look at Corning Glass Works (GLW). They make the glass for the iPad.

I think Corning Gorilla glass is used by most of the smartphone and Pad makers.

I spent some time this morning at Verizon Wireless. I played with the New iPad and the new Samsung Galaxy 7.7. They both have brilliant displays. I could not tell any difference. For my needs I am leaning toward the Samsung 7.7 for these reasons.

Open architecture with Android OS. Google maps with GPS with turn by turn directions free. I can buy Apps from several sources. My Kindle books will download via free Kindle App. All my CDs are ripped to MP3. I have never owned any iTunes. Samsung is just half the weight at 12 ozs. Smaller footprint will fit in big pocket. Early reviews say new iPad gets rather hot under heavy usage. Verizon not offering iPad with 4G service yet. I can also get just a monthly data package with the Samsung tablet. I don't really want cell phone service. $499 with just a $30 per month data contract for 2 years. Which includes text messages.

    Gary,

The only thing I'll say is that after my experience with iPad and iPhone and the miserable experience I had with the Droid2 is all I want going forward in both spaces are Apple products.

    Gary,
I think that Samsung Galaxy is a realy nice device. But, if you want something small, you might as well get a powerful smartphone with a huge display... Like the Samsung NOTE. Otherwise, you need to know that the Android apps are NOT the same as the Apple apps.

Also, the media is dead wrong about the iPad getting too hot. They are making a ridiculous and unfair mountain out of a molehill. It gets warm, about 10-12 degrees warmer than iPad2... and MUCH cooler than many popular laptops... and well within every measurement of normal parameters. The media has run with this, and they should be ashamed of themselves... but Apple is a huge target, so they are taking their shots.

Bottom line... Get the iPad and the upcoming iPhone5. That's what I am doing.

    The iPad is absolutely amazing.

My situation is I don't want a cell phone. I hate them. Never use the one I have. I want Internet access on the road along with good GPS. The NAV in my Sequoia is near worthless. $500 for a an up to date DVD that is dated 2009. So an accurate mapping device with good access to points of interest and gas prices. Along with checking my email, reading my kindle books is what I am looking for. I am NOT a fan of Consumer Reports. Many people think they know what they are doing. They have the Media's attention and that is what will get to the public. I doubt it has much impact on iPad sales. As it is a beautiful device. Just does not do what I want.

    Gary,

The iPad will indeed do everything you want... Do it best... And do more.

You have a choice of using AT&T or Verizon. You can use Google maps, and for a tiny fee of 99 cents, you can also get the highly-rated TeleNav GPS Navigation app made specifically for the iPad... and you can even upgrade to the high-end "plus" version for only 9.99/entire year... that's practically free!

As far as email goes.... iPad is perfect for email. And, as a reader, it is also perfect, as it can use your choice of the Kindle app, the Barnes & Noble Nook app, or the iBooks app, or all three!

Like I said, iPad will do everything you want... Do it best... And do more.

You deserve the best, and can easily afford it. That means iPad.

    Gary,

Doesn't a Kindle Fire give you what you are looking for? Otherwise you may need to wait for a smaller iPad if Apple goes that route or see what Microsoft will offer. I like the large iPad though. Once it can't fit in my pocket I'd rather have a 10" tablet.

Len... Gary wants a very good GPS, in addition to other features he stated. Kindle does not have it. Verizon (or AT&T) iPad is his best choice. He can download high-end GPS NAV apps like TeleNav, Tom Tom, and Navigon.

The Samsung Galaxy he posted about is a terrific device, if he must stay with the smaller size. In that size range, nothing is currently better, IMHO. However, waiting for a smaller iPad might pay off, as I have posted about that potential product several times... But the wait could likely be a long one (end of year or next Spring).

As you and I both know, the latest iPad is very versatile, and would offer Gary a huge bang for his buck, but if small form factor is a must, he will do well to choose the "Sammy".

    It's a fantastic small tablet!

First time I've een an outside article net Apple's cash against earnings to get the real multiple. I do it all the time and it's how I value a company. I add debt to market cap or deduct cash from market cap to get the real trading multiple. I also use EBITDA or op income. If 10X is indeed the multiple as per the article than the multiple on EBITDA or Operating Income is absurdly low at 7-8X. It should be double that. In effect at that multiple Apple needs 4-5 years or so to amass enough cash to buy itself back from the public. That is the reason the stocks overall direction has nowhere to go but up. At some point in the not too distant future Apple's cash will approach it's current market cap at its current growth rate, even with the dividend and buyback program.

The other story is how the new iPad is a data hog. I've been watching Fox Business while working at home and they've done the story at least 4 times.

Here's the drill - the new iPad uses 4G on ATT. It's much faster so people are going through their data faster than expected. If you stream a movie, one can use 600 MB an hour and people are already reaching their data plan limits. Somehow, it's Apple's fault.

Yeah... I am surprised at Fox, because they've been among the worst at the way they are digging into the iPad.

Fox has a history of tending to dig at California... so it could be that they see Apple as a "California company", but I admit that's reaching... I really don't know why they've been smacking Apple around like that. It's weird, and it is definitely not "fair and balanced". CNBC was also ridiculous about it yesterday.

    Hello Tony...

Nice to hear from you. Hope you are doing great!

There is no "adjustment" for that... HOWEVER, we NEVER give up... so, I have heard that some of the screen protectors might help with that... because they place a thin barrier between your finger and the screen. No guarantee it will work, but they are not a whole lot of money, and there is even one that is anti-glare (which is actually a very nice feature for the iPad anyway), and it is typically available at the Apple Retail Store, along with other electronics stores. I saw it at the Apple Retail Store where I bought my iPad, and it looked great on the device!

If you are near an Apple Retail Store, you might be able to get the sales rep to put it on the iPad for you... that way if it gets messed up when putting it on, they would be responsible and have to give you another one. If you put it on the iPad yourself and mess it up in the process, you are S.O.L.

Anyway, a quality screen protector might just solve the problem, so it might be worth a try! :)

Thanks......If the new one is as touchy as mine is, then in time it becomes an annoyance.....One that can be lived with, but certainly does not put the mac book in the forgotten bin :) Tony
  • tagmantagman Member Posts: 8,441
Well, Tony... for what it's worth... On my new iPad, I have not even once noticed the screen being too touchy or too sensitive, and the browser has not responded to anything I didn't want it too. In fact, it's been damned perfect so far.

Only thing that I discovered was that when I use GarageBand, I have to remember to go to settings and disable the multi-fingered gesture feature. This is because it is normal to use multi fingers on some musical instruments, but the app doesn't automatically disable the multi-finger gesture setting, so as a result, the iPad sometimes responds to the use of multiple fingers as though they were a deliberate command... such as sliding the screen to something entirely different on the next page.

I must say, with all honesty, that the device is awesome, but I still think it could use better printing features. I did find a Canon printer app that allows direct printing of photos taken by the iPad, and the new AirPrint feature on the some of the newest printers is supposed to solve the whole problem anyway. But, it would be great if people could just use the printers they already have, IMHO.

And, I do hope that Microsoft makes a "Word" app for the iPad. I loaded Apple's "Pages" word processor app, and it's pretty darned good (but it's not Word, that's for sure) and it even saves documents as a Word .doc file or a pdf file and can email those files directly from the application. I tried it, and it works perfectly.

I absolutely love the speed of the new iPad... it's very fast... and it's a genuine pleasure to use the Safari browser, and the screen size is big enough to really be able to enjoy it. I had formerly used the Nook Color as my tablet, and although it truly has some very nice features, this new iPad simply blows it away.

Anyway, stay in touch, and good luck.

That is where I am right now. Do I really want a touch screen with all the fingerprints etc? Or an ultra light laptop? I have lugged around a Dell Inspiron laptop on vacation for going on 6 years. It still works great. What ever I get will replace it while traveling. I could get the iPad and one of those great aluminum keyboards. Why not just get a very light laptop. I hate typing on the tablet. That is why I sent the Kindle Fire to my grandson. Him and his dad love it. The only appeal a tablet has is super up to date NAV. I am tired of going to restaurants and gas stations that have been out of business for 3 years. I am not convinced the NAV app on the iPad are as up to date as Google Maps. I know NavTeq is WAAAAAY behind. I have a Magellan with the latest maps that are a good 2 years behind. So I am still searching. Over the years I have dumped enough money into the leading edge to be a lot more cautious in retirement.

    Gary...
I have the iPad with two cases. One is by ZAGG and contains a built-in keyboard I will use when I travel and/or need to type a lot. It is quality, and well-rated and not the typical junk that you often see. I also have the Apple aluminum keyboard, if needed, but the aluminum ZAGG keyboard in the case has been awesome so far. Otherwise I use a beautiful leather case that allows the iPad to be used in 7 different positions!

Google maps is standard on the iPad, and the optional Navigon GPS navigation app is a very heavy-duty application. I have a Navigon app on my Android phone and it is state-of-the-art, with real-time traffic. I have no doubt that there is a fabulous NAV for the iPad.

EDIT: This new keyboard case looks interesting. Just announced!!

Here is a short Dow Jones article on the next iPhone:

    Apple's Next Version Of iPhone Will Feature Bigger 4.6-Inch Screen - ReportFont size: A | A | A
    10:04 PM ET 3/21/12 | Dow Jones
SEOUL (Dow Jones)--Apple Inc.'s (AAPL) next version of its iPhone will have a 4.6-inch display, larger than the current 3.5-inch screen, the Maeil Business Newspaper reported Thursday, citing an unnamed industry source.

The latest model of Apple's popular iPhone will be launched this summer and the device will use liquid crystal displays rather than organic light-emitting diode screens, the report said.

The paper also said that the iPhone maker has already placed orders with its display suppliers.

The world's two largest display makers, Samsung Mobile Display and LG Display Co. (034220.SE), which count Apple as a major customer, declined to comment to the Maeil newspaper about whether they had received any orders.

Fantastic Charlie!!!! I recently read the screen would be larger than on the current model and would likely be 4", and I posted that here... but 4.6" is even larger than I expected. That's about the size of the screen on my current phone and I am thrilled beyond words if it is true. The current tiny 3.5" iPhone screen is no longer in line with industry trends and consumer demands. Whichever improved screen size is offered, I am soooo positive that I want to get the iPhone 5.

Here is another article, but this one puts some doubts upon the 4.6" size, and suggests that 4" may still be the next screen size. Personally I really hope it's 4.6", because I am used to the larger screen On my current phone and absolutely love it.

Looking forward, I think we can all agree that AAPL shares are now fairly solid at $600... and IMO anything under is a BUY. This week, and this morning have given opportunities to buy at levels under $600, and there might still be some ahead... although I think they will be more rare as time moves forward.

Opportunities to buy AAPL shares under $600 will be soon be going, going, gone.

    I just ordered it.

As I posted, I use the ZAGG FOLIO iPad case, which won 2012 CES awards (Innovation: Design and Engineering Showcase Awards), but I just pre-ordered this new Crux360 case. If it is nicer than the ZAGG FOLIO, I will return the ZAGG to Best Buy. If it is not better, I will ship it back to Crux.

I think it is very encouraging to see AAPL shares hold their own very nicely in spite of what has been some overall negative market action recently.

Even with this recent down market, consider that the VIX hasn't gotten worse, so I don't see signs of trouble.

This means to me that as soon as the overall market gets back into positive motion, AAPL will never see share prices under $600 again.

The Apple product pipeline is in good shape, and we will see product updates to almost every single product. In addition to the the new dividend. That's all terrific. I think Tim Cook and crew are doing a fantastic job.

I was watching CNBC (yes I still watch it since it's the best of all the choices) and the guy was saying something like someone had a trigger finger. Instead of 100 lots, they must have added a bunch of zeroes. Does that remind you of anyone you know? :)

    LOL... Hmmm...

I think it was a glitch at the BATS exchange? I was personally trading a little at the moment it happened, and then my activity was halted, along with everyobne else's, and when it resumed it cost me about $300... not enough to get me even slightly upset, because it could have been much worse, but it does show us that there are continued dangers.

BTW, I also watch CNBC. When I set up my Scottrade Elite software, I setup all my preferred data windows in their respective spaces, and I deliberately left a small rectangle open in the lower right corner. In that spot, I placed a small 4" X6" PIP (picture in picture) of CNBC. So, along with all the streaming data, and charts... I can watch CNBC (or anything else) on the same screen... it's very cool.

The trades were reversed by nasdaq. I've never heard of a fat finger trade before. And it's confusing. Someone put a sell order in at 90% of the market? Makes no sense. Everytime I see something like this I remind myself to never do anything at market.
  • cyclone4cyclone4 Member Posts: 2,302
Yes, I just read the story about BATS IPO (today) a few minutes ago on E-Trade. The Wall Street Journal wrote an article today about high speed trading and that there is an SEC investigation into the matter. Unfortunately, the investigation is in its early stages. They have to put a STOP on this crap. Those SOB's (high speed trading companies) do have an unfair advantage.

So Len, was it a BATS problem with APPL or was it some jerk with fat fingers?

Btw, it's rather obvious today that some fund(s) are trying to drive AAPL down at this time since the overall market is doing fairly well.

They have to put a STOP on this crap. Those SOB's (high speed trading companies) do have an unfair advantage.

Absolutely... Over 70% of the activity is due to HFT. Look at the way APPL shares take erroneous intra-day "dives"... on a regular basis, and then miraculously recover. What is really happening is that the HFT computers are "sweeping" profits from the small traders that are not equipped to handle that kind of situation. They sell during those massive and sudden declines, and then just when the HFT computers caluculate they have "swept" enough money from those poor suckers, the stock "miraculously" rebounds within minutes, and sometimes within seconds!

Also, there are HFT computers that work in tandem. One system shorts and another buys at the dips, and then they can profit as the stock dips and then also when the stock rebounds. The more movement, the more they profit from that movement. They literally manipulate and control their own profits.

Is that fair? NO! It's BS.

That is interesting Charlie. I think Apple is typically able to fix small ssues like that with an update. Well see.

The media is once again making it into a bigger deal than it is. CNCBC is currently reporting it as "yet another problem" as the very moment I am writing this. Truth is, there wasn't a "first" problem, so how can this be "yet another" problem.

In the end, I think the important thing is that there are, IN FACT, no real-life major issues that anyone has actually found, which would jeapordize the product... even though the media has been trying to sensationalize the warmer operating temperature, and now the battery charge indication.

BTW, I love the iPad so far. It is a fantastic device.

EDIT: CNBC is now saying the battery issue is a "new concern"... well, I guess that sounds a little better, but we'll see how much they exaggerate it.

I want to share with you guys something wonderful that has happened to me since yesterday. I found out through a blog from someone now living in Saco , ME that there is a website called Politsani.com. I had no idea that such a site was in existence until today after I had a few email exchanges with this man from ME.

This means nothing to you folks, but it means the world to me. This is the town where I was born and spent the first 11 years of my life in southern Albania. I am blown away. It brings back so many wonderful memories and at the same time reiminds me of the incredible contrasts in my life. I encourage you to take a look at the photos, listen to some of the the songs and more on the website. Believe it or not, I use to sing some of those traditional polyphonic Greek, folk songs with older Greeks (from Politsani of course) when I came to this country. These songs are specific to my town, Politsani. I also use to solo these songs to the old ladies in Brockton, MA and they loved it. I can still sing them but unfortunately, I forgot most of the lyrics.

I am pretty sure that a couple of those old photos has my father as a young man in his 20s. You can see on the recent color photos, both the beauty and how rugged the landscape is. I hope what I am posting here is not out of line.

Btw, I have had CNBC on much of the day, but I have it muted and once in a while I look to see if there is anything important showing. I missed the battery story on it. I have been concentrating on something MUCH more important most of the day today as my previous post indicates.

I also love the new iPad. I have had zero issues with it. Btw, you and Len should download the new Angry Birds HD apps. They are rather spectacular. I am not into games, but my son told me about it today. My oldest granddaughter (4 years old) loves to play the Angry Birds.

Charlie... that's amzing! The website has some beautiful and interesting photos... and it is so sad to think that the historic events of the world, which really weren't all that long ago, changed people's lives so dramatically, in many cases tragically.

Whenever I read about WWII, I am totally shocked that so much evil could exist and actually be perpetrated upon so many millions of human beings, while much of the world never even lifted a finger to stop it, and in fact, too much of the world supported it. I am still shocked when I consider that soooo much of the world still turns a blind eye to the evil that so clearly still exists.

Anyway, I think it will be interesting to explore that website more at a later time. The geography of the area looks so beautiful.

Thanks for sharing that. I am glad you did.

EDIT: Already downloaded the new ANGRY BIRDS late last night. Fun.

This is nuts. High speed trading has to be greatly modified if it's going to continue at all. I really believe that the way it is now structured encourages big time cheating and manipulating. Meanwhile, our regulatory agencies are sleep-walking through all this mess. This really sickens me.

Good luck on the book...and write your visit off as research ! I finished my first book a couple of weeks ago...now I think I will write one. :)

The only reason I have not visited a lot sooner is because of the fear that myself and my family had that there could still be some people still alive there who were communists and would try to harm us. I know for a fact that the communists in the town were very angry that we managed to escape. But things have now changed dramatically, so I think it will be fine.

I share your thrill when I find something that enables me to travel to a place from long ago, with many memories.....The two gentlemen in the little movie appeared to be doing the same thing you now want to do, and you could hear their excitement when they were speaking of `building a house`....It just goes to show the imprints that a person picks up in their early life, never go away, and beckon a person to return....

The biggest impression I got, was remembering you harrowing escape , and how over the years you have made such a wonderful life for yourself and loved ones...It makes me so respectful of the people who got you on your way, and the courage it took to do so......That is what bring `tears` to my eyes.....Tony
