Airport sure did self-configure. Smart little box, that. Sadly the DSL software automatically updated my browser and wiped my Edmunds bookmarks. dammit. Next challenge- get the Thinkpad to see the internet through the Airport. I can see the wireless network, but the laptop isn;t seeing the internet. Gotta work on that next. I want to be able to roam around the house with the laptop.

Serge- congrats to you and your son!

I had that same problem when I originally set up my Linksys wireless system. IIRC, the problem was "what kind of a client or system" the laptop was. It went against logic. Seems like I would have chosen "802.11b AdHoc", but it ended up being "infrastructure". Hope that helps. The words might be apples/oranges, but the theory might be similar.

Setup a few of these wireless systems, I absolutely love them. Well worth the extra $ for the linksys over the other brands out there.

WiFi is awesome. I have a Linksys network set up at home and it's great. My favorite is being able to sit in our living room with my laptop free of any cables and browsing the web.

Just make sure you take the security precautions like enabling 128-bit WEP, disabling SSID and setting up a MAC address filter. It's also good to keep a log of DHCP clients just to make sure. Tools like NetStumbler are pretty scary.

The first few I setup I didn't enable the WEP security. Then I was updating someone system and saw another network (a neighbors?) and decided I should enable it on all the systems I had installed.

I used Netgear equipt.. Wireless router and PCMIA card for my new laptop. Easy setup and works very well. Enables me to follow all the Edmunds boards from the comfort of my recliner. Using a cable modem, took 15 minutes to set up. I'm far enough away from roads and other houses, don't need the WEP enabled.

i set up Airport initially in 1999 with my iBook. Since then I've added two iMacs and converted to OS-X on each. Each time everything set up easily. Then there was the IBM Thinkpad that my wife uses for work. Several multiple hour sessions with my computer literate nephew later we had her thinkpad on. Fortunately for PC people Microsoft has their new WIFI software and hardware that is supposed to be easy to configure (3 years after Apple!).

    Has anyone seen this link?

    http://www.subaru-global.com/lineup/forester/interview/

It's off of Subaru's Global webpage and features interviews with members from the Forester design team. The website is in English, albeit a little choppy in the translation.

Nothing new there, but it is interesting reading. I thought the comments on the engine and driving performance were interesting.

Serge congrats to you and your family. Just today I replaced the Ferrari on my computer background with a Subaru B4 RSK.

Can't remember if I got this link from here or the other place.

Yep, it's a bit harder to set up PCs for 802.11 compared to Macs, but that has improved significantly with Windows XP. Still not as streamlined as OS X, however. For a real treat, try Linux -- it makes XP look like cake. They could both stand to copy Apple's Airport setup. The ironic thing is that Apple's Airport implementation on the BSD-based OS X is the youngest of them all!

I recommend enabling access control features, where the base station only admits clients if their MAC address is on the list of known computers. Best defense if you ask me.

    G'day

Well, congratulations to Michael. It really is a mark of babyhood left behind - manhood ahead. Mazel-tov to you and Susan. Not sure what one says to Dina although my wife's suggestion of woofle-tov might be close. Certainly I have Sirius trying to help me say something (she is climbing into my lap and "talking" as I type - just got home after a fifteen hour day and she has been missing the boss!)

Isn't it funny how quickly our babies grow up?

    Cheers

    Sincere apologies.
Didn't mean to refer Susan to Dina :)

    Apples and IBMs, anyway. :)

No luck so far. The machine my company gave me runs XP. IE knows to use the wireless net at the office, but hunts for a modem at home even though it sees the home net. A call to my company's IT guy has gone unanswered. :(
  • hypovhypov Member Posts: 3,068
    Loosh-
    Same laptop?
I'm not anywhere near novice in the 'puter arena.
I'm guessing your laptop revert to (hunting for) a modem cuz' it can't find the "Airport". The signature of the office wireless is diff from that at home. Might have to establish a separate connection config. via "Location Manager" feature like the Mac.

Ken: I'd like to see the Forester design team interview us (me, you, Frank, and Ed). They'd produce one heck of a Forester!

What's all this talk about airport, aren't we supposed to talk about cars, not airplanes? LOL

If you have encryption enabled on the base station, XP might have trouble making a key from your password. It will see the wireless network, but not be able to use the internet connection. There's a trick involved, and I can't find the dang URL. Anyhow, try temporarily turning off all encryption, access control, etc.... and see if you can join the network. In the meantime, I will look for that URL....

    Try this:

    http://www.macwindows.com/airportpc.html#4

Even if you don't have a Lucent card, this should still apply. It has worked for me using various 802.11b cards under Windows XP. You basically need to request a hexadecimal key equivalent to the text key set up in Airport. There should be a "Network Equivalent Password" option somewhere in the basestation setup (sorry, I don't have access to check right now) which will give you the hex code. Preface it with a 0x (that's a zero) and you will get the password Windows XP needs to use.

If you're like me, you might conclude that it's easier to turn off encryption and just use MAC-address based access control!

    Good luck!

OK, just heard from Patti. She's not allowed to post or chat because she's currently on disability and this is considered "work" by her doctors.

It's a long, uphill road to recovery for her, so good thing she has AWD. :-)

She says his to everyone and promised to return as soon as she's allowed to.

Loosh: Try starting with no filters and passwords first and then add them one by one. I found out the hard way that it's difficult to troubleshoot three different variables at once. Also, when using WEP, use the hexidecimal code instead of the ASCII equivalent. The reason is that the ASCII interpretation of the code can vary from machine to machine.

juice: That's a great idea. We sure would have one beast of a Forester!

I was really beginning to wonder about Patti. I'm glad she is recovering. I thought she would be back to work by now. It sounds like her recovery is going slower than expected. Does she have any idea as to when she'll be returning?

    Congrats Serge!

    Patti - Get well soon!

How do we know Patti's not still posting? She could be Juice or Ken or Ed or... ;-).

  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
Though now that I think about it, that's what was written to me by e-mail. Perhaps she's in the dungeon again, and that's SoA's standard "line" while she's in there.

Patti took one for the team to get us the very complete STi, poor thing! Let her out, Subaru! We want all the cool cars and 300hp but we want to keep Patti too! ;-)

  • hypovhypov Member Posts: 3,068
    she's in the dungeon, again...
then it would mean more surprises on the way :D
Figured SoA would have caught on by now ;)

True, we know that when Patti is MIA, big surprises are in the pipeline.

But why can't we have both?

Patti's probably in a communications blackout until the turbo Forester arrives. ;-)

Ed: How do we know you're not Patti saying you're not Patti?

Hi, I've posted on a few other threads and never formally posted here, where I should have started. Let me start by saying that the crew here is one of the best sources of information and well written, thoughtful discussions that I've found online. I have found quite a bit of useful information, and I hope to give back as I'm able to from my experiences with these cars.

Here's a photo of the triumvirate, although the GL is currently for sale:
    http://www.messmers.com/outback/three1.jpg

If anyone has a moment, feel free to let me know what you think of my little ad I have posted for the car, it's at this link:
    http://www.messmers.com/gl
If anyone has suggestions for improving this, by all means post or email me directly thru the ad. Thank you.

My fiancee and I have an '03 TS and '97 Outback, plus the '89 GL that's for sale. We like Subarus, obviously. The Outback was a good compromise between the part of me that wanted an SUV at the time I bought it and the more realistic part that prefers to drive a car and realizes that most of my driving would be back and forth to work, as much as I'd rather be camping and snowboarding and doing the things that people in SUV ads do but people in SUV's rarely do, if at all.

Thank you to anyone who has provided input and opinions in the past; I hope to reciprocate when I can.

         - (yet another!) Steve

Brenda is somehow an anagram for Patti! I haven't cracked the code yet, but it must be so. ;-)

*music in background- the high energy tune they use at basketball games that goes "y'all ready for this!?"*

*Lucien dancing around the room doing the victory dance that looks like someone stirring a huge vat of imaginary whoop [non-permissible content removed]*

THAT, Craig, was the fix. I was on to it late last night (there was a reference in the Airport help readme) but that link you posted was crucial. It was a hex/ASCII problem, which that link addresses. WE'RE WIRELESS, BABY!!

Brings good memories of my old Loyale'92... is it Mica Ruby color or a different shade of red?

Note how well interior held up. When I was selling my Loyale, everybody commented on a good shape of upholstery, even though I did not use any covers. And that car survived 2 children, plus it has never been garaged.
  • outback_97outback_97 Member Posts: 130
We are the xth owners of the car, so unfortunately I don't know much about its past adventures. It had service / oil stickers from New York state, Arizona, and here in Utah, where we bought it from a dealer where it had very recently been traded in - this car moved a lot. It seemed quite well taken care of, but the miles are pretty low. Both good and bad in that, I guess.

Kate5000: Not sure what the color was called; it's a nice red and we like it. The paint and body have held up quite well. The cloth part of the interior is great... the only problem spot is on the top of the back seat in front of the rear deck, which has some brittleness and cracking... I suppose the AZ and UT sun and heat are to blame for that. Other than that, I'm really impressed with the interior as well. It seems that it was of a higher quality than the new TS is, but it's hard to compare a 14 y.o. car w/ a 14 week old one.

Where I work I am "Steve In the Lab", since there are two here. But, "Yet Another Steve" is good, too.
