Yum-yum. I got to help my sister-in-law make the latkas last year. Wonderful when hot with apple sauce. Oops, add 7 pounds for that thought.

FYI. went back to the dealers and had a good hard look at the new front console, unfortunately on closer inspection the new cup holders are not interchangable with the MY.2001.

They had to redesign the whole console to accomodate the new cupholder panel so I would have to change the complete console, while it would be a nice mod it is too expensive.

Had it just been a matter of changing the cupholder panel I would have done that.

    Cheers Pat.

    G'day

Amusing aside here. Judy tried asking the same question on a cooking list she subscribes to. The responses on Edmunds have been far more varied and mouth watering. We are road testing some when she gets back on her feet (been ill for the past week)

    Thanks

I'll check for you today. If memory serves me, I think dealer's had to install them because of the need to cut into the bumper, but at my age, my memory does not always serve me that well. I'll post when I get an answer.

    Thanks!

Not only is NHTSA asking folks to contact them with feedback on HID's, they want to investigate fog lights too. They state that they are getting a lot of complaints about the HID's (I think I mentioned before that this is why Subaru is not jumping at putting them in our cars), but between fog lights and the lights on the monster SUV's are bothering other drivers.

I'm sure NHTSA will listen to both sides, so, feel free to go to their site and comment if you feel strongly. I know most of you want the HID's so this may be your chance.

    Thanks!

and these are gonna be the same people who whine to the NHTSA about how cars don't have enough light on the road, and that is why they ran that kid over on his bike.

I've got a co-worker who wants to buy a PT Cruiser (to each his own) so I was showing him Edmunds site. I was amazed to discover that Edmunds has calculated the TMV as $1500 OVER MSRP! I find that amazing for a vehicle that's been in production for over a year now.

Well you know, the herd likes em for some reason, so dealers keep marking em up.

  • FrankMcFrankMc Member Posts: 228
but I agree with paisan that I find the publics fascination with the PT Cruiser a little odd (although I have a 24 year old niece that loves them, so it must be fashionable!)

It's the same phenomenon as the Exploder. There was zero, count em zero, good things about the explorer, it was small, poor repair ratings, leaf springs, low tow capcity, expensive, etc. etc. Yet they sold like hotcakes. Americans latch onto something and are like a herd of sheep, right into the slaughter mill.

Visually, I like it; kudos to Chrysler for having the chutzpah to bring it to market. But it's not for me: poor crash results, small interior, not AWD, no turbo ;)

No, the hot rod coupe look. My son spotted a black PT Cruiser limo with flames painted on the hood when in NYC earlier this year. Looked very impressive, even from the 15th floor.

Pat: thanks for checking. If it were easy I may have done the swap on my dad's car (a 2001 OBLtd).

Frank: ask you co-worker to say this out loud to himself: "I am paying 1500 over MSRP for a Neon-based minivan built in Mexico". Then see if he still gets it.

The spelling is hearse, but it looks more like a retro bread van. The look isn't the problem, though. It needs RWD and a V8 to back up the look. The SSR will offer those. Plus, the Mini will take over as the fashionable "it" car once it comes out.

In fairness to Ford, they are good at giving consumers what they want. The Jeep Cherokee was too small. The Blazer was a 2 door which they tacked on 2 more doors onto, and it looked, well, tacky.

The Explorer was roomy and had a good cargo area, and it was American and the only likable Big 3 SUV. Traditional truck buyers flocked to it, and it's been a cash cow ever since.

I'd prefer a v6 RWD SC or TC on the PT Crapper. Towing, hauling it would be great. In fact Ihear the next generation Intrepid will be RWD. I may just have to go back to american cars...

Co-Worker went to look at the PT Cruiser yesterday evening. He liked its looks but had to dismiss it as an option when he discovered that his golf clubs wouldn't fit in the back!

Ah, sheep. Follow... "Dodge Different" (if it weren't funny enough how cookie cutter Detroit offerings are already then the fact they borrowed Apple Computer's slogan makes it even funnier). Windoze. Champagne Gold Camrys. Lexus RX 300's. Exploders, Explosions and Explosives. 20" chrome rims on Honda Civics. "Survivor" "Boot Camp" "Tough Enough" "Murder in Small Town X" "Bugs Life" vs. "Antz" "Armegeddon" vs. "Deep Impact" Windoze XP vs. Mac OS X.

Thank heavens for Apple Computer and Subaru.

Frank: my Forester carries my golf clubs easily. In fact, I have one of those pull-along carriers and it fits inside even if I don't fold it and leave the golf bag attached (even without folding the seats)!

Didn't Nuprin use the "Different" tag line? Same old, same old.

The console swap is simple just expensive, too bad because I really like the relocated seat heater switch,s the cupholders are not bad either.

Quick question for all you smart folks: If you were going to buy a dealer loaner with 4400 miles on it, how much would you expect the price to be reduced as compensation?

    -Frank P.
  • locke2clocke2c Member Posts: 5,038
$1000-1500 below invoice, at least. Depends on the price of the car honestly. Are we talking an Impreza TS, Outback VDC or something in between?

    -Colin
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
A loaner is a used car. You lose 10% of the value the minute you drive off the lot, and another 10% per year or 10k miles after that. So that would mean a 15% off the regular sale price.

That's a general rule of thumb. Subies hold their value well, so it would be less. I would start there and then try to get at least 10% off.

WRXs sell above invoice, but I would not touch a turbo that was not allowed a proper break-in period. Any other model sells at invoice, so I would be looking for $1500-3000 off.

  • kenskens Member Posts: 5,869
I personally would not buy a loaner unless it was discounted a huge amount. Loaners are typically left over vehicles from the sales department. They tend to be the least popular trim or model. Also, chances are that the vehicle wasn't driven "gently" during it's break-in period.

If it were me, I'd start from 50% off or get a free extended warranty thrown in.

I bought a "program " car some years ago. Those are the ones SOA management people use around the factory and then SOA sell to dealers. This was back in 93, it was a 92 which if new should have been about 18K with all the options, I got it for 15K with 6000miles on it. May have been better looked after than a loaner. Patti said once they are very well maintained.I would suspect the dealer would keep theirs in good shape too. Break in may have been less than gentle esp for the OC types but unless it was horribly abused I really doubt it makes that much difference.

chat last night all. Hope it was fun. I'll make it next week.

  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
I guess the trick is to find out where it came from. If it was a dealer's test drive vehicle, avoid it like the plague. How many WRX test drivers do you think actually stayed below 4000rpm?

If it was a well-cared-for program car, treat it like any other used car. That means asking for service records and inspecting it closely.

The chat was great. We had a good dozen show up, and you really had to speed read to keep up at times.

It's coming to the States in 2003. Does anyone know what it's going to cost?
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
$29,995 plus freight, is my guess. You heard it here first.

    -juice
  • jimmyp1jimmyp1 Member Posts: 640
that puts the B4 at $34,999.00 plus freight, plus extras (not too many, hopefully) which is right where I had been guessing, 35-40k, IMHO. You heard it HERE first a month ago or so! :)

    Jim

Is the B4 Blitzen another step up again overseas? Ouch!!! 38-45k? Don't get me wrong, I still think it would be worth it.

    Thanks to:
Karen S - for the cooking directions in post #5095. I tried it this morning and they were great.

Graham - for starting the offbeat hashbrowns thread.

I can't believe I've put 36K miles on my Subie in only 23 months! I haven't taken that many long trips...

Auto-xed both Sat and Sun. Saturday @ Giant's Stadium in NJ. It was a NASA event. Very well run by http://www.nasanortheast.net/index.shtml got in 9 runs. I ran in F-class which was mostly made up of Neons, and MR2s. I took 2nd place and missed first by .05 sec to an MR2. Sunday in the rain raced @ nassau Colleseum in LI with SCCA NYR. This event was a train wreck, dis-organization, etc. There were only 2 G-stock cars, and I finished 2nd to a Type R Integra.

the rain probably was an additional challenge, eh? nothing the sube couldn't handle though!

seriously, how was racing in the rain? were times slower than normal? could you tell the awd was helping?

are the $100 coupons you get back made out to an individual or can they be used by anyone??? I'm thinking of making everyone in the office use it as the business card and I get to use the coupons!!! Is there a limit on how many coupons you can use for the purchase of a new car?
  • paisanpaisan Member Posts: 21,181
Yeah raced in the rain before, but on street tires. This time was with the slicks. I didn't lose it, the AWD kicked in nicely :) Today everyone went slower cause of the rain.

and I don't believe that you can put them together to get a free Subaru! . They advertise up to $2,000 off (4 years @ $500 a year). The program works well. I have been in the program since '97.

    Frank
  • kate5000kate5000 Member Posts: 1,271
Good thought, but the trick is you can only accumulate $500/yr. And only $2000 can be applied towards any single Subaru purchase. I wish they increased accumulation level. I'm already over the limit, and I had not had the card for a year yet.
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
My guess is we won't see an all-out twin-turbo Blitzen for $35k. I'm not sure SoA wants to tread in the $30k+ arena again.

So, I predict we'll see a Legacy GT replacement with a 2.5LPT (light pressure turbo). It'll have 200hp or so along with equipment levels similar to the GT Ltd. A sedan with a 5 speed costs $24,695 now, so I'd guess $25,995 for the new one. If the price is right that'll be wifey's next car.

Now, if that turns out to be a hit, then they may consider a Blitzen. If so, I bet they'd de-content it slightly to get the price in at $29,995.

If SoA comes out with a Blitzen under $30k instead of the 2.5LPT, I'll get one for me and the wife can drive Sandy! :-)

30k is a psycological barrier. You'll recall the Forester's price stayed under 20k for several years, just so they could say it "starts under 20k".

    So many posts.
No internet at work because our vendor is downtown (they say that's the reason). A power surge fried my home computer and the repair guy is backed up with Nimda probelms.
Looks like the only thing I missed is a bunch of hash brown recipes. :-) I'll share mine:
    Ore-Ida.

Going through my insurance company to repair my bumper from the stump-pulling incident in the Pine Barrens. I'm using a "preferred" body shop so I don't have to worry about estimates from different shops. Initial estimate is $625.

    Good to be back.

    Hello Folks,

I just found out that my insurance carrier provides a "Mechanical Breakdown" coverage, basically a B2B warranty for 7 years 100K miles. The charge to me is $3.40 a month. The rep said they will even replace the speakers or stock radio. If this is the case, then it is a lot cheaper than the extended warranty available at the dealer. Anyone hear of this or have this??? Any opinions? Thanks
  • kate5000kate5000 Member Posts: 1,271
I used to have this when I was with Geico, but when repairs were requested, there was a lot of fine print and hair-splitting involved. Even when repair was approved, they kept my car in the garage for weeks, trying to locate the cheapest parts available, and I had to drive an entry level rental car --brrr! I was not happy with that service. However, it was 9 years ago, maybe they have improved since then.
  • anibalbanibalb Member Posts: 193
    Hey Kate,

It is Geico. They are supposed to be the best priced insurance carrier I can find in Bay Area. Is this right? The rep told me that I can take car to dealer or wherever I choose. I had her send me the literature. Are there any other good insurance carriers that anyone thinks may be better in the Bay Area?
  • FrankMcFrankMc Member Posts: 228
I was just thinking, you can get a Subaru mastercard, and so can your husband. One of you can use the $2k off on your next Subaru, while the other can use his/her coupons for service/repairs/parts. This would bring your family savings to a potential $1k per year.(You would have to charge like crazy... but that isn't as hard as it sounds :-).

    Frank
  • kate5000kate5000 Member Posts: 1,271
I'd suggest to read all the fine print, really carefully. When I had that plan, they said they'd allow any service facility, including dealerships, but in reality they only allowed the cheapest independent mechanic and even then, as I said before, I had to wait a while until they located the cheapest source for the parts (refurbished, mind you). Since then, I've decided to only buy extended warranty (if any) from a manufacturer. I'm still on the fence though if I should buy one for my Forester.
  • kate5000kate5000 Member Posts: 1,271
already done! And since we're both on the title for the vehicle, it shouldn't matter which name is printed on the coupon. Thanks for the thought though.

As for crazy spending, think of it as helping the economy... especially here in the Bay Area, after all dot-coms went belly up.
