It's taken a while to work out some bugs, but I really love this vehicle. I6, 2WD, No tire problems, no rotor problems, no tranny problems. Avg 22 mpg highway, 18 city. So far, had to put a A/C evaporator core in, replaced front sway bar, fixed a leaky rear end seal, replaced some vinyl trim on the inside of passenger door, and hooked a bungee strap to the luggage rack on top to keep it from rattling. Just put a slick Kenwood stereo in, and loving the vehicle. Got 60,000 out of the first set of Wranglers, went to Bridgestone Dueler H/L's. So far 68k miles, and looks as good as any anything on the road.
Well my brand new Steel Blue V8 Ltd Selec-Trac came in last night and today I went for a test drive before inking the deal. Guess what – the damn front diff howls. Not bad but it’s there and I simply will not roll the dice on this car.
Funny thing too – the fact that it was the front making the noise and not the 44 rear. I know this because with the Selec-Trac I was able to first add in the front drive (FT4W) and compare that with (2WD) mode. The howl came on in the 55-60 mph range under accel in 4WD. There was no noise on decel and no noise on accel or decel with 2WD.
I thought about taking it anyway and just hope the noise goes away. But I have worked on Diffs in the past, and this noise rarely goes away with time.
This thing had 3 miles on it. I could smell the engine coming up to temperature – probably for the first time. I was so close – but I had to turn it down.
I have waited over 2 years for them to fix this thing and it looks like they still don’t have it right – simply unbelievable! Trouble is, I need a car badly. Don’t know what I’m going to do now.
I caught the tail end of a national TV commercial last night advertising a JGC Laredo for $299 per mo. for 36 mo. with $1706 total down (included fees but not tax). Did I catch that correctly or is anyone else aware of such a deal? Thanks
I remember you posting at this conference well over a year ago about buying a Grand Cherokee Jeep. I use to be one of the more active members here 1 1/2 years ago. I purchased my 99 Grand Cherokee limited in June 1999 and returned it to Chrysler through a lemon buy back in March 2000.
My question to you is why would you want to spin the dice on Chrysler's Grand Cherokee Jeeps. If you have been coming here at this conference for as long as you said then you know about all the probems that this Jeep has had and continues to have? I could never understand why someone would consider buying a Grand Cherokee if they read about all the problems associated with them. I remember finding this site about 3 weeks after purchasing my Jeep and all I could say to my self was "What a mistake I just made, I wish I found this site before I purchased my Jeep".
Have you looked at the 2001-2002 Pathfinder? I almost purchased the 2001 Pathfinder after my buyback. I ended up with a 2000 SE Maxima. I strongly would sugggest staying away from the Jeep Grand Cherokee. I am truely amazed when a I stop back to this conference and still see the same problems occurring now that were happening 2 years ago.
My 2001 JGC is, so far, the best new vehicle I have ever purchased. It came with no flaws and does not rattle. The seats are comfortable and appear to be designed just right for me. It handles well and the controls are well placed. The awd handled flawlessly during the winter. With the rear net, it is easy to keep my dog in the cargo area. With the bike rack attached to the rear tow bar, the GC is large enough to take all my daughter's stuff off to college, and then have fun on the way back.
From reading other posts, I realize previous model year Jeeps had many problems. I think Jeep has done a terrific job addressing old problems in the new vehicles.
So you enjoy your Maxima and I will enjoy my Jeep.
well, it's been almost 3 months since i picked up my '01 and thus far i've logged over 5100 mi with no problems. i love the torque of the v-8 and everything that came w/the 28k package. after making my 1st long road trip, i can say my jeep travels very nicely-- a smooth, quiet ride where i ave'd about 20 mpg.
I have a '98 JGC that "surges". It feels like the transmission is actually downshifting. It only lasts a couple of seconds then goes back to normal. It's been doing this since brand new. I took it to the dealer at least 3 times, they put it on the analyzer and couldn't find anything wrong. Tried to tell them that it only happens when it's under load, but they blew me off. Any suggestions?
Anyone with a potential Lemon Law problem should click on Safetyforum.com and especially their Monday, March 19th Press Release: "Chrysler Renews Efforts to Hide Lemon Documents."
I put on 12500 km since 9/00 , I reported at 4000km I noticed a faint whining noise but hasn't got worse, maybe I have read too much on this forum and my ears are getting too sensitive then.I replaced the front rotors at 7400 km and scheduled to go for the 2nd pair next Tues.I love this solid , powerful beast and not a single rattle or defect other than the rotors. It is A LOT better than my previous first-run lemon '93 GCL IL6 with Select trac -- everything you can see from the driver's seat has been repaired or replaced ( gauges, radio x 8! ,AC evaporator, alternator......etc, etc.) However, My brother's '99 GCL with V8 and QD is a totally different story, the whining is unbearable and he had replaced the rotors 3 or 4 times within 50000 km. BUT, I spoke to him this morning and he said DC had finally replaced the front shaft / yoke or something and the rotors are still good after 15000km. Both items were replaced under new DC bulletins and he said dealers should know. For the first time for a long while, he is really enjoying his GCL. Keep bugging your service rep. and good luck.
Just spent a very frustrating day at the jeep dealer test driving used 98 ZJ.s. Some of you know I turned down a 01 LTD I ordered because the front diff Howled. So I figure I'll get a good used one and drive it a couple years until Jeep gets a new axle supplier - I am now convinced nothing will change until Dana is out of here.
So anyway we go for a spin in a Slate 5.9 - real sweet and muscular. Nice sounding but a little too much exhaust note for my tastes - I'm pushing 50 so you understand. Love the wheels and the upscale interior - but of course, the rear diff started screaming at about 65 MPH. So I had to turn it down. They had two white 5.9's but I don't care for white too much.
So then we went to the 5.2's - 1998 still. Got on board a Platinum with agate inside. Started it up and faintly heard lifter noise that didn't go away for about 10 minutes. The engine never did idle right - kinda lopped. Got it up to speed and at around 50 or 60 the whole thing kinda shook. You could feel it in the steering wheel. It felt like one of the drive-shafts was out of balance. Couldn't really tell if the diffs were noisy, I was too busy trying to figure out where the vibration came from. So I turned that one down.
So then we jumped in a Slate 5.2 1998. Seemed perfect. Engine idled and ran great, no vibrations and couldn't detect any noise. I told the salesman - "looks like we got a keeper". So we went back to the dealership and they let me have it for a few hours - I took 3. I went all the way to the mountains to visit my dad (45 mi. one way) and took him for a spin. Well there were a few minor things wrong - Transmission seemed to want to rev a little before hitting second, Right seat back rest adjuster had a stripped gear and, of course, the rotors were warped. But nothing that couldn't be fixed. But then I heard it - that little bit of wine that came on right at 65 MPH. Granted, it wasn't bad but it was there. It may have been the front diff - couldn't really tell. That's the trouble with Quadra Trac and QD. The front diff just goes along for the ride about 99% of the time.
Since I wasn't really crazy about the Slate color I turned it down. If it had been platinum, I would have made an offer. I almost offered 18,500 or 19,000 because he kept asking me to make him a ridiculous offer - end of the month an all.
So that was my day - up to my armpits in noisy diffs and warped rotors. Just another day drive'n a jeep
George - I always wanted the jeep because of the V8 power. Everything else was gutless or way too expensive (eg. land Cruiser) or too big. Also the cabin luxury offered by the GC LTD is far above all other brands IMHO. I also liked having control of the 4WD modes like you get with Selec-Trac. Everyone else is going to Slip before grip AWD couplings - aka 4WD for Dummies. Finally, there's the styling which I think is much more attractive than the other "boxes" on wheels. However, I agree, there are a lot more choices available and Pathfinder finally put some muscle under the hood. I may consider it.
Bought a 2000 V8 GCL last year and needless to say I am very discouraged. We don't even have 5000 miles on the thing and it's been in the shop three times.
The check engine light keeps popping on and the ride is absolutely atrocious. At speeds over 40 the thing starts to shake like there is a 60 mile an hour wind hitting it.
The first time the light came on, we took it to the dealer and they seemed totally confused. They first told me it had something to do with wiring, then they changed the spark plugs and "de-carbonized the engine". Sounds like a bunch of hog wash to me. They seemed to look totally confused as I watched them working on my truck.
Subsequent to that visit the truck seemed to work fine... for two days. I got in the truck two days later went to turn on the lights and realized I had none. My wife took the keys out of it and went to call the 800 service number and as I was standing there with the door open... the lights suddenly came on. This of course led to service 2 for which they couldn't find anything wrong with the vehicle (looked at me like I was crazy).
Again truck seemed fine for a few weeks until yesterday when the friggin engine light went on again and the rough ride returned!!!!
Any suggestions.... we've taken in to two different clueless dealerships for service and the dealer who sld us the car can shove their 5 star service because it has been non-existent.
Anyone have any ideas??? I'm about ready to start looking into lemon laws!!! At this point I'd settle for just having my money back.
I just happen to have a brand new 2001 DC GC service manual - doesn't everyone? Actually I had it in preparation for getting a new GC which, as you know, I'm not going to get now. Also I'm a little obsessive compulsive when it comes to mechanical things. This thing costs $100, weighs 5.5 lbs and is 3" thick - and I will be returning it.
Anyway, I know you have a 2000 but it's all pretty much the same. I'll just give you some possible leads. First the diagnostic chart "possible cause" for rough engine idle: idle speed set to low, idle mixture to lean or to rich, vacuum leak, faulty coil (as you may know this a coil over plug engine - i.e. 8 coils!), incorrect engine timing, dirty or incorrectly gapped spark plugs, dirt or water in fuel system, faulty fuel pump, blown cylinder head gasket, low compression, burned, warped or pitted valves, plugged or restricted exhaust system.
I do know that the 99's and the 2000's had a rash of fuel pump problems and the main symptom was rough idle and stalling. I know people who went through several fuel pumps.
Regarding the "Check Engine" light - aka "Malfunction Indicator Light" (MIL) - man that's a tough one. This light can come on for one of two reasons. 1) one of your engine sensors, that effects emissions has created a Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) that is being stored in the Power Train Control Module (PCM) which can only be extracted by using a DRB scan tool connected to your Data link connector - lower left edge of instrument panel. Keep in mind, it takes (3) good [driving] trips (nothing malfunctioning) to make the MIL go off by itself but the DTC stays stored. If the problem is a non-emission problem and the problem is repaired or ceases to exist, the PCM cancels the code after 40 warm-up cycles. Also it can take up to 2 failures in a row to turn on the MIL. 2) one of your engine sensors is malfunctioning.
Well, this might at least allow you to ask some probing questions. The manual fills about 100 pages on the subject.
Regarding the shaking, really only (2) things could cause this: Either something rotating (tires, wheels, driveshafts) is out of balance or you have an instability problem (Death Wobble). Usually the DW is caused by improperly installing suspension mods - not very common on a stock vehicle. I really need more info (rhytmic vib?, steering wheel shake?, etc.).
The 2001 Pathfinder will not compare to the Jeep's V8 power, not much will. But nothing will even come close to the dismal reliability records of the Jeep Grand Cherokee. I have to agree with you about the interior layout and exterior styling of the JGC, but all these features have little meaning if your Jeep is sitting in your 5 Star dealership's repair shop.
My 99 Grand Cherokee Limited had a shaking-vibration problem which was caused by wheels that were out of round and could not be correctly balanced. I finally had them checked on a Hunter GSP 9700 Vibration System and three wheels showed "Suggest Rim Replacement." Jeep replaced the wheels and the vibration/balance problems went away.
The 1998 Grand Cherokee Laredo (I/15,000 miles on it) I bought last year periodically does not start. When the problem occurs, the dashboard gauges and other electrical come on, but the engine does not turn over. Eventually, the vehicle will start, but how or why I do not know. (BOW: The vehicle came up clean in CarFax.)
I've returned it to the dealer three times for repairs, but the mechanics find nothing wrong with it. I am quickly approaching double figures in the number of times I've had to call Daimler/Chrysler Roadside Assistance, including two calls within two hours. Does anyone besides me have this problem? Thank you for passing on your ideas and experiences!
Hello everyone and thanks for all the information. I recently purchased a 99 Laredo with 16,000 miles on it for $20,500. I-6, Sienna, running boards, dual power seats, security, Infinity sound system, etc. Started looking for a 2001 but could barely afford a Laredo without options. I put a deposit on the 99 and then read all of your comments. I had noticed a pull to the right and brake shuddering. They said they would repair. After I read your comments I called and said that I wanted the rotors, pads, etc. replaced with new parts which they were happy to do and the brakes are great. However, I do have the pull to the right even though they said they did an alignment. Does anyone know what could be causing the pull to the right? Perhaps, if I tell them how to fix it they may be able to! Also, when I shift into reverse, the transmission makes a clunking noise. Is this normal? Any info./help you can give me would be much appreciated. I've always wanted a JGC and got what I wanted-I think-be careful what you wish for...
Has anyone heard of a permanent fix for the brake rotor problem? Driving the other day, I again felt the vibration upon braking that can only mean another brake rotor problem (number three!!!). I do not want to bring the SUV to the dealer only to have them cut the rotors again.
Well, if they have already cut them, they may have to replace them. Most rotors can only be turned once before they go under specs and need replacing (I'm no expert on this...just going from past experience, YMMV). Will they do it under warranty because it is a continuing problem, or will they try to bail out under the 12,000 mile brake warranty? Let us know what happens :-) (good luck).
Just got my second set today at 13000km under warranty ; last set at 7500km. Yes, the service manager says he cannot do it forever and have to charge me after warranty. I told him I will fight all the way when that time comes. He blames my driving habit, tells me to downshift etc etc. I said maybe I shouldn't brake at all or make a hole in the floor pan and stop the GAL like carney in the Flint stones !!.
I am thinking of installing a set of after market rotors., like :
Same as everyone else here, front rotors warped were turned town. They warped again and were replace at which time the rear rotors were turned down. I just took it to the dealership with 14,800 miles on it and they said it needs new rears and the fronts turned. I told them I fail to see how making a defective rotor thinner is going to last more than a thousand miles and they agreed. The dealer said they would cover the cost even though it's beyond the 12,000 mile warranty because there are so many coming in. At what point is Jeep going to admit they have a problem and make these from a better material? Any information on this problem or names to contact at Jeep would be appreciated. We should not be afraid to keep a 40,000 vehicle after 12,000 miles are up.
Since I bought my GCL, the engine makes a noise when I accelerate to or past 50 mph. It happens right at 50 mph and never before. It sounds almost like engine knocking from bad gas. They have looked at it 4 times (the first 3 they said they couldn't hear it. the 4th time I made the guy ride it with me. then, they heard it). still, they say they can't identify it.
does anybody else have this problem? has anyone had this resolved?
Just purchased 5.2 36,000 miles. A whine makes itself known at 65 mph. Is it the front diff. and how concerned should I be? Otherwise everything else is fine, and I love being in the gas club!!
This is my first posting but have been a reader for sometime. I am on my 3rd JGC and finally having a problem. The new one is a 2001 Limited with V8 and 5spd. auto 2WD and trac lok rear. My problem occurs when shifting into drive. There is a slight hesitation, and as it shifts into drive there is a fairly loud clunk, sort of like gears grinding. Been in two different dealers, six times. New rear end, new driveshaft, no help. Chrysler now says it is the transmission clutches, they don't why, they are working on it but no fix as yet. DC says there are numerous complaints. Does not occur into reverse and only in drive after the trans is warm.Considering the buy back or exchange trail. Like the vehicle a lot but can't stand the noise.DC tech rep says it is characteristic of the car. BULL. Zone was a farce, "nothing we can do." Wondering how wide spread it might be.Thanks
I finally found some time to drop the hunk -o- junk off at a dealer. Who has now had it for three days. First thing they thought was screwed up was the powertrain control module..... WRONG. They got one in and replaced it and it didn't fix it. This of course now has them baffled and they have been looking into my fifth cylinder (apparently it is misfiring) for the last two days. Still no official word on what's wrong. At least these guys are pleasant.... and they've provided me with a rent-a-car.
Still waiting for the official word on this thing. Will let you all know when it comes down.
I am considering a JGC, but after reading this I don't know. I am looking to replace my wife's 4x2 Explorer. Are the problems limited to 4x4's or does the 4x2 have a similar record.
JGC's problems are not limited to just 2wd models. My 1999 Laredo 6cyl 2wd has had 2 fuel pumps, 6 power window motors, 3 sets of brake rotors, and a front wheel bearing and hub replaced in 24000 miles. On a recent trip out of town I noticed a vibration on acceleration then a whining sound coming from the rearend. Guess what rearend bad. All this along with a stalling problem and rough idle my dealer couldn't find. My advice would be to look back through this message board and you will see the hundreds of people that have had the same problems as I have had, some worse. I have been trying to trade this Jeep at local dealers recently. The response I get from all is reluctantcy to trade for this thing. Seems the problems these things have had has managed to plummet the value of my JGC by 11000.00 in 18 months. I have had two used car managers tell me they didn't want to pass the hassle of these problematic vehicles on to their customers.
I would seriously do a lot of research before buying a JGC. I personally recommend against it. This is based on my experiences, those of my friends, and the hundreds of postings on sites like this. Also, pick up a Consumer Reports. Under reliability, they give it the worst rating. They go on to say the reliability is some of the worst they have seen. It doesn't do so hot on depreciation either.
The big issue to me is that the problems that plague the 99 JGC's are the same problems that haunt the 01's. It appears Jeep has done nothing to fix the transmission, window, fuel pump, brake, etc. problems before they leave the line. Instead, your wife may very well be in the service shop quite often having band-aids applied to the problems.
You may find yourself in this situation: For the first 36K miles you experience numerous problems. These are covered by the warranty. However, you are afraid of keeping the car past the warranty because these same problems will reappear along with new ones. This will cost you a good bit of money. So, you decide to unload it. However, noone, not even Jeep will give you anything worht your while for the vehicle (you could sell it privately, but I couldn't live with myself). So, you sell it for less than you owe and find yourself in a real bind when you actually shop for SUV's with quality (4-Runners, Pathfinders, etc.).
I wouldn't buy another JGC. If I did, I would negotiate the price as low as you can imagine, then say I'll take it if you throw in a very extended warranty.
Yesterday, my brother composed a message and asked for the message to be posted, and it never got posted. Today I composed the same message and asked for it to be posted, and after an hour ,it is not posted. In both instances, we had logged in. Both messages related to a rumble noise in a 1998 JGC. Can someone in edmunds help? We asked for help yesterday and so far have no assistance.
i'm a happy owner of a silverstone '01 jgcl and have not personally experienced any of the problems mentioned on this board. i bought my jeep new on 1/5 and have put almost 6k flawless miles on it. it's not a perfect suv-- mpg is just so-so and the cargo area is kinda small, but i love the v8 power, comfortable seats, nice stereo, look and finish.
i found this site while doing some research on a new suv and i've come back frequently to find possible customizing ideas and offer my pov when i felt i could add something helpful. when you accept that a majority of the people who post here do so to vent frustrations on whatever and often resort to hyperbole, it puts things in better perspective. i can't speak for other jgc owners or on other suv's but for me, i've been very pleased with my new jeep. take this post under advisement as you should all the others but there isn't anything better that 1st hand experience. go for plenty of test drives and decide for yourself what's best for you.
OK. I have to tell you that I am a Happy JGC owner. I had a 98 and had a great 45,000 miles. Never spent an unscheduled day in the shop. I did have the rotors replaced under recall at no charge at 36,000 miles. I had the rears turned at 40,000. Other than that not one thing went wrong. So, I waited 3 years and purchased an 01 JGC. No problems so far-I noticed a rattle during test drive--5 star dealer found a defective catalytic converter-replaced on delivery--no problems. So far it is 4,000 trouble free miles. One tip- I think the six-cylinder is much more reliable than the eight-my mechanic agrees.
Hi Folks, I've posted here before and just wanted to let new people know there are many good jeeps out there. I've had my '99 JGC Limited, QD, 4x4, Platinum/Agate, for 29 months and 28,500 miles. Early on I had the drive-train replaced under warranty and the front rotors turned at 18,000 miles. Every thing else has been just regular maintenance. My tires are wearing perfectly; it's hard to believe they almost 30K on them because they are showing little wear. Other than the early warranty items, this truck has been a great vehicle to drive and own. The V8 power and handling just doesn't compare to other SUV's. This week, in my city, I've only seen two '99 GC's for sale and they were asking about 26K to 27K from private owners. These two vehicle had just over 30K miles. That seems like a pretty decent price if they get it.
Also, I've owned many vehicle's in my 26 yrs. of driving (age 42)and almost every car I had eventually had some issue whether is was an American car or foreign.

I think it is good to hear the other side too (the fact that there are good Jeeps out there). Of course, anyone reviewing this site should take into account the fact that, for many of us, this is place to vent and to uncover solutions to problems that the mechanics can't seem to find.
However, for those that think the problems are in the minority, look at sources such as Consumer Reports that evaluate thousands of vehicles. They give the Jeep the worst reliability rating possible. Look at the SUV reliability comparison chart and you will see JGC at the bottom with the graph bar broken because it is literally off the chart. That chart is based on number of problems per 100 vehicles - not on what a few people on edmunds day. They give it a poor depreciation rating as well. Furthermore, I hardly consider replacing the drive-train an insignificant problem. We'll see how insignificant it is after the warranty.
MY single opinion is, if you want a very reliable SUV that looks pretty good, performs well, and that will keep it's value, the 4-Runner is a great option.
If you are less concerned with the possibility having to replace major components and with depreciation, and style and/or power are your most important attributes, the Jeep wins hands down (the Pathfinder has it it beat on power). Trust me, as I shop for a replacement (buying a 4-Runner), it is depressing to give up some of the style and features provided by the JGC. Don't get me wrong, I'm jealous of those of you who got the good ones, because there is no better looking SUV with such great features in its class.
I'm on my fourth Jeep, two Cherokees, two Grand Cherokees. All have been good vehicles in general, but the current one developed some trouble in the last month. New rotors, but I should be glad I got 36K out of them judging from the trouble some have had. Now it has a cracked exhaust header. I'm told this is not uncommon for the I6, but I don't recall this being a major complaint here in this forum. My dilemma is I need/want a V8 because now I tow a bigger trailer. I've looked at other V8 SUVs and the only one I really like is the Toyota Sequoia. But it's too big and I'm afraid the Earth Liberation Front will blow it up. (Kidding of course, but recently an eco-terrorist group was alleged to be responsible for the torching of a whole car lot full of SUVs in a city near here.)
The Jeep has just the right combination of size, power, and comfort for me. Call me irresponsible, but the Jeep stays on my list of possibilities for 2002. If I do buy one and live to regret it, I'll be right here letting you know.
Just finished reading the msgs here. Makes you worry about buying any type of vehicle! I'll throw my two cents worth in. We bought our first SUV - a 1987 Pathfinder. My wife immediately fell in love with the SUV concept. We put 87,000 on it, but yes we had some problems. The automatic locking hubs on the front never did not work right and always had problems. By the time we traded they would not stay engaged and were starting to make a grinding noise all the time. We traded for a 1992 Pathfinder. The wife loved the fact that they had added more creature comfort to the new Pathfinders. The originals were basically a "4X4 truck with enclosed seats in the back". The '92's were much nicer and had 4 doors! We had several problems with the '92, a lot of the things I'm reading about here - brake rotors, excessive tire wear with a strong pull to the right, and guess what - front hub problems. We lived with these through our ownership of the vehicle, 73,000 miles. We made the repairs as needed and although we never could get the pull fixed, we put some money into it. When we decided to trade again in '96, we drove all the SUV's on the market. My wife fell in love when she drove the JGC. After all those years of driving a "truck like" Pathfinder, here was a vehicle that had a carlike feel to it and was plush. The choice was made and we purchased the JGC. It now has 91,000 on it and we have done nothing other than oil changes, brake pads (at 71,000) and just put the 3rd set of tires on it.
We recently decided to give this to our 16 yo for her first car and buy the wife a new vehicle. She insisted on a new JGC and would have nothing else. We now have a '01 JGC with S package and the I6 ('96 is a I6 also), it does have the Up Country suspension and a towing package that gives it the 3.73 rear end. So far with 1,000 there are no signs of any problems.
I have to admit this board scares me a lot! I did purchase from 5 star dealer, but he is 60 mi away. It will be a big hassle to return there for service. Local dealer is a joke, wouldn't send my worst enemy there.
The '96 is great! Much more reliable and enjoyable than the 2 Pathfinders that proceeded it. Are we just lucky with it - yes I guess so. Hope the odds hold with us on the '01. (two bad Pathfinders, maybe we're due with 2 good JGC's). Anyway glad to see all the info here in case we need to go to arbratration, and to give a heads up on what to watch for.
Even if I had read this before we bought, I wouldn't have had a choice, wife demanded a JGC, even offered a Lexus - BUT NOOOO!!! Had to have the JEEP! Better to put up with a few problems in a car VS an unhappy wife!
It's nice to see good and bad experiences related in this forum. I have experienced the good and bad side of Jeep GC ownership.I have just replaced a 98 GC Ltd and must say that I was real impressed with the tire wear. At 51,000 miles it still had the original Goodyear Wranglers. That is the extent of my good experiences with that vehicle. In the same 51,000 miles, I replaced the rear axle, intake manifold, transfer case seal, and front brake rotors twice. I have owned a number of cars that I drove for more than 200,000 miles and never had to replace an axle before. I do appriciate these forums and wish I had researched that puchase more. These forums are great and have been useful in finding a replacement for the JGC. I just picked up the 01 Toyota Landcruiser and love it so far. I gotta admit that the Jeep would out accelerate the TLC and I miss the dual presets for seats, mirrors, and radio stations. Can't believe that is not available on the LC.
I totally agree with you mhdavis1. My wife also insisted on JGC. I offered her a pathfinder, 4runner, but nooo she had to have her JGC. So last year I surprised her with new 2000 JGC limited v8, qd, up country and all the other great stuff. Although the JGC is in the shop every month for one thing or another, sometimes twice a month, it is THE most powerful and luxuries suv on the market. I just finished test driving a Landcruiser, LX 470, QX4, and GMC Denali and none of them have the power, the remote memory features, dual climate control, or even as simple as comfortably placed audio control on the steering wheel. The Jeep got that part right. So I think I'll be taking out an extended warranty sometimes before the end of 36,000 and keep bringing it to the shop because this truck is the best in regards to its power and off-road capabilities. I have taking it off road on begginers to moderate off road trails and this truck is wonderful.
Recently purchased a 89' Cherokee. Now starting to overheat. I have flushed the radiator and changed the thermostat. Had three mechanics look at it, none able to pin-point the problem. All three offered different solutions. Replace fan clutch, replace radiator, etc. Fan clutch, water pump, and drivebelt seems to be working fine. Tested for blown head gasket, also fine. Maybe, it could be the heater coil, if so how do I check it. Any input would be greatly appreciated.
Not too sure why you posted here rather than in the Jeep Cherokee Topic Consolidation, but at any rate...
Does it have the original [closed system] radiator? Pre 91 XJs came with a crappy radiator system that was prone to overheating. The solution is to replace it with an aftermarket 2 or 3 core open system one (one where you add fluid directly to the radiator, and the overfill bottle is not pressurized). Bleeding all the air out of the old style is difficult.
Has anyone remedied their rotor problems by installing rotors/brake components different from the factory equipment? How long since the new equipment was installed? What equipment did you use?
Does anyone with the shift clunk have a remedy? We have had our transmission flashed many times. The clunk returns. One of the service managers at the dealership where we had the most recent work done asked me if we were driving the Jeep differently or if one person drove the vehicle most of the time. At this time, I drive the Jeep most. My driving style around town is quite different from my husband's. The manager explained that after the computer is flashed/programmed it learns your driving style. With differences in driving styles the clunk could reappear; the clunk will happen when a person who does not drive the vehicle most of the time drives. It does happen most often when my husband drives. ????So, is there a rememdy to the hard downshift (clunk) problem?????
We bought our JGCL,V8,Quad in 9/99 and have had many repairs. i am trying to get all of the paper work together to make a comprehensive list of the problems with a list of the repairs done, including TSB#'s when possible, not to complain but in the hope that it will help some of you to get your repairs done. i'll try to get the info posted soon. We know what the problems are. Now, solutions are what we need. What repairs have been successful in fixing the whine, clunk, windows, rotors...?
In the current issue of Consumer Reports, the reliability ratings for the JGC are poor for prior years but get very respectible for the current model. In fact, it appears to be better than many other brands. Is it possible that the complaints on this board are not representative of the universe of JGC buyers and that Consumers Reports has a better sampling of the universe? In any event, there seems to be a pattern of improvement
Read the details! Jeep ranked dead last as far as reliability goes! They even forecast what the future may hold, and it looks worse. The report states that reliability is among the worst they have seen. Pretty bold words in my opinion. Personally, I can't wait until my lease is over (7 months and counting). There's nothing like coming outside every morning (at 6am) and wondering whether my '99 JGC will start or not. I've had the fuel replaced 5 times already! Happens every 5 months-approx. Talk about reliability! What good is a nice looking SUB if it doesn't start? I think about it every damn morning! Bottom line folks is do your own DD...Due Diligence! Kind of like with stocks! Do your research! Buyer Beware! For you folks who have had pleasant experiences with the JGC.JGC... knockwood, I hope you didn't speak to soon! Next time...Toyota, Nissan, or maybe even the Acura MDAura DX
With almost 9,000 miles on my '01 JGC, V8 with Quadra Drive, I finally found something I can commiserate about. The rear license plate retaining bolts are rusting. That's not what I would call 5-star service from my dealer. I wonder if I qualify already for the Lemon Law??? If I don't, I won't despair, because everything else is still working!
Let us try another subject (and maybe discourage trolling from people who have never owned a JGC and aren't even thinking about buying one).
Has anyone installed an after-market exhaust system on the JGC I6? What brand did you install and how much power did you gain? How loud is it, that is, can you sit in the front seat and carry on a conversation with someone in the back seat?
I recently sold my 93 JGC Laredo (very reliable). Dealer would give $4500 & Edmund's suggested $8900. I was happy to split the difference. Incidentally, Grand Cherokee was 1st produced in 1993 and redesigned in 1999. My only bad experience in 7 years was when the water pump failed in a parking garage in 1996. My new JGC Ltd delivered on Halloween 2000 now has 6400 miles. Early problems and how they were repaired: 1)Security system inoperable (dealer repaired-wires were switched) 2)Driver's door would lock on its own when engine was on & outside temp under 32 degrees (i.e.warming up vehicle on a cold winter day). This problem was linked to the driver's door handle which DC redesigned. The part became available in late February and was promptly replaced. 3)Power side-view mirrors and driver's seat will occasionally move to undesirable settings. This is an ongoing electrical problem. 4)A subtle but distinctive pulse (possibly in the transmission) occasionally happens when travelling 50 to 60 mph. The service rep says this is probably caused by the AC compressor kicking in. The problem is more of an annoyance than anything else. However, little problems can grow. I can live with small repairable problems because I really like my Jeep! Great looks. Great ride. I also got the bug shield, running boards, and mud flaps for all four wheels. These items are covered under manufacturer warranty if dealer puts on before original delivery. Dealer won't give price break for the extras, though.
I have a 1998 Grand Cherokee Special Edition Package making a cluking/thumping sound. Has any one else experience this problem? If yes, what was the fix? Even if you don't have a fix, yet your experiencing the same problem email me.
I'm tired of being told that this is normal or we can't duplicate the problem. I'm no rocket scientist, but this doesn't sound normal.
Also, my transmission goes 'clunk' when shifting to reverse.
I just had the rear end replaced to due to a whining/whirling sound coming from the rear. Not to mention, I had brake work done, ABS light came on, etc.
Please email any information to FIVEN3QTRS@AOL.COM In the Subject line please put: 1998 Jeep Information.

Thanks for letting me vent
Good luck with what ever decision you make.
George
Transfer case under the seat and maybe limited slip control in the glove box?
Any ideas?
From reading other posts, I realize previous model year Jeeps had many problems. I think Jeep has done a terrific job addressing old problems in the new vehicles.
So you enjoy your Maxima and I will enjoy my Jeep.
still smiling...

However, My brother's '99 GCL with V8 and QD is a totally different story, the whining is unbearable and he had replaced the rotors 3 or 4 times within 50000 km.
George -
I always wanted the jeep because of the V8 power.
Good Luck
The 2001 Pathfinder will not compare to the Jeep's V8 power, not much will. But nothing will even come close to the dismal reliability records of the Jeep Grand Cherokee. I have to agree with you about the interior layout and exterior styling of the JGC, but all these features have little meaning if your Jeep is sitting in your 5 Star dealership's repair shop.
George
I've returned it to the dealer three times for repairs, but the mechanics find nothing wrong with it. I am quickly approaching double figures in the number of times I've had to call Daimler/Chrysler Roadside Assistance, including two calls within two hours. Does anyone besides me have this problem? Thank you for passing on your ideas and experiences!
I am thinking of installing a set of after market rotors., like :

"GCL" and "Barney" , respectively. Sorry folks.
does anybody else have this problem? has anyone had this resolved?
If I did, I would negotiate the price as low as you can imagine, then say I'll take it if you throw in a very extended warranty.
i found this site while doing some research on a new suv and i've come back frequently to find possible customizing ideas and offer my pov when i felt i could add something helpful. when you accept that a majority of the people who post here do so to vent frustrations on whatever and often resort to hyperbole, it puts things in better perspective. i can't speak for other jgc owners or on other suv's but for me, i've been very pleased with my new jeep. take this post under advisement as you should all the others but there isn't anything better that 1st hand experience. go for plenty of test drives and decide for yourself what's best for you.
good luck!
Also, I've owned many vehicle's in my 26 yrs. of driving (age 42)and almost every car I had eventually had some issue whether is was an American car or foreign.
Mark
The Jeep has just the right combination of size, power, and comfort for me. Call me irresponsible, but the Jeep stays on my list of possibilities for 2002. If I do buy one and live to regret it, I'll be right here letting you know.
Keep the info comming

I agree the vehicle looks nice (almost bought one) but it doesn't do you much good if it's in the repair shop or you are in the hospital.
As someone said previously, do your own due diligience.
