargo liner, cargo tray, cargo net, side body cladding, half-nose mask -- for significantly cheaper at handa-accessories.com than at hparts.com. Better variety, too.
GG and Thai - Yep, those are the same angles published on the Wieck media site. I think the breakover is still 18 degrees (wheelbase is too long). I've never found numbers for suspension travel. They're probably so low Honda doesn't want to publish them.
Anyone remember what the angles are for the 1st gen? IIRC, they were 31/28.
Last weekend while inspecting the cr-v 2002, I notice that the a/c heat exchanger in the front of the V had been hit by maybe a lil rock or some thing that left a nice imprint on the cell i am wandering if this could be a problem in the future with the v's if you break a cell you will lose all the freon + you will have to replace the element and of course charge the system. Greetings from sunny Miami.
My parent's CR-V is the zircon blue. I like it a lot. I don't think I'd get it personally (I'm more of a black car kinda guy), but it looks good. It kinda changes depending on the light....blue to purples. Pretty neat.
My wife has a nice Acura 3.2 TL but more often now she wants to drive my CRV.The roomy feel and visibility are part of it.She says it is easier to put the two grandkids in car seats which is true. For a road trip the Acura would be best but for general suburban use the V cannot be beat. The power is adequate but if you want to tow anything look elsewhere.
Any one had good experience in buying HONDA CRV in the San Francisco area? Know a trustworthy dealer?
Also, does it make much sense to get a used one? Seems to me from the discussions in here that the price drop in the first couple of years isn't that much, and since I might only be holding on to it for a few years, maybe I should get a new one? Or?
Also, I am very concerned with safety. How many air bags does it have and how has it performed in crash tests? Would I be better/safer off in a heavier car?
as well as cost of repair, then the CRV wins hands down over other types of small SUV's/hatchbacks. I did a quick quote on my insurance company's website for the following vehicles plus my husband's truck to see how much it would cost us a year. As a comparison, the quote with the CRV was $120 less a year than the PT Cruiser, about $160 less than the RAV4 and the Forester, and $220 less a year than the new Vibe/Matrix and the Hyundai Elantra GT hatchback.
Tomsr - Seems that the TL and CR-V combination is fairly popular. Myself, Bing, and several others have those two in our garages.
Livi_bil - Safety concerns? Well it depends on how you define safety.
From an active safety standpoint, the CR-V's brakes okay (about average) for the class and handles like a tall car. In other words, it's better than a real truck, but not as good as a small car. The CR-V does have great forward visibility, but that does you no good unless you use it to your advantage (pay attention to what's ahead).
From a passive safety point of view, the CR-V cannot be beat. It currently holds top honors in the IIHS offset and NHTSA front and side impact crash tests. The CR-V earned the highest scores in all three tests.
The EX model comes with four airbags (front and side for the front passengers). The LX comes standard with the two front bags and the side bags are options. The CR-V also makes use of dual pretensioned seat belts. Both the lap and shoulder belts are pretensioned. Headrests have been designed to help prevent whiplash.
All of the above applies to the 2002 model. The 1st gen CR-V did not fare as well in the IIHS crash test, so if safety is a big factor for you, go for the 2002.
OK, it's getting to the point that I can't put it off any longer. My 98K Mitsubishi/Eagle Summit Wagon had a sticking hydraulic valve lifter this morning ... terrible clatter ... eventually smoothed out ... NEED a CR-V.
Question: Anyone know anything about when the 2003s are due. I know the changes are supposed to be trivial, but if the 2002 to 2003 changeover is soon, then I'd rather wait ... for obvious reasons.
The salesman at my dealer said that they didn't expect the 2003s in until January. I don't know if he just said that in order to get me to purchase the 2002 (I did). Meanwhile, the 2002s are still flying off the lot.
We have a zircon blue CR-V. It wasn't either of our first choices, but the only one we could agree on. My husband wanted chianti red, but I didn't like it teamed up with the "saddle" interior. I liked the mohave mist with saddle, but my husband didn't. Neither of us wanted silver or black, so that left us with the only one neither of us disliked - but didn't actually like.
Three weeks later - it's really growing on us. I like it better every day.
crv4me2: I decided to wait ... placed my deposit today on a 2003 Silver AT EX ... MSRP ... "sometime in November." The salesman had what appeared to be an "order sheet" that showed 2002s through October.
2003 color chart did gybe with the other reports that the only change is white now comes with black rather than brown interior.
I suspicion the 2003s will be assembled in Swindon rather than Sayama.
Just curious, do you know if there was any change in the 2003 MSRP from 2002? Never having owned a silver car, silver was my first choice this time. Even with the dark interior, it seems to stay cooler when parked outside.
Ordered a cargo cover and a couple of other things. You're right, handa-accessories.com does have the best prices. Haven't decided whether or not I want roof racks yet, but if I do, that's where I will get them.
Does anyone know if the extended warranty offered by hondawarranty.com is the same one offered by the dealer?
My dealer is expecting my 2003 CRV to be built in October and delivered in November. I'm getting a 5 speed EX (Chianti Red) and dealer told me my CRV would be manufactured in Japan.
Haven't heard anything about price increases yet, but if looking at last year, the LX only went up $50 and the EX went up 3.3% with all the redesign that took place last year. With only the increase in size of the front dash cargo area and the addition of coat hooks in the back, I wouldn't expect a significant change in price.
No, you don't really need the cargo cover. You have to stare really hard to see inside the tinted windows. Especially with the dark interior. I just happen to be used to a car, and I wanted the option of being able to enclose the cargo area (sort of like a trunk) so I ordered the cover.
In my opinion, the CR-V looks great in all the available colors. Of the two available interior colors, I prefer the black over the tan.
Sorry about the double post. I accidentally hit the Enter key. Anyway, does anyone know what the complete list of changes, including color changes (interior and exterior) are coming for 2003? One thing I'd like to see on the EX is the Homelink garage door opener. Any info. would be very much appreciated since I am trying to decide if I should wait for a 2003 or not. Thanks!
Glad you found what you needed. I, too, ordered the cargo cover for privacy. My LX 5-spd does not have tinted windows. I wish it did -- this and lack of keyless entry were the only "minuses" when I decided to go with it.
Still on my order list: side body cladding, cargo net, different wheel rims. I really dislike these LX rims!
There was an announcement on the http://www.hondanews.com web site. Only minor changes...expansion of the storage area under the radio, coat hangers added over the rear seats, and change of intertior color on one of the exterior colors (black instead of biege, if I remember correctly).
I emailed pix twice and they both came back undeliverable. The email address keeps coming back as "hotmail". I email pix all the time, so I can't figure out the problem. Quality control slipping? A few small issues: rubber gasket around inside of rear gate surrounding light falling off. Small plastic piece on bottom of passenger seat fell off. Rear (tailgate) handle paint is bubbled.Nothing that wait for 1st oil change appointment.
Phillyguy - Try sending them to me. I'm going to be doing quite a bit of html tomfoolery for the CR-V Olympics (the event was this past weekend). I'm sure I can get your pics up along with ours.
FWIW, I'm a fan of silver as well. It hides road salt, scratches, and other imperfections quite well. However, matching the color can be a pain in the bud. I recently painted by grill and a hard spare cover to match the body color. I got the paint through Paintscratch.com. It worked well, but the color is **slightly** lighter than the OEM paint. I also found that lots of sanding and a good, thick clear coat is required for a perfect match. I need to get some more of that for mine.
My cousin lost her CR-V to a car thief and is shopping around while waiting on the insurance check.
Carsdirect listed the EX at only $100 under MSRP. Priceline recommends a price about $700 under MSRP, or $1000 over invoice on the automatic. Because of this, she'll probably go with Priceline, but she's afraid of offering too much money for the car.
Does anyone have any experience buying a new CR-V in the San Francisco Bay area recently?
They don't seem to be adding in the destination charge when quoting the MSRP. When you click on the "more info" link on Priceline's site, they add it in and the MSRP is the same as the other sites ($22,760 for auto EX).
Now we will buy 2002 CRV EX and pay it tomorrow. However, you know the dealer always has lots of tricks to earn more money from us.
They told us we have the following useful options:
1. Tires&alloy wheel protection($189 for 3 years) Actually we think it should be included in standard warranty but dealer told us not. Is that true?
2. Painting Sealing(Something smooth to add on your car surface to protect your car) $159
3. Front Wheel mud protection(They said rear wheel mud is standard and this is optional but I can not find it on manual, can you tell me your car's situation?) $155
Another minor question is we got moonroof instead of standard sun roof. The sales man told us they are same. Is that true?
1. Tires&alloy wheel protection($189 for 3 years) Actually we think it should be included in standard warranty but dealer told us not. Is that true?
The tires should come with a warranty from the tire manufacturer. With my CR-V I got a small pamphlet from the tire company outlining the warranty information. Tires are not covered by the Honda 3 yr/36,000 mile warranty.
"Alloy wheel protection"? Sounds like they added the Wheel Lock accessory. You can get the Honda Wheel Locks for $30.
Or...they're trying to sell you tire and wheel theft insurance. I had a dealer try to do that to me (for $199!). When I asked if the theft wasn't already covered by the Comprehensive portion of my normal auto insurance they said "Well...yes...but this is Extra! coverage." Needless to say I refused to pay it.
2. Painting Sealing(Something smooth to add on your car surface to protect your car) $159
This is pure profit to the dealer. I'd refuse to pay for it. The CR-V already comes with a clearcoat layer. Just wash it regularly with a cleaner made for cars and wax it with a good quality wax.
3. Front Wheel mud protection(They said rear wheel mud is standard and this is optional but I can not find it on manual, can you tell me your car's situation?) $155
The CR-V doesn't come with Front Splash Guards. You can get the Honda Front Splash Guard accessory on the internet for $35 and they take about 15 minutes to install. They're worth the $35, but not worth $155.
I also had a dealer try to tell me that "all" Hondas sold in their area came with Front Splash Guards for an extra $139. They backed down when I pointed out that neither of the other two dealers I'd spoken with required them, and one dealer offered to match the internet price and install them for free.
Another minor question is we got moonroof instead of standard sun roof. The sales man told us they are same. Is that true?
If you check the Honda website (www.hondacars.com) and look at the Specifications for the CR-V the EX comes standard with a "Power Moonroof w/Tilt Feature" so the "moonroof" is standard.
Yeah don't fall for that extra accessory crap the dealer will try to sell you so they can inflate the selling price beyond msrp. You can order them on line far below what the dealer is trying to sell you for. If dealer insists you have to purchase them as part of the vehicle, walk away and go somewhere else. Lack of a better word its a scam.
any car can be hotwired, if the thief is willing to spend enough time, and if they know what they are doing. the immobilizer system makes it more difficult. It also prevents someone from duplicating your key and stealing your car.

Only time will tell!
Yes, I agree that the wording is odd. I'm just not sure if it means anything.

I too am rather fond of silver ... but from past experience, just don't scratch or dent it ... it's a b___h to match the paint.
Planned accessories: body side cladding, bug deflector ... do you need the cargo cover with the tinted rear glass?
