I hit the road at 5:00AM with my daughter (she watches me on here and wanted to meet everyone). Made it through Delaware when a nasty stomach virus hit. My car reeked and she was soooo sick. I decided it was best to turn around (or gross everyone out). Daughter is finally in bed, my car is cleaned up and I'm so sorry I didn't get to meet everyone. I had some goodies. I'd like to send them to everyone who attended. Any way someone can send me a list with addresses?

Sorry folks. As much as I love my job, and this forum, I gotta be a Mom first. Let me know?
  • miksmimiksmi Member Posts: 1,246
Patti, you did the right thing. Family is definitely first. We should do something in NJ, PA, or DE some time (closer to you). Hope she's well enough for school today. ..Mike

She was up all night, so she gets a day off from school. Once again, I'm sorry. If the group gets together at SIA, I'll be flying down, solo, so I shouldn't run into a problem.
  • paisanpaisan Member Posts: 21,181
Perhaps a bunch from NY/NJ/PA/DE/MD can caravan out there (although some of us are speedier than others :) )

Patti, perhaps we should start with asking you what the proceedure would be to get a group tour etc.

Sorry to hear about your child, but as Mike said, you did the right thing.

We missed you. I was hoping to finally meet you. We had a great time (don't mean to rub it in)! Some great folks, food, wine, roads, vistas, and, of course -- cars!

No problem, Patti, we'll catch you at the next event.

Garry Grimes has a list of attendess, there were 10 vehicles and about 20 people. His web site is http://www.subaruclub.com/. And a thanks to Garry for going through all the trouble of organizing the event.

As for freebies, we were loaded. Once again, our beloved Darlene of QSubaru hooked us up. I handed out Subaru logo sunglasses, very cool I must say, plus silver plated Subaru key chains to all the drivers.

Car highlights: I sat in an SVX for the first time, very cool. An RS with a carbon fiber adjustable wing and heavy mods wasn't hard to look at, and it's going turbo pretty soon too. Nice to see a pair of new Forester S+ models, driven by Bob and Dale.

Event highlights: nice folliage, though maybe a week past peak. Wine was great, love the Countryside Red and White at Oakencroft Vineyards.

Loosh - white had strong texture, a light peach aroma, full body, yet managed to be episcopalian in its behavior. In other words, it was YUMMY! The wife got a bit tipsy!

Lunch was pretty good, and our subgroup hike after lunch was fun. The drive up 81 didn't quite pan out, though Mike led with vigor and hit 80 on occasion. My compliments to a very easy-to-follow driver.

Well, at least Patti made it on the road! After getting clearance from the tower to fly solo, I was sidelined by a stomach bug. Didn't even want to think about spending the day in a car, if you know what I mean. Sorry I missed the event -- I was looking forward to meeting everyone. Maybe next time.

Juice- Comparing wines to Episcopalians? LOL. Now that's got to be a first!

Sorry I missed the tour. Although I did get to witness a "world" record in the "Sheaf Toss" at the Stone Mountain Scottish Highland Games on Saturday and then went for a day hike in the N GA mountains on Sunday.

OK .. I'm pissed ! I did't get to go to the F.F. tour. I didn't get no damn sunglasses! No stinken' silver plated keychain. I didn't get to race Patti in SOA's H-6, nor "Sling my ride into turn 10" (loosh).

But ... I had a wonderful day walking on the North Central R.R. trail with my mother-in-law. Sheesh. Somebody Kill ME !!!!!!!

I didn't realize that was a two-day class, awesome! I love going to the track in a wagon, everyone is amazed one would try such a feat. Bummer about the M3. I agree with you about probing the limits of the car; that's what I relish about taking a stock car to the track. If I ever master track driving, I'm sure I'll change my tune, but for now it sure is fun learning my and the car's limits, safely, in an unmodified vehicle. Thanks for the post, buddy!

    Aaaaww, Poor hutch!! :)

FWIW hutch, I missed FF too. I don't feel as bad about it, though. ;)

    ahh .. poor Hutch.

Should have brought your mother-in-law to Charlottesville. She (and you) would have had a great time.

Someone remind me, who's this guy Hutch?

    ;)

Oh that wasn't smart, not if I want to be invited on any off-road adventures organized by the Hutchinator! Ok, how's this:

Poor, poor Hutch. You are a selfless soul. We missed you but if you had made it there would have been too many Foresters there. ;) But you also did the right thing; family first. Besides, we know you really enjoyed your m-i-l's company and it was a beautiful day to be outside.

    Cheers,

Lucien: Very cool, another Subaru wagon heads to the track. You guys are inspiring!

Everyone used to tease me about my front-wheel drive Prelude until I smoked them at the track! Got to teach those Bimmer punks a lesson ....

So true about the M3 -- great car with extreme limits that newbies probably should NOT probe. It does offer a certain level of forgiveness at the limit, but that limit is way the heck up there. Doesn't leave much room for error.

Your comments about the brakes were interesting.

Mike: did you notice similar braking performance at the track, or is the GT better equipped in the stopping department?

    Craig
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
Awe, poor Hutch. That enough? ;)

106mph sounds like a hoot. Bake those brake pads, too! My guess is the 2000 GT has more swept area. Or Mike was a bit freaked out to push his, uh, wife's car as hard as Loosh did. Plus he only had one day, not two.

Up on 3 wheels and all, eh? Yes, please send the photos. Though I don't know what's going on with Homepage.com - all my pages are down, and their main site doesn't have the link to register or login any more? Any insight?

BMW Roadside Assistance? LOL! Can you IMAGINE the operator on the other side? "Let me get this straight, you rolled over three times and...."

Lucien: your front wheels covered in brake dust or what?

    -juice

PS How'd you, the wine guru, like my wine review?
  • miksmimiksmi Member Posts: 1,246
Craig, I didn't notice any brake fade, though that was my biggest concern. It seems on every other lap I was lollygagging behind a few slow pokes on the turn 4 to turn 5 transition, so my brakes might have had enough time to cool down (and I did some seriously late braking for turn 5, per my instructor). Yes, a (very) few were even slower than I. (I'm not saying I'm any good, just that all skill levels and cars are on the track.) I wasn't pushing the car as I didn't know my or the car's limits; I just wanted to learn and bring back the car unscathed (and except for, as one person put it, 10,000 miles of brake dust on the alloys, I did). I don't know how fast I was going on the straight but I hit the rev limiter in 4th and had to up shift to 5th.. something over 100 mph at times. I usually kept it around 90 on the straight to let more capable drivers pass.

Per MY00 brochures, the Outback, Legacy L & GT all have: Front: 10.7-inch ventilated discs with twin-piston calipers + Rear: 11.3-inch discs. Regarding Loot's MY99 Outback vs. my wife's MY00 GT wagon brakes, I don't know if the discs are larger. They might be, as the weight increased 99->00. MY00 GT wagon 5MT = 3,440 lb, MY00 Outback wagon 5MT = 3,415 lb. Loosh or juice, got the 99 specs handy?

  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
    Rev limiter in 4th? Cool!

I may have a brochure at home. Here I have the 2000 and 2001s (which have 11.4" front discs for 2001).

One other factor - Mike's wheels have plenty of holes to allow air to cool the brakes, which may have helped. They're also 16"ers.

That was great, Juice. THAT's where your nickname comes from! Good, so you don't mind swapping jobs now, right?! :)

Talked to Rallispec today. THe mods I am considering on an Impreza wagon would run $3500-$4500, including labor. So I basically need to browbeat a dealer into selling me one for $14K and I will stay on budget. On the other hand, that is a trip to Europe.....
  • lucien2lucien2 Member Posts: 2,984
Cool, sounds like you pushed the car more than you let on!

I do thing the GT wheels let the brakes vent better.

Re: <330</A>> "Regarding Loot's" .. should have been "Loosh's" .. good grief, that's what I get for running it through a spell checker too quickly. Apologies, bud.

Pushing the envelope: Well, I guess everything is relative. After going 92mph on the 80 degree drop of 330Millennium ForceClubs (hehe, think I like that coaster?), everything seems slow to me. ;)

You're right, I-81 at night in truck traffic is fast! Plus you had your sunroof open, so that might have amplified the effect. Glad I wasn't too hard to follow. Yes, FRS radios rule! Oops, until hoi polloi buys them after reading this testimonial and clogs the few channels ;)

If you see a problem user/post, the best thing you can do is to send an email to the conference host; the problem will be taken care of as soon as possible.

In the meantime: please do not respond, or make
comments, about the problem user/post. It will only create more disruption to the topic. Please ignore as though it does not exist and continue with your discussion....

And now for the benefit of those that came here to discuss Subaru events, let's continue with this subject. Thanks for your participation.

Those of you with Speedvision may want to check out the SCCA Pro Wild West/Prescott Forest rally at 5pm Pacific and again at 9pm Pacific. There will be several Subaru Imprezas and one WRX running in the rally, among others (like a turbocharge Toyota Supra!).

At 7 and 11pm Pacific, the Speedvision Touring car championship at Road Atlanta will air. I highly recommend catching this programme, especially for those of you who have been track junkies lately :-) Watch out for the two silver E46 BMW 328i's.

In addition, the Speedvision GT and Touring car championships at Laguna Seca will be airing back-to-back on Saturday starting at 5pm and ending at 7pm. Watch for the two Audi S4s in the GT championships. It's always fun to watch the AWD cars leapfrog the BMW M3s and Porsche 996s at the standing start!

On Sunday at 11am Pacific, we'll start off with MotorVision (another highly recommended show) which covers many European vehicles that we don't get in North America. Next is Motor Trend TV (possibly coverage of the x of the year awards), and then live coverage of the American LeMans series starting at 12pm and ending around 3pm.

    Enjoy!! I know I will be :-)

I just got back from Sweden where there are, I swear, more wagons than sedans/coupes combined. A LOT of wagons. That means lots of hot-looking wagons, fat tires and all that whatnot. If there were a track day at Summit Point Sweden, I'd wager that up to half the cars would be wagons.

    Cheers,
    WDB
  • kate5000kate5000 Member Posts: 1,271
I was on a business trip in Sweden back in 1995 and also notice a lot of wagons. Swedes are practical people, so they know a value of wagon over sedan, I guess.

I also noticed that almost all taxis are either Volvo or Mercedes, both quite well-equipped. Did you know that Swedish taxi drivers do not expect tips? and you can pay by credit card...

If it was not too cold and too socialist for my taste, I would have moved to Sweden...

BTW, Volvos in Sweden are more expensive than here in US, at least used to be.
  • miksmimiksmi Member Posts: 1,246
Drew, thanks for the heads up but I am Comcast-enabled and Speedvision-disabled. YAR (yet another reason) to become satellite-enabled.

    ..Mike

    ..Mike

  • francophilefrancophile Member Posts: 667
Yes I did notice that. I didn't use any taxis, trains and subways and busses and friends sufficed, but I did notice that the taxis were pretty deluxe. Leather, alloys, light bars festooned with monster lights. For a guy like me who likes the sporty look, Stockholm (and Europe in general) is such fun!

Oddly I didn't see that many Subarus in Stockholm. It could be that AWD carries a fuel economy penalty, and that means a lot more in a land with $5/gal gas than it does here. Or maybe Subies haven't penetrated that market yet. Or maybe if I had gotten out into the countryside, or further north where it snows more, I would have seen more. Whatever, there weren't many in Stockholm.

The socialism in Sweden is pretty tolerable as such things go. I'd have trouble with how low in the sky the sun is in winter, but otherwise I could live there too. It's beautiful.

    Cheers,
    WDB
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
No tips, pay by credit card? Sounds good. But I wonder what those taxi fares are like...they gotta pay off those Benzes!

Mike: don't feel too jealous. My dad has satellite, and he has more receivers, adapters, dishes, and remotes than you can shake a stick at, plus $80 monthly bills.

OK, he gets a LOT of channels, but still...

    -juice
  • kate5000kate5000 Member Posts: 1,271
I recall they were quite reasonable. Actually, getting from my hotel to the office was only 2 times as much money-wise by taxi than by bus-train-bus, but several times faster.

I guess taxis are subsidized over there. Everything in Sweden is either heavily taxed or subsidized, or may be both... ;-)

today (Monday) on Speedvision at 12pm to 1 pm Pacific. This includes coverage of the Ojibwe Forests ProRally and a re-run of the Wild West/Prescott Forest Rally.

For those of you who missed the American LeMans series, it will be re-running again today on Speedvision at 5pm to 8pm Pacific, and again at 9pm to 12pm Pacific. I managed to catch it on the weekend and highly recommend watching at least the last 1 or 1.5 hours of the event. Lots of action!

The Speedvision GT and Touring car championships at Laguna Seca will re-run on Thursday November 2nd, at 9 am to 11 am Pacific. Again, lots of action!

For those of you in Canada, the Canadian Rally Championship will air on Saturday November 4th on TSN. Coverage of the "Rallye of the Voyageurs" at 1 am Pacific, and "Rallye Auto Charlevoix" at 10 am Pacific.

On Monday November 6th, get ready for the FIA World Rally Championship in San Remo. Coverage on Speedvision (1/2 programme) at 5:30 pm and again at 9:30 pm Pacific. If you miss it on Monday, it will re-run on Saturday November 11th at 11:30am.

    That's all for now! :-)

What's the dealio? Are we gonna get this going? Maybe Patti could shed some light on the proceedure etc. for getting a group tour setup.

This show has in the past started the day after Christmas. I'm assuming the same holds true for this year. Unfortunately, it looks like I'm going to miss it. It'll be the first time in about ten years. We're going to be in Florida for the holidays (counting votes!). So... it will be up to Juice, Mike Smith, etc., to keep us up to date.

The DC show has never been an important show, in terms of model introductions. It's really the last of the past year's shows, rather then the first of the upcoming shows. Having said that, here's what I expect to see:

The new 2002 Explorer and Mountaineer.

Ford has in the past been good to the DC show in that they have unveiled several "about-to-debut" models. I expect that to continue. The new Explorers/Mountaineers have sort of debuted - in the press - but not for the general public. The vehicle is supposed to be in showrooms shortly after the first of the year, so it would make sense for it to show up here first - especially after all the tire problems. If it does show up, I'd be interested as to what tire brand it's wearing.

    Subaru

You can certainly expect the LL Bean and VDC. Don't expect the new Impreza. That will debut in Detroit a few weeks hence. However, Subaru could(?) tease us with a display of their new rally-racer that's based upon the the new Impreza! Remember last year they had a racing Impreza on display. Hmmm... that sure would be worth the price of admission!

Other than that I don't expect much. Most of last year's concept vehicles will be on display. You may(?) see a production version of Chevy's Avalanche, since that will go on sale this spring.

    Bob
  • rshollandrsholland Member Posts: 19,788
Subaru might show(?) the ST-X pickup at the DC
Auto Show - also worth the price of admission.

In fact, I think that would be more likely to show up than the new Impreza racer.

Garry: I'm there! Any weekend is fine.

paisan: yellowbikedon has done some preliminary home work on that, just so there's no duplication of effort. To be honest, I'm not 100% sure I can go, because I may have used up all my leave.

Have the Isuzu topics started up yet? That could be the first event for the group.

Bob: I'm bumming 'cause I'll miss the DC show too! Last year I even nabbed some free passes for me and Mike Smith (which, incidentally, was the first time we met in person).

I'll be in Brazil, on a beach somewhere, so I won't be too broken hearted! ;) That's also where I'll be burning all my leave! :-O

The 2000 Neon had its debut in DC. Isn't that funny? They had the Detriot Show for the "official" debut, but I vividly recall seeing it weeks earlier in DC. (Big deal, I know...)

They'll have the ST-X and the LL Bean or VDC. I would most definitely had gone.

Anyone in the DC area that wants to go let me know - I may be able to score some free passes again.

    -juice
  • paisanpaisan Member Posts: 21,181
Bonnie is too busy/too scared to setup anything before they change over the software to the new message system. So we are in limbo right now, but the guys over on the Isuzu topics would definitely be interested. Well you could drive out friday night and back on sunday! :)

  • francophilefrancophile Member Posts: 667
Juice, Mikesmi, anyone else planning on going to DC or able to score free tickets(!), please contact me if you are going. I may try to make the drive down.

Also, if anyone is interested in attending the Philadelphia Auto Show please let me know. I don't even know when it is yet but I can check into it if anyone is interested.

Finally, I'm a definite maybe for the SOA tour . I'd love to go but need more information - especially on how long a trip it will be total - before I can commit.

Mike: you're a wild man! How many hours from DC to Lafayette for a midnight Banzai run?

Oops, I forgot I have a wife and kids... ;)

That happens a lot with car events! Just ask my wife!

Fair enough, then. I'll go ahead and try to secure some free passes, and once I do I'll offer them up to the Crew.

It's only 9.2hrs there if you average 70mph! Not too shabby a drive. It'll be like a zip around the block. I drive way too much (did another 800 miles this past weekend to upstate NY)
