They have alienated a large part of their buyers with this biggie! Let the letter writing begin!
Easy enough to check that.
Grab the drive shaft and try to turn it back and forth. If it goes, that is likely it.
Somehow the title "Lesser Cherokee" doesn't ring a bell.
Ideally for me, it would be a 4 or V6, with same styling as GC, and 2 solid axles, just a scaled down version. Also offer a "stripped" version with light weight, less doodads, etc. for the skiers, hunters, contractors, fuel conscious, and price conscious among us.
NOT COVERED:
Maintenance services and items used in such services
Glass, plastic lenses
Body and paint items, including soft trim
Snow plows, winches and trailer hitches
Wear items such as manual clutch assembly, brake pads, shoes, rotors, drums and belts
This is from their extended warranty page:

Patch the above together if needed to make it work.
We thought about extending the lease for 12 months, as it only has the 27,000 miles on it, at $40.00 less per month, but it will be out of warranty, so that didn't seem like a good idea. (Power door lock just broke, two days before turn in.)An extended warranty for the additional 12 months would have cost $45.00 a month, so it wipes out the benefite of the lower lease rate.
Thought about leasing a 2002 but the lease deals initially offered would have been more per month, notwithstanding $4,000 in incentives. Also wanted side curtain air bags, but our dealer told us there weren't any around with the Laredo v8. (Don't think he really wanted to look very hard.) Also, it looks identical to the 1999. I think we could have probably gotten a better deal eventually, but it was harder than it should have been. The high rates initially quoted got me thinking about other vehicles, and we wound up getting something else that was more expensive, but a better deal.
Anyway, I am sorry about the problems some people have had with their Grand Cherokees, but ours was actually a very good one and we were quite happy with it for three years. It was wonderful for trips and touring, and fun to drive around town. We will miss it, I'm sure.
Ive heard the redesign might be out in either 2004 or 2005 model year....

1. 4WD System: I don't plan to off road (I have a Wrangler for that), and the vehicle will see limited snow. My '96 w/ Quadra-Trac has never failed to get me through the slick stuff when called upon to do so. For this reason, I'm planning to order my new Jeep w/ Quadra-Trac II rather than Quadra-Drive. Does anyone know the differences in my older Quadra-Trac and the current version, and isn't it reputed to be quieter than the Quadra-Drive?
2. V-8 engines: As I understand it, the new HO V-8 only provides extra muscle when run on premium gas. 30 extra horses would surely be nice, but I don't plan to tow anything other than maybe a small U-Haul one day, and I'm hesitant to commit to the extra $$$ for the HO engine if the 235 HP "junior" version provides sufficient oomph w/ regular fuel. It's also my understanding that the HO engine is only available with the K pkg, which includes Quadra-Drive (ref my question #1). Anyone got any experience/advice for me here?
3. Anyone in the eastern Va area interested in a cherry one-owner '96 JGC Limited 4x4 V-8?
Many thanks for any help I can get.

Selec-trac: You can pick part-time 4X4 which sends equal power front to rear, full-time which sends power to the front as it detects slippage in the rear, or 4X2.
Quadra-trac II: Always in full-time mode (as described above). Bascially you can't lock it in part-time 4X4 or 4X2 like you can with Selec-trac.
Quadra-drive: Full-time system that sends wheel to whichever wheel is getting traction. This is different from the full-time above because it sends it to the individual wheel, as opposed to front/rear. No selection on this one either, always locked in full-time 4X4.
The system you have now is probably the same as Quadra-trac II.
My in-laws have a ltd with Quadra-drive and it is a bit noisey, and has some steering "jump" when the wheels are fully locked, but I believe all the full-time systems do this. It will also climb their very steep driveway in deep snow without missing a beat. The RX300 they test drove couldn't make it up. I'm considering a grand, but want the selec-trac because I want the flexiblity. Both full-time systems are fine for most drivers looking to get through snow, mud, etc. The Quadra-drive is superior for traction, but if quadra-trac has worked for you then go with that. Alot less to break IMHO.
The new V8 is more refined, powerful(acceleration) and sucks less fuel than the 318 V8 you have. It will tow light trailers fine, and I wouldn't spring for the HO. I'm a stickler for power, but the 4.7L is more than adequate. If you're going to be towing 5000# around alot, then maybe it would be worth it.

I would like to purchase a 2002 JGC Limited this time around, but I am very hesitant because of the reoccuring warped front rotors I have experienced on my '99. In addition, with only 27k miles on the odometer, I am annoyed that I have had to spend almost $700 on brake repairs.
I am interested to know if JGC V8s, '01 and '02 model years, are free of these problems? And if not what people think is a good replacement for the same amount of $$$, I am not interested in spending more than $35k on a SUV. It is a tough decission because overall I have been very happy with my '99 JGC despite all these problems.
How can this be??
Does anyone have the name and phone number of someone at Chrysler Finance I can speak with?
Looking forward to my new JGC.
Thanks,
-Pat
FORGOT TO MENTION THAT THE PRICE I GOT INCLUDED $4250 IN LEASE CASH
Can you give a break-down of the lease cash?
I thought the current incentive was $2500.
$2500 CONSUMER CASH
$1000 LEASE LOYALTY
I DO NOT KNOW WHERE THE OTHER $750 CAME FROM, MAYBE IT WAS AN ACCOUNTING ERROR ON THERE END? I FAILED TO ASK ABOUT IT WHEN I SAW IT ON THE CONTRACT.

I like selec-trac gives me the option of 4x4 when I want it.
As for new leases chrysler has taken a beating and they really do not want to lease but here is my best deal, from the same dealer I leased the previous two from. MSRP 29,810 which is an 02 with
26F and fogs, laredo I6. $3280 at inception and a payment of $352/month including tax 36 months. This is not bad I keep the same payment I had for the 1999 with about the same down money. Chrysler is supplying 2500 cash,1000 lease loyalty, and I am using the 500 military rebate. The other option is to buy a low mileage 01 for between 22000 and 24000 can't seem to find them any cheaper. They should be but dealers are trying to make a few bucks. My 99 residual is 18900 and try and find one selling at that price at a dealer very difficult, but some are out there. I test drove a Honda CRV,sorry not for me, I really like my GC. Now for the bad news, they have decontented the F package, no heated mirrors, you need the cold weather package, or seperate heated mirror option for 50 bucks, but hard to find, also no roof rack cross bars, and the radio has no cassette unless you pay extra, never used it anyway. I really like the heated mirrors makes me mad. The other deal was a really loaded up laredo MSRP 32,350 with $5731 at inception too much down in my book but that is the truck I really want. Wife says, you do not need a sun roof,oh well.

Daryl.
I have a 2000 Laredo model and recently noticed three areas where this film has become defected on my vehicle. The best way to describe what has happened, is that it looks as though a bird had an accident on my sunroof. However when trying to remove the markings, it appears "the accident" is some sort of rough silicone bubbling that can't be removed and looks to be part of the sunroof film itself.
I live in a relatively hot climate, which might lend this to happening, but actually noticed the issue this winter. Before I take it into the dealership I'd love to hear if anyone had similar problems themselves and what their experiences were. Perhaps this was just the result of something happening external to the vehicle itself (something dripped on it?), but it doesn't seem so, and I'd love to have some background to substantiate the possibility that it is a vehicle defect.
Thanks in advance!
(oh, and for the record, I had the rotor problems too. But I guess I should consider myself lucky for making it to 25K before they showed up)

My SUV will be used primarily on the roads, with a little off road on some weekends. My main reason for wanting 4WD is that we live in the mountains and at times get a good deal of snow. One of the main routes back into my area needs 4WD during the winter to get through the passes. 90% of the time it will be just me driving. My wife has a minivan for when we need to haul the kids.
That being said, I have test driven Tahoes, Envoys, Trailblazers, and Grand Cherokees. If $ was no object, I'd go with the Tahoe. However, I have found the Ltd. GC to be pretty sweet also, at a much better price. The local dealer is $199 below invoice, then a $2500 rebate from DC. That takes a GC Ltd. from $33,300, down to about $28K and change. It is the "base" Ltd. model, with leather and some other toys, including the 4.7 V-8.
I was very impressed with how it drove and the styling. Reading many of these posts, I am concerned about the reliability of them, but then, it does come with the 7yr/100K powertrain warranty ($50 deductable). We have received great service from this dealer on our Town and Country minivan.
I would appreciate some opinions as to how you have done with your Grand Cherokees and if you think this is a good deal.
Thanks,
Mike
If you need the space occasionally, maybe a Forrester would serve you well, or an Escape or Santa Fe (big seller).
Why go for the gas guzzling, uncomfortable ride for such little use?
You didn't mention towing, space considerations, etc. in your post.
If you still want a fun SUV, then I'd recommend a Wrangler. Not only does it meet your other criteria, but it is also a convertible! You will have young girls checking you out and yelling and waving to you (if you are into that).
good luck!
I still have not bought but I am leaning towards buying one of these.
Good Luck
