I always have trouble figuring out how to 'link' photos. The one I have is very similar to the floor model on the right in the link to the Victrolas. And mine is in that same great shape!

I may have mentioned in here before that I also have some other 'early technology' at my house. I have an antique player piano with all of the original 'pumping' mechanism that must be made of lead because that stinking piano weighs a TON! But it all works and we have lots of music 'rolls' for it as well.

I see no discrepancy between having the modern geeky things and these antiques. After all, they were forward thinking technology at the time!

A VV-XI in oak is indeed a nice find. My unit is in the more common red mahogany finish.

I was introduced to this hobby by my uncle in the late 1960's, and the Victor that I used to play with as a child now sits in the corner of our dining room. A gift before he passed away 10 years back. Over the years I've bought and sold units, rebuilt the mechanicals and refinished cases. I used to have to travel down to Edison, NJ to the nearest trade show, but a few years back a great show settled into a venue less than 35 miles away. http://www.intertique.com/ And of course, anything is available over the internet.

I have a few radios as well, but prefer the mechanical whirring to exploding old paper capacitors!

These antiques were the super high end technological marvels of their day. Possibly why I'm drawn to them.

Apparently the one I have was given to my grandfather (maybe some time in the 50's or 60's) for some work that he had done for a friend. He ended up giving it to my mother, and she gave it to me at the same time I moved the player piano from her house to my house.

My parents bought the piano in about 1963-4 for me to take lessons. When they bought it, it was in pieces in several different rooms. The piano was being rebuilt. It has all the original mechanisms in place, but the also added an electric motor - so it can be played without the physical pumping if you want. The pumping is EXCELLENT exercise!

Today I went online to pay some bills and ... $600 has been taken out of my account yesterday!

I have blocked the bank card, but I have it in my possession. Not sure how the transaction was 'stolen' ... GRRRRRRR will call the bank 1st thing in the morning. Have already emailed the info since that's all I can do on a Sunday afternoon.
  • volkovvolkov Member Posts: 1,306
Hope it all gets worked out. We never had any trouble with 20 years of card use and then twice in a month we had to cancel CCs because the number was being used fraudulently. No idea where it came from.
  • hondafriekhondafriek Member Posts: 2,984
I hope you get it straightened out Brenda, I am leery of any online transactions. As a matter of fact I hate all plastic. I know it is really behind the times but I still believe cash is king, you pay with cash there is no pin number to dublicate or some scam set up on debit and other machines that can copy your info as you swipe the card.

    Cheers Pat.

Made arrangements to leave school this morning long enough to go to the credit union when it opened at 9:00. After some "sleuthing", we found out that the transaction was made in Indianapolis (about 3 hours from here) at a shared credit union service center. The person making the withdrawal had a 7-digit member number, but the teller did not type in one of the numbers ... making it MY 6-digit member number. Once that was tracked down, the money was immediately transferred back into my account. Didn't take too long, and I really felt a lot better knowing it was a clerical error - and not a breach in the security of the account.

    Still ... not GOOD!

    Cash is king

That germ laden, maybe counterfeit, can't cancel it if you lose it stuff? :D

Since moving to a small town where many of the shops and cafes don't take plastic, we've been hitting the ATM at least once a week. In the old days we'd just charge everything (and get air miles).

Have to admit, it's pretty nice having a VISA bill come in that's half what we were used to paying.

My AMEX corporate card 'disappeared' at the hotel check-in desk in San Jose last November. It was busy, I was exhausted from travel, and, well, it happened. Within 15 minutes, it was in use up and down First St. by the airport, and migrated down the coast toward LA overnight before I got an alert from AMEX and shut it down. Being a personal issue company card, getting all the charges reversed was pretty painless.

Now for the weird part... Within a day, a personal charge card (number only - the card never left my wallet) suddenly took on a life of it's own as well. Did the bad guys somehow tap into some resource and cross-reference my ID? Visa was pretty good about those charges (took maybe a little more than with AMEX, but not bad), and we had replacement cards from both companies with two days. We put a new credit freeze with the agencies, and so far all has been quiet.

Plastic is a risk, but I really don't know how to live without it. Travel is near impossible if you don't possess one (good luck buying airline tickets or renting a car), and Paypals will only get you so far on internet shopping (of which I'm a confirmed addict...).

Subaru tops Mazda, Toyota and Honda in Consumer Reports' new ranking of best automakers

    http://www.autonews.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20120228/OEM/120229878/1283

Huge news for them, it's like David just slayed several Goliaths.

The news will headline the April Issue so the marketing value is enormous. This is the kind of thing that gets people to automatically say "just get a Subaru" when asked for a recommendation.

Apparently the new Impreza soared in the ratings and is now their top pick among small cars.

#2 was .... well, who cares, right? ;)
  • rshollandrsholland Member Posts: 19,788
AJ is right. It may not mean much to gearheads, but for the average car buyer, this is a like a gold stamp of approval. Expect to see Subaru sales rise even more because of this. So... kudos to FHI & SOA!

Such endorsement can also be a double-edged sword. When you have new customers flocking to your product, you better be darn sure it is rock-solid. If there turns out to be some sort of Achilles' heel with these new designs (CVT or FB engines), there will be a whole flock of (ex) owners denouncing the brand for decades to come.

When you have experienced ownership, meaning those who have owned more than one vehicle of a given brand, isolated bad ownership experiences are more likely to be tempered by perspective. That is not so with "converts."

Well, they designed the FB with headgasket issues in mind. Subaru was already bitten, so hopefully the engine is solid.

The CVT is a question mark, we'll see.

Has anyone used one of the bluetooth keyboards with an iPad or android tablet? We were given iPads a couple months ago for work, and now I end up carrying my netbook AND the iPad all the time. I can't type what I need to do for work on the iPad without a keyboard. I just ordered one so I'll let you know what I think of it when it comes. Lots of info/reviews out there on the keyboards and cases with keyboards ... I need a separate keyboard because we use the iPads with students. Taking it in and out of the case would not be very handy I don't think ...

I know many love them, but Dra and I are not big touch screen fans be it tablet or phone. We are being dragged towards the iPhone on our now overdue contract, but chose the BB years ago because we find the tactile pad superior for us. For that reason we are planning to get the Mac Air in an 11" instead of the ipad. Not much bigger or heavier, much more powerful, real keyboard and much more resistant to abuse.
Should mention we do have the BB tablet. Liked it for it's smaller size which makes it easy to drop in a purse and even some of my coat pockets. It's best functionality has been as our new camcorder. Fantastic for the ability to record a swim race and really watch at the same time.
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
I've used one - the one from Brookstone, IIRC. Leather case with the BT keyboard built in to the bottom, so not a solution for you.

It did work ok, but the whole kit weighed in at over 2 lbs and that defeats the purpose of a tablet IMHO.

I've seen roll-up keyboards at those stores but can't vouch for them.
  • ladywclassladywclass Member Posts: 1,713
The iPad was bought for me by the sp ed department out of some 'stimulus' funds and we're encouraged to use them with the students - more so than for us. They will be 'checked in' at the end of the year, and 'checked out' again next year.

I have a Kindle Fire that I love for portability and the 'few' things I want to do away from the desktop / netbook.
  • ladywclassladywclass Member Posts: 1,713
I have tried one of the 'roll up' keyboards and didn't like it. I want a 'firmer' key to push against when I type. I'm pretty fast on a regular keyboard (about 90WPM with gusts higher that that) and the 'mushy' keys on the roll up board just don't work for me.

I ordered the keyboard yesterday and it was here when I got home today. Easy and fast to hook up and once it's 'paired' with the iPad I don't have to redo that step unless I'm pairing it with other devices, which I probably won't be doing. Only played with it a bit, but it seems big enough.

Now I'll be looking at apps for word processing, spreadsheets, etc. There are some free apps that got some pretty good reviews so I'll probably be trying those out in the next few days to see how they work.
  • volkovvolkov Member Posts: 1,306
Yes, I understood that. It was more of a "feel your pain where many others don't" post.
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
We've chatted live, I think you're more like 900 words per minute. You could probably set some keyboards on fire. ;)
  • ladywclassladywclass Member Posts: 1,713
I think you've misjudged the speed as a lot faster than it really was ... but then I understand that men often misjudge lengths as well ....

"Walked" might be a little too modest, AJ.

Thanks for the concern. Guess I should have posted something here. We live in the far northern part of the state. We had some gusty winds but not ANYTHING like what the southern part of the state has experienced. We had a day last week where high was in the 30's, then next day in the 60's, then right back to the 30's and 40's. Snow last two days. Supposed to be 20 tonight and up to 60's again by midweek then right back down again, so I guess we have more 'potential' in the coming week.

I'm in South Bend. I live about 10 miles or so from the Michigan state line. The storms were near Louisville in the southern part of the state. I was worried about Ed for awhile. Doesn't he (or didn't he) live in Evansville?

Just came back from my niece's house here in Chattanooga where we're visiting. They had minor roof damage and lost several big trees in their back yard. Her hubby works at home and saw the funnel. Lots of their neighbors lost shingles and one house lost all their windows. My niece is still without power (they spent the last two nights with us at my brother's house). A few roads are still closed and there's extensive damage a quarter mile away, but fortunately few injuries. We somehow managed to dodge all the storm cells in IL, IN, KY & TN driving down Thursday & Friday.

Yeah add my concern about all those poor folks in Tornado ally. I Complain about winter up here in the frozen north, but man I will take our weather anytime.

    Cheers Pat.
  • fibber2fibber2 Member Posts: 3,786
And unfortunately it is probably the mild winter that we are enjoying in the NE that is contributing to the woes of those in the ally.

Action & reaction, the unintended consequences....
  • hondafriekhondafriek Member Posts: 2,984
Oh more than likely Steve, although the weather is totally whacky all over the world at the minute.

    Cheers Pat.

Man, near impossible to get on this site again. About the slowest loading thing (if it even loads at all...) I've encountered since the dial-up days!

It is a major log in issue that has been plaguing us for some time. The IT folk have finally nailed down the problem (I hope) and a fix will be implemented next week. I hate to be a Negative Nelly, but I hesitate to hold my breath that all our problems will be over. :( Keeping my fingers crossed and eyes to the heavens.
