Do Grand Cherokees like to go thru fuel pumps and fuel sending units on a regular basis, or is it just mine? I bought a 1997 GC just about a year ago, and my hard starting problem came up again this morning. Wouldn't turn over for about 10 minutes and several cranks. I've had the problem since I got it, and replacing the fuel pump and sending units fixed it for a while. Looks like a third time for the pump. Does anyone else have a hard starting problem that was fixed by something other than fuel pumps? I'm taking the beast back in to the shop next Tuesday, and am hoping we don't have to replace the pump yet again. Many thanks!
We just bought a '98 JGC Laredo. Every Laredo I see has "Laredo" molded into the side molding. Every Limited I have seen has a Chrome plate after AC saying "Limited". Our AC has the chrome plate saying "Laredo". This is the only one I have seen. What is the difference? Why do I have a Limited plate?
You also have body-colored cladding & bumpers, not the usual grey plastic, am I right? It was a special Laredo that was offered for 1 year only. Your badge is silver, Limited badges then were gold. You also probably have the deep-dish style 15" wheels, not the 16 inchers that came on the Limiteds. There were probably other minor interior differences also, but I'm not sure.
blujeep, Yes. It has All that and Leather, Auto headlights, Steering wheel stereo controls, defrosting side mirrors, the rear view mirror adjust green when bright lights are behind us, fog lights, cd, infinity gold sound system, and others I probably haven't found yet. We had it for a week when my wife found the steering wheel stereo controls. Thanks for the info.
The 2002 GC's can be ordered now from your local dealer. They should all have spec books by now listing all of the available options and pricing. Delivery time is estimated at 8-10 weeks. I imagine some should start showing up on lots in late July or August. The 270HP High Output special edition can also be ordered now, but one drawback (for some) is that you can only get that model with the two-tone leather seats. I have not seen any pictures of the interior or exterior yet but hopefully dealers will have brochures soon.
Never had any real problems with the first two, and when there was a problem, it was fixed the first time.
But now HELP!!! I have a Champagne LTD 2001 V-8 4X4, every option with 9100 miles.
Here is the list, If anyone has any ideas please HELP.
1. Brakes, mine started the vibration. The front cylinders were both leaking and the rotors were warped. Sounds like this will come back. They did say there was a service bulletin.
2. An intense vibration in the steering when you turn the wheel to the right, while stopped. This just started. They replaced the steering box assembly. Drove it for 15 miles and the problem was back. They started giving me that song and dance about this being normal.
3. When you turn right into a drive way you here a metal to metal snap. The dealer even heard the sound and then wrote on the repair order that they could not duplicate, another, this is normal line.
4. Stains appear on all the windows except for the windshield when water or dust gets on them. It's like some type of stain. They cannot remove this. I think it must be some chemical used in shipment.
5. Rough idle from time to time.
This is a shame that such a beautiful ride is turning into a nightmare. What get's me is the "could not duplicate" and "normal" lines.
I told them that I expect a car with 9100 miles on it to feel and drive EXACTLY like the other 2001 units sitting on the lot, and if they cannot fix the car then they should contact DC and start the process of returning the car.
By the way, if anyone is interested, I know a great group of attorneys in San Francisco that deal with massive failures of autos.
If you have heard of the Dodge Dakota CT then you know that DC lied to all of us about it's owning capacity. To make a long story short, we won in a court in LA.
The sad part is I love my Chrysler Products, I have a 94 RAM that is a great truck.
This may be the last straw, this time. maybe some of us should write the new President of DC.
use adhesive remover, those you get from platic/plexi shop to remove the stain. I had the same problem after I replace the windshield - they are stubborn and cannot be removed with ordinary window cleaners. Make sure you use soft cloth not to scratch the glass. I hope you succeed.
That's funny about the front stabilizer link, I mentioned this and the shocks, the "lead" shop mechanic just looked at me like I'm stupid.
I'll try the adhesive remover also.
The noise when you turn the steering to the right is a killer. We won't be able to live with this. As you turn the steering wheel to the right you feel this pressure as you turn the wheel along with a straining noise. They are trying to tell me this is normal. If it was normal then why did it only start after 8000 miles.
This article from the same people who can find nothing wrong, when the vehicles are brought in to the "5 Star" dealerships, with the various complaints seen on this board. Go figure!
I just purchased a 2001 Grand Cherokee Limited and absolutely love it so far aside from one thing. Since day one, when I take my foot of the gas pedal I hear a fairly loud whirling/whining noise that appears to come from the front end. It is louder at lower speed and persistent, but also is noticeable at speeds over 50. My question is if anyone else has experienced this, if it is normal, and any suggestions as to what it may be. Any info would be helpful as this is driving me nuts and I want to provide my service dept with any info I can. Thank, my email is bbell23@yahoo.com
I'm currently in the market for a new car, and I'm looking at buying a 1996 JGC Limited 4x4 V8 with all the bells & whistles. The person selling it is asking $15,000. The Jeep is fully loaded and only has 23k miles on it. I'm looking for any information--pros/cons--for this model and year. Also, does the price seem reasonable? Any information with regard to the above would be greatly appreciated.
I've had my 199 JGC for almost a year, and it's had a chronic idle/stall problem. I've taken it to all 3 dealers in my area, and they seem to recognize it as a computer malfunction. They say they're waiting on a fix from Jeep, and then they'll "flash" my computer, but I haven't seen any fix yet. It flucuate up to 2500 rpm's sometimes, and I find it a safety hazard. Is there anyone with the same problem, and is there a fix? I've thought about trading up for a 2000 or 2001, does anyone know if this problem has been remedied on the more recent models? thanks.
i dont know if this helps, but i used to have a 99 neon and was having the exact same problem. they replaced my throttle body and the problem went away, and has not come back since. maybe that helps.
I just retreived my 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee from its second home, the dealership service center. I have experienced the brake problems several of the owners have mentioned, as well as too many other problems to list. (OK, and abbreviated list: complete tear down and rebuild of both transmission and transfer case, faulty shock, new fuel pump, new spark plugs, stalling problem, alignment problems, massive oil leak, and more -- and I've only had the car six months!) I am beginning a Lemon Law claim, since (though I bought mine used) it is still under manufacturer's warranty. The attorney I spoke with is very confident that we will prevail. I don't know what state those of you that are having problems are in (and therefore what your Lemon Law provisions are), but attorneys who deal with these cases know the Grand Cherokee and its many defects.
My rotors have been ground/turned three times, and replaced once, in the 5,000 miles I've had the car. FYI, there was a technical service bulletin put out by Jeep that the front rotors and pads are defective (and therefore have to be replaced at their cost), but unfortunately for me I didn't know that until I had shelled out a couple hundred of my own dollars. They finally replaced all the rotors and pads after I paid a "deductible," but it was back in the shop for warping again after three hundred miles. The latest development was regrinding the (brand new) rotors and extending my manufacturer's warranty through 75,000 miles at Jeep's expense. (This came about after the intervention of Chrysler's area rep, in response to my "I really am going to file a lawsuit" letter.) However, the brakes still squeak (the shuddering should return within a few days), and the transmission still sounds like it is falling off the car whenever it shifts.
Chrysler is unbelievably lucky to have escaped a class-action lawsuit thus far. This is my third, and final, Jeep. (I am happy to swap strategies, sob stories, etc.: BelinB@aol.com)
I have over 18000km on my 2000 GAL (delivered Set/2000) with V8 and QT II and the last time I was on this board was at about 10000km. The only problem I have is the front rotors -- I am due for the third set !!! I read from this board that an bulletin/ recall is scheduled before end of the year. Can any one substantiate this? Otherwise , this is one of the nicest and trouble-free vehicle I've ever own - lots of power, comfortable, solid and squeak/rattle-free. I haven't experience any other problems like gear whine, rough idle, left or right pull...... Will report again in a few months.
IN my message posted a few days ago I said the assistant service manager of my local Jeep dealer told me "to expect a recall on rotors by the end of the year". I didn't ask him to give me his source. His personal vehicle is a 2000 Jeep AC which makes him very aware of the problem. At the present time my wifes JGC with fresh turned rotors at 6000 miles was just rear ended by a MAT bus on the freeway and will most probably be considered a total loss. Even though the brake rotor problem really ticked me off we will most likely replace the JGC with a new one. The thing can take a major hit from the rear and provide excellent protection to the occupants.
Sorry about your wife's accident, but it's good to know that the JGC can protect the occupants from a rear-end impact from a bus! Finally something positive about JGC's on this board. LoL!
I have a '93 JGC Limited that is in need of a recharge for the air conditioning. Does anybody know what type of refrigeration was used in '93, or have any idea where i could find out what it is?? Thanks, Craig
I need your help!! I'm looking at a leftover 2000 ZR2 with everything but a sonroof and a 98' Grand Cherokee Limited V8 w/36,000 miles and every option known to man. The ZR2 price is $23,000 and the Cherokee is $18,900. I drive 45,000 miles a year and often have about 400-500 lbs. in the truck. I love the Cherokee for the toys, 4 doors and liftgate. I love the ZR2 because it's brand new and reinforced chassis. If anyone knows, just how special is this ZR2 package? Is it that big of a difference? I need whichever one will last longer and be tougher. Please HELP!
I saw a '94 Laredo with 109,000 miles advertised for $7,900. It looks like a pretty good price, but there are an awful lot of unhappy people on this board and most of you don't have nearly this many miles. Plus, I can't find much on the '94 models. Any suggestions?
I have a 17' boat I'd like to tow with it. Is it up to the task?
I just checked out the frontal crash test results where they rate the JGC as marginal. That may be but I rate it excellent in rear end crashes. Thanks for wishing well to my wife whose JGC was hit hard in the rear end by an MTA RTD bus on a west LA freeway. I should have sain in my origional message that it was my 28 year old daughter that was the driver and lone occupant at the time. She is sore and shaken up but doing well. The JGC body is about a foot shorter and the back section of the whole unibody is bent down at about a 30 degree angle at the rear door handles. There is no question that we will replace it with another JGC.
I have a 2000 jeep grand chereokee laredo. My keyless entry remote works on and off, both remote are doing it. Replace the battery too. Does anyone know what maybe wrong?
I have a 1998 Grand Cherokee Larado 5.2L V8 with the 28Z Package. Love it. I bought it in April 98 and it now has 93K miles on it.
I have not had many problems but have had some.
I replaced the brakes at 45K. Which seemed late for a V8 and a vehicle that ways over 5000 lbs.
I did have to have the entire rear axle replaced at 36K, thank goodness it was still under warrenty. They told me there were small holes in the axle that was causing a roaring noise in the rear. It had been there from the time I bought it, but a friends dad got in the car and said that is not normal! I took it in and they would not let me drive it off the lot.
I have the oil changed and everything checked out every 4000 miles. I drive for a living and the guys at in the service dept know me when I drive up.
I did have to have the fuel pump replaced at 50K. I got stranded on the freeway when I thought I had a 1/4 of tank of gas left. I was livied when I found out I was out of gas, because I almost got rear-end 3 times by semi's doing 70 mph.
Last week (Jun 28, 2001), I got in my car to drive 3 hours and could not turn the vehicle out of my driveway. Turns out Power Steering fluid was all over the garage under my car. I had to drive it 20 min to the dealer without any power steering. I am a 125 lb female, I had to find strength that I never knew I had to drive this car without power steering. I hope no one has to go through that! They replace the Power Steering pump and it dawned on me that I have almost 100,000 miles.
As I sat in the dealer waiting I started thinking of the things I had resently had done, most were normal maintenance, hoses, belts, transmission flush, radiator flush, etc. But I got to wondering what was going to happen next.....
I am looking at several SUV's, to trade in my Gr Cherokee. I am looking at the new Toyota Sequoia. Haven't decide to trade it yet, but looking at this web site explains some of the trouble my dad has had with his 96 Gr Cherokee.
Took the Lardeo to the 5 Star dealer this morning. Wife had complained about long start times and the %*$#&$* rotors are warped. 17,500 miles on the '00. The '99 I had before had rotors replaces at 5700 miles and they were warped again at 23,000 when I decided to trade it in. (I had a number of other repairs..rear end, 2 window motors, a/c leak, shift/starter interlock, etc.
Dealer called, they replaced the fuel pump, bad seal. Declined to fix the rotors. I had given them copies of the 2 service receipts on the '99 with the message that if DC did not want to fix them, they can put me on the never again list... After getting word that they had declined, I call the 800 DC customer service number and opened a case. I'll see what happens.
BTW, I checked last week and Autozone has replacement rotors for less than $50/pair including tax. If DC will not do anything, I will probably pick up a pair to put on. Anyone have any hints, warnings or cautions about replacing the rotors? (2 wd, not 4x4)
Be aware that sometimes a dealer will over-torque the lugs when rotating the tires and warp the rotors (happened on my 300M). I now rotate tires myself and hand-touque the wheels.
My '93 JGC has an automatic antenna that does not work. well, the motor works, but the antenna just stays in one place - it does not move up or down. it doesnt seem to be a case of just needing lubrication, it more seems like what ever is supposed to be pulling the antenna back in (or pushing up) is broken off. Has anyone had this and know how to fix it? If not, how do i unkook the motor (it makes a terrible noise when i turn the truck off) Thanks
The CV joint connecting the front drive shaft with the differential has blown out twice in two successive years, both times offroading in and around Moab, Utah. It left me virtually stranded each time and took a great deal of my vacation time to replace since the part was not readily available. A Moab mechanic said the joint could not handle the torque generated; Jeep denies this and said that the problem was that the drive shaft was not properly installed at to it's adjustable length. Moab says the joint should either be beefed up or replaced with a U-joint. Jeep did in fact redesign the CV joint for the V-8 engine, but not the inline 6, my engine. The CV joint has now been replaced THREE times and Jeep assures me the vehicle will now be OK for offroading.I'm not taking the chance (If you have ever been stranded 50 miles into a 100 mile canyon rim trail requiring four wheel drive in the middle of nowhere you would understand). Has anyone else experienced similar problems? My model is a 1997 Limited.
I recently took the Jeep in for some service work on the transmission. My first thought was ... "Oh S***, not the tranny!"
Well, it turns out there was a slight leak from the driveshaft where it attaches to the front differential. There was also a leak on the shaft coming from the transfer case to the back differential. But it was from a pinched pressure hose... so it wasn't really a leak.
The Jeep dealer in Lancaster, CA, where I took (and bought) it was great. It was over 36,000 miles but they covered it under a warranty repair. They did a great job and explained exactly what was going on. I'm a FIRM believer that you should talk with the technician who did the work. This does several things: it shows them you care, it shows them that you are interested in what is going on with the vehicle, and it shows them that you won't let them get away with anything and keep an eye on what is going on.
I was impressed by their service. Our JGC took us to Colorado up to Rocky Mtn Ntl Park with no problems at all. JEEZ, there are a lot of Jeeps in Colorado! Now I want my Wrangler!
A few statistics that I thought you may be interested in. According to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety/Highway Loss Data institute:
"Which crashes are most likely to cause injuries?
In urban areas, motorists are most likely to be injured in head-on collisions and crashes involving red light running. Occupant injuries occurred in 45 percent of both head-on crashes and red light running crashes the Institute studied. Left-turn crashes produced the highest number of occupant injuries. Forty-one percent of urban crashes associated with a vehicle turning left into oncoming traffic involved injuries. These crashes often involve a side impact. More than a third each of crashes typed as running a traffic control, rear-ending a stopped or stopping vehicle, and running off the road involved injury. In contrast, injuries occurred in only 16 percent of crashes involving lane change maneuvers".

Howdy y'all! (sorry, I spend a lot of time in Texas)
I have a 1999 JGC and am trying to install a forward facing car seat for my one year old daughter. The manual indicates that there is a tether anchor behind some seating positions but does not illustrate where. I called my dealer, and they were of no help. If anyone has encountered this situation, I would greatly appreciate some advice.
I'm looking for advice on select-trac vs. quadra-trac 4wd systems. I have found 2 vehicles to choose from: --2000 jgc limited v-8 taupe frost ext. --taupe int. (Sharp), 10,800 miles, dealer demo with trailer hitch and quadra-trac. this one has never been titled so full warranty is available. Asking 29,400. Option 2 is a 2000 jgc limited v-8 14,000 miles sienna red ext.--sandstone int. select-trac. Private party, asking 27,500. 2yr left on warranty. I thought i wanted the select-trac so i would have the option of 4wd or 2wd, but not sure now. Looking for opinions/advice.
Stay with the Select-Trac. Less problem and less prone to gear whine problems. The Select -Trac is very reliable and is strongly recommanded by the service manager at the time when I bought my 2000 GCL V8 last Sept ( My 2nd Cherokee bought from there) Unfortunately they couldn't locate one due to year-end inventory and I bought one with the Quadra-Trac . I have reported regularly on this board that my Gcl is trouble free at 12000 miles other than warped rotors every 4000miles . For your info, my last GCL was a 1993 GCL I-6 lemon but the Select Trac lasted till the day I traded it in at 130,000 miles. Good luck and enjoy.
The last 8 months have been relatively trouble free. The V-8 provides excellent excelleration and is great for towing up to 6500 lbs. ANY JGC with the V-8 should easily haul your 17' boat, mrushing ($7900 for a '94 seems high, but is ball park). Recently, I noticed a whine in the right rear when I removed my foot from the gas pedal and coasted (about 50mph). This may be related to the very slight, occasional pulse I feel through the gas pedal at the same speeds (transmission problem?). Also, when the tires were rotated, the whining decreased-it is still noticeable, but not in the right rear (tire problem?)! Yes, bbel, it sounds exactly like your problem. Of the other problems originally encountered, the security system and electrical system now work fine. My security system was malfunctioning or just not working, at first. The key less remote wouldn't work AND the door lock would freeze. To enter my vehicle on a cold winter day(<32 degrees F), I had to leave the vehicle UNLOCKED. This was a known problem early in 2001 model year. The part was redesigned by DC, became available in Feb 2001, and was replaced in late March. Please see my first post #299 tcn2k. Gas mileage (overall) consistently averages about 17.5 mpg. I really like my Jeep especially for towing and winter driving and plan to keep it a long time. There is still time to decide if the extended warranty is needed.
i am in the process of getting a v8 2wd grand cherokee laredo, but after reading some of the things said on this bored i have become a little apprehensive about getting it. Are their any happy owners of this car out there, at all, and is it only the 4wd that has these numerous problems, or does the 2wd drive suffer this same myriad of problems, please respond, thank you.
The service manager of the so called 5 star dealership called me this afternoon... after hearing my complaint that on my '99 GCL and 00' GCL that all 3 sets of rotors had warped at 5700 miles, 14,000 then 15,000 miles (first 2 on the '99) last on the '00, he is not going to do anything about replacing them. I have the case number and plan to contact the DC customer service center again tomorrow. So far they have declined to replace the rotors as I requested. I have nothing in writing, so I at least plan to force them to blow me off in writing so if and when they do have a recall, I might be able to recover the $50 I spent to purchase after market rotors from Autozone.
I basically told the SM that if DC would not stand behind their product any better than this, that they could put me on the list of folks that will never buy another product from Jeep, Chrysler or Dodge. I probably will not get any satisfaction other than complaining, though I might forward copies of my complaints to NHTSA.
I have a JGC Laredo (1996) with 120,000 miles on it. Recently the oil pressure gauge is acting strange and I would appreciate any feedback on this. When I start the engine (cold), the gauge jumps to 40 (middle position). As the engine warms up the gauge starts varying between 20 & 40 (when I stop at light or idle the oil pressure drops to 20 & increases back to 40 when I speed up). This continues for a while and when the engine temp is at 210 (middle position of the temp gauge) the pressure gauge drops completely to zero during idle and/or stop. The gauge increases from zero to 40 as I speedup. The first time it happened I got very concerned, stopped immediately and checked the oil quantity. Oil level is always in the safe region and I do not have any oil leaks. The engine temp also stays more or less in the middle (210)). Went to a mechanic and he is suggesting the oil pressure sensor has gone bad and there is no imeediate danger! What do you all think? Should I live with this or is it serious enough to spend $200 over it? Thank you in advance for your comments.
The '96 GCL was decent with exception of sway bar links which died reguarly. The '99 has only just turned 30K and we have our second sticking caliper, a rear one this time and smoking hot by the time I got home (only 1 mile from where the stink started) and the rear georotor assembly is toast (only 7K miles after dealer serviced it).
Nothing by paved road driving, oil every 3K, and other recommened services. I am looking to bail. This is not how a $39K vehicle should act.
What is a link on how to build a DC buy back scenario? Paul
Have not heard back from DC about my complaint yet. Spent 2 hours yesterday trying to change out the rotors. Autozone sold me 2 rotors for the 00' Grand Cherokee... Had to buy a 1/2" drive breaker bar and 18mm socket to get the caliper loose. Finally get it off, the %*&%&#( rotors don't fit. Took the 2 wrong rotors and the one I had off the JGC back up there. The manager who looked up the number/price twice was not in. They gave me my money back and told me that the correct rotor was a special order, double the price of they had originally sold me. They said they would have the manager call me today, since he is the only one that can authorize a discount for a 'special order' part. Not happy with either Jeep or Autozone at this point.
'00 JGC limited I am having problems with the auto head lamps having a mind of their own dealer says DC knows of the problem but as of yet has no fix. anyone else having this problem? As for the other issues, brakes: no problem, erratic idle: no problem, vibration: no problem. I am pulling a 25' boat that weighs over 7,000lbs and am having no problems! maybe you guys are babying your jeeps too much, treat them like the workhorses they are and quit taking them to the "doctor" every month. It's not a cute little dodge neon, it's a Jeep

I have a 17' boat I'd like to tow with it. Is it up to the task?
Thanks

Think Chrysler will have to issue a recall???

I basically told the SM that if DC would not stand behind their product any better than this, that they could put me on the list of folks that will never buy another product from Jeep, Chrysler or Dodge. I probably will not get any satisfaction other than complaining, though I might forward copies of my complaints to NHTSA.

Nothing by paved road driving, oil every 3K, and other recommened services. I am looking to bail. This is not how a $39K vehicle should act.
What is a link on how to build a DC buy back scenario? Paul
