Wow that allows 70% of the light through. Is that only for the front 2 windows on the sides? or all of em? Especially since most SUVs are stock with 20% on the sides.

70% for front windows on sides only... you can have as dark a 5% (limo tint) on the back and sides.
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
A-ha, that makes my Acadia Green Metallic a collectible! ;-)

Drew: too bad that Forester was an L - the alloys would have been a good buy.

For some obvious reasons I can't comment on "aftermarket", but I can say one thing....negotiate, negotiate, negotiate. The fly's with honey approach can work.

The CA Vehicle Code reads as follows:
    (d) Notwithstanding subdivision (a), clear, colorless, and transparent material may be installed, affixed, or applied to the front side windows, located to the immediate left and right of the front seat if the following conditions are met:

    (1) The material has a minimum visible light transmittance of 88 percent.

Bit- Yeah but how many folks actually pay attention to that? 88% is basically clear and I know I've seen cars in CA with tinted windows.

A light tint on the front windows would be hard to detect especially if you have a darker tint on the rear windows.

However, cops around here in Northern CA sometimes do pull you over for tinting your fronts. My friend got ticketed in Berkeley soon after he arrived from LA. He never had a problem in SoCal.

My 00 had 20 on the front. I drove it for 8 months and never got stopped for it. And that's in the bay area. I think with the rears dark in combo with a such a light metalized film that is a little reflective it is hard to tell if they are tinted. I am still waiting for hot weather and finding the right tint to do the 01. Juice - you have Solargard but not metalized right? Anyone have the Solargard metalized?

It's true, I am starting to feel the same way "Must buy Forester, Must buy Forester". I can think of no other logical explanation. I read these boards and it starts up again. Does anyone know a cure?

Greg: get a Rex and a small trailer!

BTW, did we ever decide if the WRX could tow?

Regarding tints, aren't trucks given more leeway? I know the Forester is technically a car, but I doubt you'd get a hard time from police.

I have Solargard dyed film, yes. Technically, I am not supposed to have the front-side windows tinted, but I guess they assumed it was a truck and they just did it. On my wife's car, they made us sign a release, but note that she had the exact same tint applied (35% all around except windshield).

Anyone see the movie "Finding Forrester"? I think I'll go take a hike in the forest near my house. Maybe I'll paint my room Forest Green too. I'll have to check on my Casio Forester watch to see if I'll have enough time to do all that today! ;-)

I think there is a webpage somewhere that details each state's laws.

In NYS, its the same for cars and trucks.

forward most side windows: 100% (ie:no tint allowed)
anything behind that can be 0% (ie: painted)
Windshield can't have more that 4 or 6 inches of some kind of tint, although I'm not sure if it can be 0% or if it's limited to 5%

When I had my front sides done, they told me that it was illegal.

There is an entire Window Tinting topic, and I remember the link appeared in there, if anyone's still interested.

Laws vary a lot by state.

    -juice
  • francophilefrancophile Member Posts: 667
Impossible. Every window in every car has been tinted for over 20 years, probably for over 30 years. Clear glass went away a long time ago.

Maybe what they mean is nothing beyond the factory tint.

I'm not interested in darkening my windows as much as I am in reducing heat transmission. This Subie has the hottest interior of any car I've had in the recent past.

Yes there is (or was) a web page the lists the legal limitations for each state. I'm sure I saw it in the tinting topic. In GA cars aren't allowed to have less than 35% on the back windows while trucks/SUVs can have as little as 5%. Since the Forester is a quasi SUV, my tint shop said that I could put whatever I wanted on the back windows. I went with 20% so there's only a subtle contrast between the front and rear windows.

Bit- I got Solargard metallic about a year ago and thus far I'm quite satisfied.

    For the $100,000 car list?

    my garage would have:
    Porsche Boxster (Red)
    VDC Outback (Black)
    Impreza WRX (Silver)

(why do I get the feeling this will sound like everyone elses?)

anyway .. I've made it to London, UK. Alive and well, and even survived a week of misadventure. Strangely enough, I have been dreaming about buying a TS or WRX wagon when I get home :)

I can't be sure, but the side windows may only be tinted a minute amount. But basically on the driver's window and passenger's windows on the sides, you can't put anything on there other than what is stock. The only stock tinting I'm aware of on most cars is the top 6" of the windshield.

Hey, I was just kidding last night on the chat! I logged and the first thing I see is your response to a question "I have a WRX turbo," and it struck me funny so I posted "Well goody for you" and then you left!! I'm sorry if I made you mad, droog, it was all in good fun 'cause you know I'm jealous! :))

Let's see .. the car's I find most unique: Well the number of Ferraris roaming the streets gives Hollywood stiff competition!

As for the average working person's car .. there seem to be an awful lots of beamers and mercedes around. Or.. maybe its just me not noticing the ugly other little boxes :)

Haven't seen any new model Subarus here yet though.

btw - I'm living just next to the Marble Arch tube station, about 5 minutes walking distance to Hyde Park. If you're ever in town, ring me at 02087527409.

    cheers, ash

Ash - If you contact SubieGal (www.subiegal.com), she would probably hook you up with some of her UK friends. A few of the Brits post on the i-club and say to look them up if we're ever there. I would definately be tracking down someone with an STi or P1 :-)

    Ash,

One reason you wil see more MB and BMW over there is companies do fleet leases for their employees. Rather than pay them more, they will give them a company car to use. I know about this because a friend of ours used to work for BMW trying to sign up companies. Enjoy the change of scenery.

I posted several weeks ago the problem I was having in getting my 2000 Outback LTD to to up an incline from a standing position and the terrible smell in trying to do so. Well, the dealer replaced the clutch several days before I left for a trip to Richmond, VA, from my home in extreme western North Carolina. The vehicle had 10,800 miles on it at time of the replacement. No problem with going up these mountains now.

This might be of interest. I drove from my home to Richmond on one tank of gas. When I filled up I had driven 417 miles and it took 13.7 gallons to fill the tank. That comes out to 30.4 mpg. On the return back home I drove 412 miles and it took 14.7 which averages out to an even 28 mpg. I assume the difference was because I drove faster on the return trip and it was eventually going more up hill. Thought that was pretty good mileage though.

I was looking at your website a few minutes ago and was just wondering what happened to the Blue Trooper that was in the Subaru/Isuzu Pine Barrens trip? Did it break something, hence requiring the tow truck?

Ash: check out Scoobynet for local events and such.

30.4mpg? You must be lovin' life! Especially with gas prices the way they are.

Pine Barrens looks like fun. I was trying to get the house in order for visitors (and earning a few honey-do credits).

Juice, anytime you want to go there, let me know, you would have LOVED it. I feel pretty confident now that whenever we want to go back it shouldn't be a problem. We had a great size group only about 7 cars. Everyone stayed together and no one hotdogged too much.

  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
Yeah, we'll make it back up there some time. Maybe I'll send the wife up to CT to visit her folks with the baby, and we can go crazy.

How 'bout autocross on Saturday, off road foray Sunday?

Would that be hilarious or what? Doing both in the same vehicle! Maybe we could reverse the order for laughs, since they'd see all the mud.

    -juice
  • paisanpaisan Member Posts: 21,181
Sounds like a plan. All the Englishtown Auto-xs are on saturdays, so we could definitely do that! I know I won't need to twist Bluesubie's arm to go again.

It was a blast. I couldn't believe the RS's were hanging in there (even the lowered ones) through the ruts and mud. Too bad about the other Trooper though.:(

I was rolling when I got home @ 9pm and watched the Sopranos last night. They GOT LOST IN THE PINE BARRENS!!!!! I was like yup, you just go in circles around and around and around... Good place to dump bodies though.

  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
The photos are slow to load, but it certainly does look like fun. I can't believe that Celica and lowered RSs made it - did they bypass the tougher stuff?

    Anywhere to camp around there?

    -juice
  • bluesubiebluesubie Member Posts: 3,497
The guy just picked up the All-Trac the day before for $900. Everyone stayed together through the trails, although not everyone went over that hill. The RS got stuck there and a few people gave him a push. I made it up that hill in the background of the Celica.
It's near the Lebanon State Forest so there's plenty of camping.

I'm not sure if it's my DSL line or the pics themselves causing the problem. (Or the fact that a ton of people are hitting the server) Yep the pics are too big, just checked, they are like 4-5x as large as the other files I have on the site. Tonight, I'll edit them for faster loading.

I'm sure there is camping around there, could definitely do a weekend trip, it's also not too far from the Jersey shore as well.

Hi everybody (don't all scream, "Hi Doctor Nick!" at once),

I've been on the road for the last week (Worcester, MA and Phoenix, AZ) and am just now checking in. Had an unfortunate run-in with a 10d nail driving back from Phila. Airport Saturday evening. The nail went in right at the shoulder of the right front tire, so it couldn't be repaired. I ended up going to a nearby NTB, having the spare tire removed from the spare wheel and mounted on the alloy where the flat was, then having the tires rotated. The new tire is now on the right rear. I had to order the Yoko Geolandar for the spare wheel so I hope I don't get another flat for the next 3 days.

I'm a little disappointed because I was hoping to replace all 4 Yoko Geolandars at once with tires that are a little better on dry pavement without sacrificing wet and gravel handling. I'm more worried now in that the car is now shod with 3 tires with 22K miles on them and 1 tire with about 10 miles on it. I know someone has addressed this elsewhere but I don't know where, nor am I having luck searching. Am I doing harm to the AWD system by having this combination of tires in place? There's still plenty of tread on the 3 with 22K, but I'm concerned that (1) even miniscule tire diameter differences can wreak havoc and (2) having to replace 4 tires when 1 goes flat can wreak havoc on my wallet and hence, turn me off to long-term Subie ownership.

    Thoughts?

    Ed
