What is the initial price per share... before the market has its way?

    8.50-9.50 as per Form S1

This action includes the modification (slight redesign) of the antenna as soon as possible, and recalling the 2 million phones that have been sold so far, before that number gets so large that it would be a nightmare to ever recall them. Or, by giving something to those 2 million folks that have purchased the phones so far... perhaps something like a gift card from the Apple Online Store. This type of action (or something similar) would assure that all the latest phones would then include the new corrected design, and the problem would be gone forever.

    I hear you TM!!!

My research shows that QLIK will be available on the open market Friday morning... not tomorrow.

    Can you confirm this?

How does a "Gift Card" improve reception?
  • tagmantagman Member Posts: 8,441
It doesn't improve reception... it just satisfies the customer that is already pretty much happy with the phone, but is hearing all the negative media hype. Customers like that don't want to give up their products, but they sure don't want to think they got "taken" either. Giving them something generally satisfies them, and it's good for the corporate image.

The smaller percentage of customers that might actually be unhappy would be better handled by offering, as an alternative, a trade-in to the revised model.

Regardless of how Apple handles the situation, the point is that the issue won't just disappear on its own. Something may need to be done to satisfy the 2 million folks that already own the "compromised" phones, and of course Apple should begin selling revised (without the antenna design-flaw) phones as soon as possible.

My understanding is the antenna was moved to the lower part of the phone to comply with new FCC rules. This is to protect US from radiation. It also diminishes reception. Not sure Apple can make it as good as older versions of the iPhone. Folks in fringe areas will not like it and those in areas with stronger signals will not notice a problem.

Apple decided to make the beautiful band that almost completely surrounds the outer edge of the iPhone double as the antenna, thus leaving the inside of the phone free of an internal antenna. The problem with this otherwise great idea is that when held in a specific (but unfortunately common) manner, the hand's contact with the antenna (inherently at the lower left side of the phone, by design) diminishes the antenna's effectiveness, and the reception becomes compromised. Under strong signal circumstances this reduction isn't a concern, but anyone using a cell phone knows that signal strength isn't always ideal... and it is under these circumstances that the antenna design is more likely to compromise the reception if the hand is holding the phone (and thus contacting the exterior antenna band) in the position now known as the "death grip".

A redesign would be simple, IMO... an ever-so-slight recess of the lower left section of the antenna would allow it to be covered at that area with a different material that would essentially shield it from contact. This material could be clear, and thus retain the beautiful appearance of the new iPhone.

You could be right. The Nasdaq IPO Calendar showed the 15th, but I really don't know how that works. Can you share your source? Either way, I will try on Thursday just in case...

Apple will finally talk about the antenna issue tomorrow.

I am not sure that they will properly handle the situation, but just in case they do step to the plate, I have just purchased 50 shares of AAPL. It is possible that the stock will react one way or another tomorrow. If it goes down, I've just purchased it at a pretty decent price anyway, and if it goes up, I'll make a few quick bucks.

    Should be interesting.

This is beginning to look a lot like the imaginary Toyota unintended acceleration fiasco. The media is piling on and Democratic senators (Chuck Schumer) are calling for investigations, etc.

What do Toyota and Apple have in common? Both are NON UNION !! Just saying.

Not to mention that Apple was investigated for running a sweat shop manufacturing facility in China. Don't they know one of their own, Al Gore is a board member. That should be a signal to back off. Besides, when did Congress pass a law against selling worthless electronic gadgets?

The stock market rallied to about steady today after being down over 100 points on the Dow. The biggest good news came from BP which stated that no more oil was spilling into the Gulf after the new cap was closed. There will be sensitive testing for the next couple days to see if it will hold. The stock market (especially the oil companies) loved this news. BP surged 10% on the news. There were also reports that Goldman Sachs had reached a settlement with the government and the financials rallied near the close.

Let's all hope and pray that this latest effort will be a permanent fix for the monumental environmental disaster in the Gulf.

    Charlie,

Did you read the link I put up a few weeks back about how this whole oil flow was within inches of being stopped from the get-go. Really sad that it was that close and it missed. But this is great news and let's hope the cap holds and can be left in place.

Still bullish? I've gone into a new trading pattern of buying heavily before earnings season and like Tag, I'm loving Citi more and more. All the rumors and rhetoric in the world can't hold up against strong earnings. It's been my belief that earnings will be there because incremental profit per incremental dollar of revenue will be higher than ever because of the reduced employment and cost efficiencies companies wrung out during the recession. We are seeing it in my company where we will have an all-time record profit year. But we w'ont hire or be as aggressive as we were pre recession until we see where Obama is going with taxes and how solid the recovery really is. I remain very dis-trustful of Obama's intentions and most small businesses owners I know locally (I'm talking 10-100mln service businesses here) feel the same way and are also not hiring, even though most are having strong years. I think if we all thought we were on firmer ground in the recovery and had a president who was not intending to raise taxes this recovery would have created more jobs by now.

I'm working thru my 2nd month of having the LS for free. We had wanted a black car with alabaster interior and telios wheels (LWB AWD model) but the only one they have lacks the ML stereo. They have a striking smoky granite/black and with the telios wheels it looks awesome (this I believe is what you have) and we are going back to see it tomorrow and will most likely take it. Lexus will waive my first payment and cut the lease access fee in half for me as I have until Auguts 11th on the crrent car. They also have the deep sea blue/alabaster with the ML. Going to look at it but it's a real longshot. This car to me looks it's best in smokey granite, even moreso than black.

Been off the board because I'm having a lot of problems with my mother. Too long a story to get into but she has short-term memory loss (though she maintains a sharp short -term memory for things important to her) and we have been trying to decide the best way to proceed. I'm an only child so the decision wrests with me. I think we are going to choose a homecare attendant for 6-8 hours a day as she is pretty adamant about staying home and still functions well in daily activites. I tell you - it's not easy watching someone get old.

Finance bill favors interests of unions, activists

The financial reform bill expected to clear Congress this week is chock-full of provisions that have little to do with the financial crisis but cater to the long-standing agendas of labor unions and other Democratic interest groups.

Principal among them is a measure to make it easier for unions, environmental groups and other activist organizations that hold shares to put their representatives on the boards of directors of every corporation in the United States.

That ought to make things run better.

"I think we are going to choose a homecare attendant for 6-8 hours a day "

I have been in your position, as an only child, & agree with your thinking. My mother lived in her home until she broke a hip & expired at 94. She was much happier at home instead of a human warehouse. Hopefully, you live close enough to check on her & her care giver at various hours instead of regular times. That keeps the care giver on the ball as she never is sure when you will show up. As Mom cared for you, it is your privilege to care for her. I wish you both well. :)

Len, No I don't believe I saw that link. If this that's the case, it is really SAD!

But we w'ont hire or be as aggressive as we were pre recession until we see where Obama is going with taxes and how solid the recovery really is. You obviously DO NOT approve of Obama. In my opinion, he is blamed for everything that goes wrong. People have to realize that this nation and the world was on the brink of a cataclysmic depression. It will take a long time to get back to "normal" again. I am still bullish but my bullishness has been tempered quite a bit. I believe it will be a slow process, but the overall trend will be higher. I strongly believe that we saw the low for this year several weeks ago. I am holding on to most of my stocks with the strong confidence that we WILL NOT see a "double-dip". When I sold everything in the summer of 2008, I could see that a cataclysm was about to start. I see NO such thing now. If by some chance it does take place, I am not betting the farm as I have been telling Tag. As you have seen on my posts recently I have been buying more AAPL. I loved what Jobs had to say today. It was rather amazing that AAPL was trading smartly higher today when the Dow was down about 250 points. It finally succumbed to the pressure and ended the day just below $250, but that is not bad. I think I will make very good money with this stock.

They have a striking smoky granite/black and with the telios wheels it looks awesome (this I believe is what you have) and we are going back to see it tomorrow and will most likely take it.

Yes indeed! This is what I have. I absolutely love the car except that I wish it had AWD. Next car, for sure!

I had a small taste of what you are going through with my father several years ago. He fell broke his kneecap and it was all downhill from that point on. We had to place him in a nursing home. He also developed dementia and it was very, very sad. He lived in the nursing home for almost 3 years and he died in February, 2003. I hope everything goes well as possible for you at this difficult time.

Tag, please explain to me how you did this. I thought that it opened Over $12. So how did you make $thousands? What was its high?

    Charlie...

This is exactly what I did...

I had an order in place for thousands of shares at the open... but the stock's availability was delayed. Once the stock became available, my purchase was executed at $12.00/share. As soon as it went over $13.00/share, I sold, resulting in an instant profit of slightly over $1.00 per every one of my thousands of shares... thus, as I posted, I profited thousands of dollars within a very short time span. :shades:

Much thanks to 2001gs430, my good friend from Toronto, Ontario, Canada for the recommendation! He made hiimself a substantial gain today, and truly deserved it! :):D

I know where you're coming from. My 89yo Mom fell in May, hit her head and about a month later, she had seizures which landed her in the H. Well, come to find she had bleeding between the brain and skull causing pressure and her speech was affected. My brother lives with her and was the sole caregiver and was contemplating home care but she is recovering nicely, Thank GOD!

Anyway, my wife works for a home care agency that is quite good in the Princeton area if you need. Let me know.

    God Bless her.

As I've stated, I am going long on QLIK. My target is a buyout offer Qliktech get from one of the big boys, or around five years from now when the product dominated the sector or both, and the share should be 3-4 times today's closing. Basically I am going for the home run with this puppy, and hopefully I can help the cause by landing some large QV enterprise deals for my firm along the way.

On a hot lazy Sunday afternoon I observed , on the drive back from the farm to Charleston, alot of activity--boating, families fishing in the creeks, traffic galore, and just generally an upbeat economy....Now with the BP disaster almost over, I would think the nation will get back to a more positive outlook...I, on the other hand , have planted numerous Red Cedar trees --and a terrible drought has been going on since spring, so alot of hand watering --for me, and then the thought of a hurricane (to break the drought) plus OCTOBER to look forward to...That keeps me tempered in my enthusiasm , but just barely :) Tony

I talked to a Verizon engineer over the weekend. He is out here on vacation. He said the iPhone 4 has been the best thing going for Verizon. It has taken a lot of customers from at&t wireless. Steve needs to face reality. The phone was poorly engineered. The market does not like his stance on this problem. Will Apple do anything about it? Does not look like they will. Will it give the Droid a big shot in the arm?

Maybe if the phone was better engineered instead of being left in bars by irresponsible workers, it could have been a less problematic product. And Jobs certainly can't take the heat...he should thank his lucky stars the masses are true sheeple when it comes to his products.

I am of the opinion that anyone that would wait in line to buy anything, is running shy of a full load. Waiting over night for something like an iPhone or iPad just seems so ignorant to me. People have too much money to waste.
  • fintailfintail Member Posts: 58,637
These days are still loaded with easy credit. The financiers aren't going to let go of their stranglehold due to a little crisis.

I wouldn't wait in line for a glitchy phone or a tablet computer that is less capable than a netbook costing a third of the price either.

I have owned an iPhone for quite a while, but this time, instead of getting the latest iPhone 4, I purchased the Android HTC EVO 4G. It is definitely soooo much better than the iPhone, and it is arguably the best phone available.

The rear camera is 8 megapixels, and both the front and rear cameras are significantly higher resolution than the iPhone, the camera comes bundled with all kinds of editing tools, shoots video in high-def, has HDMI output, boasts a significantly bigger screen than the iPhone, plays Flash (iPhone can't), Android OS is so awesome, has nearly every app you can dream of available at the Android market (very similar to the app store) has speech to text capability, has an integrated "kick-stand", more customization capabilities than any iPhone, blazing fast processor, replaceable battery (iPhone can't), SD card for replaceable storage (iPhone can't), and amazing reception (no antenna issues with this puppy), 3 times faster than iPhone 4 internet speed, and it is the world's first 4G-capable phone, compared to the iPhone 4 which only uses 3G.

So far, I love the HTC EVO 4G, and I wouldn't trade it for an iPhone 4 at any price, even if the iPhone was free.

Here's a link you will enjoy.

That is what my cousin the Verizon engineer told me. I was not sure if it was just company loyalty or factual. Sounds like he was telling it like it is. He was also excited about the newest 4G technology being tested, called LTE (Long-Term Evolution). He was pretty jazzed about it. Sounds like all the carriers will get on board with it. 100Mbps down and 50 up. So very very fast.

  • gagricegagrice Member Posts: 31,450
You got me. My cousin was talking so fast about all that is coming down the line with Verizon, that it was mind boggling. I am just glad I am retired from all that. It was starting to be a challenge keeping up with all the changes in communications when I retired in 2006. All I know is he was real happy about the problems at Apple and the iPhone. It has become a real cat fight between the carriers it seems. He worked 11 years for Sprint before he took a job at Verizon. He is in Maryland and likes Verizon a lot better. It looks like Sprint is the company to beat right now with their early iteration of 4G. Though calling it 4G is debatable.

The real glory of the HTC EVO 4G is that is is blazing fast even when used on 3G... so the lure of 4G doesn't even matter all that much, even if it is technically the world's first 4G phone. I have no doubt that the next generations will be even better, but for now it is arguably the very best phone out there for soooooo many terrific reasons beyond its 4G capability.

BTW, to answer Steve's question... Android is the operating system used on quite a few phones now... and the number is growing fast, because Android is a fantastic OS.

I believe I posted an article a month or two ago on the comparison between the new iPhone and the EVO 4G. It was stated at that time that the EVO was the better choice, but that the iPhone would still far surpass it in sales due to the name brand and the love affair that people have with the iPhone. Perhaps now with the iPhone problem the game will change. I am seriously thinking of getting the EVO 4G (currently use the first generation Google phone and I like it) myself in the near future even though I own a lot of AAPL stock. There is no other way to say it. I am a "walking contradiction" :confuse: .

    Charlie,
In all fairness, even though the HTC EVO 4G is a fantastic phone, the iPhone4 would still provide a terrific experience. Often the service provider is the bigger first decision. For me, Sprint offers a huge advantage in coverage, but for most it's Verizon or AT&T.

I thoroughly enjoyed my previous generation iPhone, and this next generation is even better. While I, and many others, obviously recommend the EVO as the better choice, I am certain you would love the iPhone4.

Great thoughts on AAPL! You should buy a lot more at these prices, especially since you are a long-term AAPL investor. I would expect earnings to be spectacular and that should ultimately boost the share price, although there could always be a short-lived negative response, as happens to many stocks right after they report.

I am convinced QLIK will make you money in the long run, and is a terrific investment. I am not expecting to buy any right now, as I am now invested in Citi in the multiple six-digit arena, and I am intensely focusing on the big C. It is the only stock I own, and I am doing well with it already, as I have bought on the biggest dips, but I am willing to take this risk as I am shooting for a really big reward further down the road. That said, I still have my eye on QLIK, and might just dedicate a certain amount of money as a long-term investment in the near future. Also, if AAPL dips really big, although I don't expect that to happen, I might then be tempted to buy some.

Good luck to you... and our Canadian friend as well!
