Yes, but they picked the CRV over the Forester.

    NOT !

Especially pre-2002, when the CRV didn't have an engine, but rather a dried up old rubberband.

I would have bought the 2000 CRV, until I drove one "up the hill" as we say in these parts. The engine screamed at us the whole way - 5000+ rpm - Zero, and I mean zero, ability to accelerate, even in 4th gear and lightly loaded.

I've never been so disappointed in a test drive. Back seat is highly overrated, sorry. Lousy visibility to the rear with the spare in the way. We walked away and never looked back.

Edmund's has this strange idea that the CRV is more capable off-road than the Forester is, which I also don't understand. 8 inches of clearance my left ear. Ever looked under one ?

Hondas seem to have an aura of being really great vehicles. Not in my book. To many folks, BMWs have a similar aura.

I got a Subie because I wanted a comfortable AWD sedan. I didn't realize how exceptional it was until afterwards. The icing on the cake is being part of the Crew!

Its not just the dollars to buy the cars. it is the dollars spent modding them after that, some of the guys on the I-club basically buy a WRX and then gut it and start over, some of them must have as many dollars again in the car as what it cost to buy in the car in the first place.

On top of that, some of the prices they ask for the parts they take off are give away prices, a classic example is the low asking prices for the factory 6cd changer unit I have seen them as low as $125.

First chat night back in town and cannot make it, brother in law and his wife arrive tonight for a three week visit it is their first trip to Canada.

    Cheers Pat.

Now - is it DEEtroit or Detroit? Warshington or Washington? Everyone?

I'm here at 8:00 Indiana time which is the same as central daylight. According to the times posted for chat, and the time I've been on the last 2 weeks, I'm in the right place at the right time, so why does it tell me the room is CLOSED????
    Brenda
  • subaru_teamsubaru_team Member Posts: 1,676
I think they might be having a problem opening the room. Bob (the Moderator) will probably post an explanation soon. Hang in there!

Brian: I swear I could have written that rant. I may sue for copyright infringement. ;-)

Pat: I picked up two of those "take out" 6CD changers from WRXs. We can all cash in, there is a steady supply.

    Here, it's WOHR-shington.

Yeah, hey, what's up with the chat room? I was looking forward to chatting about the WRX's new face, and having Patti back.

I thought you'd be a WOHR-shintoner! I really wanted to try out the chat with the method they suggested for me. Bummer! I hope Bob is okay!

    (Michael's Favorite) Cookies
lots of variations on this recipe, but this one ALWAYS works and tastes great!

Mix 2 cups sugar, 2 tablespoons cocoa, 1 stick margarine, and 1/2 cup evaporated milk in a saucepan and cook over low to medium heat until it boils for 2 minutes. Add 1/2 cup peanut butter and stir til the peanut butter melts. Stir in 2 1/2 cups of old-fashioned oats and 1 teaspoon of vanilla. Drop on a foil-lined cookie sheet in small chunks.
That's it .. more 'candy' than cookie and wonderfully delicious. Also not much cleanup ...I usually get the peanut butter and oats measured out before I start ... and you can also use the 'quick' oats, but we like the old fashioned oats better .. we think the 'cookies' are more moist and chocolatey ..

Several years ago, the Crew had a hash browns discussion. Karen, one of our hosts, had a fantastic recipe. This cookie recipe sounds just as good.

I'm the proud new owner of a 2003 Forester X, AT, Pacifica Blue! It's my first new car. I'll have to come up with a nifty name for it, of course. :)
Can hardly wait to drive around this weekend.

for the recipe. It looks yummy. I'll make a batch today!

Hey - do you think we should start an Edmunds cookbook? Grilled turbot, Karen's Hash Browns, Brenda's MF cookies, etc. We could add Legacy legumes, Forester salad, Baja Brew? Okay - it's early!

    G'day

Several Years ago!. My how time flies! I actually just looked up the date of all the recipes and found it was exactly a year ago. Now, I am not fussing but I am still looking for the perfect recipe for Hash Browns - te sort that you get in US diners with stringy bits of shredded potato fried up and dripping with calories. yes, I know they are not ideologically sound from the waistline perspective but they taste nice.

Two recipes offered by Crew Members (sorry but I forgot to write down who gave the recipes) are set out below. Any other takers?

    Recipe 1
Choose your potatoes as to how many will be served. A medium size potato will take approx. 3 minutes to cook halfway through. Scrub your potato and pierce it with a fork, then microwave them. Preheat your frying pan on medium heat and spray with pan-coating spray.
Take your potato out of the microwave with an oven mitt and shred it into the heated pan with olive oil or vegetable oil and margarine using your Hashbrowner.
Pat the shredded potato to fill the pan with a spatula and let it cook 5 minutes. Don't scramble the hashbrowns at this time. This is a good time to make the toast and coffee or tea.
When potatoes are sufficiently brown, halve or quarter them and turn them. Make a little room for an egg and some pre-cooked thin-sliced ham. Let them finish cooking on a low heat -- approx. 3 minutes -- and salt to taste.
Serve up Hashbrown, eggs, toast, ham and coffee in around 10-12 minutes.
Clean-up is less than 20 seconds on the shredder.

    Recipe 2
Here's my suggestions for really CRISPY hashbrowns. Use only the Russet variety. They make the best hashbrowns and french fries. After peeling, shred the potatoes directly into a pan filled with ice cold water. Let them soak for at least 30 minutes, then drain and rinse with more cold water. Lay out several layers of paper towels on the counter and spread the potatoes on them. Put several layers on paper towels on top and press down to remove as much water as possible.
In a well-seasoned iron skillet (is there any other type of skillet?), heat an equal part of butter and peanut oil till it just begins to smoke. Quickly pour in the potatoes, salt and pepper and cover the skillet. Resist the urge to flip the potatoes till they are crispy brown on the bottom. Flip and brown the top side.
And what does that have to do with Subaru? Uhhhm....when going to a football game in your Subaru, you can make the hashbrowns at your next tailgate party??

having just climbed on the bathroom scales, perhaps I should back off this idea.

    Cheers

...got away in a stolen Outback, and the cops found the car using the OnStar. Glad they got 'em, but it also highlights the usefulness of OnStar to Big Brother.....
  • jfljfl Member Posts: 1,399
Graham, STOP!!! I've just dropped 20 lbs on the Atkins (low carbo) diet. I've been able to forgo the soft drinks, sugars, and rice, but I really miss hashbrowns and french fries.

I can't believe that thread was only a year ago.

Congrats on the weight loss! I too have been working hard to trim my waist line. So far 38 pounds since the first of the year, with another 25-30 to go...

    Bob
  • jfljfl Member Posts: 1,399
Thanks Bob, looks like you're doing very well yourself. Being the carnivore that I am, the Atkins diet is pretty painless - except for craving hashbrowns and french fries.

food is my biggest downfall. I just love to eat!! I've been also working out every day at the gym, both aerobic and weight training. That's the trick. I'm also getting back into running, which I used to do a lot of. Back in 1981, when I was 36, I ran the Baltimore Marathon in 3 hours and 24 minutes. I was 40 pounds lighter than I am now, however.

... a love of good FOOD ! (Between all the mods I've drooling over and the recipes floating around, this place is getting downright dangerous...)

So I broke our bathroom scale about a month ago (used it to check the tongue weight on our camper and left it in the sun too long - warped the dial to where it jammed, believe it or not Ripley) and just replaced it - I gained 5 pounds in 3 weeks !

    Yikes !

Well I HAD been down 13 pounds (BMI was 25), but not anymore.

    Bother.

Susan came home the other day with another bag of Sonho de Valse, the delicious Brazilian chocolate candies.

Kate, if I were you, I would bring an empty suitcase on your trip to Brazil and fill it up with these!
  • jfljfl Member Posts: 1,399
Nah, just buy a suitcase in Brazil, fill it up and bring it back.

Yea it is a great diet I lost 4o lbs in 6 mnths on it. Just be careful My cholestrol went up 60 points on it . Due to all the red meat ans cheese you can eat on it . I now due a kinda modified diet at it is working.

  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
Add red wine to your diet. That got my cholesterol down 32 points!

I'm debating whether to do Atkins. Bacon and eggs for breakfast, steak for lunch, steak for dinner? Nuts as a snack? What else can you eat?

No hash browns? No Sonho de Valsa? ;-)

Congrats and welcome, Subie Sue. Catchy name, too! First new car? Must be wonderful.

I should drop about 15 pounds ideally. The problem for me, I suspect, is the alcohol. That's a lot of calories I'm taking in as a wine lover. That and I need more exercise. I get some walking the dog and doing pushups/situps, but I need to make time for more strenuous workouts.
  • jfljfl Member Posts: 1,399
Atkins is less concerned about calories and focuses on limiting carbohydrates (sugars and starches). By restricting carbs, the body doesn't have "fuel" and therefore burns "fat" for fuel.

A 4 oz glass of red wine only has 2 grams of carbs. Supposedly, once you're at your desired weight you only need about 50 gms of carbs/day to hold that weight. (I'm generalizing a lot here, but it's the basic idea.) A bottle of beer, which I prefer to wine (gasp!), is 12 carbs.

Will my Subie be faster now that I'm lighter? Just to bring it OT.

Now we're talkin' something I know about. I've lost 74 pounds since April. Lots and lots of salad meals!

    Steve
  • rshollandrsholland Member Posts: 19,788
74 pounds since April! That's incredible! I thought I was doing well in that I've lost about 30 pounds in the same time frame, but you've got me beat by a mile!

Way to go! Are you exercising too?

    Bob
  • storytellerstoryteller Member Posts: 476
Exercise started with racquetball games during which I was hanging on the walls more than I was moving on the court. I walk vigorously for an hour and a half each day up and down steep hills with the dog, but now I need to up the ante.

I surely had that much more to lose than you. Your 30 probably brought you closer to your goal weight than my 74 has, and you can feel great about what you accomplished!

  • rshollandrsholland Member Posts: 19,788
I used to play that all the time—20 years ago. In fact I was the first "B" champ at the club I used to belong to. I played on their traveling team, and competed in many local tournaments. I used to love playing doubles and cut-throat, but only with very good players. It's too dangerous to play with duffers.

Being left-handed, I was an ideal doubles partner, as most players are right-handed. This way the backhand was always down the middle, and not in the corners. I used to have a deadly forehand kill shot. Ah memories...

Played a little squash too, and even less handball.

I still want to lose another 30 pounds.

    Bob
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
Oh man, I'm a big starch fan and a sweet tooth! I wonder if I could pull it off.

I think Michelob came out with a beer specifically for low carb diets - with something like 2 gms of carbs.

now we're into weight ... lol ... not long before I separated from my husband (now ex) of 26 years, I lost about 40 pounds in about 6 weeks. Unfortunately it was due to stress!!!!! ... but it was nice to be a size SIX !! And .. I was walking a lot which also helped ease the stress. For awhile, I was almost gaunt and was really tooooo thin (yes I've finally decided there really is such a thing! However, you can definitely tell there were some lifestyle changes. First a move to snow country and an apartment where I really didn't have a good place to get outside and walk. Second there just really are too many places to eat wonderfully well here. Third I'm truly and fully more happy than I've ever been in my life. Fourth .. there are two great cooks in my household! Soooooooo I'm pretty much back where I started weightwise ... Not really unhealthy, but a bit more than I'd like to weigh at present. We did recently buy a treadmill and with it in the basement in front of the tv it's pretty easy to use it regularly.
I've tried to concentrate on walking a minimum number of times a week rather than on weight loss, etc. Once that routine is more established I think it will be easier to watch more of the weight and food, although I have already lost a few pounds. I'm also trying to break the habit of hopping on/off the scales ... not enough exercise in that!

  • storytellerstoryteller Member Posts: 476
Brenda: 40 in six weeks is an eloquent statement about the stress of divorce. I'm glad things are more fun for you now. I've gone to school on some of these issues. Clearly, being heavy but active is better for longevity than being thin and sedentary. If I buy the used WRX I'm looking at I worry I might have so much fun driving that I'll never walk again!

This just came across the tape:
"CHERRY HILL, N.J., Oct. 1 /PRNewswire/ -- Subaru of America, Inc. (SOA), a
pioneer of crossover all-wheel drive vehicles designed for the active
lifestyle, announced today September sales of 14,064 units. The total
represents a decrease of 1 percent from September 2001 sales.
The Legacy model line achieved a sales total of 6,234 units, an 11 percent
decrease from last year, while Subaru Outback recorded sales of 4,178 units
for the month. Subaru Forester recorded sales of 4,348 units, an 8 percent
increase from September 2001. The Impreza line recorded sales of 3,067 units
for the month, which includes WRX model sales of 1,837 units. Sales of the
newly introduced Baja model began this month, with a total of 415 units for
    the month."

They don't say if that is up or down for the OB.

Thanks for the warm welcomes! It's good to be here.

Since we're on the topic of losing weight...I am still recovering from a terrible case of gastroenteritis vs. food poisoning. My husband also got sick. I couldn't hold anything down yesterday. It's a rather unpleasant way to lose some pounds, obviously not a recommended method. Today I am doing okay eating chicken noodle soup and goldfish crackers.
I have little to no appetite at all.

I suspect that it was partly my fault for leaving food out a little while before eating it, and maybe partly due to the food itself (cold cuts).
So keep those foods at the proper temps.
  • subearusubearu Member Posts: 3,613
This is the sedan listing at http://www.autosite.com/editoria/asmr/svsedan.asp for August '02. Legacy/Outback sales must be duplicated since they're identical and going over to the wagon listing lists the same number.
