Well first I would have tried to stop payment on any portion of car purchase I could. If you did, then you car salesman is highly motivated to be your advocate in getting problem resolved as quickly as possible. That's why I paid by check on a Saturday. I don't know about legality of this but I'd imagine that it would be a lot easier for dealer to fix your car promptly then to sue you.

If you were able to stop a portion, then you're also in a better position to ask for a free 100K bumper-to-bumper warranty too.

I am sure like in any industry there are good and poor people you meet with any purchase. Bottom line, find a dealer that wants to assist you in getting what you want, explains all of your options and allows you to make a well informed decision on your own. BTW,thirdsuv, I disagree about you having to go to a hungrier dealer because if the first dealer missed your trust and business over an option or two they will be pretty hungry real soon. Just my opinion

Anyone install a rear passenger video system in a Seq with a sunroof? If so, did you have to go with in seat monitors? or did you figure out a way to do a ceiling mounted drop down that will not interfere with the roof mechanism? I'm looking for guidance. Thanks

I picked up my Sequoia ordered the way I wanted it and it does not have one option that I did not want. The vehicle has the PM leather package, dual air, alloy wheel package, roof rack, and five piece carpeted floor mats. The vehicle does not have the dreaded cash cow Toyoguard or the Convenience Package with the power heated outside mirrors.I decided against the convenience package as it didnot come with the SNOW PLOW a must living in S Fla.I went to four dealerships being told I could not order the vehicle I now have. The vehicle took about 7 weeks to arrive.I bought my vehicle from Sandra Molina of Toyota of Hollywood.I can not say enough nice things about Sandra and it was a pleasure buying the vehicle from her.I know of at least three people who are going to buy a new Toyota this year and you can guess who they will be talking to.Sandra is an asset to her dealership and other dealerships could learn from her on how to sell cars and how to treat customers.

Has anyone had problems turning this off? I though I just needed to push the button on my LTD and it would go off. No such luck. Any ideas? Not that I really want it off...I just like pushing buttons and when I did nothing happened so now I'm worried.

The Sequoia in my opinion is light years ahead of FORD AND GM on interior quality, ride, and comfort.I have never owned a Toyoyta untill about 2 days ago and I am amazed with this vehicle.I do not have the dreaded engine slap or ticking noise that has been posted on this board.I know that if this vehicle lives up to the reputation of Toyota I will never buy another Ford or GM product only time will tell.
  • suznjonessuznjones Member Posts: 32
I read the posting (thanks) but it looks like I should still be able to turn off the VSC in 2WD. "VSC will selectively apply brakes and throttle to prevent under steer or oversteer. It works in both 2 and 4 wheel drive." When I test drove the car, the guy said that pushing the button would turn on the dash light to let you know it was off. I don't remember him actually showing us this but I know I heard it. Should the light come on in 2WD?

I recently bought an SR5 Sequoia and I am extremely happy. I recently bought a MANIK brush guard and push bar for $375.00 from a local aftermarket 4x4 custom shop. I also purchased a pair of Hella Driving lights for the Brush guard.

I have looked everywhere for yellow (amber) fog lights for the oval opening in the front bumper of the Sequoia. Unfortunately, I could not find a manufacturer that provides a fog light that fits in that opening. The Toyota dealer is asking $400.00 plus for the fog lights. I do not think it is worth that much.

Has anyone found an aftermarket fog light that fits in the front bumper opening. Can you please provide me with the manufacturer, part number or model and price. Thanks you for your support.

sorry -- been out very sick with the darn FLU and terrible cold. Tis the season lately for me. I have had the flu more times in this one calendar year than the previous 5 years. Stress. I think.

I hope SW's/Cliffy's answered any questions directed at dealers in my absence!

Debbiev, while one dealer might take you out of that car and drop you right into another if it were available, not every dealer will do that. You are entitled to a free loaner though.

I should probably go back and revise that a bit. While it is true that the VSC works in both 2 and 4 wheel drive, you can only turn it off if you are in 4 wheel drive. There is a "VSC Off" light that will come on when you disengage it. About the only reason to turn that off is if you are doing some serious off roading where you need to be able to drift sideways.

I had PIAA 959's installed with the amber (Ion Crystal) lens. They look GREAT. Really fit well into the opening and I love the amber glow that they give off.

So how about posting some foglights pics over in the tundrasolutions board?

    Maybe some nice closeups too.

I have a Bauer bike rack that fits in the trailer hitch. It will hold up to 4 bikes and has been a solid performer for two years. The best feature(this is why I bought it) is that you can swing the entire set of bikes out to the side of your vehicle. The bikes are completely out of the way and you can lock them in this position(they are actually parallel to your vehicle in this position). So, when you are traveling it is really convenient to open your tailgate, whether it is a lift or fold down. This rack is all steel and provides excellent theft deterrent. I live in So. Cal and you can find these at a retailer called sportsrack. Hope this helps

Some dealers just don't like to make special order cars for customers. The dealers objective is to sell the cars that are already on the lot. The longer the cars sit on the lot the more money the dealer loses.

The other thing is if you special order the car and then decide you don't like something, you don't have to take delivery of the car. Now the dealer has another car on the lot that needs to be sold. Now a new customer comes, he or she likes the car you ordered but he or she doesn't like the color and the cycle begins again. Now the dealer has to decide do I order another one or do I wait until I get rid of a few more these things.

Well, I really haven't gotten any closer to getting my SEQ back.
We went to the dealer because in my phone calls yesterday, the dealer claimed they had attempted to call me 3 times, left messages, & I didn't return their calls. Unfortunately, this was a lie. We have a machine & caller ID .... they never called. They also have my cell # which has voice mail & caller ID. (It is stated in my case file that they called). Of course I wanted to know who supposedly made these phone calls. We went to the dealer, the service manager said, "no, that was a miscommunication". So, it comes down to; the only communication we get from Toyota is miscommunication.
We ended up (finally, after waiting @ the dealer for a couple hours) speaking with a factory rep who basically said he has no answers for us, but would DEFINITELY have an answer by Monday.
BTW, the customer relations mgr STILL has not called me back. I AM NOT IMPRESSED WITH TOYOTA IN ANY WAY SHAPE OR FORM AT THIS TIME!!!

I understand that if a part is on back-order & it's coming from another country, there's only so much a person in the US can do. We manufacture equipment from Germany & often can't do anything but wait. (frequently my husb goes there to "baby-sit") It is still very frustrating being on the receiving end. The least they could do is keep us updated .... which they don't, unless we force the issue.

THIRDSUV, I would love to stop pymt, but we paid cash & by the time we realized this was a bigger problem than originally thought it was too late. We still might try for the bumper to bumper though.

DFORR, pecking order doesn't seem to make a difference a Toyota.... they do what they want when they want. Obviously we have to give it more time, but unfortunately our next step would be arbitration. BTW, I did get a loaner (posted on another board). I'm grateful to have a car to drive, but a 45K SUV vs. a 20K Camry with no cargo space doesn't cut it when you need to haul 50-100, 6ft lamps.

Hopefully soon I will have a happier story to write....in the meantime I can only long to have my SEQ in good running condition.

I have a Sequoia SR5 - when I turn a corner and step on the accelerator the acceleration seems to fade and then it picks up speed. This only seems to happen if its a quick turn as opposed to a slow turn. Anyone experience this?
  • cliffy1cliffy1 Member Posts: 3,581
Does this seem to happen when there is gravel or sand in the road? I strongly suspect you are engaging the rev limiter portion of the traction control system. When wheel slip is detected, the RPMs are limited which results in a loss of power until there is no slip detected. You can prevent this by putting it in 4WD. The traction control system still operates but without the rev limiter. This vehicle is safe to leave in 4WD.
  • ka5ljbka5ljb Member Posts: 7
You may be right. However I don't recall any sand or gravel; I can't put it in 4WD since my vehicle is a 2WD. I had a hunch that the issue was generated by a sensor of some kind but I am not all that familiar with the traction system or the skid system. Has anyone else asked about this?

We have a Seq with sunroof and did a lot of research on installing a RVS. Here is what we found: We had to pry the number of the dealer's after market contact, once we did they indicated that they CAN install video system in ceiling (or back of head rests)- price $2,500. The other option was to go thru Best Buy or Circuit City. Neither one of those places would install with a sunroof. I had a hard time justifying $2,500 so we decided to try a portable DVD player with 7" screen from Panasonic for $1,000. We have had it now for a couple months and love it. It fits nicely on top of the center console - we purchased a headphone splitter so the two kids can listen to the movie while we listen to the radio. And, I can take the DVD player with me on those long airplane trips.
  • cliffy1cliffy1 Member Posts: 3,581
Again, without driving it and feeling it for myself, I am making an educated guess as to the hesitation. What you described is actually pretty common and drivers need to understand what is happening. When any wheel slip is detected, the RPMs will be limited and brakes will be applied to the slipping wheel. When traction is regained, full fuel is allowed to flow and the brakes let off.

On the 4WD, you can prevent this by leaving the thing in 4WD. In this mode, the brakes still kick in but the rev limiter does not. On the 2WD, you can disengage the TRACS by hitting the button on the dash. I wouldn't keep that off, but if you know you will be driving on roads that are a bit slick and need to accelerate through corners, I would hit the button.

I have only bought two vehicles in my life that were not special orders. The cost of the Sequoia requires you to be happy with what is on the vehicle unless you have cash to burn.I do not think any dealer is going to have a hard time selling a special order if the buyer backs out on a Sequoia order. The buyer also must put down a deposit which in most cases is forfeit if you back out of a signed deal. The selection of Sequoias I saw on several lots was extremely scarce and I would not own one now had I not been able to SPECIAL ORDER the vehicle. There is no dealership that is going to tell me what options I must have and the ones I can not have.Lets all remember we are the customers paying a hefty price for this vehicle

Well, I think Cliffy's on the right track but I don't think it's necessarily the wheel slippage that's causing the VSC computer's reation. In addition to wheel speed sensors, the VSC is also monitoring steering wheel angle, yaw-rate, and de-acceleration. So, even on dry, gravel-free pavement a sharp turn at sufficient speed, yaw, and steering wheel angle can probably "fool" the VSC into thinking that it needs to step in with a little de-tuning effect.

sgriff4033: FYI---We had a rear video/DVD system installed in our Limited with sunroof. Seems to work well without interfering with the sunroof. I think it was about $2200 with infrared head phones. Kept 4 teenagers quiet and entertained during a 1200 mile trip last week! Paradyme here in Sacramento CA installed it.

I have ordered a red Sequoia SR5 with the standard stock radio with the single CD. Is this the one they are complaining about or the upgrade radios. Mine has been matched and should be here by next week I'm guessing. By the way I checked out the red after I ordered at another dealer. Looks okay. I also saw a silver SR5 without the overfenders which I hate by the way. It looked nice more like the Tundra. I really would have perfered to order without overfenders but dealer said that truck was a fluke and GST would not order that way? Is this true? It seems if you order just styled aluminum wheels only without the AH or ST package you should get the aluminum wheels and you should get the truck I saw in the show room? What do you think? Let me pick your brain?????

Took my rig over the Continental Divide this weekend. A foot of snow, no guard rails and a blizzard. The passenger side sleet is headed for the Pacific, while my driver side sleet is on it's way to the Atlantic. No problems to report, the 4WD was perfect. Passed 3 wrecked SUV's and a volvo on the two hour drive home today, no Toyotas in the bunch.
This beast is the best auto I've ever driven in 31 years of moutain driving.

Sorry it took so long for me to respond to you.
Motor Trend January 2001 had an extensive shootout between Tahoe, Expedition and Sequoia. Quality etc. was constantly referred to throughout the comparison, which Sequoia won hands down in the scoring.
Motor Trend's Truck Trend February 2001 also did a comparison. Here are some quotes: "Toyota did its homework...excellent build quality", "The Toyota absolutely blew the competition away in the fit-and-finish department".
You could probably get these articles at their websites. Hope this helps.
  • 714cut714cut Member Posts: 355
I happen to have a high standard of expectations for my vehicle. That's why I chose the Sequoia after trying the others!
I will agree that the Sequoia is far from perfect. The perfect vehicle has not been built yet. And I agree that ill-fitting carpets, and other comments on this forum are frustrating for such an expensive vehicle. One thing that drives me crazy is the passengers side seatbelt latch banging against the plastic beside the seat when no passenger!
My frustration is with posters that only say negative things about the vehicle without any acknowledgement of its positive attributes-and often they don't own or have not even driven a Sequoia.
I will stand by my comments- that the Sequoia has the best fit-and-finish in its class. Not perfect, but miles ahead of the competition.
I "defend" the Sequoia because I appreciate the vehicle and am a satisfied customer. I would do the same for any vehicle that satisfied my high standards.

p.s. dforr- I have never worked for nor had any association with the Toyota Motor Company. Nice try though. I'm glad you enjoy your VW! I wish I could find an older vehicle that I could get passionate about!

    Have a good night everyone

Thanks for the recommendation. I have been asking everyone who knows anything about Toyotas the same question about "fit and finish," as you call it. Glad to have a concrete place to look for the information. Just today I noticed yet another interior piece falling apart in my '97 Chrysler Town and Country X. Now, to get my husband down to test drive a SEA!

I own a Seq. Limited and had it for about 3 weeks and now its making some kind of ticking noise from the engine and don't quite know what it is. Is it just me or does anyone else hear it too. Please tell me what this "ticking" sound is if somebody knows.
  • mmcgregormmcgregor Member Posts: 33
You may have the same problem as me. Mine started when it was about 2 weeks old (at least that's when I first noticed it). One known problem is the fuel injectors. Many people have had success with the insulation fix detailed in previous posts but that's not the problem I have. My tick shows up when it's below ~60deg. It sounds like it's coming out of the vents on either side of the radio.

One thought is that the computer does some timing adjustments or something based on outside temperature and for some reason the change is causing a "ping" in the valves/lifters. I think there is also circuitry to prevent/correct misfiring conditions but the two don't seem to be playing well together.

    What are your symptoms?

I have also experienced the hesitation in 2WD, exactly as described by ka5ljb. And the road was dry and free of sand.

The service manuals explains that in 2WD, VCS will cut power if it senses that a skid is about to happen (but I suspect it doesn't apply any brakes unless one of the wheels is actually slipping).

The promotional literature refers to a yaw sensor, but the service manuals shows that the actual ECU input is a steering wheel position sensor. The ECU also knows the the accelerator position, speed, and whether any wheels are skiding. So if the steering wheel is turned "too much" and the accelerator is pushed "too much" for the speed you're going, the ECU cuts the fuel being injected.

Crude, annoying, but effective. VCS in 4WD is more sophisticated, for example, braking the outside wheels on an oversteer skid.

Cliffy suggest turning off the TRACS by hitting a button on the dash. I can't turn off VCS in my 4WD model (in 2WD), but maybe in a 2WD model you can turn it off (??). My VCS also doesn't sound an alarm when it activates (the dash indicator lights up). I think that may be an improvement over early models.

My beloved '95 Tacoma 4x4 SR5 V6 was hit last week. The insurance will be appraising it today, but I'm already thinking about taking the check and trading in the truck. I test drove a Sequoia about 6 months ago and loved it.

One thing I will miss if I trade in the Tacoma, is the ability to haul 4X8 sheets of plywood home from Home Depot.

Can anyone with a Sequoia tell me if there is 4 feet of width in the back of the vehicle? I don't care if the ply hangs out the back, its only a few blocks from the big orange store to my house.

    Thanks

After owning my SR5 for three months is seems to be developing a hesitation when I step on the gas. This happens at any speed. I use Mobil gas and it occurs when I use 93 octane or 87 octane. Any ideas? Thanks.
  • movanmovan Member Posts: 32
Yes, the SEQ is wide enough by a few inches on each side for a 4x8 sheet. And you can close the tailgate if you suspend a couple of sheets above your headrest. The angle from the tailgate floor to the the top of the headrest should keep your head out of harm's way in a panic stop.
  • movanmovan Member Posts: 32
I packed some bags in the back of the Sequoia on Friday, to head up to the lake. The rear hatch wouldn't close all the way. I tried it once more with feeling and put a huge (1.5' x 1') dent in the left side of the hatch! I never had to be cognizant of where I chose to close the hatch on my Ford Explorer, and I've slammed it much harder. On the Tundra board, I saw that someone else is remarking about the thin-ness of the sheetmetal. Be careful!

"Anyone have a bike rack for their Sequoia?"

I have a Yakima, which fits in the receiver hitch. It can be configured to carry 2, 3, or 4 bikes, has locks for the bikes and for the rack itself (locks into the hitch). It will fold down, though not with the bikes on it, for access to the hatch. It is very stable and not all that expensive. FYI, Toyota uses the Yakima models as their recommended rack. However, I bought mine from a good bike shop--most full service bike shops sell Yakima.

Sometimes reading this board makes me think everyone who has a Sequoia is rather wealthy except for me!

It appears that most people order theirs with almost every option, especially the beloved side air bags. If they can't get the air bags they've whined in anguish all over these pages. They've then postulated how Toyota should've included side air bags because its only a few hundred bucks, and we all know safety has no price (just listen to a Police Chief during budget time at City Hall).

Hate to break it to you folks, but there are some of us who are just barely squeezing into a base level 4x4 SR5 (mats, PG and hitch) who are glad they don't have to take the beloved side airbags et al and thus not be able to get the vehicle.

Somehow I've survived all these years without curtain air bags, even without front air bags, and I'm still going strong. Sure they add a small increment of safety, but not enough to make a difference to ME. If you want them, Great!, just don't mandate that I have to have them because you know what's good for me.

I find the Sequoia to be a great vehicle that I will feel very safe in. I hope you feel safe in yours with the leather seats and side air bags. Let's just remember that reasonable people should make their own choices with regard to how much risk and cost they want to take on.

It was hot as hell yesterday so I got a chance to use the AC. Turned it on and got the flashing AC light. Bummer! When I got home I looked things over and found many bubbles in the sight glass. I unscrewed the valve cap on the high pressure side and saw bubbles there as well. I think I can figure out where the leak is on this one. Has anyone else had any kind of AC problems?
