I would definitely pick a Tribeca over a Pilot -- the Tribeca is a lot nicer (and fun) to drive. It handles exceptionally well for the size (probably better than my OB XT). I thought the Pilot handled pretty much like any other SUV/minivan, which is to say "lousy".

Some of my relatives have an AWD Sienna, and it is very nice. Still a minivan with a FWD-based AWD system, but it's damn slick. If I needed lots of room and AWD, that is the best option I know of. If you can put up with slightly less interior space/utility, the Tribeca would be my next pick.

Everything went well yesterday (though delayed by 2 1/2 hours) with Susan's surgery. Some pain and discomfort which come with that type of surgery, but she will be home from the hospital tomorrow morning to begin a 2-3 week recovery period. Thanks to all for your thoughts and wishes.

Serge, glad to hear that all went well, you will both be glad to on the other side of the surgery. Give our best wishes to Susan for a speedy recovery.

    Cheers Pat.

That's good news Serge. Say hello to Susan for me, and that I wish her a quick, full, and painless recovery.

Sure enough, Subies all over the place. At one point I parked between two other Foresters. :D

If the West Coast Crew has a get together, someone snap some pics, OK?

Tom: if it has to be bigger than a Tribeca, put my vote down for an AWD Sienna. Nice thing is you can get it basic or loaded, any way you want it/can afford it.

Serge: that's good news, send her our best.

holy cow that tire is nuts!

it appears that there is wear considerably farther down the shoulder and onto the sidewall than normally would be. it seems that it might have been driven flat or very low on air pressure until the sidewall failed.

    Whoa, no kidding!

I only saw the red X before, but I cut/paste the text in to my browser and just saw that tire.

It looks like it was cut apart by a competitor with those spiked hubcaps. I've never seen a sidewall destroyed that badly.

DH and I went to Indianapolis yesterday. We went to Joe's Crab Shack to eat (since we have no seafood restaurants in town except for that "brightly colored clawed shellfish" chain and we don't consider that seafood!), and then to see Lewis Black along with John Bowman. A very funny evening, and then a 2 1/2 hour trip back home. (I took a personal day today from work.)
The trip was a combination DH's birthday (last month) and first anniversary (tomorrow).

    It was great!

Has it been that long, already? I remember you telling us like it was yesterday. And seeing that unforgettable boulder you call an engagement ring.

Best wishes to you, our VP of Stealth Intelligence and Fast Input.

thanks Colin. Life is full of compromise. It's certainly better than nothing though! (I test drove the 6MT which was easier to shift than my LGT!)
I'm hoping he lets me take it out on the track. He's told me the car is mine anytime I go back to LA, so I'm looking forward to my next trip!

Thanks guys for the car advice. A question, do you guys really think a Sienna AWD will do ok in snow up steep hills? I work on top of "pill hill" in Seattle which becomes problematic getting there (and back down) when it snows. I'm just a little nervous about a 4000lb AWD minivan making it. (No problems in my Subie though)

I am pretty sure the Sienna AWD would do fine on a snowy hill.

Funny thing was I checked tire pressure all around before we started that morning. I had to put in on the drivers side rear wheel, yet this was the passenger side rear. And I didn't feel anything until a minute or two before it totally went!

No question - It's a run flat. Look very carefully for a puncture.

And how long does it takes to deflate a tire? When tire shops take out the valve (about the diameter of a large nail) about 30 seconds.

Then it only takes a mile (or 2) to get the sidewall to fail like in the picture.

    Tom,
Up? No problemo... I'd worry more about getting down :)
    The 'slippery in Seattle' scenario...

Tom - Nice to chat w/a fellow Puget Sounder (I'm in Everett). Invoice for a 2005 automatic Legacy 2.5i is $21,323, minus the $1500 rebate puts you around $19.8k before any factory-to-dealer incentives (add about $1000 for a wagon), so I don't think getting an '05 Legacy under 20 grand would be difficult at all. Carter Subaru in north Seattle (great dealer if you're looking for one) has three '05 automatic Legacy sedans still in stock., but I'm sure these are going quickly everywhere.

An '06 Legacy SE adds a touch more HP, bigger alloy wheels, standard air filtration, immobilizer key and larger brakes, plus the SE upgrades to power seat and moonroof. '06 automatic SE invoice is only $21,885 (that's a lot more for $500!), and would come in at $20,885 after $1000 rebate and before any factory-to-dealer incentives. I bet you could come painfully close to $20k for a brand new '06 Legacy with all those goodies over last year. :) (Again, about $1k more for a wagon).

    So many tough choices.
  • jeffmcjeffmc Member Posts: 1,742
Yah, the really slippery times are when you get a slug stuck under each wheel.

    :P
  • tsytsy Member Posts: 1,551
Ah, yes. Down is more problematic on pill hill. I watched a lady in a Range Rover last year go careening through an intersection because she couldn't stop. So much for 4 wheel drive! :D

The AWD minvan option sounds pretty good. But the Pilot does have a lot of room inside, and should be better at light offroading to the trailhead.

Still leaning toward the Pilot. I think the Tribeca is too small (and underpowered. And I still can't get over the appearance)

Jeff- I didn't realize you were local! Yes, I considered the legacy option, but for about $22k I can get a v6 camry or accord and for $20k a Sonata. The Legacy is terribly underpowerd compared to these cars. These other cars are also a little bigger. But I'm still considering all my options. :D

I agree, those slugs are slippery!

    tom
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
The V6 Camry only makes 190hp (SAE), so it's not as much of an advantage as you might think. The new Sonata did get a nice boost, though.

This just came in by me:

Two Tunnels Shut Down on I-95 Due to Security Concerns

"government has received a possible terrorist threat involving two tunnels along the I-95 corridor in the Baltimore, Maryland."

Hope everyone is OK in the area, and it's nothing.

Just wanted to chime in and say hi... I know it's been awhile but moving to Atlanta and finally settling in was no easy task. Anyway, hope everyone is good.

Congrats to all who's had their anniversary, like me on Oct. 14. Went for a 7 hr drive to Orlando.. had a nice time.

Oh.. and at the price and performance, you can't beat a Sonata (6 cyl.)

And Swampy doesn't have to worry about terrorist in NJ, the place stinks too bad to even touch it ;)

    Chao!

Yah, the terrorists tried to establish a training base in NJ, but couldn't pay for mafia protection. Seems they just disappeared one day. Those things'll happen.
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
I think we ran over a couple of bodies when we took our Subies out there for a fun run. ;)

Funny but true NJ story - I drove on the Turnpike with a buddy in my old Chevy Sprint, and there was a terrible stench. I figured it was just Jersey, no biggie. Turns out it was my clutch. He dropped me off at JFK airport and drove it home - but didn't make it. He was close but had to call a tow truck for the last few miles.

We never suspected the worn clutch because the clutch odor blended right in! :D

does that mean I'll get a discount buying in NJ rather than NY?

Well, anything that smells, just smells like NJ. For some strange reason, Swampy sounds he feels just right at home

Hang in there buddy! We'll keep our fingers crossed that you and the other two or three Florida Subaru owners make out okay, despite the best efforts of Wilma.

    Serge,

As you know from our trip down to your neighborhood this summer, Beth and I have a ton of family within spitting distance of your place. The storms and their aftermath are always on our minds. Hang tight!

    Steve
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
Whatever that means. I've just always wanted to say that. :D

On the radio they said some folks in Palm Beach had those aluminum storm guards tear right off their houses! Yikes!

I hope yours are well installed.

The pup looks a little frightened. Probably knew something was coming!

My current big fella doesn't seem to be too up on the weather, but one of our previous German Shepherds would freak out prior to a major storm. She was a great predictor of upcoming bad weather. The vet thought she had a very sensitive inner ear and could sense the barometric pressure changes.

    Steve
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
Ashley was like that. We'd get about 24 hours notice before any storm came.

She would shiver so badly, if she was on the couch with you, you ended up getting a free massage! :D

Hadji just hides 20 minutes prior to any storm. So we still get some notice.

    G'day

Our dog is the reverse. Totally unfazed by loud noises, storms or whatever else comes by. Only time we have ever seen her react was when she was out walking with Judy and a lightning strike and concurrent thunderclap occurred nearby. Dog maneged to get all four feet off the ground at once.

However, the merest whisper of an unexpected noise will stir her into action, guarding the house. Quite handy really.

Hope the storm has not wreaked too much damage

    Cheers

Not Annie, our Golden. She's terrified of thunder. Whenever she hears thunder, she heads upstairs, and burrows herself in my closet. No wonder all my clothes have dog fur. :(

    G'day

The dog fur problem should have dictated that we bought a beige interior as Sirius, my half Kelpie, half pharaoh Hound shed generously although having little coat to show. I wonder whether I should shift to wearing beige suits or just get a grey dog next time.

Does anyone have a remedy fro removing dog fur from car carpets? We could lay a second mat down with what Sirius has left behind.

    Cheers

I've been on the road for the last week on a business trip to Beijing and Shanghai and haven't had time to log in. I finally was able to connect today and just wanted to drop in to say hello.

Everytime I come out here it's amazing how things change so quickly, especially with cars. There's quite a variety available now -- even Subarus if you're willing to pay an outrageous price. Buick and VW are quite common with Toyota and Nissan coming up very quickly. The other day, I was sitting in a VW Santana 3000 (based off the old Fox model) taxi when I heard a blow-off valve and saw an Evo zoom by!

Can't wait to get home to be back with the family and drive my Leggy!

Sounds like an exciting trip Ken! Enjoy it, as not that many Westerners have been to China. How do the "locals" react to Americans over there?
