By the way, Cap Connections in Lebanon NJ, no longer carries the Snugtop brand of caps. They have the Jeraco brand. Base price of cab hi cap with matching paint was something like $950 or so, before accessories like sliding window, etc.
They want $379 for the bedrug bed liner.
Have fun with the new truck,
Bob
those decisions were reversed. A couple in court, a few following letters from attorneys, and the rest when field people told them to "grow up!" If the product that you use is sound and meets the requirements set forth by the manufacturer (we know that D/C does not actually produce any of these lubricants) then the manufacturer must accept them or have one damn good reason for turning down a warranty claim. By providing the supplier with the part number; Mopar PN 4874464 they should be able to supply an "equal to or better than" classification product. Usually the suppliers can cross reference manufacturers' part numbers. The trick here, is to see if a synthetic product meets specifications. There are so many
generic type products that are the exact replication of specialty items that sell for many more dollars. Air tool oil @$5.95 for a 4 ounce bottle; ATF $.99 per quart. Butcher block oil @ $5.95 per 4 ounce bottle; mineral oil $1.29 per pint and so forth. Hope that this helps.

I just wanted to get alternate viewpoints. I sometimes get a nervous facial twitch when a "controlling authority" uses words like "ONLY type recommended or accepted".
I appreciate your response and expert advice!

Here's the low-down
The Bubble Room, Captiva - a bit pricey (entrees start in the $20 range), but the desserts are outstanding, and HUGE! One dessert is enough for 2-4 people.
Hungry Heron Eatery, Sanibel - Their grouper sandwich is fantastic.
The Lazy Flamingo I & II, Sanibel - A favorite place for the locals to hang out.
These are just a few of the many establishments in or around Sanibel.
Have fun!

end of july for a week, can't wait to leave Jersey for a bit.!! See BOOKITTY is heading to that area also. I will be flying..Continental....
Second, PICKED UP MY SLT '01 QUAD...
Didn't have any V8 badge near bumper nor badge on cab.
Also didn't have hood insulation. Spoke with my salesman, got typical no longer avail..response.
Love it so far (39 miles) 5sp/3.92, skids, tow package, heavy duty cooling/electrical..rear sliding window.....Nice to have a cd unit...whole lot better then my portable cd bouncing all over the seat(s) as I had it with my '98.
Well, NO clunking, thumping, or whining sounds at any time yet..
Bob-me-boyeee s5, forgot what it was like to drive....sold the 91 dakota to hollingsworth.
Already got seat covers..just ordered westin step bar from pep-boys, and should be getting
my windowflectors (UPS) shortly.
Oh bobs5,last thing..HOPEFULLY THIS WAS GOOD LUCK..as J. Hollingsworth and I inspected the truck (about 2 hours) I was standing at the drivers side front quarter panel and a bird crapped on my windshield and MY BACK..Had a damn green stripe on my teeshirt even after I washed my shirt in the showrooms bathroom..Glad nobody came in while I was
partially naked..as some of those salesmen didn't look to "manly".
Everyone laughing at me,,not with me...when I was whining...kept whining
trying to get free owners repair manual..but that didn't work. hahahaha..later everyone..

I was very surprised when I pulled the QC into the garage and discovered that it is almost a foot longer than my 1990 full size Ford conversion van, which has been affectionately nicknamed "The Party Barge" by my friends. I had no idea the QC was so big, all this time I was under the impression it was a "compact pick-up" lol. Suffice to say I see now why the owners of the V-6 are so upset with the lack of power and poor gas mileage, the Quad Cab is simply too much vehicle for that small of an engine. I cringe now when I think how close I was to getting a V-6 QC! Thanks Again for showing me the light!
P. S. I'm extremely happy with this truck...fit, finish, power, and ride.

We pulled my truck into the service center and showed the service manager the missing hood insulation. He went over to the computer to check and see if they had one in stock, but no luck. When he came back over to tell me he'd have to order one in (overnight) and install it, another salesman that was standing close by overheard the conversation and came over to explain that he thought the hood insulation had been discontinued.
Rather than accept this explanation and try to blow off my complaint my salesman decided to call the DC regional sales rep and find out for sure. He came back and explained that he couldn't reach him but that he had left a message and would call me when he heard back, so off I went with my new QC and no hood insulation. When I got home there was a message on my machine from my salesman that they had order my hood insulation and the service department would call me when it came in to schedule an appointment to have installed.
Now it's pretty obvious from the number of people who are getting there trucks without the hood insulation that it's probably been discontinued and not just a case of someone not doing their job. However since none of the sales people are telling you when you place your order that it's no longer included and they certainly haven't lowered the price of the option package any, you have a legitimate complaint. I would suggest calling your DC regional sales rep and let him know your upset about not getting the hood insulation and give him a chance to make good on it. It's certainly not an expensive item and it's a cheap way for them go a little extra and satisfy a customer. I got the impression at least at my dealership that they wanted to make sure I was completely happy with my truck and satisfied before I left the lot.
As a side note... My only other complaint when I inspected my QC was the discovery that a bottle of touch-up paint wasn't included with my truck. It's been a number of years since I bought a new vehicle and apparently times have changed and car makers now want to sell you touch up paint instead of including it. To my surprise my salesman made me this offer..If I made sure to answer the questionnaire that DC was going to send me in a few weeks about my buying experience and how I was treated at my dealership, and brought it back in to him he would wash my truck, get me a free bottle of touch up paint and fill up my tank with fuel. Now I've never bought a Dodge product before, but if any future problems I might have are taken care with this level of customer service I might just become a loyal Dodge owner!

Some observations and questions:
All options are there
-no plastic wrapping anywheres on the body
The right side of the bed is out of alighnment, it and the rear tire stick out about a 1/2 inch, is this something they can fix before I pick up and sign the papers, and if so, how do they fix it.
No stinking badges to be seen anywhere
A few minor scratches and paint bubbles, will point this out before they prep.
Right side rear fender flare has a chip in it, should I have them fix it or replace it?
With the doors locked, there wasn't much else I could do, I plan on going down there tomorrow for a pre-prep inspection to supplement my post-prep inspection, I want them to get it right the first time!
One last quesiton, I'm gonna give them all of Monday 4/30 to inspect and prep, pick up Tuesday 5/1, the Sales Manager asked if he could put 4/30 on the paper so it lools like a April order...does anyone know what DC is doing with the rebates of $2000 on 5/1, and other than losing one day off of the warranty, what other problems would there be picking up on 5/1 with the papers dated 4/30 (what should I bargin for with the dealer to sign the papers as 4/30?)
Even with all the dust and dirt, and not being prepped, that bright flame red truck is looking good?
Thanks...
Alex4X4 I have said it before and I'll say it again. In March of this year DC discontinued the hood insulation as it was not needed. I spoke directly with DC about this begfore I picked up my 01. Check out the equiipment listing for the SLT on the dodge website and you'll see that there in no mention of hood insulation anymore. If dealers are putting it in it is only to shut you up. Having a 97 with the insulation and an 01 without, both SLTs I can tell you myself that DC is correct. There is nothing gained by having it. The noise level is abbout the same. The hood sounds solid when closed (The original reason cars started putting this in them) and the heat built up under the hood disipates before heating up the hood. The V8 and V6 badges were also discontinued for 01 but some still have them. The other badges, the rams heads and the Quad Cab badge should be there.
Everyone is being so nitpicky about the hood insulation that no one has noticed that they also discontinued the covers that go over the storage bin and jack tray under the rear seat. This is a more useful item than the hood insulation IMHO.
http://www.geocities.com/rfroache2001/
Just for the hell of it, I left a note with the Service and Sales Mgr re: these, just to see their reply.
Actually, I like the cleaner look without the QC badge, not sure if I want to be stealthy with no V8 badge, though my wife says the colors of the badge would match nice with the flame red body color.
I did another pre-prep inspection this afternoon while the truck is still sitting in the dealer's lot, one paint bubble was really some sort of gel that wipped off, however, I found a 2nd fender flare with a even bigger chip than the other...will have the dealer touch it up, depending on how both fender flares look after touch up, may have them replace them....looking forward to picking up my new truck Tuesday and going over it with the check list
BTW, the factory bed liner was installed, I had heard they were on back order. (great price at $165)
Salesman calls dealer support line. "Items were discontinued in February". "I ordered in February", I responded. "Well maybe they were discontinued before you ordered". "Maybe they weren't", I said. Salesman:"We have the right to make changes, blah, blah blah" again.
Never offered to replace missing items or adjust price. Salesman tells Sales Mgr, I'm not happy.
Sales Mgr. tells him to give me my deposit back if I'm not happy. Long story short, got my deposit check on Saturday and am now driving another Ranger (4.0 V6, 4x4 4dr Off Road) for the next 3 years. Sorry folks.
You'll have to give me a ride someday so I can compare with mine. Bet the acceleration is great with the 3.92 axles, something I should have ordered on mine, especially with the bigger tires in the t&h package.
Lets hope there remains no clunks etc. Mine was very quiet at first,or at least I did not notice the light clunking sound when shifting.
Still have the developing rattle which seems to be coming from the passenger side rear door area. It is a single tap sound so I still cannot track it down properly.
Lets hope the bird dropping incident is a good omen. ha ha I'm still laughing.
Anyone have a fold-a-cover tonneau?
If so, how do you like it, any problems with leaks, etc.
Thank you,
Bob
If you look at the 01 Club cab you will see the notches and recesses are still in the trays for the covers.
And what do you "keeps griping about". I only mentioned the covers 1 time and it was to prove a point.
I know, this is a quad cab subject but the facts are the same. basically we are talking the same vehicle and the same comments appear on all of the boards whether quad, club or regular.
The point being is that the contraversy over the hood insulation is silly. The insulation is nothing.
On the well covers, I mentioned to the dealer they weren't there. They put in a missing parts request. The reply came back "Discontinued". No big deal. If I really want them,. order the ones from 97 and 98. People make a big deal over trivail matters.
Now the person who cancelled their order just because the hood insulation wasn't there, well that tells me you weren't really interested in a Dakota. That is reallyt being trivial. I expect that with your Ranger you will be visiting the Ford dealership quite often.
I agree that a dealer many times will put the insulation in simply because it doesn't cost much and if it keeps the customer happy then it pays for itself. It all depends on how you approach them. I know I could have had my dealer install it if I asked. But I decided to try the truck without it to see for myself. My decision is that the hood insulation does not add anything to the truck either in sound proofing, heat insulation of just the sound the hood makes when closing. I cannot tell the difference between my 97 with it and my 01 without it.
Thinking of going with one Flowmaster Delta Series 50 muffler with dual outs, and taking that to a local muffler shop to make me a true dual exhaust system while keeping the spare tire intact.
Due to the bending that will be needed on the driver side to match the pax side re: exiting the tail pipes, what will those driver side bends (mandrel) do to back pressure (more or less) and low end torque (more or less)...I believe some folks say they loose no low end torque with the 4.7 and dual pipes from the cat back, with a single muffler.
I'm trying to get both form (great looks of a dual rear exhaust) and function (most HP/Torque gains) and was wondering if this 'dual' system gives this over a single side exhaust, with both setups using 3 inch pipe.
Thanks!
(I do know of one good experience with the above)
Good luck with your Ranger, hopefully we'll see you back here someday!
(that didn't sound too good. I don't mean that I hope you're in the market for a new truck soon. ;-))

In other news...
I picked up my quad on November 30. I noticed a few weeks ago that I was missing the left side Quad Cab badge, I figured it fell off. With all the posts here about them missing and such, I dug up some pictures I took of the truck the first week I bought it, and guess what...no badge! I have one on the right, so I guess that they've either been falling off or been forgetting to put them on since November. When I call for my recall apointment I'm going to ask for a replacement under warranty. It SHOULD be covered.
Not much else to report on the truck, except that my gas mileage has gone up almost 2 mpg since the weather got warmer (PA). Now I'm getting around 15-16 per tank, rather than 13-14. 4700 miles on the truck.
On previous issues:
I don't know about whining in the drivetrain, but I noticed when I put the windows down and drive around, there is what sounds like a turbo whine reflected back to me when I drive by a brick wall or something similar. I really can't hear it in the cabin at all.
I also have a rumbling feeling in my gas pedal, it really starts to rumble at 2500+ rpm. My transmission clunks too, depending on how I let the clutch out, or push it in. On this truck you really have to push the clutch in all the way, no tap-shifting this rig, at least not yet.
Otherwise everthing is good. Still happy with the truck. Gonna be time for an oil change soon, fun fun fun.
By the way, where in WA are you? I'm in Everett. Keep your eyes out for a flame red, decal-free QC with (after next week) a matching red fiberglass bed cover.
I like it and everyone I show it to does. As far a leaks go, it does. Apparently It is supposed to. There is a gap between the front top of the bed and the cover and the same gap in the rear above the tailgate. I have read on here that some owners have put weather stripping in the gaps. I do not have a great problem with water getting in. I did have dust get in form the bottom of the tailgate when I drove on some dirt roads.
Most of what I put back there is something that I do not want in the front or it is in a box. If not, I put it in a big garbage bag. But I can go to Home Depot get a few things and still stop and eat without having to watch the truck or swap stuff from the bed to the cab.
The cover has a lock at the front and the rear. The one in the rear keeps the tailgate from openening when it is locked. There are also clips to keep the wind from lifting it. It folds so small that I have not had to remove it yet.
Good luck with your choice.
I really like the way this kind of cover opens up to carry larger items. Ideally would like a cap, but they seem very expensive. Could be that I'm just hyper-stingy. This kind of a cover seems to be a good compromise between a cap and one piece fiberglass tonneau. Weather resistance and security are my main goals to achieve.
Bob
I have no idea what make it is. It's simply the plastic tailgate piece that I believe is used as a set with the plastic bedliner. The tailgate protector alone was about $30 and only took 3 or 4 bolts to fasten. I got it at Wright's truck accessories in Springfield, PA, with the rubber bed mat that costs $65. I prefer this setup to an all plastic liner. When I get a decent rug fragment, I'll cut it to the same config as the bed mat for alittle more cushion. Rubber bed mat, plastic tailgate protector and a cut to fit carpet fragment is a cheap solution to protecting the bed, at least, I like it!
I saw a new color on the dakota yesterday. They are apparently replacing the Amber with something called Omaha Orange. Personally.....Yuuch, but there will always be someone who will love it.
Also the hood insulation has not been discontinued, it has been OMITTED as part of the SLT Plus Decor package, it is still available through the parts department for $69.95, I checked with them before I went down to inspect my QC when it came in. After reading on this board that is was being left off most new trucks I figured if nothing else I would buy it from the parts department and add it myself, $70 is cheap insurance that my factory finish on the hood will be protected from engine heat, a good coat of wax will protect it from the intense Colorado sun above.
I was lucky and my dealer took care of it at no charge, I didn't throw a fit, I simply explained that it was listed in the brochure as being include and I felt that I paid for it and would like to get it. I agree with you that refusing your vehicle for lack of it is a bit ridiculous, but getting the brush off and being lied to by your dealer on an item that would cost him $35 to add to your truck, after you just spent $26k is defiantly poor customer service.
Perhaps more valuable than the hood insulation is seeing how your dealer responds when you have complaint/problem, obviously all dealers are not equal. Cherry Creek Dodge in Denver has been excellent to me and I would recommend anyone in Colorado looking for a QC give them a call, Matt Green was my salesman.
For you the hood insulation was a non issue because you see no perceived benefit in having it, but how would you have felt if your new QC arrived with a space saver donut spare instead of the full size one with matching rim that is listed in the brochure? And how would you have felt if upon raising a complaint with your salesman/dealer you were told that they could change equipment packages at their discretion and if you didn't like it that was your problem not theirs.
The bottom line is if DC is going to change option/equipment packages in the middle of the model year the customer should find out about the changes from their salesman when they place their order, not from some Internet message board a week before they take delivery.
-----Alex-----
Now if your dealer did not give you the correct information when you asked, then that tells me the dealer is in the wrong. Also as I stated if you went to the Dodge website when you ordered you would have seen that the hood insulation was no longer listed in the SLT Decor Group description.
As to the hood insulation providing relief from the heat. The 4.7 is far enough away from the hood it doesn't heat up. As I stated I have both. Also being an enginbeer I have access to various tools including thermocouples. I can tell you for a fact. There is no difference in the hood temperature with or without the insulation. If fact in snow country I would not want the insulation as it will trap moisture and salt thereby cause premature corrosion of the hood. I used to live in snow country, saw way too many cases of body cancer.
Personally, there are some things I wish they would just drop, like the air bags for one. I'd rather put that grand or 2 into other things I would rather have. Oh well, that'll never happen.
The dealer took care of the issues I found during pre-prep inspection and all passed after post-prep inspection (one problem, see below) and test drive, and then I felt comfortable signing the papers.
Problem: No underhood light, is the Sport+ suppose to have this, did the factory forget, or is it another cost cutting move by DC? (I'll be following up with the dealer tomorrow morning)
All badges and console light are missing (has console power outlet)...no B&M to the dealer but I will get the v8 badges and two free oil changes and wash.
SWEET!!! What a ride compared to my 1998 Sahara and 1998 Voyager mini-van, in all areas!
Now ready to start ordering mods and tonneau cover with sport wing (bye-bye refund check!)
BTW, I should now be a registered member...
HAVE YOU HAD YOUR V8 TODAY!
I just filled up at the pump, got 17.9 MPG. Same driving that a month ago was getting me like 13-14.
I must admit this board is becoming pretty dull. Enough about the missing badges and insulation . . . for the love of commercialism
Too bad about the badges and stuff. I really like this truck, there are no others that come close to matching this combination of compact truck, V8 and proper four door seating. But Dodge (and the other American manufacturers) cut corners in the strangest places. For sure, I didn't pick the truck strictly because of the hood insulation ! I think the confrontational buyer/seller relationship promotes a weird psychology - the dealers don't really deal so the buyers feel they have to chisel everything possible.
Someone asked the question regarding factory roof racks - I haul a 12 foot cartop boat that weighs about 150 lbs - and the box is just too short to mount a box rack that properly supports the entire boat. I have a support bar that mounts on my hitch draw bar to hold to back end of the boat and had the factory option (dealer mounted) roof rack to hold the front.
The rails for the dealer mount rack are held with a combination of silicone sealant and 5/32 steel pop rivets. Their are several rubber wear strips installed between the rails to protect the roof.
The rails seem strong enough, although the metal tabs that the cross pieces hook into seem awfully light. When the load is on I don't notice any flexing in the roof panels. Noise is minimal.
I actually remove the cross pieces - they are too short - and mount two five foot long sections of light steel tubing in their place to accommodate the width of the boat.
The two rails have to hold around 50 lbs total, so far no problems. I didn't order the bed extended.
A question for the experts. I'm planning on mounting some stuff on the side walls supports of the box. What do you suggest to make sure that the bolt and screw holes don't rust out? Has anyone welded these materials?
