Only cause I'm picking up the 18K tranny (that I know the history of) and the whole rear assembly brakes, lateral links, LSD, pedals, etc for $700) Otherwise I'd wind up just turboing it and leaving the 4EAT. If I didn't think it would be a total PITA I would do the 5MT after the cage, but from what I've researched it's a big PITA to do it after the cage is in. If I want to become a race-car driver, I need to have a 5MT, 4EAT won't cut it in the race world :(

I will still be favoring ATs for beginners and will favor instructing them. I'm hitting up a clinic for instructors at VIR in Feb, after that you will see me at HPDEs instructing all the time :)

Anyone know of any defensive driving schools in NJ? My daughter is getting her license in a couple of months and I wanted her to get some experience with situations before they happen in the real world?

Secondly- has anyone seen an Outback wagon with tinted windows- I'm wondering how it would look- any pix?

...but I have seen some OBS with tints and it looks tight/hot/nice/awesome/off the hook - (take your pic).

I was thinking about putting tints on my wife's OBS, but because it's a lease, I didn't want to invest in something that doesn't have a financial 'turn-around'!

But I do suggest having it done. I'd go with limo tints in rear and 35% in front :D

Isn't a rear LSD actually worse than an open diff on a circular track? Doesn't the rear LSD cause the car to push (understeer)?

I doubt it'll make much difference on the rear axle.

open works great until you have the power to spin a wheel. then you need some form of limited-slip.

the rear LSD on Subarus won't be ever needed on tarmac unless you have uber power. way above stock power.

a front LSD though would be really handy. under max-effort cornering you can spin a front tire with only the naturally aspirated 2.5L. obviously any turbo motor can really spin it. for tarmac I'd favor a worm-gear type like a TorSen or Quafe.

Well paisan, I understand your logic. That's a great deal on known drivetrain components. It also provides the opportunity to upgrade motor and transmission mounts to something stiffer.

Do paint that puppy white and go for the vinyl stitches. Could turn it into a sponsorship gimmick like you-know-who!

Here is a picture of my 2001 GT wagon tinted, basically the same thing as the outback.

    Robert,

I have a 2000 OB that I finally had tinted in NJ by Lee from AZP - Mike(Paisan) recommends and works with him. He did a nice job - I did 30% all around, unfortunatley no pictures yet. You may want to do 30% up front/ 20% the rest.

...so I don't get the reference. I did, however, correctly predict that Michael Gambon would replace the late Richard Harris in the headmaster role (Dumbledore?) right after Harris' death. I saw Gambon in a Harold Pinter play in London three years ago and thought he'd be appropriate. Eventually every British actor and actress of note will appear in a Harry Potter movie.

My wife reads the books and has taken me to the two movies. The flying Ford Anglia gave me a nostalgic kick; when I was growing up a Chicken Delight near us used one as a delivery car, with a big fiberglass chicken mounted on its roof.

Give me a couple of years and I'll be up on it. ;-)

one of Kirsten's students gaver her the latest book for christmas. Since I'm laid up with a sinus infection, I started reading it today.
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
Pat: is that one single spec of dust I see on the left passenger window, 13mm down and 14mm from the left? LOL

mike - what does Lee charge for tint on a Legacy wagon? I still gotta get up there.

Also, how hard would it be to swap out shocks on a Miata? Just curious. I think mine are spent.

Yeah, put her on the Turnpike and tell her to watch out!! ;-)
Seriously, are you a member of AAA? They have regular classes.

    Also try http://www.drivingdynamics.com/html/prg_teen.php

No experience with Driving Dynamics. I found them with a search.

    Heard about this on TV:

    Dennis,
Put her on the turnpike and tell her to watch out- I almost fell out of my chair laughing!

Reminds me of what happened to my wife- she got incredibly lost coming back from somwhere and ended up in a bad part of newark in the middle of the night(in a minivan)- she ended up calling 911 to get help getting out of there!

I used to get them routinely until I had sinus surgery in November 1999. Opened up all the nooks and crannies and haven't had one since. Allergies are another story...>:-(

    Feel better soon, Loosh.

  • bigelmbigelm Member Posts: 995
What was your recovery time from surgery?

My nose bleeds during the winter and the doctor said surgery (but no guarantees) or move to a warmer climate. I'm seriously considering the latter part ;)
  • paisanpaisan Member Posts: 21,181
    OBs look great tinted IMHO.

    I'm gonna miss the 4EAT :(

Drivers ed? hmm, bring her to an auto-x and we'll tech her. Or come hang with us for a day and she'll learn quickly how to become a defensive driver! :)

Lee rocks, great guy, great tint, and heck there is Beer while you wait at the shop.

I think he charges like $150-160?

Miata shocks should be easy stuff, probablya s easy or easier than the subies.

Humidifier, guys. Get a good one. I have asthma and so does my son, so we're well equipped with a whole-house model plus 3 more in each room when we want even more.

I was a chronic sinusitis sufferer until our cat died. I knew I was allergic to her, but I married into the thing, so what can I do? NEways, she died in Nov. of last year and I was illness free until March (my usual post-St. Patrick's exhaustion immune collapse). And then healthy again all summer and most of the Fall. Things went to hell in late October, I've been sick 3 times now.

    um, duh. 5 speed.

I'll believe your reasons for automatics in and around NYC. No question there, manuals are nutty. But on the track... need you even ask? :-D

Is that for one thing that car will not be competative no matter what (if it runs with near-stock engine it's against RSs, if it's got a turbo, it's against 900hp Porsches) so it's not gonna be competative, might as well leave it at AT for Hypov to track, as well as other beginners on Team IAC.

    -mike
  • subearusubearu Member Posts: 3,613
MT for the track gets my vote, even if it gets forced induction. Franken L isn't the car for beginners, it's those 900hp Porsches worst nightmare! ;-)

For beginners, having a MT turbo isn't necessary. And you want to make things easy, so an AT setup would be preferable, right? Pick up another base Impreza for that.

Loosh: my wife gave up her cat, to her roommate. Guess I should thank her, eh?

    bit: tint looks schweet.

paisan: much as I am a 5 speed fan, I say carry the torch for Subie automatics! It's just hilarious that you beat out some much fancier cars that way.

Plus, I like the idea of it being a loaner car for newbies, and for those people they may be better off concentrating on things like the racing line, steering, and braking, not shifting.

Other benefits? It's less work. It's already competitive.

You can pick up a used WRX, maybe with some body damage or high miles, pretty cheap later on. Hey, is Jim's Legacy a 5 speed or automatic?

Lee charged $170 for my OB a couple of months ago. He does a great job.

    Juice,

My mind is shot(and it's not even New Years yet) - I can't remember the brand Lee uses. I know it has the lifetime warranty, as I mailed it in. I did 30% all around. Maybe Mike knows?

The AT/MT thing, leaning toward keeping it AT for now. May keep the MT for the SVX when the tranny goes on that.

    Jim's is a 5MT legacy :)

I think I need a snorkectomy also. For myself, I mean. My Forester has already had one. :o)

    Yum, turbo with MT.

We bought my daughter a 96 Impreza Outback- When you unlock the drivers side door all 4 doors unlock.

Any way to change this so only the drivers door unlocks with the rest remaining locked??

    Thanks robert
  • paisanpaisan Member Posts: 21,181
to the door locks on the other doors. That would be the easiest way to do it.

    -mike
  • ozman62ozman62 Member Posts: 229
... Try using just use the manual lock switch, not the power lock button.
    HTH, Owen
  • paisanpaisan Member Posts: 21,181
when you unlock the door with the key it unlocks all of them IIRC.

    -mike
  • rthompson10rthompson10 Member Posts: 75
Mike, if I do that I won't be able to unlock or lock all of them once I'm in the car??

    Robert
  • paisanpaisan Member Posts: 21,181
No way to split it apart I think. Not without a lot of effort.

  • hondafriekhondafriek Member Posts: 2,984
If you want to spend some money you could install an aftermarket system with that feature.
