Oxx93 - I got mine fully loaded with everything except adjustable pedals for $34k, with 0% 3 year financing and the 7 year powertrain. So far so good. Only one minor problem with the dual zone temperature controls, the passenger side blows cold air for the first 15 minutes unless the setting is on High. Otherwise, drives great, great power from the HO V8, no problems. We test drove the 02 Eddie Bauer Explorer and that was ok, still like the jeep better; also tried the mitsubishi montero ltd - total junk.

...would you drive around town in Full Time 4WD or in 2WD? Is there any economy advantage to driving on the street in 2WD? Is there an operational or mechanical advantage to one or the other? Is it advisable to occasionally switch between 2wd/Part Time 4wd/Full time 4wd to keep the transfer case linkage operating properly? If so, how often? (I understand the limits of Part Time 4WD operation.)

(Also posted on 4WD & AWD Systems Explained forum....thought those of you most familiar with Jeep GC's could offer sage advice, too.)

    Thanks

We just picked up our 2002 JGCL. We turned in out 99 lease. Our 2002 has the 28k pkg., 4.7 v8, chrome wheels, tp monitor and rain sensing wipers. The v8 is a big improvement over the i6 we had in our 99 and i would recommend it to anyone. We paid invoice for the vehicle after shopping at 4 different dealers. We had looked at the Envoy, but the Jeep was more appealing to us. It also looks a lot more polished, especially in black with the chrome wheels. Thanks to everyone for their input. I will try to update any problems(hopefully not) that we encounter.

just fyi, i bought my ltd just over a yr ago and haven't had any major problems at all. it's got the 28k pkg, v8, 2wd, class IV tow pkg, 10-disc cd, silverstone/taupe. i needed the rotors turned at 12k mi and the radio was replaced under warrantee, but other than that i love the power, comfort, dual zone a/c, great heated seats, and user-friendly controls. the only options i've added so far are driver/passenger tint, wheel locks, locking gas cap, receiver hitch lock, and splash guards. now with 22k miles, i thankfully haven't experienced any brake pulsing or any other problems. future plans include a bolt-on supercharger, headers, and stainless exhaust for some HD hauling, umm i mean towing.

    loving my jeep, leo

p.s. i also get the trans 'clunk'.

Could it be u joint wear?

    Easy enough to check that.

Grab the drive shaft and try to turn it back and forth. If it goes, that is likely it.

Well my lease is just about finished on the 99 had a few minor problems. Also had a 1996 and never had the rotor problem, on either truck. I am trying to find something a little cheaper, test drove a Honda CR-V. Sorry no comparison, I guess I will have to have another GC. These cars at the Honda dealer are all presold until March. I am still trying to figure out why, besides Honda quality. I think DC made a mistake with the Liberty, they should have made it look like a mini GC,with better gas mileage, and loaded up sold for about 23000 then they would have a real winner. Mike

I was at the dealer today in Orlando, Carmax, and all of their 2002 models had a sign in the window that said (This vehicle is not for sale until further notice). Can anyone tell me what this is about? The NHTSA site did not reflect anything concerning a recent recall with the 2002's. This concerns me seeing how we just took delivery of ours 2 weeks ago.
  • anonymous02anonymous02 Member Posts: 1,538
The Grand Cherokee is a winner. A smaller version of the same (like Escape is to Explorer) would be good.

Somehow the title "Lesser Cherokee" doesn't ring a bell.

Ideally for me, it would be a 4 or V6, with same styling as GC, and 2 solid axles, just a scaled down version. Also offer a "stripped" version with light weight, less doodads, etc. for the skiers, hunters, contractors, fuel conscious, and price conscious among us.

Im the proud new owner of a '02 2WD JGC Laredo. It has a V8, Side Impact Airbags, and a Convenience Package (can't remember the name) as options. I paid $200 over the dealer invoice plus I received $2000 in rebates ($1000 for V8 and $1000 for Laredo I think) with 5.75% financing over 60mnths. Did I get a good deal? Additionally my JGC had a 7yr 100,000 mile powertrain warranty included for free. The dealer offered to extend my Bumper to Bumper warranty from 3 yr 36k to 6yr 100k for $1006 through DC. I opted out at the contract signing, but have began to have second thoughts. $1k for a full B to B warranty is cheap and after reading through these forums I see that the JGC has had some issues (rotors, steering column etc.) with reliability. I have always maintained my cars well so I have never felt the need for extended warranties since I never really had any expensive problems. What are your thoughts on purchasing the extended warranty. It only has 100 miles on it now, but I love it. Thanks!

Read all about it at the DC media center at www.daimlerchrysler.com Then enter 'media services' as guest. Scan down to 'Latest Material By Category' under the Chrysler Group heading. The voluntary recall relates to the ON-Board Refueling Vapor Recovery (ORVR)system- new for this model year. DC customer call center phone is 1-800-853-1403 for recall questions.

Note that the extended warranty might not cover the rotor problem:

    NOT COVERED:

Maintenance services and items used in such services

    Glass, plastic lenses

Body and paint items, including soft trim

Snow plows, winches and trailer hitches

Wear items such as manual clutch assembly, brake pads, shoes, rotors, drums and belts

This is from their extended warranty page:

Patch the above together if needed to make it work.

We are about to return our 99 Grand Cherokee Laredo v8 (quadra trac)at the end of our 3 year lease. It is our second Laredo v8, and we think it is a good way to go, because you can get v8 power, quadra trac, leather, moonroof, etc. for less than the Limited, without some Limited options, and has a nice rugged look. We have really enjoyed this vehicle, with no MAJOR problems. (Some low idle/stalling problems eventually solved with a new chip) It is a lot of fun to drive, very powerful, quick, and useful. Best thing about it is the v8. We have 27,000 miles and the original all terrain tires are still in good shape. Truck still looks great (identical to the 2002).

We thought about extending the lease for 12 months, as it only has the 27,000 miles on it, at $40.00 less per month, but it will be out of warranty, so that didn't seem like a good idea. (Power door lock just broke, two days before turn in.)An extended warranty for the additional 12 months would have cost $45.00 a month, so it wipes out the benefite of the lower lease rate.

Thought about leasing a 2002 but the lease deals initially offered would have been more per month, notwithstanding $4,000 in incentives. Also wanted side curtain air bags, but our dealer told us there weren't any around with the Laredo v8. (Don't think he really wanted to look very hard.) Also, it looks identical to the 1999. I think we could have probably gotten a better deal eventually, but it was harder than it should have been. The high rates initially quoted got me thinking about other vehicles, and we wound up getting something else that was more expensive, but a better deal.

Anyway, I am sorry about the problems some people have had with their Grand Cherokees, but ours was actually a very good one and we were quite happy with it for three years. It was wonderful for trips and touring, and fun to drive around town. We will miss it, I'm sure.

Anybody know who makes the Mopar CD changer for Jeep? The dealer wants $45.00 for a spare 10-disc CD changer magazine. The Jeep part number is 1-04858564. I'm sure there are more cost effective alternatives.

My Check Engine lamp seems to come on if I let the gas tank get too low. Instead of paying the dealer to tell me there is no problem and charging me $35, is there a way I can reset the lamp?

I have heard of some minor vibrtion problems on the regular cherokee because of the 1" higher ride height, but have never seen/heard anything about the grand. Thinking about getting a Grand but I want the skid group and A/T's which cost about the same as the up-country package which includes both plus alot more. I also prefer the Laredo, but the Ltd is only $1100 more with the options I want. Ltd probably has better resale even if equipped similar. Not sure if I can get a Ltd with the Selec-trac as all on the lots have had quadra which I don't want. Anyone have a grand ltd with the selec-trac or up-country?

I bought a new Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo a couple of months ago. My engine makes a clicking noise by the driver side when it is idling. The dealer says it is normal due to the Purge Solenoid. However, it didn't make the clicking noise when I purchased the vehicle. The clicking noise is annoying. I just want to know if this is normal. The dealership says it is normal. However, I didn't hear anything until at least
three weeks after I purchased the vehicle. Also lately when I first start up the vehicle it the clicking sound if very fast. After it warms up, it slows down. Anybody else have this same noise?
  • jerryosterjerryoster Member Posts: 1
For the last couple of days, my JCG makes a vibrating noise when it pulls hard going up a hill at around 40-50 mph. It almost sounds as if I am driving on a noisy unpaved road for a moment. There is no loss of power, and the engine seems fine . The noise does not seem to localize, and the interior of the car vibrates. It does not feel like a miss, and the engine checked out OK. It is not a thumping like noise like a wheel balance problem. All the fluids are full and look/smell normal. It seems to shift all ranges OK. Brakes, steering, and 4 WD seem ok. My mechanic hasn't figured it out yet, but did check out the engine OK; no misses etc. There is no noise in the drive train or bearings that I can hear. The transmission does not seem to slip. If I let up on the accelerator, the noise stops as I slow down. Anyone have an idea or a similar problem? Thanks!

I'm preparing to retire my '96 JGC Limited for a new 2002 Limited, and I have a question or two that I hope to get answered on this board.
    1. 4WD System: I don't plan to off road (I have a Wrangler for that), and the vehicle will see limited snow. My '96 w/ Quadra-Trac has never failed to get me through the slick stuff when called upon to do so. For this reason, I'm planning to order my new Jeep w/ Quadra-Trac II rather than Quadra-Drive. Does anyone know the differences in my older Quadra-Trac and the current version, and isn't it reputed to be quieter than the Quadra-Drive?
    2. V-8 engines: As I understand it, the new HO V-8 only provides extra muscle when run on premium gas. 30 extra horses would surely be nice, but I don't plan to tow anything other than maybe a small U-Haul one day, and I'm hesitant to commit to the extra $$$ for the HO engine if the 235 HP "junior" version provides sufficient oomph w/ regular fuel. It's also my understanding that the HO engine is only available with the K pkg, which includes Quadra-Drive (ref my question #1). Anyone got any experience/advice for me here?
    3. Anyone in the eastern Va area interested in a cherry one-owner '96 JGC Limited 4x4 V-8?
Many thanks for any help I can get.

I think it goes like this:

Selec-trac: You can pick part-time 4X4 which sends equal power front to rear, full-time which sends power to the front as it detects slippage in the rear, or 4X2.

Quadra-trac II: Always in full-time mode (as described above). Bascially you can't lock it in part-time 4X4 or 4X2 like you can with Selec-trac.

Quadra-drive: Full-time system that sends wheel to whichever wheel is getting traction. This is different from the full-time above because it sends it to the individual wheel, as opposed to front/rear. No selection on this one either, always locked in full-time 4X4.

The system you have now is probably the same as Quadra-trac II.

My in-laws have a ltd with Quadra-drive and it is a bit noisey, and has some steering "jump" when the wheels are fully locked, but I believe all the full-time systems do this. It will also climb their very steep driveway in deep snow without missing a beat. The RX300 they test drove couldn't make it up. I'm considering a grand, but want the selec-trac because I want the flexiblity. Both full-time systems are fine for most drivers looking to get through snow, mud, etc. The Quadra-drive is superior for traction, but if quadra-trac has worked for you then go with that. Alot less to break IMHO.

The new V8 is more refined, powerful(acceleration) and sucks less fuel than the 318 V8 you have. It will tow light trailers fine, and I wouldn't spring for the HO. I'm a stickler for power, but the 4.7L is more than adequate. If you're going to be towing 5000# around alot, then maybe it would be worth it.

It is nice that Selec-trac is being offered on 2002 V8 Grands now. There were 8 of them on the local Jeep lot.

Lease ends in a couple of months on my 1999 JGC Laredo V8, F package and have experienced the following:
    Warped Front Rotors:
1st pair replaced at 6k under warranty
2nd pair replaced at 18k under warranty
2nd pair resurfaced at 24k under warranty
3rd pair replaced at 27k under warranty

    Front Brake Pads:
Replaced at 18k, paid $320 (was told by dealer originals had only a 2k to 3k left on them)
    Replaced at 27k under warranty

    Rear Rotors and Pads:
Rotors resurfaced and pads replaced at my expense, paid $340.

    Drive Shaft:
Replaced under warranty along with yoke assembly.

    Transmission:
    Reprogramed twice under service notice.

I would like to purchase a 2002 JGC Limited this time around, but I am very hesitant because of the reoccuring warped front rotors I have experienced on my '99. In addition, with only 27k miles on the odometer, I am annoyed that I have had to spend almost $700 on brake repairs.

I am interested to know if JGC V8s, '01 and '02 model years, are free of these problems? And if not what people think is a good replacement for the same amount of $$$, I am not interested in spending more than $35k on a SUV. It is a tough decission because overall I have been very happy with my '99 JGC despite all these problems.

Mine were replaced under warranty @ 11K. The car has been a bit buggy but today it is worth its weight in gold (Chicago got 10" of snow today)and I drove throught it without a hitch. I would probably still buy another one due to its looks, ride and comfort.

I went to 4 Jeep dealers to lease a new JGC Limited and each told me that Chrysler financial would not lease a JGC and I needed to go thru their recommended finance company.

    How can this be??

Does anyone have the name and phone number of someone at Chrysler Finance I can speak with?

Looking forward to my new JGC.

I was at my Jeep dealer today to lease a JGC Limited V8 and was told the money factor was .0038 - that's 8.9%. Are they nuts? I couldn't find any mention of a lease plan that Chrysler is running right now. Anyone know of one?

    Thanks,

THAT WAS THE BEST THAT I COULD DO THRU CHRYSLER--I LEASED A 2002 JGCL WITH THE 235HP V8, CHROME WHEELS, TOW PKG, TIRE PRESS., AND RAIN SENSING WIPERS---ALL DEALERS WERE ASKING FOR $575-610/MONTH FOR 48 MONTHS---FINALLY GOT A DEAL AT $545/MONTH---THE RESIDUALS ARE VERY LOW--I HAD LEASED A 99 AND CHRYSLER TOOK ABOUT A $5000 LOSS ON MINE WHEN I TURNED IT IN.

Can you give a break-down of the lease cash?

I thought the current incentive was $2500.

I CAN ACCOUNT FOR $3500 OF THE LEASE CASH-

    $2500 CONSUMER CASH
    $1000 LEASE LOYALTY

I DO NOT KNOW WHERE THE OTHER $750 CAME FROM, MAYBE IT WAS AN ACCOUNTING ERROR ON THERE END? I FAILED TO ASK ABOUT IT WHEN I SAW IT ON THE CONTRACT.

My 99 is also coming off lease in 22 days,I had a few problems like the rest of you. Driver window motor failure, front axle wine, and rear spindle bearings. Everything fixed fast except axle wine which I put up with. Never had rotor or pad problems and I am hard on the breaks. Also my 96 never had rotor problems.
I like selec-trac gives me the option of 4x4 when I want it.
As for new leases chrysler has taken a beating and they really do not want to lease but here is my best deal, from the same dealer I leased the previous two from. MSRP 29,810 which is an 02 with
26F and fogs, laredo I6. $3280 at inception and a payment of $352/month including tax 36 months. This is not bad I keep the same payment I had for the 1999 with about the same down money. Chrysler is supplying 2500 cash,1000 lease loyalty, and I am using the 500 military rebate. The other option is to buy a low mileage 01 for between 22000 and 24000 can't seem to find them any cheaper. They should be but dealers are trying to make a few bucks. My 99 residual is 18900 and try and find one selling at that price at a dealer very difficult, but some are out there. I test drove a Honda CRV,sorry not for me, I really like my GC. Now for the bad news, they have decontented the F package, no heated mirrors, you need the cold weather package, or seperate heated mirror option for 50 bucks, but hard to find, also no roof rack cross bars, and the radio has no cassette unless you pay extra, never used it anyway. I really like the heated mirrors makes me mad. The other deal was a really loaded up laredo MSRP 32,350 with $5731 at inception too much down in my book but that is the truck I really want. Wife says, you do not need a sun roof,oh well.

I used to work at a Jeep dealer and now own a 1999 Grand Cherokee. When I started to get brake throb, I took it to one of my mechanic friends I used to work with. He told me front rotor issues with Jeeps were common, and that replacing or turning (shaving them) the brakes was a short solution, unless they were turned on the axle. Basically it is not a rotor or axle issue, it is an issue of them matching up well, and with the new brake cutting machines a dealer can turn/shave the rotor smooth while matching it up exactly to the axle it is mounted on. I have since put 15,000 miles on and not had even an inkling of rotor throb in the wheel or pedals. My recommendation, before putting money into brakes, make sure they are turned while on the axle and this should solve your problems.

After reading all 500+ posts on here, I didn't find any similar circumstances and was wondering if anyone either had, or had heard of problems with the sunroof film on Grand Cherokees?

I have a 2000 Laredo model and recently noticed three areas where this film has become defected on my vehicle. The best way to describe what has happened, is that it looks as though a bird had an accident on my sunroof. However when trying to remove the markings, it appears "the accident" is some sort of rough silicone bubbling that can't be removed and looks to be part of the sunroof film itself.

I live in a relatively hot climate, which might lend this to happening, but actually noticed the issue this winter. Before I take it into the dealership I'd love to hear if anyone had similar problems themselves and what their experiences were. Perhaps this was just the result of something happening external to the vehicle itself (something dripped on it?), but it doesn't seem so, and I'd love to have some background to substantiate the possibility that it is a vehicle defect.

    Thanks in advance!

(oh, and for the record, I had the rotor problems too. But I guess I should consider myself lucky for making it to 25K before they showed up)

I hear this loud crunching noise from underneath whenever my 99 JGC Laredo goes thru a dip or bump in the road when it's cold outside. It's as if something is hitting against something and getting crunched. But this happens only in very cold weather. Has anyone out there experienced anything similar?? Thx.

Do you have the up-country suspension? I noticed that on my 99 and I had the up-country. I know people that did not have the uc and did not notice the noise. I did notice that it only happened when it was below 25 degrees, give or take a few degrees.

I purchased my 2002 JGC from Bill at JeepWarehouse.com back in October. He ordered it factory direct, had it shipped to a local dealer and arrived in perfect condition about 4 weeks after the order was placed. I even did the 0% financing thru him. I was a little nervous too but he is the real deal and I'm not sure that his prices can be beat on a brand new model.

This is a follow up posting. I am in the serious shopping mode for an SUV. I am taking a new job that will provide me with a pretty good car allowance.

My SUV will be used primarily on the roads, with a little off road on some weekends. My main reason for wanting 4WD is that we live in the mountains and at times get a good deal of snow. One of the main routes back into my area needs 4WD during the winter to get through the passes. 90% of the time it will be just me driving. My wife has a minivan for when we need to haul the kids.

That being said, I have test driven Tahoes, Envoys, Trailblazers, and Grand Cherokees. If $ was no object, I'd go with the Tahoe. However, I have found the Ltd. GC to be pretty sweet also, at a much better price. The local dealer is $199 below invoice, then a $2500 rebate from DC. That takes a GC Ltd. from $33,300, down to about $28K and change. It is the "base" Ltd. model, with leather and some other toys, including the 4.7 V-8.

I was very impressed with how it drove and the styling. Reading many of these posts, I am concerned about the reliability of them, but then, it does come with the 7yr/100K powertrain warranty ($50 deductable). We have received great service from this dealer on our Town and Country minivan.

I would appreciate some opinions as to how you have done with your Grand Cherokees and if you think this is a good deal.

    Thanks,

    Mike

You need an Audi quattro rather than an SUV if it is for only one person commuting, and not really going off road.

If you need the space occasionally, maybe a Forrester would serve you well, or an Escape or Santa Fe (big seller).

Why go for the gas guzzling, uncomfortable ride for such little use?

You didn't mention towing, space considerations, etc. in your post.

If you still want a fun SUV, then I'd recommend a Wrangler. Not only does it meet your other criteria, but it is also a convertible! You will have young girls checking you out and yelling and waving to you (if you are into that).

    good luck!
  • sebring95sebring95 Member Posts: 3,241
An audi quattro is going to run out of ground clearence too early for a mountain runner. Check out car and driver, they tested a bunch of sport-utes. The only one that went anywhere it wanted through deep snow was the Cherokee. Suburu got caught up in itself early on. There is a difference between driving on plowed streets and those that rarely see traffic, let alone a plow. I pulled a 4X4 blazer up a hill a few weeks ago because the highway tires they put on the things are worthless.

My dealer is Carl Gregory Chrysler Jeep in Johnson City, TN. The sales rep is Randy Weaver. He was the most knowlegable salesperson I have dealt with in my 15 years of car buying. Their phone number is 423-282-3011. They had 20 or so Grand Cherokees on their lot earlier this week. I went to jeep.com and did a search and was able to see their inventory and window stickers on each of their stock.

I still have not bought but I am leaning towards buying one of these.

    Good Luck
