You know what’s really dangerous? Just try and send a simple email requesting a quote to an Internet sales dept and not catch a serious case of new car fever! Yep, just call me stupid. I think I need an intervention!
An XT equipped pretty much the way I would have done it myself for $200 under invoice (anybody get a better deal than that?). Now throw in 0% interest for 24 months and I’d be losing money by not buying it right? Oh the temptation! Meanwhile I’m wondering if I hold out for the 05s (which should be coming out late spring/early summer), whether SOA will wise up and include the PP with the manual tranny. I’m also wondering if the 05 XTs will have more relaxed gearing and therefore better gas mileage (but a worse 0-60 number) and whether that’s a good or bad thing? I think I’m going to have to join Loosh in the chamber of impossible conundrums! (So what's a good wine for that?) ;-)
This is what I mean by this crew being more like a large extended family, thanks guys for the kind wishs, yes Frank thats the girl, and no she will not be going, and we are happy about that.
Texas geography lesson .. lol .. Where Pat will be is NOT hill country and it's not a very "pretty" part of Texas unfortunately (because there are some really wonderful areas ... ) San Antonio is about 4 hours from where I'll be, but I've been known to do the drive and back in a single day .. I love San Antonio for lots of reasons ... And Austin and San Antonio are about an hour apart .... hmmm ... I could go for food in San Antonio .... lol
To drink all that excess of red wine you have Down Under I suggest to run a trans-Pacific RedWine pipeline from California to OZ... and then you can hear that "big sucking sound" (c) Ross Perot :-) from the USA.
Heck, just leave the gearing as is but give it the 6sp MT. 8-)
That is one beauty about the WRX and XT, you can get them at least near invoice, below if you're lucky. The new Legacy will likely garner closer to sticker at least early on, maybe through the remainder of '04 if it's as much of a hit as we're all thinking it'll be.
My dw has decided (finally!) to quit her social work job and be an at-home mom. She'll continue selling her Tastefully Simple stuff and plans on growing that more, but is really looking forward to spending more time with our kids. So, I'll likely continue in a holding pattern until maybe March or so, just to make sure she's all settled into her new journey. That java black XT MT will be waiting for me...
Mark - the 2000 vin: first 3 characters 4S3 code for SIA built passenger car; B = Subaru B line; next letter E for sedan / H for wagon; 6 = 2500cc engine AWD; next digit is the model (2 thru 8); next is restraint type (5 or 6); Check digit; Y = 2000 model year.
Probably more than you ever wanted to know about your Subie (Legacy/OB) vin number.
Loosh - some time back, you mentioned on this board "chowhound.com". Since I travel to San Antonio regularly, I checked their Texas thread. You will be about one hour away from Black's BBQ in Lockhart (www.blacksbbq.com). "BBQ so good, you don't need sauce!" Their brisket is fantastic. A co-worker of mine is a San Antonio native whose father said there's nothing within the city limits that compares. Have a great trip.
We only have pulled-pork around here in VA, but I had some beef brisket BBQ in Taexas a few years ago, and it was outstanding. I frequently think about it. Next time I'm in Texas, I am really going to chow down!
Hmmm... well I can rationalize that I've patiently waited 6 months until the the prices have dropped to below invoice. So what if there's absolutely nothing wrong with my 01 (other than excessive mileage). Argh!
I wonder- are they expecting the new legacy/OB design to do so well that they are discounting the XT and WRX now?
Jim- Thanks for the education on the VIN. Now if only I can remember this stuff:-)
Hey Mike- change the 48hrs run to the following weekend, and route us through Detroit. We can make it into a big meet at the show. Imagine having 15 or so Subarus showing up outside in time for the launch of the new Subies.
Having transferred to this area of New Jersey (Northern Passaic County) about 19 months ago, I would be happy to let you know my experiences. Send me an E-mail at lrfreelander@hotmail.com
The drive along I-95 is (edit:) not very flattering, but the Pine Barrens and lakes in the area are fun, plus it's close to many major metropolitan areas (NY, DC, Philly, etc.)
Papa Bear: Best thing my wife ever did for her husband & kids is retire after our 3rd was born. She did the stay-at-home mom thing for 4 1/2 years, until the perfect job came to her - 3 days a week, school year, same school my kids attend. You'll (neither of you) regret it.
Thanks for the quick responses. To be more specific, I would be working in the area of Wayne (I met with the recruiters in Chicago, so I don't know the specific location). I would try to live within 20 minutes of work.
Insurance: definitely one of the areas I will investigate. I'll call my insurance and see how much damage I can expect to my rates if my family moves.
DH's econo box has just bitten the dust and we are in the market for a reliable used car to take it's place. Much to my shock, knowing that he is a confirmed Big 3 customer, DH's #1 brand under consideration is Subaru ;-)
I've just spent some time here on Edmunds researching used car prices so that we don't get taken to the cleaners by the local dealers. Should we expect to pay closer to Edmunds private party price or the dealer msrp??? Or should the price be lower? Any particular things to look out for? Of course, the 2 recent snow storms don't help our bargaining position!
The used car arena is a total buyer's market right now, that's the good news.
Tell the hubby that Subaru's biggest shareholder is GM, and that the Legacy, Outback, and Baja are made right here in the USA, by Hoosiers. Compare that to, say, Dodge Intrepid, which is made in Canada for a German owned company.
Check out a used Legacy or Outback with just under 60k miles, if you can, so you have a little warranty left over.
Wow, Juice I am impressed. You know what ethnic group I am! Yes it's us basketball loving, corn and soybean growing, flatlander, indy car fanatic, republican voting, Subaru and Toyota building Hoosiers. (This is not at all a slam on my fellow Indiana citizens. It is the things I think are best known about my state.) Any others out there (Brenda the transplant Hoosier) care to comment on our fair state. (I think that tragedy has taken us from one excellent governor to another.)
Lyn- If you're buying from a dealer I think the best you can hope for is to get close to the Private Party price. However, be prepared for some serious negotiating as the asking (sticker) price will probably be at or above Edmunds' Dealer Retail price. Keep in mind that how good a price you get is directly effected by the laws of supply and demand. The good news is that Edmunds' prices do a pretty good job of taking current market conditions into account. Good luck and let us know what you decide on and how you make out.
From Texas, we were out this morning and I was surprised at the number of Subarus around here, there is a Subaru dealer about 10 mins from my daughters, with quite a good stock.
Will try make the chat tonight, but as if I did not have enough trouble typing, my daughters keyboard has korean symbols so I may be just areader tonight :-)
where you gonna be in the hoosier state ... i'm in notre dame land .. (south bend) I have to admit that as a sixth generation Texan I had some difficulty believing I'd like living anywhere else (we Texas are a bit state proud!), but I have to say I LOVE it here ... I miss my Texas family, but I do honestly love it here ... let me know when you're headed this way, if you'd like to meet up I'll get you an email to use ..
These cookies got the name MF Cookies since the b/f's son loves thes cookies .. so they are Michael's Favorites .. they are also called "no bakes" or "candy cookies" ...
2 c. sugar, 2 tbsp. cocoa, 1 stick margarine, 1/2 c. evaporated milk, 1/2 c. peanut butter, 1 tsp. vanilla, 2 1/2 cups oatmeal (although you can use the quick oats, I prefer the old-fashioned oats in these cookies)
Mix sugar, cocoa, margarine, and milk together and boil 2 minutes. Add the other ingredients. I drop these by spoonfuls onto a foil-lined cookie sheet. We're lucky if they cool off before they're all gone ...
I usually make these at Christmas, because they are SOOOO easy and look and taste very special ...
2 egg whites, 2/3 c. sugar, 1 pinch salt, 1 c. chopped pecans, 1 c. chocolate chips
Beat egg whites until think and foamy and gradually add sugar and beat until stiff (like making meringue). Stir in salt, pecans, and chocolate chips. Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Drop the cookies on foil-lined cookie sheet in small peaked chunks. Place in the oven, TURN IT OFF, and leave the cookies overnight. Makes about 2 dozen.
Brenda - My co-workers and I will be headed for Elkhart (a stones throw from South Bend). We haven't finalized the date yet. BTW - Thanks for the cookie recipes!
Churrasco! - the best place to eat for those on the Atkins diet!
:-) Thanks for the warm welcome to NJ. I'll be flying out Sunday evening for final interviews first thing Monday. I'll have a couple of hours following the interviews to look around before heading back to the airport. Any opinions on what communities to drive through?
With as many Crew members as we have in the area, a regular NJ meeting would definitely be in order.

Great, now he'll need therapy. Where's Ross?
You know what else is funny? None of the Crew regulars owns an STi. C'mon, someone's gotta bite!

Insurance rates very widely, so call around a lot for comparison.
swamplands - A lot of flooding in Wayne the past couple of weeks, huh? :-(
If I'm rambling too much, it's because I just had my department holiday lunch at http://www.churrascariaplataforma.com
We sampled a couple of CA wines :-) (the old standby Berringer (merlot) and a Napa Chardonnay).
Missed out on the Brasilian drink, caipirinha. Maybe next time. :-D :-D

We should form a Jersey owners' club. Maybe we can meet once a month at Paisan's garage.
