Pontiac G6 Lighting/Electrical

never had that prob but have heard the same from other owners. While do not own my 06 anymore it would be feasible to take it to a auto parts store like we have here in Texas called auto zone, they can run a free diag and tell you if any codes come up. That may narrow it down for you

    Hey kimchanell,

Did you get your lock problems resolved? My passenger-side rear door lock operates electrically about 50% of the time and the driver-side rear door lock does not have enough force to lock/unlock at all. I hear the lock accutator clicking on both rear doors. I can lock/unlock both manually, so the linkage is not binding.

  • Well, I bought my kid a fairly new car (40K miles, about 3 years old) a year ago. I ran great but suddenly we have had all kinds of problems. All of the gauges in the car will go crazy when driving, and all of the warning lights are going on and off (ABS, traction control, error message on the mileage area). The car has been in a GM shop for three weeks and they have changed the BCM, VCM, Onstar Module, and now the engine wiring harness (which I had to pay for, since it is not part of the powertrain).

Well, they called and said this would 100% fix the issue (after telling me that they were going to cover all of the costs, since it has taken three weeks at this time - didnt happen). So I start driving the car home and all of the same issues started back up again. Obviously, the dealership does not know what is wrong and I'm hoping that someone else has had the same issues so I can at least know what to do.

I emailed Pontaic and GM but have not heard back.

I bought a 09 G6 HTC a month ago with 39k mi. A dealer rep vehicle. The battery just seemed to go dead after a month. Classic clicking of the starter relay. I put 12V charger on it and it started and after an hour charge it started. I placed a volt meter on the battery with the engine running and it showed 14.18 V. I let the car sit for a day and it did the same thing. It's now on a charger. I'm afraid of getting stranded. I love this vehicle, just don't like this issue.
  • I have a 2007 Pontiac G6. The car has about 44K miles, I have replaced the battery 4 times, the first had a bad cell and was replaced under warranty. We have had a problem with the battery going dead especially when it rains, the other issue is that the factory installed remote start does not work. They ran a parabolic test but could not fine any drain. There are 2 codes in the computer P0650 & 1380 which they associate with the remote start. They want to remove the steering column to get to the control that is for the remote start but cannot tell me if this problem is related to the battery problem.

The car has a sunroof that had a problem with the gutters & the drain tubes when it was new, we had the fix done under the recall. Before the recall was performed, the rear carpet would get wet and it you went over a bump with the radio on the AM band there would be considerable noise/static from the radio.

The car has started fine since we had it back to the dealer until the rain we had this week and the again the batter had to be jumped. I believe I am getting a short when it rains, possibly from the sunroof which appears to be loose when it is closed although it doesn't appear to leak.

    Any Suggestions?

Do you plan on taking the car back to the dealership? If you give your VIN, I can look further into the situation. Keep me posted on your progress, thank you!

  • Yes, But I am going to take it to a different GM dealer that is closer to my home and I have a higher confidence level in.
Can you send me an email address and I will be happy to send you the VIN #?
  • did you ever get your car fixed? if so what was the problem
  • Nope. car has been in the shop for over nine weeks!! I talk to GM at least a few times a week, along with the dealership that has my car. GM is providing a rental car, so I'm not out of pocket.

The dealership thinks they have fixed the problem, but that is not the first time I've been told that.

Buy American? lolol Not again, unless it is a Ford. Had my truck for five years, not a single issue!

  • My son has the car at college so I have not have a chance to get it to another GM dealer. I did stop by and talk to them and they believe they can fix the problem.

  • The left rear brake and turn signal lights have stopped working on my 07 G6. Additionally, the key fob has stopped working to unlock the doors. It still works to open the trunk and lock the doors, but when performing these functions, the left rear lights do not flash. I had the bulbs replaced, but still not working. Any ideas what the problem might be and how to correct it? Thanks in advance for any assistance offered.
  • I just picked my Pontiac up from Voss Chevrolet in Centerville, Ohio. They determined that the problem was in the body control module. It appears the module was staying on for 40 minutes each time the car was shut off. I also had to replace another battery. With the electrical issues we have had with this car, my guess is that the BCM was faulty from day 1. The dealer from where the car was purchased preferred to blame an aftermarket stereo add-on than looking for a problem. When I had it in to them in August of this year it appears they were looking up the wrong tree, and I wasted a few hundred dollars with them. It appears I would have spent hundreds of additional $$ if I would had left it with that dealer.

With the money I have spent on this car between this repair, 5 batteries, and having to replace all of the brakes & rotors at 44,000 miles, GM has some work to do to earn my future business.
  • Have they checked the body control module? I just picked up my car and replacing this has appeared to fix the problem.
  • We purchased my husband's 2005 G6 3 years ago from Carmax and it has been back to Carmax multiple times. Each time, I have complained about the electrical. The last 2 times I took it in I complained about the remote not working, the front driver turn signal not working, the air temperature not working. In August Carmax repaired the airbag switch, power steering, and struts. They sent it to the dealer for the cruise control. I told them at that time that there was a problem still with the electrical (the remote wasn't working, the driver front turn signal worked intermittently, and the air temp was wrong). Got it back and all they did regarding that complaint was change the bulb in the turn signal. It worked intermittently for the next 3 months. On Thanksgiving the alarm started going off every time the car was locked. I took it for inspection and it failed due to the turn signal and the fog lamps. The mechanic replaced the bulbs in the fog lamps for $200+ but said there was no power going to the turn signal. Since we bought the extended warranty from Carmax I took it back there. They said that they fixed the turn signal (broken wires behind the bumper cover) but had to send it to the dealer because they couldn't get a BCM reading and believed that was the problem with the alarm and air temp. There was some back and forth between Carmax and the dealer because the dealer wanted $1400 to rewire the electrical and the warranty didn't want to cover it because they said it was caused by an after market alarm (which was in the car when we bought it from Carmax). Today, two weeks later, I get the call to pick up the car. At first the air temp read correctly but then I turned on the turn signal and it wouldn't work. The bulb lights up but doesn't flash. Now the fog lamps are not working even though they were when I brought it in. Then suddenly the air temp started to malfunction again. The dealer replaced the outside air temperature sensor and the engine wiring harness. Carmax replaced the battery because they said it was bad when they got it back from the dealer. I left the car at Carmax so that the master mechanic can look at it again on Tuesday. Any ideas what could be wrong with this thing? It has been nothing but a nightmare since we bought it. :lemon:
  • Update: The car came back from the dealer again and Carmax said that it still isn't fixed. The turn signal and the air temp are right (all the dealer did was clean a BCM connector) but the fog lights still don't work. So the dealer is sending it to the dealer again because they said it seems to be a "computer issue." Any ideas would be helpful. They've had the car a month. Thanks. :lemon:
  • Kittydog,

Are you working with a GM dealership on this? We're available to follow up with them and see how things are progressing with your vehicle.

  • Hi Sarah,

Thank you for your response. I am working with Carmax since that is where we bought the car and bought the extended warranty. They have been dealing with the local Chevy dealership, where the car is being sent back to.

  • I absolutely HATE this car!! I bought it 1 year ago and have had nothing but problem after problem with it!! First my locks to my back doors NEVER unlock or lock, I have to open back doors and push locks down every time then when we get back in car we have to climb over front seats to unlock doors so they will open, my brakes have to be changed every few months cause they go out prematurely, my front end sounds like a loud, deep sounding creaking noise all the time, there is always water on my backseat passanger floor, and to top it all off I cannot even drive the car in the dark because the drivers side headlight doesn't work on dim or bright and I have changed the bulbs about 6 times in the past year they work for a week to a month then it goes out AGAIN!!!!!! I CANNOT STRESS HOW MUCH I HATE THIS CAR! There should be tons of recalls on this car but pontiac has ignored and avoided all the consumers complaints, there is several that I have found with the same problems as I have!! I just want to drive this car into a wall! So what is Pontiac/GMC going to do for my problems you ask? Well I can purchase out of pocket the $300 wiring harness and have all the lighting rewired and pay the labor fee of $1400.00!! Did I mentioned I just bought this car a year ago for $14,900 and paid cash for it? Where is the CUSTOMER SERVICE???? :lemon:
  • The dealership just redid the wiring harness in our 2005 G6 GT and we are still having problems so don't expect to lay out all that money and have the problem resolved. Its going back to them for the 3rd time since the end of November. I'm glad we got the extended warranty with all the repairs this piece of junk has needed. Good luck.
  • Good morning, Kathy,

As you're working with Carmax, I will step back. However, if I can ever be of assistance, don't hesitate to get in touch with us via email.

    Take care,

  • Goodmorning mrsrandle1993,

I can understand your frustration. Have you worked with Customer Assistance in regards to these concerns yet? You may still be within your New Vehicle Limited Warranty, and we can check that if you were to send us the last 8 digits of your VIN through an email.

  • Good luck dealing with GM, After several emails and lack of promised return calls, GM's resolution was to offer me a discount on a new car which is useless to me as I wasn't planning be in the market for a new car for awhile. Its funny when you sell something to GM and there is an issue they feel should be covered under warranty they expect you to take care of it regardless of whether the equipment is still within the warranty period or not.

Looks to me like the new GM is the same as the old GM, I have been a loyal GM buyer for over 35 years with 15+ GM vehicles purchased in that time. I am extremely disappointed in the response from GM. I also have a 2008 Cadillac that I may sell before the warranty runs out, as the customer rep. explained to me that I might want to get rid of my G6 with all of the problems we have had and the warranty is gone. I guess 44,000 is the useful expected life of a GM car.
Thank You GM for rewarding me for my 35 years of loyalty.
  • The dealer replaced the body control module. It is one of the main computers on the car. It was staying on too long and draining the battery. It has been 2 months no problems yet.
  • Sorry to inform you after 2.5 months my problem is back again. My only hope is that the car catches on fire some night while no one is in it and burns to the ground. Of course GM will not stand behind their product.
  • I am having problems with the lowbeam headlights. I have changed the drivers side 3 times, passenger side 2 times and 1 low beam headlight relay since October 2011. I need so assistance of others who are further along in the process of getting this problem fixed.. Any suggestions??
