My pre-ordered C320 with C2 package has arrived and the dealer has included the CD changer in the deal. The total Cap cost for a 4 year lease is $40,657.00 inclusive of taxes. Is this a reasonable price I should settle for? Or that I can get a better deal than this. Please help, anyone.

Week before last, I returned to the dealer with continuing brake squeal. I left it after successfully recreating the driving pattern that generated the squeal many times for the service advisor. By the time the tech got it, they were unable to duplicate. I ended up making another trip to drive around with the shop foreman (30 minutes of cruising side streets and parking lots), again unable to duplicate. After discussing the problem, I agreed to put some miles on it to see if maybe something in the noisy pads would "wear through." So far there has been a squeal or two, but few and far between. Definitely not enough to bother for a return visit unless it worsens again.

FYI: The shop foreman gave some detail about the "pad treatment" that was applied the first time I went in. He said that the pads are removed and soaked in a MB-approved solvent with the intent of clearing dust build-up or stray metallic particles that might not ride against the rotor smoothly. Prior to reassembly, the shims and brake hardware get a fresh film of MB's version of the usual graphite-looking grease. After having the service advisor suggest I was "forcing" the squeal (puleeeze!), it was refreshing to have an intelligent discussion with the shop foreman that answered my concerns - i.e. what kind of snake oil is a "brake pad treatment"?!?

For now my wife continues to put on mostly quiet mileage. We have a road trip to S.Fla next weekend and definitely looking forward to getting the new car out on the highway. As far as I know, nothing further has been done after the initial "treatment" other than test drives. One might think it was a new car thing, but this one was a demonstrator with 2100 mi on it. Who knows?

I guess, this is the contact information you were looking for. Why don't you organize the tour yourself? MB and Porsche are both near Stuttgart, the BMW museum is (obviously) in Munich, and Audi has just now opened their brand new historical expo in Ingolstadt, which is 45 minutes north of MUC and two (rather fast) hours east of STR.

Here is info concerning visiting Porsche, Mercedes-Benz, AUDI and BMW in Germany.

Now, this site seems to offer EXACTLY what you're craving for... ...and I don't blame you a bit :->

Here is info from a guy who went racing in Germany, this is the Nürburgring home page (crank up those speakers!), and their pricing. For some reason, the pricing and schedule pages are not available in English, so just drop me a line and I will translate for you (I am trying to make up for the "Babelfish" joke the other night...).

Boredy,I am leasing a Black C320 w/th C2,C3 pkgs. for four years for $40,735 incl. taxes. Also, the dealer is paying the registration fees. The following items were "thrown in",meaning for free. CD changer, car cover and all season weather mats.

I think you can do better. Either a better price, or, have the dealer throw in some more items. Such as, accessories you may want. Good luck.

I have found that vehicle specific boards with content have been extremely helpful. In addition to the company leased C-320 we (my family)have a Toyota Landcruiser, a VW Cabrio and a Volvo Station Wagon. I have saved thousands of dollars reading the Volvo and Land Cruiser boards. They have tips and solutions that in the Volvo's case have saved me literally thousands of dollars. A Volvo dealer gave me an estimate to fix the A/C for 1200 dollars which included replacing the climate control unit. The board had a fix which explained exactly how to remove a circuit board with a known defective solder connection that could be fixed with a soldering iron. The same Volvo would stick in 3 gear and the automatic transmission wouldn't shift to 4th. Volvo wanted $300 bucks to inspect the transmission and then provide me with an estimate for the repair. The board had a post that pointed you to a 60 dollar relay that was a known culprit. I bought the relay inserted it per the instructions in the message and "fixed" the transmission, which was actually fine. I replaced a radiator for $150 bucks using a posting that indicated where third-party radiators were available when the dealer gave me a 500+ parts and labor estimate.

Anyway, as these cars get older (out of warranty) many will want such a resource. While I'll probably not have the C-320 out-of-warranty, some of you that have purchased the cars personally may, so I recommend posting impressions, solutions, tips etc., on the board I mentioned before: http://pub50.ezboard.com/bmercedes2001onclassowners. The period is not part of the address by the way.

How large an area does each navigation CD cover? I live in NYC and wonder if I will need more than one CD to cover the area between Washington DC and Boston?

I don't know that much about cars, so I need some help. I have the opportunity to buy a 94 e32o coupe MBZ. From my neighbor. I've searched the net, and the average price on Kelly Blue book and Edmunds is between 25k - 30k. This one has 43k miles and looks like mint. Asking $18,500.

Is this a good car? Seems like a great price.

I am considering purchase of the mb ext. warranty - 8 yrs/100k miles total coverage. The dealer quoted $2550 for this. Opinions or experiences as to whether this is a worthwhile purchase would be much appreciated. My vehicle is a 2000 C230K with sunroof, power passgr seat, full leather.
I expect to hit the 8 year mark before 100k miles. Thanks.

I assume that you're in the US. In Canada, the extended warranty is only available for up to 7 total years' coverage, and 160,000 km (99,400 miles).

For the 2000 MY C-Class, the cost is:
    - $1675 CDN ($1140 US) for adding 3 years' warranty to the standard 4, (+160,000 km).

So the price you're being quoted is a little steep by Canadian standards, although you do get one more year and 600 miles out of the deal.

I don't envy your decision because of the cost, but in my case, I think I'll get the extended warranty on my C-Class when I buy one in a year or so. I want to make sure the car is still under warranty as long as I owe money to the bank for it ;->
  • limanliman Member Posts: 32
Thanks for the response, 404c. In the US, there are two extended warranties available - powertrain only, and 'premium coverage', which includes powertrain and other systems. The powertrain coverage is $1100 for four addtl years/100k total miles, compared to the $2550 for the premium coverage.

The 'premium coverage' is not a bumper to bumper warranty. There is a list of covered items. Coin toss, I guess, as $2550 would hopefully cover a couple of repairs. These should be durable cars.
  • drew_drew_ Member Posts: 3,382
Just so you know, in Canada, we can actually buy the extended warranty within the 4 year bumper to bumper warranty coverage (if under 2 years, your vehicle will not require an inspection; if anything is amiss in the inspection, they'll have to fix it under warranty anyway!) In the US, the extended warranty must be bought within the first year of ownership.

So, you can save the money you were going to spend on the warranty and invest in something for the next 3+ years :-) I know I will!

That is an interesting point, Drew. If you put US $2550 away for three years at 6%, it becomes $3000. Seems like a lot to pay for this 'insurance'. MB must make a lot of money from this extended warranty program.

I am considering purchasing a Mercedes "brand" CD changer from lafayetteradio.com. The guy I spoke to there said it was the same 6-disc unit (made by Wexler?) that the authorized Mercedes dealers install, and it's about 30% cheaper. I looked in my trunk and in other Kompressor models to see how it's installed. I can see where the bracket goes, but haven't a clue where the wires and fiber optic cable hook up. There doesn't seem to be an outlet in the trunk anywhere near the well by the right fender, just the battery next door. Can anybody help me?
  • mbnut1mbnut1 Member Posts: 403
Snap it up! If your don't want it let me know I'd buy it. I would get and extended warrenty from a reputable company that inline 6 has had a histor of head problems which could get real costly if it has to come out of your pocket.
  • 404c404c Member Posts: 146
Liman, the Canadian extended warranty is not quite a bumper-to bumper warranty either, although it very nearly is. For example, oil seals are not covered beyond 120,000 km (75,000 miles). In most other respects it's probably the equal of or superior to the US Permium extended warranty.

So considering that, it seems to be quite good value compared to the US one.

You are right - I think these cars should be very robust over the long haul. That's why I want to buy one and keep it at least 15 years (my present car is 13 years old). Perhaps the electrical system could be a problem area, as it is rather complex. For me, I want the security of not having an unexpected bill (however unlikely) while I'm in the throes of finally paying my car off in the 5th (or 6th??) year.

As Drew notes, I'd probably buy the extended coverage in the 4th year of ownership - why buy it right away (unless the price goes up while you're waiting...a gamble, I guess).
  • boiadeboiade Member Posts: 15
Extended warranties from the manufacturer will increase the resale value of your car even if you never use it. I made the mistake of not buying one for a 97 BMW and probably lost the price of the warranty in the trade-in value.

don't they still taper the warranty to fit your anticipated mileage? I use my '99 c280 sport for work and put a lot of miles on it. Therefore I got a 5 year/100K for only $864. True it only extends the man. warranty by a year but it gives me a lot (50K) of extra miles. I think the 6 year/100k was 1160 or something. I found on my 525 I hit expensive repairs around the 80k mark (covered!) and then the 120K mark (not covered:(- ).

Yesterday, I took ownership of at C320 (Bright silver/Ash Leather) with the following options:
C2, C3, C4, K2a, Command system, driver multi-contour seat drivers seat, xenon lamps and full leather.

    In no particular order:
    1. Xenon lamps - great. Impressive nite vision. nothing like it. Definitely worth the money.
    2. C4: Heated seats etc - living in CA, my wife didn't think this was a smart buy...until she had them on in the evening when the outside temp was in the 40's...now she is a convert. She smiled and said they were great.
    3. C2; glad I ordered it. very nice.
    3. C3; the car came with it but definitely not needed in my book.
    4. Command: very cool, but confusing. Large display. Definitely a keeper but don't have it totally figured out yet. Thank God I have a 16 year old son to figure out how it works.
    5. Multi-contour seat: Fabulous! my only regret is that there is not one on the passenger side. great personalize support.
    6. K2a: CD changer is in the glove box! Easy to reach. Jury is still out on the phone...have not figured out the voice control features but the phonebook entry appear in the menu on the dashboard. Easy to place and receive calls via controls on the Steering wheel. Not sure its worth $2000 but I like gadgets!
    7. Navagation is very cool...and accurate.

Driving impressions: no beak squeal yet! Responsiveness is wonderful. There is no lag when the gas is pressed...it looks like Benz fixed this problem. Stops on a dime but definitely BMW and Audi have better 'manual shift thru the gears' technology. Don't be fooled by the extra seatbelt in the rear...this is a 4 passenger car. We had 2 teenagers and an adult in the rear and it was TIGHT.

    Issues:
    1. Trunk takes a couple of times to close...needs to be tweeked by dealer.
    2. The radio/CD volume faids out for no apparent reason... this is supposed to be so when you are talking, the radio quiets itself, but don't know how to deactivate this feature. Does anyone have any hints on this?

After a few thousand miles, I'll update this thread.

I was considering a 2000 C230 K. with sport package. (5K miles $30K). I'm in the NE and wondering if any problems driving in snow / foul weather? one review online read "this is not all-weather car" Any comments appreciated.

Also, any thoughts if this being the "old" body style would affect resale value? I'm lifting this qoute from edmunds:
"But you've really gotta want a Benz to buy the aging C-Class. It's not a bargain, and there are less expensive ways to obtain a small luxury-brand sedan. A BMW 323i is a better deal, for example,"

    Thanks.

Seems like you've got about evry possible option, if you don't mind me asking, what you have pay for all that? Not item by item, just the total? We've had our C240 for 3 months now and love it more everyday! Haven't had a problem, other than a minor trunk issue, and not a peep out of the brakes, knock on wood!! Enjoy the car!!
  • dennettdennett Member Posts: 332
I do like the older C, especially that incredible C43, BUT if you're going to spend 30k why not buy a Base C240 6spd? It'd cost right at 30 and be far from a stripper, there's no such thing as stripper Benz. I think the resale value of a 01 6spd will be much higher than a older C, especially 3-5 years from now when the 01 is still the current model and 00 looks like a 95. If you really want to keep it as cheap as possible get a white base 6spd. I've seen a couple of white Cs and they really are beautiful, and you don't pay $625 for the metallic paint. Let us know what you decide to do, as I said I do like the old modeland there'd be nothing wrong with the car you're looking at, especially if it's got other options beyond the sports pac. Is it full leather? Cd changer? Xenons? If it's well optioned then 30k might be a steal! Good luck!

I am glad I don't have the navigation system for the following reasons:
It is CD based which means you have to have the CD player filled with the Navi data base disk, and it's another $800 more fo the changer, to get cd music and navi at the same time. Update disks for other areas to the Merc are $200 bucks plus and you need several to cover the US! For me this option is not ready for prime time.
Accura uses a DVD disk which has the whole USA on it, along with a much sharper detailed display.

To accomodate the screen, The dual heating controls revert to the cheaper 240 type of control without the digital read out.

Garmin offers a portable road pilot GPS, with color for $600 which can go from car to car.

Had noted that my drivers seat also slowly moves over bumps, front to rear as was noted by another contributor. A bit of an uncommanded pivot. This will be the second try to fix this.

The 320 is really a good runner though I thinking of upgrading the wheels/ tires for a liitle more stick.

The option I would love to have gotten would be the multi-contour seat. I miss the lumbar support that every Audi has as standard.

    Keep the info coming, thanks!

    lperakis or anyone with Command.....

is robtroxel right when he indicated that there is no climate control digital display on the 320 with command (reverts to 240 controls)??

in the picture it appears that the digital display is the same as 320s w/o command...

    ssuleman,

The command system works the CD, NAV, Phone, Radio but the climate control is NOT displayed in the command system LCD screen. Below the screen are two digial readout controls.

I hope this answers your question.

P.S. Finally figured out voice control...very very cool. Great with the phone but works the CD, Radio and Nav as well.

A very experienced MB dealership mechanic advised me to treat the new C's pads and rotors with "BG" brake treatment. It comes in a white tube and is available at autoparts stores. The second best treatment would be a product made by "Granitize."

Perhaps, the post #753 about the "pad treatment" is this same BG product. If so, it is working so far as thomas_1 said on Jan. 26.

My Capri Blue 240/ash leather with C1,2,4, auto and multi-contour seats is to be made in decade 3 of February. I am looking for the answer so my pads can be treated at delivery.

If any of you try these treatments, please let us know. I trust this mechanic. Cheers.

    My Dealer quoted 70 % Residual on 36 month lease;
    68 % residual on 42 month lease and 15 K mi/year.
    9.072 % divide by 2400 = 0.00378 money factor.
Hoping Fed cuts by another 0.50 pts. tomorrow.

I just spoke with my salesman who told me that my C240 has arrived in the country and is at the prep center now. So it's possible it could be at the dealership in the next couple of days. He also said to me that if the car is delivered to them before the end of the month that I'll need to be able to come in and get it right away in order to clear it out of their inventory before month's end. Given that it's the 29th already it seems unlikely that they will have it by Wednesday. I must say that his remarks about my needing to take the car off their hands right away struck me as odd. The last I had heard from him back in the beginning of January, the car would be delivered to me around mid-February. So, now this notion that I have two days to sell my current car and get all of my ducks in a row in order to save them the problem of having my car on their lot at the beginning of the new month seems like quite a rush. It was rather off-putting. What are they going to do if I don't pick the car up before the end of the month? Sell it to some one else? What's in it for me other than having my car as fast as possible?

Come over to the E-class discussion board.
But yes, that sounds like a good price. Is this your first MB? Maintanence will be higher than for many other cars. We had some discussions on the earlier Es over the last week or so in the E-class forum

on My new C320, I have noticed that occassionally the radio or CD volume will fade out completely if the MB phone is installed. The phone IS NOT in use when this fade out occurs. Any idea as to what is going on here? I have traced this thread on this board but don't know the resolution.

Hello everyone. I've been considering purchasing a new c240. I drove one the other day and really love it. I've read some horror stories about taking delivery on this post. Typically how long have most of you waited for your cars? Also, what does the dealer expect for compensation at the time of the order? I drove an automatic and noted a definite lag of power when depressing the accelerator. I'm definitely interested in the manual 6 speed what at your thoughts on that? I'm comparing it with the 3 series BMW all wheel drive. I like the MB because it seems far more refined and luxorious, does this sound right? thanks
  • mongo11mongo11 Member Posts: 14
The C 2001 print brochure booklet shows a picture of the command/Navi option with the C240 type of heating controls in the back few pages. Maybe its just on the 240; Still the pic should tell you that. Also you give up the tape player on the command system.

Heard a couple of things of interest at my dealer yesterday, but don't really know if they are FACTS.
First, I was told that all MB dealerships will officially switch to Mobil 1 Synthetic oil for all cars on Feb. 14. They said they have until then to use up all the petrol based stuff. They, San Diego MB have already gotten a big shipment of Mobil 1 55 gallon drums. My saleman told me not bring in our car until all the old stuff was gone.
Also I was told that the new C class cars coming in have been coming with a much "cheaper" LATCH babyseat brackets that don't fold away out of site. The new ones are permenently sticking out and are in the way of adults sitting in the back seat. They're very upset about it because they can't remove them because there are liabilty issues if they're removed and then later reinstalled incorrectly. We're still loving our C!! I'm trying now to figure a way to get a new CLK. That's why we went to the dealer yesterday.

Its a 2000 black on black, 5,500 miles, sports package, moon roof, cd changer and leather seats (not heated), $30,550. Dealer told me new this was around 37K new.

I found a couple of 2001 C240 around 35k. one is loaded (but odd color), the other red with 6 speed.

I was about to buy a 98 528i when i bumped into these. I was trying to keep cost under 30.

    what ya think?
  • lperakislperakis Member Posts: 49
Finally figured it out...very cool stuff. Recognizes anyones voice for the phone, radio and CD player. Will turn on the Navi. system. Makes using a cell phone safe, believe it or not...just say "dial number' or 'dial name', it will then prompt for number or name, the just say the number or name and the word DIAL and the call is placed. For a radio stations you just say "frequency 101.3' and off it goes. You never have to take your eyes off of the road.
  • lperakislperakis Member Posts: 49
Spoke with the MB dealer shop foreman and he said that when get this annoying dropping off of volume when the radio or CD is playing even if the phone is NOT in use, it is due to the fact that you have a voicemail message waiting. If you clear the voicemail message, then the fading goes away.

He said it drove them crazy trying to figure this out. He and I agreed that a something more obvious should have been done.

Have a read of this article: (I've ordered the 6MT)

    http://www.canadiandriver.com/testdrives/01c-class.htm

"...the manual transmission breathes more performance and excitement into the base 2.6 litre V6 engine which redlines at 6000 rpm. The manual transmission will appeal to sporty-minded drivers - oh, and it knocks $1,500 dollars off the price of the automatic-equipped C240.
The 5-speed automatic transmission with Touch Shift, is as smooth as warm molasses, but the kickdown times in automatic mode were a bit slow when passing. Perhaps its adaptive shift control would adapt to my driving style over time, but I only had one day with the car..."

Approx. 3.5 months delivery time here in N.J. to get a specific car with the options you want.
  • patscarpatscar Member Posts: 7
thanks for the heads up on the article. Congratulations on your order. How long do you expect to wait? If you don't mind me asking what packages did you order and how much? Also, did you haggle for the free cd player or any other discounts. I've read that several people have been able to get the cd player thrown in. I ordered a loaded Xterra last winter and couldn't get any discounts. I'm not very good at haggling, plus I was purchasing a vehicle that couldn't be kept on the lot.

I ordered Nov. 8th. Car was built by 01/19/2001.
Was told it is at the Port in Hamburg last week, waiting for ship. It is a 7 day (to 10 days) crossing to Baltimore. Then approx. 10 calendar days in Auto Port / Customs / Pre-Delivery Inspection etc...
C1, C2, C3, C4 + Bose upgrade. $35580 MSRP, Desert Silver metallic paint, -ve on the Leather upgrade. Have not sat down for final lease numbers and CD player price yet.
Will Greenspan cut Rate by 0.50 tomorrow ? That is the question...
