    Congrats on your new addition. My daughter has been pushing hard for a puppy lately, and I guess with 3+ acres it would be great to have one. She has me thinking about it. Hmm.... a nice male golden retriever to offset the 4:1 female to male ratio in my house. :)

    I recommend a shelter dog...they are the best...lots of dogs that need good homes....our mutt DIna is the sweetest 64 lbs of love...just a big mush. Try the North Shore Animal League or the ASPCA on 92nd St and the FDR Drive

    First I need to get my SO to agree, after I am convinced we are ready for one. (Crazy life) Since we both grew up with dogs it would be nice. Funny you should mention North Shore. My second dog (Max) who was 1/2 shepard and 1/2 husky was from there. We had a very bad experience with them. It turns out Max was not fed properly and had all kinds of problems when we first took delivery. After finally taking him to our vet, feeding him properly with some medication he turned out great. That was a long time ago, and North Shore seems to have improved. But, I agree, a good shelter is definitely a great way to go.

    Glad I bought an Impreza. There were a lot of clues that it would be good. The great test results previously on the Forester and Legacy and the new more rigid body (guess the extra weight pays off). The best clue was the WRX/Impreza booklets that showed Subaru's own crash test. Look at one if you get a chance. They have a picture of one being tested against an offset barrier!

    Ahh, but one of the best crash test results is a Subaru's ability to avoid one....in any weather!

    Greg: LOL! My male German Shepard helps me keep my family hormones in balance....
    (BTW: did you get my note about going to the NY Auto Show?)

    Greg, Steve-
    Mike, Mark, and myself (aka Paisan, Bat1161, and hypov respectively) are going afterwork on Wednesday, April 3, 2002. How 'bout making you date that day too?

    Steve, Dave: I got the message (Steve). However, this week I am traveling (your way Kate) and am not sure if I can break away next week. Need to check with my better half on scheduling. Would love to go. I'll let you guys know. Thanks for asking.

    Greg
  • If you decide to get a dog, and want a golden retreiver, there are a number of rescue societies available that specialize in goldens. My wife and I looked into them extensively when we were searching for a golden, and we were impressed. They spend time evaluating the dogs to determine their behavior traits, and make sure the dog and your family are a good match. It's a great way to go.

    Dave, interesting offer.... I sent a private note to Greg and Lyn (postmodern) asking about taking the day off and going Thursday 4/4 (we work in the same place). But if they turn down my offer, I would love to hook up with you guys on Wednesday. I just have to watch my connections, as I would probably come down on Metro North into Grand Central and thus couldn't stay too late.

    Greg: reminds me of Hadji. He had been mistreated, too. Starved, left out in the cold, who knows what else. He had four pairs of canine (feline? LOL) inscisors when we got him, because he had never eaten solid food. Stomach worms. He was a mess.

    Now he's the sweetest thing, everyone offers to dog sit for us so we never have to pay. :-)

    I could talk about doggies all day long.. but I'm still curious about that crash test. I feel safe in my car and all, but has anyone noticed at the bottom of the page in the fine print it said Subaru made improvements since 9/01 for front crashes. I was wondering if Patti or anyone knew what these improvements were.

    I spent yesterday at the San Francisco Flower & Garden Show (a pretty major event in the gardening world) & I'm pleased to see that Subaru was one of the sponsors, along with Alaska Airlines, Sunset Magazine, and 3 other local sponsors.

    I'm seeing more and more new Subies around here - getting out there!

    Subarus are quite popular in the Bay Area. I never really took notice until I bought one, but they're everywhere. They're even more common up in the Sierras.

    Just purchased a '02 Legacy L-Special Edition SW (auto) that Subaru Canada has recently created. They upgraded the L by adding the GT alloy wheels (205/55-16), keyless entry, colour matched body effects (side molding, mirrors, door handles) plus the 4 lamp GT headlamps and fog lights. We didn't want the double sun roofs, so this new model was perfect for us. For all the upgrades, Subaru was only charging $600 (Can. $) over the regular L base price. Two colour choices- silver or black. We bought the silver. We've kept our two '92 Legacy wagons- both with low kilos for the age. Traded in our '00 Outback 5spd for various reasons. Our '92's have had the rear metal dust deflectors for years. Never knew how effective they were until we drove the Outback without a deflector for the past year and immediately collected 'crud' on the rear window in crummy weather. We have two choices on the '02 Legacy for a deflector. An acrylic dark bronze installed for approx. $90 (would be similar to the metal ones we've had for years) or the silver coloured 'spoiler-type' for approx. $300. Question for those that have the spoiler-type on Forester, WRX, etc. They are definitely dressier than the acrylic but do they work as effectively? Thanks for your assistance.

    Does anyone know of a source for performance pulleys for a '00 OB ?
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
    Cool, Jillian, I bet we see a Burpee Baja edition to extend that link with flower shows.

    Jon: that's great. I wonder if you get the same suspension tuning that the GT has. Seems like you're getting the most essential stuff from the GT for less cash.

    Interesting link, Bob. I find it surprising, for example, that they recommend the G20, but not the Trooper, which they give similar ratings and reliability. Also, they need to update their recommended ratings to account for their own safety scores.

    Bob,

    or maybe CR just sucks as bad as I think they do. ;-)

    I suppose it might be a useful piece of data when weighed with other, more respectable journals... but I feel sorry for anyone who buys on CR recommendations alone.

    -Colin
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
    I like that they include data that most reviews leave out, like payload, towing, seatbelt type (booster seats are easiest with ALRs *), spare tire type, etc.

    But you're right, you have to take it FWIW. The "review" that matters most to me is my own test drive. I passed on the '97 RAV4 and '98 CR-V for that reason.

    * Automatic locking retractors. Our 626 does not have one and it proves to be a major pain in the neck. You can use a clip but have to adjust it every time.
  • paisanpaisan Member Posts: 21,181
    I hate them! For us husky people when we pull out the belt it locks up, and then you have to start all over again! :(

    -mike
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
    Pull them all the way out, then they will retract but do not allow slack as you tighten them. You have to let them retract all the way back in to unlock them.

    So yes, if you have to pull them all the way out to get them on, they won't give you any slack. So just don't pull them all the way out (you hear a click on my Forester's).

    But it's important because without it your toddler can basically get out of the car seat. You can use a locking clip but you have to move it every time she wears a different coat. Royal pain. I will not buy another car without them.

    -juice
  • paisanpaisan Member Posts: 21,181
    That's fine for the back, but a toddler shouldn't be in the front seat at all, so they shouldn't have em in the front, IMHO.

    -mike
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
    I don't know that they do, Mike, do they? I'm definitely referring to the rear seat. In fact I'm pretty sure my Forester does not have front seat ALRs.

    -juice
  • paisanpaisan Member Posts: 21,181
    I was referring to the front ones that a lot of cars have on the passenger side.

    Just wanted to give an observation on Subaru popularity. I was down in Charlotte, NC a week ago for a few days. In all that time I only saw 2 Subarus: 1 WRX sedan, and a Forester. My wife complained that I must be going through withdrawal not seeing any Subarus around. This past week we went to Newport, RI and it was Subaru country! Specifically, I saw more Outbacks than any other model. New England appears to be Subaru country, which kind of stinks that SONE charges more for the vehicle.

    Charlotte may not have many Subarus, but Asheville is chock full of them. My first exposure to the marque came back in the mid-1980s when many of my kayaker/hiker friends in the mountains of NC, GA and TN bought them. Only took me about another 15 years to get one of my own.

    Ed,

    I may get a chance to check that out later this summer. My wife has to go back for more training down there (her company is moving most of their operations there), so I just might do the trip down there next time. No more rentals! I had a Daewoo Nabirq(?) which had no power. After all, its only a 10 hour drive:-)

    Mike-

    I'll have to get back to you on that, although it does sound interesting.

    Dennis-
    I saw the I-club thread, and seriously considered it for about 2 minutes before saying "maybe next year:-)". I think I have to get a little more small road experience before doing the Dragon.

    Nubira, actually.

    The Dragon sounds fun, but I thought about it, and I bet it'll be crowded and you'll end up having to drive it slowly.

    for discussing something pertaining to Subaru? j/k ;)

    was browsing about the 'net at the various car sites, putting together 'ideal' vehicles for myself (dreaming). of course, I went back to the subaru site and put together a Legacy GT Limited sedan. One thing that struck me surprised was the 'performance muffler' option. no hp gain was noted, but it did state sound and appearance. $140 I think it was. interesting, but not expected to see it listed as an option. hmm.

    c'mon Subaru, surprise me with the 'freshened' Legacy at the NY autoshow. surprise me with it's 5sp AT or 6sp MT. VTD at least! whether its a H4 turbo or an H6 with or without a turbo, I'm not picky. ;-)

    I'd be the first in line tomorrow AM before the dealer opens to place my order. sure, it's no mini-van (what the wife wants), but she doesn't have to know, does she?

    (back to sleep now)

    Juice- Thanks for your comments. I don't believe that the SE has the same drive ratio (4:11), the suspension, front brakes or the limited slip of the GT. The sales information available points out all the extras that the GT has over the SE, of course the base price difference is about $4500 more as well. We've been very satisfied with our '92 Legacies with the 2.2 engines and I found that we didn't use many of the extras on the '00 Outback, hence back to the Legacy AT for us. As well, the clutch on the 5sp OB didn't appear to have the longevity that we were expecting.
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
    That's cool, congrats on the new ride. Tell us all about it during Thursday's live chat.

    I think the Legacy L really makes sense, if you want a no-nonsense, good value. Around here I could get a wagon for around $19k, under $18k for a sedan, which is amazingly easy to digest.

    But Loosh, it's like a bottle in a can...LOL!

    Brian: good topic to bring up: ideal vehicles! Let's do a survey.

    What 10 features would you put on your ideal vehicle? My list:

    * 6 speed manual tranny
    * engine making 20 mpg city with over 200hp
    * traction/stability control
    * 3rd row folding seat
    * AWD
    * 10/100 warranty
    * price: free, or at least under $30k
    * huge moonroof
    * heated leather
    * built-in booster seats (*)

    -juice

    * had to throw in one safety feature
  • hondafriekhondafriek Member Posts: 2,984
    20 mpg city and 200HP.(Right)the AWD.10-100 warranty,and the booster seats no proplem,but all of it in a sub $30,000 vehicle dream on.

    But if it ever came to pass heck I would probably line up to buy one.

    Cheers Pat.
  • paisanpaisan Member Posts: 21,181
    What milage would a legacy GT with H6 get as far as milage? Should be close to 20mpg.

    -mike
  • hondafriekhondafriek Member Posts: 2,984
    I have as you know a 2001 GT, and depending on how I drive, either like a little old lady or how I normally drive I can the city milage from the mid teens to the mid twenty,s.

    Lets face it most people that have 200 HP are going to use it, I know I would.

    As an example you need look no further than owners of the WRX. and the sort of milage they are getting when they shove the lead foot into the gas pedal.

    Cheers Pat.

    "As an example you need look no further than owners of the WRX. and the sort of milage they are getting when they shove the lead foot into the gas pedal."

    It's a disease...no known cure!

    Ross...HELP!
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
    This is all about a dream, the ideal vehicle. The VDC manages and has 212hp, so it's possible.

    I'll accept 20mph EPA city cycle, with the obvious real-world variations.

    Sorry, the shingle is down for the next month. It's getting to the craziest time of the year for me at school and life is throwing me some odd curves. I always had trouble hitting a curve ball. Hopefully I'll return in late April, full of good therapeutic advice.

    is a dark blue B4 Blitzen. vrrroooomm! 8)

    in reality, I'd settle for what I described in post subearu Mar 25, 2002 7:50pm. Isn't that a reasonable request?!?!

    that way I get the sporty sedan I want, capable of toting a car seat or two, and my wife can take the Outback until the larger SUW comes around.

    pretty please Patti?

    fine, here's my desirables in a sporty sedan:
    - VTD AWD
    - 5sp AT (manumatic not necessary, but would not argue!)
    - heated seats
    - room for 5
    - fold down rear seat - at least 40% to fold down
    - moonroof
    - LATCH attachments on the rear seats (for the child seats)
    - in the area of 200hp, 180 torque. no less at least.
    - 18 mpg city on 87 octane
    - VVT or similar

    I could go on. I'd settle with an Acura TL fitted with Subaru's VTD/VDC AWD with the H6 of course.

    ;-)

    Cost nothing and everyone needs one,my dream car would basically what I have,but with a twin turbo motor.

    Ideally I would like to [non-permissible content removed] mine without screwing up the warranty but since that ain,t possible I will just keep dreaming.

    Cheers Pat.

    Hello everybody. Just purchased a 98 GT Wagon with 53K miles week and a half ago. I'm wondering what kind of performance upgrades can I make on this car. I was thinking in terms of K&N Air filter, split-fire/rapid fire plugs and etc. Would really appreciate any advice. THanks, Leo
