I had three buys in, one at 300, 1 at 302 and 1 at 304. I got the $304. In case the stock falls off I left the other 2 buys in.
Well guys. I could no longer stand it. I bought another 20 shares. I went to the market and got filled at $311.50 a few minutes ago. The way I am rationalizing it is that if this is going to at least $400, what is the big deal about buying it a few dollars per share cheaper.
The value of the dollar may not be driven down as much as was previously expected. I think this could be putting a wrench in the gears. Between the Chinese and the Fed, it's harder to predict. A stronger dollar wouldn't generally support higher gold or commodities prices.
BTW, brace yourself for a possible nasty roller coaster ride over the next several days for the stock market... possible correction... and buying opportunities.
You guys that predicted 11,000 are already correct. I recall you increased your prediction to 11,200. I originally predicted a range of 11,250 to 11,500... so I have gone just a little further out on a limb than you.
We'll see. We need these banks to quit screwing around.
Bank stocks are the wildcard. I dumped my BAC shares early this morning, and I am glad I did. Looks like the stock is going to be a caged tiger, and I have no desire to mess with this stock. It's uncharted territory with no compass.
Now that the FBI and other government agencies are poking into BofA's books, it's going to be a circus.
There are plenty of healthy stocks out there... I don't need BAC in my portfolio.
Regarding your prediction..duly noted. Let's all hope for some great holiday market action to the upside.
I also made the most bullish prediction for the market by year's end.
These dips are buying opportunities. Sure, we may very well see a correction anytime now, and everyone here should be ready for that... but I haven't been this bullish in a long time.
As I mentioned previuosly, BAC has become a stock that spooks me, and it might do OK, but I just don't like it anymore.
Go AAPL !!
I might just have to buy the brand new MacBook Air that Apple just announced today... it's small like Charlie's iPad, but it has a real keyboard!
Try and buy it at an Apple store, but be careful of your emotions after, as you would want to put ALL your funds into apple.....Last year that happened to me, but I refrained...
The air was a bit expensive so I got the mac book pro, and then treated my son in law to one....expensive Christmas..
I hope I can extract myself from wfc, as I did get out of C before the earnings...I posted that here but for some reason I didn`t see it posted...Banks are a pitfall unless you just hit them right quickly....Tony
I am likely to buy the new smaller MacBook Air after 90 days, when Apple releases all those Apps to the Macs. What a brilliant idea! It will do everything that an iPad can do, but with a keyboard! It's just what I had hoped for.
Like you, I bought a MacBook Pro last Christmas... but for my daughter. She loves it! She previously had a Dell, and I have to admit that there is no comparison in the quality and performance. The MacBook Pro is far superior.
I am sure looking forward to that new generation MacBook Air!
You also have a very good feel for the electronic stuff, so I hope you post your thoughts for people like myself who know nothing other than what I like and don`t like...Tony
I might just have to buy the brand new MacBook Air that Apple just announced today... it's small like Charlie's iPad, but it has a real keyboard!
TM, it looks like we disagree on this keyboard thing almost as much as we do on our political philosophy . Seriously though, I don't really care about a real keyboard to add weight etc. I actually find it easier to type on the virtual keyboard of the iPad. I love the portability of the iPad along with everything else it has to offer.
BTW, isn't it interesting that the market thinking of the Chinese raising interest rates yesterday was seen as a positive for the market today since the thinking was that this was done by the Chinese because of their BOOMING economy rather than an indication of significant slowing demand on commodities. Try and tell me this is not manipulation with a capital M! Obviously, yesterday's sell-off in the stock market and commodities was a great buying opportunity. In fact, not only did I buy more AAPL shares yesterday but I bought some corn futures on the overnight trading and made a great profit. Corn touched limit up at one point today after selling off quite a lot the previous 3-4 sessions (especially yesterday). All I can say is "thank you manipulators"!
I don't really care about a real keyboard to add weight etc. I actually find it easier to type on the virtual keyboard of the iPad. I love the portability of the iPad along with everything else it has to offer.
Of course the iPad is cool, it's made by Apple... But, go to the Apple website, and take a look at this new small MacBook Air... talk about portability! And, it can run all the usual desktop productivity applications that can't be run on an iPad, as well as run all the iPad apps, too. Faster, more powerful, just as portable, run more apps, real keyboard (most people type better and prefer tactile feedback, even though you don't.)
Apple knew the reasons they needed this, with iPad sales slower than expected. Progress from Apple is a good thing.
I bought some corn futures on the overnight trading and made a great profit.
What? You knew about a trade that would make a great profit, and you didn't share with us? After all the tips GS and I have shared with you? Hmmm.
Seriously, that's terrific, but did you need a broker? Exactly how did you make the transaction?
TM
BTW, I can't resist poking at you that I posted this (including cut & paste) entirely from my HTC EVO 4G.
Seriously, that's terrific, but did you need a broker? Exactly how did you make the transaction?
First of all, one needs to have an account open with some sort of commodity brokerage house. Once that is done, I suppose you could place the trades yourself electronically if that brokerage house has or allows that capability. I placed the trade by actually talking to a broker.
Before everyone here decides to open a commodity account, I need to warn you that it is not for the faint of heart. It is MUCH more risky than playing the stock market. You need to know what is affecting the particular commodity at any given time and watch it like a hawk. About 95% of the people trading commodities come out on the losing end. That statistic right there should scare you. A lot of commodities are greatly affected by the weather during certain times of the year and that's where I have an advantage. In recent years in particular, even if you get the weather right in the important area of the world for that commodity, you can still lose your shirt since it has become much more of a global situation. For example, if I decide to short soybeans in early August because of beneficial rains coming into the Midwest, I could lose in a big way, if there is an announcement that the Chinese just purchased a million tons of soybeans from the U.S. There can be times when one is trapped with limit up or limit down moves if you are on the wrong side and you cannot get out until it is off the limit the next day or who knows when. Theoretically, there is an unlimited amount one can make or lose trading commodities. One rule of thumb to follow is that you should always be willing to take a fairly "small loss" if the market is not behaving the way you expected when you entered the trade so that it does not turn into a huge loss.
I guess I will sell the iPad (at a big loss) and purchase the MacBook when it comes out.
We are still in October, and your call for the Dow to hit 11,200 has already happened.
My prediction of a range of 11,250-11,500 is getting closer and closer.
As I posted yesterday, I have been more bullish on equities recently than I've been in a very long time.
I now think a range of 11,750-12,000 is quite possible!
Don't wait to buy more stocks. Do it now. And then load up on the next correction.
Biggest risk? Obama's policies that suppress jobs creation, and poor jobs/employment data. Poor jobs data could chop the legs out from under the market.
I was noticing the gross average commissions for the different brokerage houses, and thought it worthwhile to point out that it mostly comes from we `inpatient donkey` drivers.....I would think a little fear might come into the market right after the election...Got to keep the brokers making plenty of money....and notice the poaching going on----get a bonus is you change firms of twenty or more percent of last years commissions....nice Tony
I've been saying that I am more bullish than I've been in a long time.
BTW, you must take a serious look at the performance of CMG... which I recommended here recently. Trust me, this stock is going to the moon, and I can't be any happier about it. I hope some of you bought shares.
Excellent article Len! I think there is a lot of truth there.
Just remember this: "When other buy I sell, sell, sell. When others sell, I buy, buy, buy"! Basically, since a lot of the media and know it alls were speaking bearishly the past couple months, we have been going, long, longer, and longest and making good money. Now one of these days there will be a decent correction, but I am convinced that the market will be trending upward well into next year and possibly longer. Remember what I stated last week. The average American consumer will spend.
>Basically, since a lot of the media and know it alls were speaking bearishly the past couple months, we have been going, long, longer, and longest and making good money. Now one of these days there will be a decent correction,
No I d'ont have it. Nor do I have QLIK at this point. But I sold an SIRI position that was great for me back when it got near $1.40 and have some money to buy another stock. Some of the money from Sirius went into Apple.
I'll look at it. Thanks for the heads-up. I've been hesitant to buy into the market at this price point, not because I think its near a high over 6-8 months but because I think it's near a high for this year.
BTW - I didn't want to promote Sirius because it was a real speculative buy on my part in a dangerous period of its life. But I once met Mel Karmizin and no business he runs is going down without a massive fight so I bought a substantial amount of it when it was very low. As well logic told me that as the auto biz recovered so would sat radio.
No I d'ont have it. Nor do I have QLIK at this point.
CMG has gone up 129.29% from a year ago! It went up 14.79% yesterday (Friday). The crazy thing is, I still believe it has some more upside.
BTW, I also think Ford is still a good buy (longer term). Next dip, consider it.
Your logic regarding SIRI was very intuitive! Excellent.
On a seperate note, I was wondering how your autumn colors have been this year. We don't get that beautiful foliage change here in Malibu. Just gets greener and more lush with the occassional winter rain.

Len, it is interesting that you mentioned SIRI. I own a few thousand shares of this stock at an everage price of about 90 cents. I am keeping it for a long time. Sirius/XM will continue to grow. I for one love it. We have XM and the Best of Sirius on both our cars. I listen to its programming all the time. It makes long trips a pleasure.
On a totally separate note, we (ISU Cyclone fans) are in ecstacy this afternoon. The football team probably hat its biggest victory in the history of Iowa State. We beat Texas at Texas. Wow! What a win!
On a seperate note, I was wondering how your autumn colors have been this year. We don't get that beautiful foliage change here in Malibu. Just gets greener and more lush with the occassional winter rain.
Starting to get beautiful in my area and nearing peak. My imediate street and yard are loaded with Beech and White oaks, sprinkled with Maples and Chestnuts and all of these turn late. So I still have a lot of green that are just starting to turn. Peak here is usually near or just after halloween. I'll post a picture when it peaks here. D'ont know how beautiful it'll get as this was a very hot summer with a long drought period.
I get (even more) depressed at this time of the year with the lack of seasonal change here in the desert. Often I can travel in the autumn to enjoy the colours, but not this year.
Those are great shots. That is why I am in southern Indiana the last two weeks. I think we are a couple weeks too early. Though we have gotten some good shots. How much North are you of Evansville Indiana?
I'm 40.45 North, Looked up Evansville and it's 37.97 North. But the immediate trees that dominate very locally by me are a week or so later thhan the rest of the area. Just about every year I peak just before to just after Halloween so we are right on schedule.
Re Dow - had dinner this weekend with my buddy from Nasdaq and the street expectation is that we move to around 11,700 by year end in a Christmas rally with an outside shot at 12,000. But that is based on a major win by Reps in the coming elections. Dems on the loose and the fear is thhat the market drops below 11,000, possibly all the way to 10,400-10,500. His feeling is the market makes a 200+ jump on the day after the elections if the reps win or it'll go 300+ points down on the Dems maintaining control.
These are pretty spectacular photos Len. Unlike some of the others here, I am well aware of how beautiful fall foliage can be. I use to live in southern New England many moons ago. People here in IA have no clue as to how incredibly gorgeous the fall foliage can be. Foliage is rather dull here. My wife and I are visiting my brother and sister in MA in November after a stop in the Detroit area to see our daughter, granddaughter, and son-in-law. Unfortunately, the fall foliage will be well past its peak by Nov. 11.
BTW, the reason I asked you about the foliage is that my family had visited New England numerous times during the fall when I was a kid... for the sole purpose of viewing the spectacular foliage. I've never forgotten just how beautiful it can be.
Of course, I always made sure I got to do some fishing when I was there.
More recently, although still some years back, I took a beautiful drive with family specifically to see the foliage, and we went completely around the Great Lakes, north into Canada and then across towards the Niagra Falls area. Canada was spectacular, but I still think New England takes the foliage prize.
And, as a contrast, I now write this just after watching the sun set over the Pacific Ocean with a beautiful sky full of blazing colors tonight.
And, as a contrast, I now write this just after watching the sun set over the Pacific Ocean with a beautiful sky full of blazing colors tonight
Where's the picture.
As long as our hosts are being generous with photos here's 2 sports photo you guys might like. I had the luxury of going to Yankee stadium on Steinbrenner night about a month ago and took this shot of the the Yankees marching along the right field fence with a standing crowd and a full moon above right field. Also caught a shot of WFAN's Mike Francesa who was sitting a few rows ahead of me with a bunch of folks from Fox, including Sheperd Smith and some of their local sport broadcasters We had great seats in the Delta skybox right behind home plate and right in front of the broadcasters covering the game. The new Yankee stadium is very very impressive. These were taken with my wife's point and shoot Nikon. I use a Canon T2i digital SLR and wish I had that on this night as it has a 270 zoom leens.
BTW - what's your thoughts on a Dow 11,700-12,000 momentum move off the elections that my buddy is thinking will happen? I told him I was at 11,200 with some drop to 10,800 by year end. His feeling is high 11's or mid 10's depending on the election outcome.
I guess you have your hands full with this monster storm in the midwest. What's its effects in your area? Here in the northeast and mid-atlantic it's bringing about summer with 80 temps today and my colors are even more amazing than yesterday. I read one extremely bullish call by the NWS of it possibly getting near 28.00'' of mercury. Worst storm we ever had over this area was the 93 superstorm with 961mb pressure reported in this area thru about Allentown Pa.. In that storm I had 17 of snow and sleet followd by 40 degre rain for few hours and then when the storm went just north of me he temperture dropped 17 degres in 3 minutes (from42 to 25), everyting flash froze and it resumed snowing. By morning it was 12 degrees with 40-50 mph winds and the snow pile at the curb was as hard as a rock and it was 3-4' high. Tha was a mid March storm.
We are witnessing an HISTORIC storm today into tomorrow in the upper Midwest. A new low pressure record has been established in Chicago for October this morning. It was down to 29.02 inches of mercury even though the center of low pressure was about 450 miles to the northwest in northern MN. In MN an all time record low pressure has been already established today. As of this writing it was down to 961 millibars in northern MN and it will get down to at least 958 millibars this afternoon and evening. The previous record was 962.8 millibars at Rochester, MN on Nov. 10, 1998. This is mind boggling. 958 millibars is about 28.33 inches of mercury. ND will be having a blizzard tonight and tomorrow with northwest winds gusting to near hurricane force at times along with 4-6"+ snows.
Here in IA we had rain overnight and this morning, but now we have to contend with wicked winds through tomorrow. The strongest winds will be tomorrow even though the low pressure will be further away. The pressure gradient will still be very tight and with sunshine tomorrow, winds will be gusting to over 60 mph from the west and northwest. With a given pressure gradient, winds are considerably stronger with sunshine as opposed to cloudy skies as we have today. Sunshine makes things more turbulent.
Not too much posting on my part lately, but still interested in reading, and in seeing the nice colors ljlfx has posted. Those interested in more Autumn colors may pay a visit to this pic album (which has been prompted by cdpinhead ): http://www.carspace.com/jlbl/?50@@.5cd6916c
Those are pics I took last year late in October in Chicago. Trees, skyline, Gehry reflections and some car, all of them plenty of color or shadow. I enjoyed taking them, I will be very pleased if some enjoy watching them now.
More great autumn colors. We have seen a lot of great oranges and yellows on this trip to Indiana. Not the reds you have shown. It is the main reason we love to travel in October. That and most all the tourists are gone for the year.
We got a good bit of wind and rain down here this morning from the storm cyclone was talking about.
Speaking of investing. What about that Ford (F)??? Every time I think about selling they go up some more. My Ford stock is up 715% since I bought it at $1.76. I am glad it is in my IRA account as I won't have to think about paying capital gains until I am forced to start taking it out.
October is great to travel, IMO. We went to Sicily late last September. Wonderful days. Cannot say anything of Ford, it's out of my scope.
Regards, Jose
Edited: Ford is out of my scope but Apple is not. I bought some time ago some stocks because of following this thread. And I'm a happy user since the first Macintoshes in the Eighties. Now I use a MacBook since three years. I will skip the Pro to go to Air-borne. What a machine it seems!
Many thanks, Dan. I dance, and I'm actually thinking on skiing this winter. Though by now I'm afraid of falling down on the slope; I'm still not so confident in my strength/balance. But it will come, I hope, step by step.
Thank you for the beautiful photos Jose. If you ever have a chance, take a vacation through New England in October. You will probably see THE most gorgeous foliage in the world.
BTW, I have not signed up for Car Space since I really do not have any more time to spend in that forum. My days are pretty full with my job, playing the markets, (stocks and commodities), playing tennis, posting in this forum that I truly enjoy, and occasionally posting in the Lexus forum. Besides, I am not a true car enthusiast. I imagine that people in Car Space are real car enthusiasts.

I don't get off that easy. Looking at the Bank balance sheets, the "junk is still in the trunk" so financials will drag any market advance, imvho.
I say sideways, upside down, backwards and wind up at 11K/1.2K for 2010.

Thanks Len.

Thank you, thank you, thank you.
Now, THAT's what I'm talkin' about.
Autumn is my favourite season, even here. It's much better where there truly are four seasons, and a nice bit of Indian summer makes it finer yet.

Those interested in more Autumn colors may pay a visit to this pic album (which has been prompted by cdpinhead

Those are pics I took last year late in October in Chicago. Trees, skyline, Gehry reflections and some car, all of them plenty of color or shadow. I enjoyed taking them, I will be very pleased if some enjoy watching them now.
So, there is here some glimpses
There is more in the album

We got a good bit of wind and rain down here this morning from the storm cyclone was talking about.
Speaking of investing. What about that Ford (F)??? Every time I think about selling they go up some more. My Ford stock is up 715% since I bought it at $1.76. I am glad it is in my IRA account as I won't have to think about paying capital gains until I am forced to start taking it out.

Jose
Edited: Ford is out of my scope but Apple is not. I bought some time ago some stocks because of following this thread. And I'm a happy user since the first Macintoshes in the Eighties. Now I use a MacBook since three years. I will skip the Pro to go to Air-borne. What a machine it seems!

I shall do it, I really must. I've visited from Conneticut to Maine, and Vermont, but in summertime.
job playing tennis
Regarding the job, I enjoy mine even if I'm reaching an age in which usually a person becomes tired/cynical/frustrated/barking.
Regarding tennis, I miss it a lot. I'm going to a gym to recover my strength, but it is nothing compared to playing tennis (or to skiing
