As the originator of the idea, I heartily endorse this location (World's End State Park). If we want to do it in the Spring, we need to nail a date & time, now that a location has been recommended. If we want to wait, Fall is also a beautiful time to visit Pennsylvania. Staying away from Summer works best for me only because of family & Harley commitments. Your comments?

Bob, according to mapquest, I am 356.6 miles and 7 hours and 46 minutes from Worlds End State Park. That's nothing to a Dakota! I hope you are allowing regular cabs and club cabs at this gathering also. I'm afraid I only have a lowly RC, although it does have the 4.7 engine.

    Trippinglizard,
I took a razor blade and some carb cleaner to get the sticker off the back window of my cap. Looks better without it and now I'm not always thinking some guy in a red car is right on my butt!!

Scottie, if and when we get a place in FL, we will buy a "Ratmobile" and leave it there.

Bobby, stop bothering me with photos of insignificant dips in the road. Can't you recognize a PA pothole when you see one?

    Help Needed Please
Well it has happened My 01 white qc has taken on damage. A 4x8 sheet of plywood hit the tailgate and put one hell of a dent in it.
Does anyone have any idea where I could find a factory painted white tailgate? I have found A new one that I would have to have painted and cleared but Could they match it perfectly?
alsoI was looking for a company that takes off the beds and puts on service beds on dakotas since most of those are white I may have a chance of finding a tailgate. thanks for any info that you could share

bob, I don't think it was me, but I have been known to wander aimlessly. Besides, I would never pass a nearly identical qc without a smile and a wave! :-)

The noises are back . . . this weekend I did more driving with the windows down and noticed more of the rattling and this time some squeaking sound too . . . I know it's not an in the compartment noise but like a metal part is loose . . .
Soon I'll take it to the dealer and see what they have to say.

My truck was made like march 8th or something like that. The sound is a metal rattle that comes from the right middle area of the truck. Exhaust? Front wheel problem or brakes??

Let me know if you've found anyhting out!!

    Tiny Rattle
Gator72..... thank you for the suggestion. It is a single tick sound somewhere in the truck. Sounds like it comes from the passenger side. It kinda sounds like it comes from the b pillar or further back in the truck, rear seat area? It is hard to track down. Easily drowned out by turning up the radio. If it gets worse, maybe I'll have better luck trying to find it.

    traumagas - tailgate.

Jon, I don't think you have many options here. If it's not repairable, you can buy one from Mopar, you can buy one through a pickup accessory store (already painted or not), you can buy a tailgate overlay (I'm sure your not into that!), you can call around to junkyards and ask them if a clean one comes in. Sounds like a predicament... I hope you find a solution.

Re: HIGH PITCHED WHINING SOUND from REAR END ???

I recently purchased a 2001 Quad Cab, 4x4, 4.7l, SLT, with tow package and heavy duty service group, etc. Though the truck has yet to reach 1k miles, I cannot help but hear a very annoying high-pitched WHINE coming from the right rear wheel area...I plan to return to the dealer by the end of the week, but wanted to "put out some feelers" so that if others have experienced this same type of problem, I will be able to take some additional knowledge with me when I go. Any comments i am able to gather regarding your expereinces with a similar problem are very much appreciated...Other than this problem (which I know is repairable), I LOVE THIS TRUCK !

    re: rattle sound

I posted a question regarding a metallic noise coming from the quad cab on rough roads. To my chagrin I think the noise is from the trailer ball and plug in hitting the sides of the receiver tube. Hope this helps someone else.

Hello Quad owners, I'm thinking about getting a new Quad, any advice you might have on options would be appreciated. I'm looking at a 4.7L,SLT with the tire and handling group, I'm also debating over the pwr overhead convenience is it worth the price vs. the pwr convenience group. Also interested in the sure grip axle, I live in Louisiana so snow and ice is not usually a problem but might be when I go hunting in Colorado. The tow group is another option but is it worth the price vs. just adding a tow hitch(aftermarket). I don't really tow anything regularly, but are the add ons like tran.and pwr steering cooler worth the package price.

By the way I've also considered the new Toyota DoubleCab but not to crazy over the shallow bed and the 3.4V6 vs. the 4.7L Dodge, but did like the TRD package. Any inputs on helping me narrow my choices between these two would be appreciated.

My QC has a whining hinie seems it is around 40
mph does not occur under acceleration only around coasting. I have 10k on the truck will be printing post about and going to the dealer. I received a recall letter about the 4x4 switch also today so I hope to get that taken care of also. All in All I would buy this truck again and again. Oh does anyone know whats in store for 2002 ? I think I have found a tailgate for the truck keeping my fingers crossed. Biglucy where could I buy it already painted from Mopar?

    Recall notice.
I got one in the mail also. Have to schedule an appointment for that.
Anyone know how serious this recall is?
Can I put it off for about a month until my next oil and filter change?
I have had no problems with the 4x4 system.
    Thanks,
    Bob

Get the sure grip axle, either with or without the 4x4 system, it would help when your in those hunting places which may be muddy or snow covered.
If your going to tow, go for the trailer tow group. I got it anyway, just in case I tow in the future.
Heavy duty service group also, required when getting tow package.
pwr overhead convenience - I did not want all the extra power stuff, windows, overhead console computer, etc.
You'll have to decide what fits your needs best.
    good luck,

BRAKES! ANYONE WITH ROTOR/BRAKE PROBS ON QUADS??

I recently took the Quad in for service. My front rotors are warped badly. I dont need new pads but the rotors have to be turned according to the dealer. I have NEVER heard of rotors warping before the first set of pads wore out. They also said I need a rear brake job. What kind of crappy brake are they putting on these things.
My truck only has 18000 miles on it. I have towed a 4500lb boat only once and it was for approximately 6 miles. I am really po-ed. If this is the kind of crap this truck is going to start doing already I might as well get rid of it now.

ANYONe else have brake problems? Shuddering when stopping? Anything like that. I looked on the NHTSA website and there were almost 30 complaints regarding 2000 dakota's and the front rotors. Needless to say I am extremely ticked about this. Also the dealer said that the truck is "big and heavy with soft pads". Well if that is the case I could understand the pads going but the rotors warping. Give me friggen break.
  • bobs5bobs5 Member Posts: 557
    no brake problems here....yet.
    Guess they use cheap rotors.
Bummer dude, your past the warranty for brakes too.
There is probably aftermarket rotors that may be worth looking into. On another site I thought some people were using "powerslot" rotors or something like that.
    good luck

    stvdman - brakes

Same thing has happened to me with my brakes. I have a 2K 4WD SLT 4.7L... At about 17K miles the brakes starting shuttering. Sure enough, warped front rotors. I don't know how it happened as I don't ride the brakes and don't haul. The only thing I can think of was washing my truck with cold water after I had been driving it and the brakes were warm? Either way it is a bad design/parts. The brakes themselves are fine and I will replace the rotors with aftermarket parts. It is ridiculous that this has happened so soon but to this point this is the only thing problem I have had. Compared to my 1998 GMC this truck is a gem!

Its been a while since I have updated on my '01, 4.7 auto, anti spin, H/D Q/C which now has about 5K on it. I have been reading all the post about rattles, pings, brakes, rear ends going out, bad paint, trans noise, windows not working, missing stuff
cause Dodge is cutting back and more. I'm thinking these trucks are not what they should be, even if they are being fixed and backed by dodge, who wants to deal with all the things that are going wrong. I'm concern if the quality is there. I do think you all for the information on fixing some of the problems. I didn't read anything about this stuff until I got mine. If I would have heard about all the minor problems
    I would have when elsewhere.
I too have some rattles. My auto trans makes a clicking noise when I go from P to any gear and back. Something in the front rattles. My drivers window leaves a mark everytime I roll it down and back up. Wiper blades skip when in use and I have replaced
them once which stopped for a couple of rainy days and then started again. When at a red light with A/C on there is a vibration I can feel but my RPM does not show a change. Turn off the A/C and it stops. Also notice where the seat is showing signs of coming
apart. The power on the 4.7 is good and I have no problem pulling a 17' boat. I don't like the seats much but that will be alright. I also wish they would have made the front windshield a little bigger and the sides of the roof on the inside of the cab is a little thick. I hit my head on it getting out and with the stiff ride my head sometimes hits the side when turning and going over a bump. I get 15 MPG with out a cap and now that I have the cap I still get the same 15 MPG. I sometimes have a pull to
the right when driving and braking. Its getting better with more miles. That makes me think its the tires. I'm not putting down my truck. Just the facts. I still love the way it looks and the size and power. Its fun to drive and for the most it feels solid
People really like the size, looks. and power. I may be a little picky, but I have had 4 Nissans and have friends who has Toyota. Never a problem and they all have the same thing on them, unlike dodge who leaves something's off their trucks. Heck I have 2 friends with Toyotas and one has 350,000 miles on it and all he has done is replace the timming chain at 300,000 miles and now it burns almost a quart of oil between his 6000mile oil change. The other had 225000 miles with a water pump going out at
175000miles, does not burn oil. Whats up with that, why can't domestic cars and trucks do that.
Each Nissan I have had has more than 110,000 miles on them and up to 200000miles,I bought them new and have run them hard. Never took them back for any kind of service and never had any rattles are unwanted noises. I was just tired of the small size an
under power when pulling. When I ordered my Q/C and picked it up, it was missing the alarm, and I got the sliding rear window instead of the straight window with the rear wind defroster like I wanted. More on quality controll. I should have know then that quality was a problem with dodge. I mean when you order and they can't even get that right having 8 weeks to builb it. When I called them they said sorry but you diid get the price adjustment aand if I wanted to add what was missing it would cost more and I would
have to let the local dealer install it. They made the price adjustment for the missing stuff. I could have waited 6 to 8 more weeks but I had shopped around for 2 months and then ordered. I was tired of waiting so I took the truck. Those who had buy back
and got another one. If I had a buy back for any car or truck, Well I would not get another one of that kind, I would go elsewhere. All things I have problems with I brought to the 5 star dealer and they said in so many words, too bad but its under warranty and if
gets worse then bring it in again. I notice some Q/C's have the V8 badge on them but mine doesn't. I have had Chevy trucks and have other friend who have fords. Dodge is the best domestic made as for as I am concern. Foreign cars and trucks have the best
quality. All that I read about the minor problems have got me scared that I will be in the shop more than I want and I don't want under trained fools working on my truck. I also still have a '94 full size dodge truck with 106 miles and until last week
had very little problems but now all kinds of thing are going wrong. I hope I don't make anyone mad on this but if I ever buy again I will go with the Toyota Tundra. I don't care for the looks but I do care about quality. ( miss spelled ).
I will keep my Q/C for many years so I hope that the motor and trans last a long time with no problems are I will have to take a loss and trade. I own four trucks at this time, 2 Nissans and 2 dodges. Not one time has my Nissans been to the shop, no rattels and now my kids drive them. I guess what I'm saying is all the brands of domestic cars and truck I have had, some have had minor problems and some have had major problems and always I had to go round and round to get service. Not so with foreign.
since owning my '94 dodge it has had very few problems until now and reading reports on dodges convinced me to get another one. Like I said Foreign cars and trucks are better in quality and warranties but they lack in power and size except for the Toyota Tundra with its V8. I think I could deal with a little less power better than I can deal with less quality. Out of all the reports I have read non showed any problems that were a major concern. For as much as these trucks cost I think you should have no
problems for the first 5 years or 100,000 miles and if you do have a problem, then they should fix it without going round and round with them. People like details and dodge is leaving some off like the hood insulation and hood light, paint, badges, etc. This is a cheap way to make money and it tells me that the quality is not there and this is the case with most domestic cars and trucks. One thing for sure at this time it is too soon to tell how long my Q/C will last. I am worried about the trans because of the clicking noise when moving gears but dealer says its normal, it just sounds cheap to me.
All and all my Q/C is a good looking truck with good power. To buy one with a V6 is not good but to get one with a 4 cyl. well might as well get a bike. The 4.7 is great in power. Look I don't want to make anyone mad. I think we all should write dodge a letter and tell them how much fun the truck is to drive, good power, and very good looks but when you don't get what you ordered and their consistency in building in not up to par, and all the things that we are having problems with then we the customers have a problem with that. Because of the things I am reading about, I wish I would have went with Nissan or Toyota. Only time will tell but for now I think dodge is full of crap on quality. hope I didn't pi

Well, I recently went to pick up my new QC. Ordered it approx. 4 weeks ago. Unfortunately it did not come exactly as I ordered. Left out the pwr grp. Dealer said he would order another. On a quick look at the truck that came in- no QC badges or V8 badges. HHMM, seems like someone here said they called dodge and were told by DC that they wanted to know about this because it meant someone wasn't doing there job.!!! I didn't bother the dealer with these complaints because I'll wait till my new truck shows up. the build date of this one was 4/4. I guess if the new one shows up without the badging I'll know its a policy and DC lied to that previous person. I can beleive a person may screw up for a few days but not after dealer activity and calls to DC customer service bringing it to light. That may make me think a little harder on acceptance of the vehilce!!!! Anyways, I hate to see danodw postings because I am starting to feel like him. I realize that most good QC's are out there and owners happy but I consider myself and most people here a little anal about their vehicles. I think a lot of people live with small problems as long as the vehicle runs well.
Again, I fell for the QC size and styling and hope all goes well with the new order. I'll keep my fingers crossed and well wishes for all other QC owners. Thanks for all the great info. Keep it up. Tom.

I'm the one that called DC and this past Saturday I picked up my CC that I ordered 3/11. It was built 3/29. All badging was there. The only thing missing was my bedliner (on back order) and there were no covers over the underseat storage like on my 97. Not sure if there should be any, don't really need them . If they aren't supposed to be there I am sure DC willl tell the dealer when he places his missing parts order. The only defect I could find after a 4 hour inspection was on the trim surrounding the rear quarter window. That I will have them fix when they get my bedliner and also they will install my Lo-jack system.

I don't know what is going on with the QC line but is sounds like someone is sleeping on the job.

I have read a couple of postings that explain how to check your factory order status through the 1-800 customer service line.

I phoned the Canadian customer service number to get my truck's status and the rep said that he did not have this kind of information available. He referred me back to the dealer.

Has anybody tried to get their factory order status in Canada?

    Thanks for you help.

I went back to the dealer to discuss the brake problem face-to-face. They took me back to talk with the service tech. Real nice guy. He said he has replaced a ton of dakota rotors (go figure). I talked with the service manager and we had come to an agreement on the rotors, he would replace them at MY COST, gee thanks alot. I wont be getting this done from them. Which could be a good thing. I mean why put parts back on my truck that have already proven themselves as being sub-par.

Now the MORE thing. The ticking noise I complained about was explained to me as the limited-slip rear differential clutches were going, causing the clicking noise we were hearing. So they are replacing the whole differential assembly.

This truck WAS my pride and joy. If not for these repairs I would have thought it was the best truck I have ever owned or driven, which has been alot. Now I dont think I would EVER recommend a QUAD or dakota again.

Well gotta go, have to order some AFTERMARKET rotors for the QUAD.

I'm in same boat as kcowboy (#2766); I'm considering a QC purchase. What's your opinion on the following:

The benefit of the transmission and power steering coolers? (Towing not likely)

The value of the factory tow package vs. aftermarket installed later?

How to calculate fairing pricing? I've seen MSRP less 9% on this board, but that doesn't sync with Edmunds.

Is quality a big problem? Recent postings would make one think it is. Is it enough of an issue to rule out Dakota?

I realize this the QC board, but is there any experience or comment on the other crew cab compacts currently on the market?

    Your input is appreciated. Thanks.

I have not owned many dodge products in my life time. At least not new enough ones to get a fair judgement of quality. I can though as least report that the 00 QC 4.7L 4x4 slt that I have now has been good. It is almost a year old and a shade under 10k miles. So far the only major problem was the rear end whine from day one new. That has been resolved in a timely fashion as I reported earlier, and in fact may not have been Dodge's fault, as the transport people may have damaged the axle tube. Other than that I had a low pop sound somewhere under the passenger floor, poss cab mount, but only in very cold weather, so never found it. My new Ranger had 3 problems with it 1st year, radiator, brakes, and front end, which I didn't think was excessive. After the 1st year it was pretty trouble free to 54k when I traded it for the QC. So far this Dodge has had fewer problems. Also on the subject of rotors, I have had to replace rotors on both my 88, and 96 Tauruses long before pads were shot. Look at owner complains on all vehicles including Toyotas, Hondas, Chevys, etc and you will find numerous complaints about rotors and brakes. I don't think the quality is there in most oem rotors like it used to be. Please understand, that I simpathize with all of you who are having problems, but I won't condem Dodge or any other manufacurer's whole vehicle line unless I see overwhelming proof by acurate count that there are unusually high defects. Unless of coarse I get a really bad one myself! Good luck with your problems and fixes, Stnick

Lets not be too quick to blame Dodge for bad brake rotors. The problem goes back to our good old USA government. The EPA decided Asbestos (right or wrong)is bad for us so it was banned from use in most things including brake pads. Brake part suppliers scurried around for suitable replacements. They tried Carbon, Arimid Fiber, and sintered metal compounds (semi metalic) amongst many other things. Semi metallic pads were found to be just the thing (they could make them cheap and keep profits up) ----- however they found that the standard "hard" metal used in the current rotors sometimes caused a squealing noise when the brakes were applied and also they found the first few applications of the brakes didn't stop as well as well as they should until the rotors/pads warmed up. Being enterprising engineers they said "gee, the customers don't like squealing brakes and the FEDs don't like asbestos, so how about we make the rotors with a softer cast iron". Well now we have vehicle that stops better and the brakes don't squeal BUT the rotors warp when heated and then rapidly cooled. I had a similar problem that is being described by current Dakota owners on a 93 club cab. I cured it with a High Quality set of aftermarket rotors ($111.00 apiece). I believe you will find having the rotors turned to be only a temporary fix as they warp even faster when the metal gets thinner. This problem is not unique to Dodge. I am aware of several Chevy owners who have had the same problems. I'm not defending them but trying to cast a little light on the problem. Building a vehicle must be a tremendous series of compromises and I guess sometime they err on the side of profit (GRIN). My 2k Quad is approaching it's first birthday and 10K miles with no major problems. Just a small series of dents on the left rear side of the bed where the deer ran into the truck when it was only 2 weeks old. Rick

I just recieved my 2001 Quad sport on April 11. 4.7 auto intense blue 4x2 with most options except leather and rear slider, it came without the quad cab badges and the V8 badge. I asked dealer to order quad cab badge and he did but he asked why Iwould want it , I thought hey why not I paid for it , maybe I'll put it on my kids lunch box !! The axle was offset to the right also just like every other dakota on the lot , guess it's no big deal ,still handles great love those 16 inch tires and lsd. It had some play in the steering when I got it home , I found out that the steering joint at the rack input shaft wasn't tight enough ,had about 1/2 inch play at steering wheel.Took about 5 min. to fix. I also noticed that there's 2 eng fans 1 belt drive and 1 electric right in front of it what's up with that , when does the electric cut in ? This truck is alot of fun , don't know how anybody could test mileage on first tank when you either do 9 or 90 with the backend trying to pass the front end whoo hoo, break her in !!

For those of you who are trying to make a decision about the purchase of a new vehicle, please understand that the posts which are usually found here at the Edmunds site are usually complaints. If you were to go to other make and models, similar complaints can be found. I used this board for about 3 years before making my decision to go with Dodge. Initial problems seemed to be minor compared to other makes and models.

I have had previous Dodge/Chrysler/Plymouth experience before. Case in point was my previous car, 1986 plymouth reliant. Hey don't laugh, it was a pretty darn reliable little car, even with my lack of proper maintenance and abuse. It got me through 10 years without any major problems and never left me stranded. I would just fix the little things as they went bad.

A friend of mine purchased a new jeep cherokee back in 1988 or so. He experienced initial quirks in the first few months like couple of sensors, and a brake issue. After these glitches were ironed out, he put 180k miles on it without incident.

iowabigguy summed up the brake rotor issue very well in my opinion. The long life span for brakes went away when asbestos pads were discontinued.

Bottom line is, get what fits your needs and budget the best.

Don't see one on my truck.
It has the "QUAD CAB" on the rear cab corners, "DAKOTA SLT" on front doors, "DODGE 4x4" on tailgate, ram emblem on hood.
Is there suppose to be a "V8" badge as well?

David, I personally always opt in favor of "heavy duty" anything. Auxiliary transmission and engine coolers pay their way in spades over the lifetime of a vehicle whether towing is involved or not. Many drivers do not realize that rocking the vehicle in snow, or plowing through muddy or soft dirt conditions extracts a toll in the form of excessive heat generation. The tow package because it includes some of the heavy duty items is nice to have, as other items may be "plugged" into the receiver. Considering the addition of the heavy duty items, warranty considerations and ease of acquisition, the factory package seems practical. As far as pricing is concerned, many of our posters have made deals at invoice or a few bucks over, less rebates and the Farm Bureau $500.00 discount (if you are interested in the Farm Bureau discount, just post and we will provide information). The only other crew cab experience I have had, was test driving the 2000 Nissan Crew Cab. Light on power, smallish back seating, and the pedals (clutch/brake/throttle) too close to each other for my big feet. The 2001 Nissan offers a Turbo, which I have not driven. I absolutely love my Dakota Quad cab. It is a great truck. Good luck.

The V8 badge on the front fender was dropped for model year 2001. It is not missing equipment. I believe I have read that the QC badge has been dropped in midyear production along with the hood insulation.

OK my .02 worth. 2000 QC SLT, Forrest green over silver, 4.7, auto, 3.92, HD, T&H.. pretty much all the toys inside... and now about 25,000 miles. I have had: oil fill tube mod for "sludge", tranny tube recall.. All done within hours of dropping my rig off. I have been in for squeaking brakes (NOT warped as being experienced by several members). And I am still working my idle issue, which has subsided with the warm weather. ( I have a TSB reference.. ) The only quality problem I had was that weather strip on the rear doors fall off. $3 worth of 3M tape (NO DEALER VISIT) and it's been fine ever since.
I added an Extang snapless tonneau, ventvisors and bug shields, tinted windows and a REESE hitch for the occasional towing of a pop-up. Overall, I am VERY happy with it's performance, power, good looks and functionality (4 doors, roomy back seat etc..) I still get compliments from passengers on it's looks, ride and feel .. I agree there are some quality control issues that could be addressed, like the offset bed, badges etc.. however, I would still recommend it to anyone who wants a quality 4 door V8 PU to haul "stuff", kids and the bride.
    Just IMHO..

8 months and 15K miles, I am very happy with my quad. It pulls my 4500 boat just fine. I had the brake rotors turned under warranty and new pads were installed. The brake problem is a recent problem with all manufacturers. My 91 F150 would go over 75000 miles per front pad set and my wife's 93 Shadow about the same. I have heard all the truck buyers griping about warped rotors. It is probably like the late 80's when they all switched to water based paints and had to repaint or ignore the grays and blues that were peeling after only a few months.

Orig. Message: Quad was relased on Mar 23. It has been KZL (released-not shipped) ever since then. It appears that it it waiting for CSX Transportation/Railroad to get their act together and ship it to central Mass.EOM

Called DC. Quad is still in KZL status. Took a drastic measure and actually called the dealer. He put me on Hold while he checked status.
"Good news. We show it as being shipped. Status is KZL."
"Oh?" said I. ""When will it be in?"
"We don't really know. Vehicles are arriving all the time. We just got a load of Prowlers in from Mexico."
"How long does it take to get a Dakota in from Michigan?"
"Is that where they're made? You seem to know more about this than we do."

I then proceeded to explain to him what KZL status meant. Transport company has not picked it up yet. Not on a carrier/train yet.
"Well, there's nothing we can do from here. We'll keep you informed."
". If I hear anything, I'll let YOU know."

Who knows? Maybe I'll have one of the first 2002's. Just slap on a new badge/emblem in the space where the Quad Cab emblem is supposed to be and Voila!
Stay tuned to this channel for further developments.

I compared various quad-cab type trucks (Toyota, Nissan, Ford SportTrac & F-150) for many, many months before purchasing my '00 QC 4x4 with 5.9L engine. For my purposes, which primarily involves hauling my family of 5 + stuff around, the Toyota and Nissan products were way too small inside, and their beds weren't as large as the QC. The SportTrac is pretty cool, but is underpowered and not as good a value as the QC in my opinion. I love the F-150 Supercrew, but again I felt the value was better with the QC, especially b/c Dodge was offering 0.9% financing for 60 months when I bought mine.

My previous vehicle was a Mitsubishi Montero SR 4x4, and I've owned and currently own various European (Mercedes, BMW, Saab etc.), Japanese (Mitsubishi & Suburu), and American (Ford, GM, and my current Dodge) made vehicles. In my experience, the Japanese vehicles tend to be the most reliable. For all the hype, I feel that the German vehicles are only above average in terms of reliability, and they cost a lot to repair. I've had very good luck with my Ford Mustang and Explorers, though the quality etc. was not nearly as good as the German and Japanese made products. My GM experience was horrible (2 trucks that were lemons).

Having said this, with over 5k miles on my QC 4x4 so far, I have had ZERO problems with this vehicle. While I don't get the greatest gas mileage in the world, the tried and true 5.9L engine and the old 46RE transmission have been just fine -- no noises from the driveline etc. The fit and finish on my QC is about the same as I've experienced with the Fords, which is to say not as good as the German and Japanese vehicles -- but those were my realistic expectations for any American made vehicle in this price range. All in all, and except for the gas mileage issue, I'm very very pleased with my truck. I certainly hope and expect that I will continue to be pleased with my Quad's reliability etc. for at least the next 5 years.

    I hope this helps.

The V8 badge and the Quad Cab badges were not dropped. I just picked up my 01 club cab and it has the V8 badges right on the fenders where they should be. There were also a few Quad Cabs at the dealer that came in with mine and they all have the Quad Cab badge as well as the V8 badge, except for one which had a V6 badge. The only thing discontinued is the hood insulation on the SLT and the RT. To tell you the truth. I have it on my 97 and it isn't on my 01. I cannot tell the difference. The hood insulation is a mute point in my opinion.

The manual recommends using a special synthetic lubricant for the rear-end for any towing or heavy duty service. So I took my 01 quad-cab into the dealer today to have it changed. Has anyone else taken theirs to a dealer for this? My dealer wants $138 to make this change, which seems a little high. Why isn't the synthetic lubricant included with the towing package?

I have put about 950 miles on my truck since picking it up on March 31st. It has only a couple problems that I'm having checked out today also, rear seat cup holder doesn't pull out and when I turn the heater on to floor heat only the blower makes a load hissing sound. I've put 3 tanks of gas in and according to the computer all 3 have averaged around 17 mpg, combination of highway and city. So far I love the way it drives and looks. I will be making a camping trip with a pop-up camper in a couple weeks and look forward to seeing how it pulls it with the 4.7L V8. Thanks to everyone for all the info they share in here.

Thanks to all who responsed to my questions. Your no-nonsense feedback and experience is greatly appreciated.

I have one more question. What's the consensus on the 4 wheel ABS option?

    Thanks again.

IMHO, there is a world of difference between the 2 (standard) and 4 wheel ABS. I ordered mine with 4 wheel, and can definitely tell a difference. Not only can I steer through emergency braking (with front wheel ABS), I get larger brakes as part of the 4 wheel ABS package. I've yet to see a QC on a dealer lot with this option, so be prepared to order one.

I factory ordered my quad and I included the 4 wheel ABS. I made this decision based on our work trucks. We have 2 Suburban 3/4 ton and 1 chevy crew cab 1 ton all with 4 wheel drive and 4 wheel ABS. We do a lot of driving in snow, ice, mud and sand. I have had the brakes make the difference between a close call and an accident several times over the years. (Basic Truism - trucks that you don't own or have to pay for the gas get driven much harder than you would drive your own!) I felt they were worth the $495- Just my opinion. Rick

Does anyone have any idea what the qc has in store for the 2002 model
  • cowtownaggiecowtownaggie Member Posts: 39
I purchased my quad cab on 06/01. (4.7L/4x4/5spd/3.55/LSD/HD towing)

    Additions:
130lb METAL front bumper/grill guard (yes, I CAN move anything - (grin))
HD tool box for the bed
Hellwig LP-15 overload springs (1,500 lb capacity)
    Monroe reflex gas shocks.
K&N air filter (not the kit)
synthetic gear oil in the rear end

I use my truck as a daily driver (avg 90 miles per day), a weekend ranch work truck, and a family hauler. Since the 1st of Dec, it has been in 4wd at least once per week and some of that 4wd time it was used hard! I have had it axle deep in mud up to the bottom of the doors and not been stuck, although I have pulled out a stuck 3/4 ton powerstroke. That was fun, I have never let the guy forget it! (He is a good friend of mine).

Since I have had my QC dakota, the ONLY time I have had it in the shop for work is a turn signal switch malfunction and steering column issue. I have fixed my lower door seal with the 3M 2 sided tape, and I may have the oil cap issue, but it has worked fine so far!

So far in 10 months I have put 29,000 miles on the truck. Average fuel milage (29k mile combined total) is 16.4mpg. On the road empty at 75 mph avg is 17.1, Best is 17.8 mpg, worst is 9.8 mpg (10k lbs of metal on a HD 16 ft trailer).

I have had the front end squeak a couple of times, but I expected that with a 125 lb bumper on the front. I sprayed some silicone on the front bushings, got the good HD Monroe Reflex shocks installed, and it went away.

I use this truck like a truck, If I had wanted a Lincoln town car ride, I would have bought a town car. All in all, IMHO this truck performs very well for what it was designed to do (weight capacity, etc.). So far it has exceeded my expectations.

For all of the squeak, rattle, and popping front end issues, please remember that it is a $24k truck, not a $48k luxury car. I do not mean to make light of the issues, but please remember what each of us decided to buy. I realy belive that for the money, this is one heck of a truck. (And yes I KNOW I will get a LOT of excited replies to this).

I do agree that there have been some real problems with trannys, rear ends, brakes, etc. but lets not overdo it

    Just my 2 cents worth!

I agree with you! These things are trucks! I have 23k on my Quad in less than 8 months and not a visit to the dealer! ( just the gas station) I use my truck daily and hammer it when I can.
I think most of the people who post on this site are those who like to whine and have never put in an honest days Hard work in their life! I think they buy these trucks for the status and not a true purpose!

I have a 2001 QC, 4.7L, 2wd auto (NO LSD) Flame Red Sport with 3300 miles on it. It has the QC badge, no V-8 badge (bummer!), but does have the center console light. Fairly good mileage at 14.5 mpg. Really like the truck so far.
I also wrote about the clicking noise I hear when shifting from Park to Drive and/or reverse and back. Someone posted the answer that it was a solenoid I was hearing and was normal for Dodge autos.
I also hear a sound like brake squeal when decelerating from 50-60 mph every once in a while. No pedal shudder. Is this a problem?
Once in a while, I get a little hesitation after I shift out of Park into gear when it hasn't been driven in a while. No RPM swings (idles at about 600-650 or so). Is this a problem?

well they have all the parts for my new truck and it is red tagged for immediate build so they should start this week i hope. i am ready to get out of this one and get my new one. d/c has been great so far on this buy back and i hope this pleasant communication with d/c continues throughout the buyback. as for cowtownaggie i agree with you, these are trucks and have a few odd noises from time to time especially when you work them hard i like i do. if its a real problem i think it will become obvious very quickly in MOST cases.

    good luck all
